KIYOOKA Thanks Gary. Our product is primarily for converting QuickTime content, and there are plenty of test cases where ffmpegX does not deliver good results. Since all the OpenSource tools use the same basic plumbing, they all have the same bugs. Also, there is no question that the Apple AAC encoder is vastly superior to the open source one. After all, it is an iPod, right? But at the same time, for ripping DVDs etc. ffmpegX is clearly a better choice. Or Handbrake. (Version 1.0.4)

SJJ_PUBLIC This works well if you select H.264 format, albeit excruciatingly slowly, but I find that it does a terrible job if I use MPEG4 format, even at the high quality option. I get a bad pulsing effect in the resulting videos. Anyone else seeing this? I wish the MPEG4 format worked well (and it can, as shown by iSquint - unfortunately I find that iSquint gives horrendous audio quality, so it's useless.) At least I can use H.264 format with this and get good video and audio quality, but it does take an insanely long period of time to convert even a 30 minute video using H.264. (Version 0.993)

KIYOOKA Please file a bug report with Apple regarding the pulsing for the MPEG-4 exporter: This is the exporter we are calling that generates the pulsing. Movie For Podcast does not seem to have this problem, although it also encodes MPEG-4 SP video.

MACUPDATE ADMIN From the developer: "A popular question for technical support is 'my movie has no sound - help!'. If your source movie file is an MPEG-1 file (.mpg file extension), first create a QuickTime movie using MPEG Streamclip (free), and then convert with MoviesForMyPod. Or, try using Podner ($10). If your source movie file is a DivX AVI file, try running the file through DiVX Doctor before processing with MoviesForMyPod. If your file is not one of these formats, please contact technical support." (Version 0.993)

CUCILLO CONSAD This is an Amazing little program. I haven't tried the streaming option yet, but I've made a few batch conversions and not one problem. If the automatic widescreen conversion is gone, I will miss it. Hopefully, loosing it was just an oversight. I'm waiting for muxed file suport, .mpeg, .vob, and with a cherry on top, .ts support would really be nice. I could then take shows right from my DVR and convert them over night in 2 steps for my ipod. Even without it, this app is a steal. You ca't beat free. (Version 0.992)

GEN KIYOOKA RE: Widescreen to Letterbox This function comes for free with the H.264 Encoder Preset which calls on to "Movie to iPod Video" - an Apple provided component. So unfortunately, you don't get automagic letterboxing right now with MPEG-4. You should be able to use MPEG-4 Custom to set a width/height that keeps your aspect ratio correct for 1.85:1 or 2.21:1 feature films. (Version 0.992)
| Nov 1 2005 |
ANONYMOUS Extremely easy and amazing fast compared to the old MovieToGo application ... takes about an hour to convert a 45 minute video clip. Currently the best free iPod video converter for mac! One feature I really miss from the old MovieToGo that appears to have vanished is that of the ability for the app to automatically convert widescreen hdtv movie clips to the proper ipod resolution. By default this version ruins the video by stretching it to fit the 320x240 aspect ratio, rather than preserving the aspect ratio. As far as I can see, you have to manually configure it as a custom mpeg with a resolution of 320x180 to prevent it from distorting your video. Other than that, it is a great tool! (Version 0.991)

ANONYMOUS Customer settings aren't saving here. I keep trying to make H.264 videos with a bitrate of 350kbps, but the output is MPEG-4 at 768 (default when opening the custom settings dialouge). ANONYMOUS MoviesForMyiPod is easier to use than QuickTime Player Pro since it is single purpose, but also it's more easily powerful for this singular purpose because it gives you simple quality options, including the option for MPEG4. QuickTime Player Pro doesn't put that option out in front when it comes to converting videos for the iPod and while you can do it with QP Pro, you have to know what settings to select. With Movies For My iPod it's a simple and quick pop-up menu selection. Also the watched folder option is great for automating the conversion of downloaded videos. MFMiP also offers a queue, however I found it either confusing, or impossible to remove items from the queue or re-arrange them, and the queue is represented textually. The queue needs work. Also the program doesn't support drag and drop - you can't drag a video onto its icon in the dock to open it. A feature I'd like to see added is the ability to add custom settings as menu items in the pop-up menu. Also, I'd like the option of having it automatically add the converted videos to iTunes. If that is added, it would be even nicer if it automatically placed the converted videos properly into the iTunes hierarchy of folders so that iTunes didn't need to copy it and you don't end up with two copies of every converted video. Alternatively just offer the option to move the video to the trash after it is added to iTunes. When it comes to putting video on your iPod, this program offers more features than QuickTime Player Pro, is easier to use and is free. What's not to like? (Version 0.99)

GEN KIYOOKA Thanks for the feedback. Many of your requests are things I am also discovering as I use this program myself to convert many of my own videos. Each time I add more features I am confronted with the challenge of keeping the UI as simple and clean as the first version, which had basically no options but was improbably easy to use. Your feedback will make its way into the product - count on it.
