STEVEW  The video format/software/conversion world is a mess so I understand why the developer is dropping out but having just now (7/7/09) found iSquint I must say I'm sorry to see them go.

I had a video that nothing else (Flip4Mac, Handbrake, VLC etc) could handle but just for kicks I gave iSquint a try and - poof - instant perfect MP4 video. No settings - just drag and drop. Excellent!

Download this while you can!

Thanks for all your hard work and best wishes.

STANLEY MARCHAL  This is a great converter for non-power users. The result are good but not outstanding.

But in general I like this very much.

That said, it crashed on one of my avi video. It starts converting but somewhere at 50% of the complete file - 20mb - it freezes and doesn't to anything anymore. Other converters do not have this problem with the same file. All other videos I converter do work.

Easy to use. Easy settings. Good end results.

PROMAX  I have one question? Where are the options you need to increase quality of the videos?

It's also clear this has been programmed by a Windows user. He needs to take a look at the OSX programmers guide asap.

But in the end it works to convert to iPod movies etc... but lacks many important features found within other comparable converters.

MORGANLAYNE  This program is so quick, easy, and reliable. I'm a new Mac user and was concerned about all of my avi files, but iSquint converted them quickly into a file compatible with my Mac. It converted a 9 minute video in less than 1 minute; literally. Great program.

RANDE_IS  Finally, something that works!! I wasted an entire day downloading junk converter programs that promised the world. Since downloading iSquint I've deleted them all. I have high hopes for using this program in conjunction with TubeSock for capturing educational U Tubes. After TubeSock captures the files as FLV, iSquint comes along and converts it to Mpeg4. I simply drag and drop the file into my PowerPoint and voila, I've got dynamic video on my PowerPoint slides.

Way to go! Now what's this crap I am hearing about iSquint out-of-business. Get up, brush yourself off, hire a business manager to take care of day-to-day and get back to your talent for programming. We need you out here!!

5 Stars!!

POIKKEUS  There are many MP4 converters out there, some costing $30-40 - and most not worth the investment. iSquint is an exception - easy to use, clean interface, works fast. This is especially useful reducing the size of media for the iPod Touch, and you have a choice of video and audio quality to choose from. And it's free, the best price. (I had purchased my copy long ago.)

iSquint's one flaw may lie with its handling of MP4 files. Typically, a one-hour avi file can be compressed in a little over twenty minutes. However, compressing an equivalent MP4 file may take over a day. To be fair, it may be hard to find a converter anywhere to do the job quickly.

One feature I would have liked is the ability to halt and restart jobs, but that's only critical when MP4s are involved.

ALBABE  The nice folks over at iSquint have a Temporary Fix to the videos that were transcoded last year before the newest QuickTime decided not to play them!

Just change the suffix from .mp4 to to .3gp and they play fine.

I have no idea of the ramifications of this, but at least these vids will play in QuickTime again!

EZRABBIT  For the most part, this app works great for converting flv (youtube) files into ipod compatible files. There is one issue, however.

It seems that if an flv file doesn't quite match the ipod's screen dimensions, iSquint makes up the difference with what appears to be rows of estimated pixels at the bottom of the display. It's like adding a poor quality water reflection at the bottom of the video.

Surely it should default to a letterbox format if the dimensions are slightly off, rather than sticking rows of unwanted fuzziness at the bottom of the screen?

The advanced options confuse me a bit, so does anyone know if it's possible to get iSquint to do this?

However, I began having problems with other things on my system (e.g., dmg files not showing up on 'devices' menu when opened, and inability to wake from sleep). So, I did an Archive and Reinstall of Leopard.

ZANGIEF  In search of a good MP4 converter, I went straight to MacUpdate and downloaded both QTAmateur and iSquint to see which one was the best.

Neither of them are perfect, but one did come out on top. Here are the tests I did:

I used a video downloaded from YouTube and converted to .m4v by TubeTV for testing each converter.

First, I tried iSquint. Using all defaults except for video size, I converted the file. The video's size remained unchanged, because I didn't want it made smaller.

When I opened iSquint, I was greeted not by a nice welcome screen, but by a sheet urging me desperately to buy VisualHub instead, before I'd even tried iSquint! A row of arrows pointing to the 'Try VisualHub' button encouraged me. To quote the app, "No thanks, I'll suffer with iSquint". OK, so now that that's over, I changed my settings for the movie size to the current size. I had to open QuickTime in order to find the size of the movie first. The conversion was fast and clean.

At the end of the conversion, I received a message informing me that the conversion was finished. The OK button wasn't the only one in the window; another one encouraging me to use VisualHub was there. I already said no once, isn't that enough?!

So now, in regard to the actual conversionÂ…

The quality was excellent! The file size was the same as that returned by QTAmateur, though the video returned by QTAmateur looked somewhat like JPEG compression was used, which isn't what I wanted to see.

Overall, iSquint is the winner, though the advertisements are a bit obnoxiousÂ… two points off for that.

GOFFAM  Dude... I don't wish to be rude and by no means am I trying to insult you, but what are you - 12 years old? Have you just recently acquired a computer and/or the internet?

Because seriously... I've never seen anyone get their panties into such a bunch because of a developer trying to get a person using their FREE software to purchase their full, commercial version. Haven't you ever used a shareware application or the "Lite/Light" version of a commercial application (such as this)? This isn't anything new yet you proceeded to complain about it... multiple times.

Heaven forbid that a developer who's spent a lot of time and effort on their application, AND who was gracious enough to provide a free version of their software which provides more than enough to satisfy the needs of 90% of those looking for such a program, tries to encourage the users of said FREE program to purchase the full version.

This is a great little program... it's easy to use, it converts quickly (It converts an hour long, 700MB .avi file in about 12 minutes on a 2.0GHz Core2 Duo), and does so all while being, once again - FREE.

You honestly have the nerve to say "two points off" because you have to click one extra button? Give me a break...

Frankly, anyone with an attitude like that shouldn't even be allowed to use such applications... especially ones as well made as iSquint.

Either way... To the developer - Thank You for such a great little program! There are some of us out here who admire the hard work you've put into this application and who truly appreciate your generosity with providing a much needed application free of charge.

JOEYHEGELE  Hey, I just downloaded iSquint 1.5. I think I was previously using 1.4 something or other. I loved the program except that it could not convert videos from Myspace because they were Flashplayer 8. Supposedly 1.5 is able to convert Flashplayer 8. While it has no trouble with the video the sound is awful. It is incredibly out of sync with the video and the sound is echo-y and windy. Does anyone have similar problems? Will this issue be fixed any time soon? I love iSquint, I just wish it converted Myspace videos. Thanks for any help anyone can give me.

It's not just awesome as far as the technical aspects go, but come on, you have to admit that the dev was original! Sticking the lyrics to "Help" by The Beatles in the HELP menu was just brilliant, and those extremely useful tooltips that just "say it all". In my opinion this is what many apps should have: a good sense of originality and humor. Thumbs up, dev!

JROSSOL  First, let me say this is one of the best / free / simple / useful apps on macupdate. Secondly, it is understandable that such a highly-popular app would encourage frequent bug-fixes from the developer. Nevertheless, in the interests of the end user, I suggest the developer post 'final releases' on macupdate (for those of us who care more about dependability) and perhaps post 'beta / incrimental' updates only on his(or her) own website (for those of us who want to try the latest, greatest, thing). Sound reasonable?

I for one don't like the fact that I've had to download and re-install this thing like 6 times now (not that it's hard or anything). Keep up the excellent work!

TECHSPANSION  Actually, there were 4 test releases of 1.3 on the iSquint website and message board. 1.3test4 was deemed final.

All tests were done with MPEG-4 video, or with small H.264 videos just to test the basic functionality...none of the testers (including me) ever actually encoded a long H.264 video with the 1.3 series...

Personally, I use MPEG-4 encoding optimized for TV. Apple's H.264 support on the iPod has been disappointing.

SJJ_PUBLIC  To followup to my own question... I just couldn't resist trying, and so upgraded my iPod's firmware to 1.1 again. Sure enough, videos converted with iSquint 1.2.3 do indeed play perfectly, at least so far. Yeah! Further, with the latest version of Handbrake, DVDs converted with that program, so far at least, don't seem to have problems either. Double yeah! Furthermore, iPod video firmware 1.1 is much better for playback of videos (presuming converted as noted) as the controls are much more responsive than with 1.0. Triple yeah! So it looks like it's finally safe to go into the 1.1 firmware waters, as long as you don't have a large library of existing videos converted with older versions of either software, that you can't or don't want to reconvert.

AQTINC  iSquint has never worked for me, at any revision. I have litterally hundreds of movies, TV shows, and miscellaneous clips.

I tried converting .mov -- no success; I tried converting mpg -- no success; I tried converting mp4 -- no success; wmv, avi....the list goes on and on.

Even when it looked like it converted, when I tried to copy the result to my iPod, it was rejected for being in the wrong format!!

There are too many other free alternatives that work great, and are just as fast. This is a waste of time.

SJJ_PUBLIC  That's weird. I have never had iSquint produce an unplayable video. There were some problems at one point with it stopping the conversion prematurely, but that was fixed. The only current issue I've found with it is that when I try to convert a 720x480 slideshow exported by iPhoto ('05) (I'm not clear on why iPhoto '05 exports at that size, but it does, and does so by cropping the photos, not by stretching/squashing them - i.e. it is *not* a non-square-pixel format) the resulting video is stretched. I believe iSquint is presuming that a 720x480 video has non-square pixels, and in this case that's incorrect. I was able to work around this problem by manually setting the vertical and horizontal size to be 1.5:1 (720x480 is 1.5:1). For example: 540x360. In the end, though, I was much happier when I exported my slideshow to iDVD, instead of as a 720x480 quicktime file, created the DVD image and then used iSquint to convert the resulting VOB file to iPod format. This worked great and didn't result in cropped photos. I.e. I blame iPhoto's weird behavior, not so much iSquint, although iSquint may be presuming that anything that's 720x480 has non-square pixels and it shouldn't.

SJJ_PUBLIC  I hope it's true that iSquint has figured out what the problem is with the 1.1 firmware and has a workaround that actually works. I'm not going to try it though (that is, I'm not about to install the 1.1 firmware again), until this fix is in other software as well, especially Handbrake. I hope the developer of iSquint is actively sharing this fix with other projects. We need it! Also, if anyone has tried it and has found it to work, especially with higher resolution conversions, please post about it here!

RUSSELL GLEASON  As a user of iSquint I've been very pleased with this product up until the developer jumped from 1.1.X to 1.2.X. For some reason, the 1.2.x versions of this software no longer performs correctly on my Mac (a G4 533MHz Digital Audio running OS-10.4.5 TIGER). I've since then returned to the older version of 1.1.2 of iSquint and that version works perfectly. If I were a software developer I could be more specific and technical as to why the newer 1.2.x versions won't work on my Mac, but since I'm not, I can't.

SJJ_PUBLIC  This is the best, albeit only since the audio bitrate (advanced) setting was added. With default settings I end up with pretty horrible audio quality. With the audio bit rate set to 128 kbps or higher, the quality is good. Why is the default so bad (and what is it?) Also it's annoying that every time you click the Advanced button it brings up a bother box. Not to mention that you have to quit and relaunch to undo any Advanced changes you make.

In a related comment, either preferences are needed, or it needs to remember settings between runs so we can get our choice of settings without having to reselect them every time.

In spite of these issues, though, iSquint is quite fast, with the right tweaks produces great results consistently, and it handles pretty much anything you toss at it aside from DVDs (use Handbrake and sometimes MacTheRipper for those.) I don't really care for the (alleged) humor in the program, but I can live with it. Guess I'm a lamer. ;) Anyway, great stuff and thanks for it.

CPRUITT  Hmmm... thats rough Pedro. Honestly I never understoon why other countries use commas though. Do you not use anything to separate large number blocks like thousands & millions? For example its proper in the US to use commas & decimals in numbers like so:

If Europe uses commas in place of the decimal it seems like it'd be far more difficult to read.

SALVADOR  Do you noticed that in the last month many iPod video converters emerged? well I tried them all and this is by far the best video conversion app for the iPod, even better than the non-free ones, it's simple, fast, it can convert avis, movs, mpgs 4:3, 16:9 aspect ratios and the results are always great. it need some polishing (for a beta that's great), particularly the convert folder feature but it works, I've converted 36 40-minute-shows with the latter and everything showed up correctly and it's free!. Thanks to the developer for iSquint.

MARK  Outstanding! Does exactly what it should and it's free! The only thing I would ask is that the programmer consider adding in a chioce between mpeg-4 and h264. Many Thanks!

ICEDTRIP  I love this program. I run 10.4.3 on a G4 533DP and it flies where other programs (Quicktime Pro and Podner) take forever. I have only used it for converting DivX to ipod video, but plan on trying it out on many differnt video formats.

ffmpeg rocks and was the best choice for this program to use. Can't wait for v. 1.0.

ANONYMOUS  A great program, a lot better then paying $30 for Quicktime Pro. The only problem I've had is getting folders to covert on 10.3.9. I highly recommand this as opposed to ffmpeg which has troubles converting ipod compatable videos.

MACAHOLIC  Yes, I can't get .WMV files working either. Quicktime can't open them, and neither can this.

P.S. Can anyone confirm DivX support?

ANDREW BOWSER  Works great for me at home. I've had no problems and its been pretty fast too.

I tried it at work on 10.3.9 with the latest version (0.7), and I get that 'no such directory' error though...

TYLER LOCH  How come nobody found this out until today?

0.7 didn't like being put into a folder with a space in its name.

Download 0.7 again to get an updated version that takes that into account.

SWORD SAINT  I was excited to see 10.3.9 support, since I've been using the "Export front movie to iTunes" AppleScript to convert the QuickTime versions of Star Wars: Clone Wars (downloaded from starwars.com) into an iPod-ready format. The AppleScript works great (though slowly), but iSquint throws errors about being unable to read the files. Are there any secondary program or system requirements?

JOSH  Works fast and painless - especially for batch conversions! Also seems to work well with .WMV files. Much quicker than spending the time to export from Quicktime.

The dialogs could use a little work like the previous poster said, however the main window for selecting a file / folder and conversion options are clearly laid out and easy to understand. It does what it says and does it well. Exceptional value. Please keep up the good work with it!

DAVID CROW  This is a great program with plenty of potential, but right now there are some basic issues that need to be worked out. One thing that could be improved is the file destination, and name, and some of the text boxes (popups) could use some work.

Besides those things, this program seems great, and as always, thanks for making it free. Hopefully it will stay that way.

TYLER LOCH  Are you using Panther?

That's a bug I've seen show up in 3 Panther setups so far.

That's why iSquint requires 10.4 for now. Hopefully I can work around that and offer iSquint for 10.3.9 users too.

...if you're using Tiger, well, then this is a problem...

ANONYMOUS  Ya I'm using Panther so thats the problem...it would be great if you could make a Panther version because there are no other programs out there that let you convert WMV to quicktime that I know of (besides PSPWare which is all glitchy and only imports 1/2 your movie)....Thanks for the info

ANONYMOUS  The author of this software seems decidedly ambiguous about what format the video is converted to. MPEG-4 is my bet, considering the file size and conversion time. Meanwhile, Apple is pushing the BETTER standard, H.264. This software seems to be a general step in the wrong direction.

TYLER LOCH  The ReadMe explains what format is used and why.

H.264 IS the better standard in theory...but the iPod's support of it is very limited. MPEG-4 allows for larger image size on the iPod, which is important for TV playback. Not to mention MPEG-4 compression is much much faster.

H.264 support is planned for future versions of iSquint.

MAGNUS  Aweswome little snippet!

I unfortunately do not have a video iPod to test it with, but what did work for me was to successfully convert my AVI music videos to iTunes compatible formats.

With DivX I could open the MPGs and save them as .movs, and thus add them to the iTunes library (iT does not tolerate MPG or AVI).

Two of these musicvideos were in AVI format (or MPG), which 2 different converters, including QuickTime, failed to open.

iSquint took them with ease.

Optimized for TV Screen and Go Nuts left no visual or audial difference that I can tell.
