S_ENGEL  I had problems installing Zinio Reader and downloading a subscribed mag on 2 machines. I sent a request to Zinio two times but they didn't answer. So I contacted the publisher but even their request to Zinio stayed unanswered. Very bad support, very bad behaviour, very annoying. :-(

PATPATNG  It misses full single page viewing option which exists on the UB testing version. Very inconvenience. I will fall back to test version.

SHOCK J  Strange...while it does say version 3.0.17013 on the Zinio Web site, I have had version 3.0.17024 installed for over a month now. Naturally, I'm assuming build 17024 comes after build 17013. The date on the "current" 17013 installer is 3/25/09 so it's not "fresh" off the shelf. Very strange indeed.

SHOCK J  Strangeness again... Another "dated" version of the Zinio Reader is published and it's still not the latest version (at least not according to the version I have installed). The 3.0.17019 installer package is dated March 31, 2009. I still have 3.0.17024 installed. You gotta wonder if this is intentional or is some slacking on their job.

BLUEATRIA  I installed the new UB test version the reader and delivery manager and it works great. I am running 10.5.2 on a MacBook Pro. It is a bit faster than the old ppc version (which I had no problem with). I get several US magazines this way as the prices for things like Mac World in Australia are just extorionate ($AUD 12-15!!) and the Zinio reader is not a bad way to read magazines. The delivery is automatic and very simple. I hope they don't go to a browser based reader like their example iphone reader as that is pathetic. I like the reader and if they could make a native application for the iphone/touch I would be very happy. I have been quite a long time Zinio user (about 3 years). I highly recommend Zinio.

THE_JUDGE_G4  Zinio seems to have updated their app to v2.3 and compiled it as a UB:

THE_JUDGE_G4  I like the idea of being able to read my magazines in a digital form on my MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, because of the lack of development for this app there are couple of problems:

1. CPU intensive when running the download manager. Uses 100% of CPU when downloading a digital mag. Also, for those on Intel machines, this app has not been compiled as a UB.

2. This is not Leopard compatible. Will not open any old or new mags. As most of the reviewers have stated, obtaining support is futile.

At this point, this software is useless to me.

ISUB  Had emailed Zinio a few times too as the reader has never run very well on Intel compared to PPC. They replied and said they aren't working on updating Zinio Reader but they are working to make the magazines so they open in your web browser or something like that. Basically they are hoping to cover more systems that way.

CRAIGZ  Ouch. Got my blackbook. Registered the sweet 'lil thing at the mothership, got the standard rag offer. Feeling compulsive, clicked that button, found the 4-6 month delay in first issue to be undesirable, ahh. online reader version, happy to jump in that lake.

DRM strikes again.

Last update October 2006. Yikes. Anyone want to send this developer holliday sales approximations?

UB please?

NEDRON  Reading electronic versions of magazines is often similar to reading web-based newspapers. Often, the web layout of a newspaper attempts to emulate that of the printed version. This often results in three-columnb articles on the web that require scrolling up and down and left to right.

And that brings us to the Zinio experience. I originally looked at Zinio when I sent a giant mound of magazines to the recycler. I reasoned that electronic versions might be better, simply from a resource standpoint.

When subscribing to a magazine via Zinio, there are no discounts that I've seen over simply purchasing the physical item. The primary benefit is waste reduction, similar to why one would by a hybrid car.

The magazines are presented exactly as they are in the printed version, which can lead to some frustration when articles trail across columns and ads, etc. However, page navigation in Zinio Reader makes this relatively easy and the zoom features are very useful.

The Zinio Delivery Manager has come some way in terms of stability since the 1.x days. Back then, it regularly crashed. The ZDM that ships with the current Reader is very stable.

In short, Zinio Reader is a reasonable platform for electronic subscriptions to magazines that you would otherwise purchase or physically subscribe to. The electronic versions have the benefits of zero physical clutter and storability.

I give this a 4 only because the fit and finish of the Reader is sometimes less than stellar, particularly when Zinio forgets something as simple as updating the splash screen for a new release.

JAZZADDICT  I'll second the previous reviewer. Nice GUI, nice rendering, missing essential features, unstable. There are actually two seperate applications in this download ; one is the reader, and one the delivery manager which should be included into the program. Once my MacWorld subscibtion expires I'll stick to MacWorld.com

JIMW  This is one of the most unstable commercially released products I have ever used. Additionally it has several quite undesirable features. For one thing it installs itself into your "startup items" in login, without notifying you about it so it launches its downloader and connects to the Internet, without warning, whenever you reboot your machine. While I give it credit for having a fairly decent human interface, this makes little difference as to the desirability of the product when it constantly generates error messages, runs you in circles, when you try to recover lost periodicals, and its help support is next to useless. I have or had a electronic subscription to MacWorld but in struggling with its next to useless error messages and lack of decent on-line support material, I lost all of my magazines I had downloaded and can't get them back again without at least trying to email their technical support. Incidentally when I brought this fact to MacWorld's attention and the MacWorld Expo last week, they were simply not interested nor did they care if they lost me as a subscriber.

So while the product is nicely implemented and laid out, it is simply to buggy to be a useful product. So I am abandoning it and any subscriptions that use it. In my opinion it is one product to stay away from, at least until they really get it fixed and working reliably, along with some decent on-line help.
