SGMOYE This is basically a good piece of software, but Linotype's support is very much less than good, indeed it is not anywhere near acceptable. Having paid for version 2.x I expected decent, timely support. Snow Leopard has now been out for several weeks, and Linotype has not fixed FEXPro incompatibilities with SL. The worst problem is that fonts activated by FEXPro do not show up in application font menus **until** you go to FEXPRO, deactivate the font and then reactivate the font. As soon as you shut down your computer, that 'fix' goes away. The FEXPro web site makes absolutely no mention of the incompatibilities, much less suggestions for workarounds (I don't think there are any). There was some suggestion that a fix would be available during the week of September 14 -- that has come and gone with no word from Linotype. I have received email from Linotype technical support acknowledging the problems, but nothing else. (Version 2.0.2)

OSMOSIS Those in the UK considering purchasing FontExplorer X Pro, be aware you'll be charged more. You can only buy it from the Linotype website in Sterling, for £59, excl. VAT. At today's exchange rate (1.633), that's $96. And after VAT, $110. So why are people in the UK being charged more? After e-mailing Linotype, I was told they would not discuss pricing policy but to wait/look for a 30% discount promotion. If a 30% discount is applied (with VAT added), to bring it down to $77, that's still only $2 less than what we, in the UK, should have been paying in the first place. Rip-off Britain is alive and well. (Version 2.0.2)

CORPSECORPS Apologies for not exploring the software in more depth before posting my original review and including this there, but it gets worse! FontExplorer Pro does a lousy job of recognizing duplicates or aiding the user in doing so. After importing various folders of fonts, multiple versions of the same font in different folders, from different foundries, different vendors, or in different formats may exist in the library and not be recognized as duplicates. The following can all coexist in the FEXP database without sending up any red flags: /Library/Fonts/Ariel Narrow.ttf /FEX_Folder/A/Ariel Narrow Family/ArialNar /FEX_Folder/A/Ariel Narrow MT/ArielNarMT /FEX_Folder/A/Ariel Narrow/Ariel Narrow.ttf /FEX_Folder/A/Ariel Narrow 2/Ariel Narrow.ttf /FEX_Folder/F/FF Ariel Narrow/ArielNar I began from scratch and it seems these can all come to exist while prefs are set to skip importing duplicates, and no good way is provided for handling such situations, requiring the user to carefully screen for possibilities before importing, or browsing & searching the FEXP library and deleting by hand. Without very careful comparison, one may never notice whether any one is better quality, has more or less glyphs, or has other differing properties. Though one is OpenType (TrueType flavor) and the other PostScript Type 1, FEXP doesn't separate the following, showing all 8 (4 variations of each) under just the one family name "Ariel Narrow". /Library/Fonts/Ariel Narrow.ttf /FEX_Folder/A/Ariel Narrow Family/ArialNar Seems like pretty poor form for Linotype. CORPSECORPS Got some other problems with this. When importing, it doesn't make any distinction between versions of the exact font if there's the slightest difference in the name. Via the above, and other problems, when importing i tend to wind up with a lot of font conflicts of sorts it won't handle, missing files, etc. Also, i get a lot of crashes when trying to import large numbers of fonts. Even though it's set to skip duplicates and the like, if it hits one bad font, instead of reporting an error IT CRASHES! (Version 2.0.2)

CORPSECORPS FontExplorer Pro seems like easily the best font handling/viewing application i've seen. I used the free non-pro version for quite a long time. I'm finding that unfortunately it does have 2 serious problems. Try to move a font from a system set under the wrong circumstance; it crashes. Try to add a font to a system set that already contains it; it crashes. Sometimes i've no idea why. It's just not very robust at all on my Mac Pro under 10.5.7. I still haven't ever seen a font handling app that has a really good way of sorting fonts with similar properties. Perhaps it needs to be worked into the font technology. (Version 2.0.2)

XENOPHILE The free version is still available here. I knew something this great wouldn't be free forever. FontExplorer is an awesome solution for those with enormous font collections, who've already dropped big money on fonts and wont mind paying for something to manage them. Those complaining about the price probably haven't bought enough fonts to actually need something so powerful as FontExplorer. (Version 2.0.1)

GARY30 I agree completely. i used to have a huge and expensive font collection to manage but don't do that kind of work any more. I like auto-activation but FontExplorer X had become a hit or miss proposition on that front and from posts here and there it looks like there are problems with CS4 and the FontExplorer X Pro version. Meanwhile, Apple's own Font Book has quietly matured into a very useable product for "the rest of us." You get to keep the font files where you want them, to group them for convenience and auto-activation is quite good. (Version 2.0.2)
| May 8 2009 |
BLUESTAR I switched from Suitcase. Got too annoyed. Great all around and seems much better than Suitcase. BUT! I don't get auto-activation.... It only works if I have the application open. Then you also have a background application running separately. What's the point of that if the auto-activation doesn't work? You also have a CS4 Photoshop plug-in AND a background app running YET when I open Photoshop file and it asks for a font it doesn't activate! So what's the point of it all? If this is the way it works just have the requirement to have the main application open for auto-activation to work OR fix the situation and have it REALLY work with the background app and the plug-in (just like it works in Suitcase.) Also, it still opens on its own occasionally when I simply open a file in Photoshop for no apparent reason, so this has NOT been 100% fixed. cheers (Version 2.0.1)

KINGADROCK Nobody likes to pay for software, especially software that was once free. Put this in perspective though, FontExplorer X is the best overall font management software on the market, do you really blame them for charging? I don't; I just bought my license today. (Version 2.0.1)

SPECTRAL7 Overall 2-3 years of free software for essentially a great product is good going. I still have old version installed on at least 50 machines and works fine IMHO in QXP7/CS2/CS3 environments. Pro software & support costs money.....you only need FEXPro if you have spent loads of money on Quark 8 or CS4 so a small extra cost for proper font management on top is not a big deal. It also opens up the possibility for centralised font management at a large cost but that is the way it is ! Please stop moaning about it, at least their is some competition in the market which should lead to proper development. (Version 2.0.1)

HOBOJOE Man, people really need to stop overreacting. One of the commenters below is basically comparing the Linotype people to drug dealers! "They give ya the first taste for free, but once yer hooked, it's gonna cost ya!" It's obvious Linotype's business model didn't work. FontExplorer was supposed to be like iTunes, where you use its organizational and browsing features, but also its "Font Store" feature as well. Well, we all know that fonts are probably just as pirated as music tracks are, so the income Linotype was hoping for didn't happen. So should they throw away this perfectly good app and stop developing it? Or should they try to leverage it into a new business model? You can buy FontExplorer Pro for $39 now until the end of February. That's a very reasonable price, much cheaper than the other options out there. I am in no way affiliated with Linotype. In fact, I'll even say that Fontcase looks really good too, and holds lots of promise for a 1.0 app. And it's only $45. But let's take the drama down a notch, okay? Save your indignation for something that really deserves it. (Version 2.0)

STUFFTECH Well, it was bound to happen. Free software isn't the easiest thing to maintain. It's cheap for now, but will eventually cost pretty much what all of the other font managers on the market. I think that I'll just stick to what I've got right now. No need to switch to this new pay-to-play version. (Version 2.0)

FARDILHA I cannot agree with Linotype way of doing business. First they try to get us hocked making it free for a while. Eventually they simply start charging for it knowing that most of us simply don't feel comfortable changing apps. (The initial "change inertia" is a strong force that should always be considered) I'm a long time FEX user (since the first beta) but frankly I hate that sort of tricks so much that I refuse to buy the new version. I'd rather pay to another company that at least was honest enough to tell you upfront what to expect of them. I will refrain of rating the app since It's Linotype politics that disappointed me, not the merit of FEX itself. Pedro Fardilha (Version 2.0)

KOBALT Okay, I installed it, tried it out and I find it much the same as the free version (in my workflow). Not sure what I'd be paying for in this new version. Can't be the updated Adobe plugins - they have always come for free with the app. Customisable list view? Kerning pairs in info window? Configurable toolbar? Connects to the all new FontExplorer X Server? Font store can be hidden by user or server admin? Backup functionality? Integrated PDF manual? Quick Install functionality? Is that really worth Euro40 (US$54)? Just contemplating forking over my cash - it's been a good app for me since it arrived and still the least expensive of the three big ones. And it *does* help me earn money. Oh, what the hell ... I'll leave it for a bit longer and use v1.2.3 which still works just fine. (Version 2.0)

RICHCASTILLO Very disappointed! I gave up using the previous version because of constant freezes & crashes. This version gives me nothing but grief, as well. I spent about 3 hours with v2 this afternoon. In that amount of time the program crashed at least 50 times when deleting duplicate fonts. It froze almost as many times for no apparent reason. Perhaps my library of 7000 fonts is too much for this app but for a graphic designer I don't think that is unreasonable. FEX is virtually unusable for me. Shame, because I like the interface. WHAT THE? I am too a Linotype FontExplorer lover. I have owned, used and tried Suitcase 8 to X, Adobe ATM Deluxe, Font Agent Pro, FontExplorer, Master Juggler. For me FEX is the simplest and easiest to use without locking up the Mac or applications, or crashing. It can be a bit slow on viewing typefaces... I can live with that rather than the crashes I had with Suitcase or the others. I have not tried/demo'd/installed Fusion as once bitten a little shy. I purchased a few licences today for FEX, jumped in, and enjoying it. (Version 2.0)

SAJDAK70 When I saw the price for FontExplorer I started to be dissatisfied with that move to version you have to pay. Maybe I was going to be angry
But I read some comments and I'm going to be calm. I should give a time for testing this upgrade and after that I'll say conclusion if it's worth all the money they want to pay to Linotype. 30 day is enough for testing, I think. FontExplorer is very good app and I hope that move of developer won't damage royalty of its users. (Version 2.0)

MACSTERDAM Im a FontAgent Pro user, but Ive always had a serious interest in FEX because of its appealing user interface. Having tried the various versions up to and including 1.2.3 and now this 2.0 paid upgrade, Im sorry to say I find its still no match for FAP. After having deinstalled FAP, cleaned font caches and such, I still find that with a lot of fonts installed, FEX is much slower than FAP and has problems with a number of fonts which both FAP and FontDocter think are ok. The interface of this 2.0 release is once again very nice and it makes FEX a pleasure to work with. Unfortunately the same cant be said for the way it handles fonts, which is a darn shame. So, for the money, Im better off with FAP. I guess FEX is just not me. It will be interesting to see how well FontCase develops (the latest beta is already quite nice (with a stunningly beautiful interface I must ad)) and how it will compare to FEX and FAP. So three stars it is (when comparing to FAP). FEX got some nice features, it's easy to use, but lacks in the other areas. Nevertheless, compliments to Linotype for it's ongoing development of FEX (Version 2.0)

HMURCHISON Actually this is a pretty solid update. The UI is now up-to-date and while it looks a lot like the free version at first glance once you dig a little deeper you see that it offers much more functionality than the free version with plugins for most of the Pro level graphics application and a whole slew of customizability. The sever version also signifies that this is a serious application (if the "Pro" hadn't already tipped someone off) If your needs are very basic then of course you can stick with the free version or Font.app that comes with OS X. If your needs go beyond the typical user this app looks like it will be competitive with Suitcase and Font Agent Pro. I'd love to see a battle royal with the the aforementioned apps and the new Fontcase app coming to see which app remains standing. It's good to see OS X with so many solid font management apps. DEJAMOUR Great app for fonts. I just love it... except for one small thing. I have a set I call my Base Set that has the fonts I use on a daily basis. Many times but not always (and this is the part that is annoying), only some of the fonts in this set get activated on startup. It's never consistent which fonts are activated. I can't tell this until I am part way into a graphic assignment I am working on and it asks to activate certain fonts that I know are in that set. Anyone else having this problem? MACDOCMIKE Actually this is the BEST app out there for diagnosing font issues I've found since Font Reserve in OS9. The fact that it's free is just icing on the cake. Make sure to turn on Conflicts in the view menu and believe it or not... one font CAN crash your entire system. (regardless of what font-management app you use) This is the most quickly updated font-manager, with plug-ins for all major apps, and I have yet to have a conflict of any kind because of it (since the first 2 days of 10.5's release). Make sure to clean the application font caches and the system font folders (2 of the many handy things it does) once you've added your fonts, restart, and you should be almost there. Next step, activate all of your 'A' fonts and check the conflicts section for duplicate activated fonts. Delete the dup's and you should be all set (after repeating through 'Z'.). I've managed hundred's of clients with more than 10,000 faces each and this is the ONLY app that handles them all consistently and reliably.

MUDFLAPPER Actually, fonts are notorious for crashing EVERYTHING. I used to have so many problems with corrupt fonts causing every app that used them to crash. Font Explorer is the most reliable, trouble-free font app for the Mac. Trust me. It's not the app causing the problems. Make sure you have deleted all other font app plugins. Use something like Font Doctor to diagnose and fix/remove corrupt fonts. Clean the all font caches using Font Explorer. Restart. If it was a font causing the problem, the problem will be gone. If it's still there, there is something wrong with your system. (Version 1.2.3)

MYSHKIN2 Actually Suitcase is much better as it tells you whether a font is corrupt and offers to fix it and doesn't just lock up and crash your system. (Version 1.2.3)

MUDFLAPPER FontExplorer does that too, but sometimes, if the font in question is a system font, or a font used by Microsoft Office apps (for example) stuff starts crashing before a font manager gets a chance to warn you. It's a real pain in the ass. I had so many issues with Quark and bad fonts a couple years ago at work. And, of course, it only seemed to happen when there was a nearly-impossible-to-meet deadline. Ugh, bad times. (Version 1.2.3)

ZANGIEF Love it, just love it. One of my gripes with Leopard's Font Book is that when you delete a font before removing it from a collection, its entry stays in the collection if you view it from the font panel and the only way I've found to fix this is removing and re-creating the collection, a major inconvenience. Those of us who collect and use large numbers of fonts (me and some other posters) will find that Font Book just won't cut it. That's when it's time to bring in Linotype, who knows how to do fonts and how people want to do fonts. (Version 1.2.3)

BOSSKEV Yes, I got the same thing, but it wasn't a real crash at all. After clicking "yes, continue" or whatever the prompt was, because you are apparently making substantial changes to your setup, FontExplorer X brings up a system dialog box askng for your password to continue. Unfortunately, it brings up the system dialog box HIDDEN BEHIND the FontExplorer X window so it LOOKS like a crash has occurred. Just move or minimize the FEX window and see if there is a dialog box lurking there waiting for you to enter your password, and I'm betting things will be OK. That's what I found, anyway. A minor bug that looks like a major bug; still needs to be addressed. (Version 1.2.2)

I generally DO NOT recommend using font manager to manage system fonts as it can cause wonky problems. (Version 1.2.2)

DANA SUTTON There's not much to complain about in this app., especially since its free. My only reason for downchecking it: for some reason (possibly having to do with an inability to handle Unicode and its various ranges of non-Roman glyphs), FontExplorer is unable to display previews of a number of non-Roman fonts and symbol collections. In every other respect, it is superior to Apple's Font Book. (Version 1.2)

D9 Yep, I agree w/ others in that this is a great font mgt solution. That it's free is just icing on the cake. In a lot of ways, it reminds me of the old Adobe Type Manager. As I understand it, Linotype offers this free as a window to purchasing new fonts from them. It's a lot like iTunes, as others have mentioned. At it's core, it handles fonts (MP3s) but offers the ability to purchase new ones (iTunes Store).

MACERICG Only one thing really missing from this program that was offered in Font Reserve and that is the auto categorization of fonts, a la Script, Serif, San Serif, Dingbat, Blackletter, and so on. While under the iTunes-like Store feature of Font Explorer, you can view fonts categories for purchase, as seen on their website here: http://image.linotype.com/cms/built_img_d20674i9.gif However, your existing font purchases simply sit in alphabetical folders that the user defines. Since Linotype already sells a gazillion fonts from all the major foundries, it would seem this would be an easy feature to implement. I'm crossing my fingers that it wont take too long. ORION MK. V You need to play with the auto-activation features in the Preferences. TWELVEIGHTYONE When I started doing Graphic Design we used ATM Deluxe and it was excellent. Then OS X revolutionised our Macs, but sadly no one seemed to make a decent font manager. Font Book might as well not be there, Suitcase is a resource hog (and not very user friendly) and Font Agent crashed more times than Windows XP on a broadband connection with no firewall! Then came Linotype FontExplorer X, and I was completely blown away! The interface, the speed, the useability all make this app THE BEST font manager I have ever used (even better than ATM) If you are serious about managing your fonts, then get this app. I still can't believe it's freeware! Support is incredible, I emailed a question to them and got a personal response almost immediately - puts other compaines who charge for support to shame. Well done Linotype. (Version 1.1)

FROMAGE-HEAD Oh well I've never crashed with FontAgent even with 5000 fonts managed. ATM was not so good for browsing fonts, but I guess that's just due to interfaces evolution. Anyway I'm now using FontExplorer and I'm happy of it! The UI is far better than FA. (Version 1.1.1)

MACBETH What a great font manager: more elegant, more reliable and much easier to use than Suitcase and FontAgent. Save the money you would pay for these programs and buy some nice Linotype fonts instead. The similarities between FontExplorer and iTunes are striking: FE uses the same interface metaphor, it's arguably the best program in its class, it's free but it has an iTunes-like integrated store to generate some revenue. I hope this works as well for Linotype as it did for Apple. It might actually bring the idea of buying fonts to the masses. PS: I'm sure that the poster below who still prefers FontAgent makes valid points based on his professional experiende, but I can't agree with him. I had many problems with earlier versions of FA, and while I haven't used any of their latest releases, the simple fact that Linotype's font manager was usable right from the first public beta and has no discernable flaws in 1.0.1 has completely won me over and makes me very confident in the future of this program. Add the fact that $0 is quite a bit less than $100, and it becomes even harder to justify the purchase of one of its two competitors. (Version 1.1)

MARK_CAIRNS Up to now we've only really had Font Agent Pro 3 and Suitcase to play with. Always hated the latter; the former was slow but stable although continuing to improve. And then Linotype came along with this to completely smoke the other two out of the room in one fell swoop. Simply cannot believe how good this is for version 1.0 software, and now with the many many dozens of fixes and improvements in 1.1 they've got my loyalty down pat. Quark 7 was the holy grail and they've sorted that. Keep up the great work Linotype! (Version 1.1)

GODOFODD This software is simply incredible. Having been a long-time user of the Suitcase line of font management utilities, I have had to deal with every headache imaginable when it comes to dealing with fonts. In the past two weeks, I have put Font Explorer X through hell with customer-supplied fonts, trouble fonts, and PC fonts and Font Explorer X has held its ground. With drag-and-drop capability, adding fonts couldn't be easier. Add to that auto-activation plugins for today's leading software and we're talking real efficiency. I also quite like the drag-and-drop feature to export fonts; this makes for a quick and easy collection when transfering files to an outsource supplier. If you often find yourself purchasing commercial fonts, the integrated Shop connects you to the Linotype website fluidly and allows for one-click downloads of their great font line. The support documentation could be a little more detailed and you will need to be relatively familiar with the concept behind font management utilities to make an easy transition but I'm sure even the least experienced user would be able to make it work 9 times out of 10. To think I wasted money on Suitcase Fusion. My recommendation is to put your wallet away. (Version 1.0.1)

STEBA Using FontExplorer now for some weeks, and I'm really happy with it. Autoactivation maybe doens't work 100% all the time, but for accepting this you get a fast and intuitive font managing solution. The before mentioned problem with activating only compelte families is mildered by the speed of activation. Even if you activate some hundred fonts, it will only take some seconds. Say 1,2,3 and you're done. I really can recommend FontExplorer. Especially to those who use Suitcase. You will be blown away by the speed of FontExplorer. (Version 1.0.1)

MACSTERDAM Gave this another try because I like the interface and speed of it. However, auto-activation still not as good as FontAgent Pro. For instance, when launching an iWork document, FAP automatically loads all fonts but LFE does not. Also, when importing, I find FAP checks fonts much better for errrors than LFE does. I cc:'ed Linotype, and within 24 hours received a reply that they'd fix the next build -- and they did! Such a timely response would have been impressive anyway, but is nearly unheard-of for a FREE product. But now ... after using TrimTheFat 0.6 to strip 6+MB of unused Intel code from FE X 1.01 on my G4 Powerbook ... guess what happens! MACSTERDAM I have an insane amount of fonts. When importing in FontAgent, it checks the font at bit level to filter out faulty ones. HOBY I'm impressed that this software is all of the following: 4. Distributed by large type foundry Before trying a pre-1.0 of FontExplorer I'd been having new and unusual font problems with current application and system versions disliking random older fonts. FontBook wasn't helpful enough in diagnosing anything, so I'd tried an older version of Suitcase. That helped a bit but ended up being a not so great band-aid as I'd hoped. I had my sights set on Font Agent, and then Fusion.. one weekend I REALLY needed to get something done and my fonts were wreaking havoc on that project. I was this close to ordering Fusion when I read several posts on this site saying it was full of problems.. and I also happened to find FontExplorer with a post saying they'd dropped Fusion for this. I thought, "Really.. this new free program is better than Extensis's best combined efforts?". So I downloaded and installed it - half out of desperation, half out of not wanting to plunge further into debt. Once I got it configured and threw the fonts in, I was able to get on with the project and I've been happy with the setup since.. Font Explorer saved the day, it's simply a better piece of software in every way. Sorry to say, but I think Extensis will lose a lot of business. (Version 1.0)

TWELVEIGHTYONE I really like this app. We have 4 G5's in work and they all had Suitcase, and they all had daily problems with fonts - duplicates, auto-activation not working, wouldn't restart due to Suitcase crashing etc etc. so much so I dumped it and activated all my fonts in FontBook and left it like that... until I discovered Font Explorer. Fast, easy to use, intuitive and STABLE even in Beta this app is definitly recommended for anyone who wants to manage their fonts without tearing their hair out. After 4 days testing on my G5 we decided to dump Suitcase from the remaining G5's and installed Font Explorer on them all. HEAVY_SHOWER I really wanted to keep using FX, but for some reason, after trying previous beta versions, FX kept duplicating certain fonts and putting them in separate font files. So I might get an italic with a bold and a bold italic style, but if I also wanted to activate the regular style, it wouldn't let me because the regular also has the bold italic! Either I activate the bold (along with the italic and bold italic), or activate the regular (without the bold)! I haven't read anyone else complaining about this. Why me? D9 I agree w/ earlier posts in that this is at the least, a very good alternative for font management. I'm like another poster in that I've dropped Suitcase X1 for FontExplorer. Where its auto activation may be lacking, it has no problems handling my limited requirements of Illustrator CS. From the main window to the Smart Sets to the preferences, this feels like a Mac OS X program. It's quite stable and feature-rich including various preference settings for activation and checking as well as tools for management and repair. My only problem right now is that for some reason, I cannot preview non-Roman, symbol and dingbat fonts; I get blocks w/ a question mark in them. I've rebuilt the cache and optimized the database, but to no good. Still, for the price and the features, this is an excellent upgrade to Apple's Font Book and a worthy alternative to the Suitcase and FontAgent solutions. (Version 1.0)

M PREWITT Really like this application. ATM Deluxe was king, and I was sad that Adobe dumped it and never had a version for OS X (and IMO, even the OS 9 version was not as good as the Windows version). Linotype has taken up the cause, and released a free and excellent font manager. I especially appreciate the way it integrates with OS X's native font sets. I've always wondered why other OS X font managers cannot stick with this perfectly useful convention. I'm glad to see that Linotype is playing nice and working with Apple's methods. The store feature looks promising, but it still has a ways to go before it reaches the usability of the iTunes store, which seems to be its source of inspiration. (Version 1.0)

LARS HEDEMANN Preview wise, hedas above the rest. You can even set the tracking of the font you're previewing. Impressive! Smart sets is great, the gui is great. Activation wise, not at all as good as Fontagent Pro. It is as though fontexplorer X tries to be more than Fontagent in that department, but fails. trouble activating 2 fonts with same name, different types, slow in auto activating, bacause the app itself needs to be open first. Notification is fine, but I don't really need the app to ask me if it's ok to auto-activate fonts, i already set the preferences that way! Fontagent Pro wins on speed, daemon auto-activation, and it's ability to know the difference between a Helvetica Neue truetype and Helvetica Neue type 1. Sorry, I really wanted to use it because of it's killer interface, smart sets, and ease of use, but the small quirks and the half-finished auto-activation makes it impossible. waiting for FC5... JORY I'm impressed. And I'm not easily impressed by software. After years of putting up with the incredibly inferior font managers on the market, Linotype has done the seemingly impossible: they have released a font manager that WORKS! To my work methods, the holy grail of font management is something as simple as the old Adobe Type Manager Deluxe, but within OS X. My experience with font managers under OS X is that they are incredibly slow, difficult to use, and use far too much CPU. For example, the new Suitcase Fusion requires a minimum of a 1 GHz G4 processor. Why does a font manager require such hefty requirements? I'm happy to say that Font Explorer does not triple my CPU usage for every application on my 1 GHz PowerBook G4. Nor does it require 10 minutes to start up (like Suitcase X1 or Font Reserve). Nor does it require that I work by _its_ methods (like FontAgent). Every designer I know is switching over to Font Explorer. And it's FREE, to boot! I highly recommend Font Explorer! FROMAGE-HEAD The UI is extra, I love it, the activation is speed, the font store is quite nice, good to have characters table. I like the "à la" iTunes organization, with even smart sets. -auto-activation doesn't seem to work with photoshop 7 -like suitcase the app have to always be open, I prefer daemons (I mean an independant daemon) For those reasons I'll stick with font agent (even if the UI is not that great, and importing is horribly slow). Oh and one little thing: some characters in the characters table are overflowing. (Version 1.0fc4)

SHAKEBOX No, FEX has not to be open all the time! Just open it to activate or deactivate the fonts you need, close it and work like you want. FEX only has to be open to CHANGE things (which is what is meant for), not to keep fonts activated! So it's completely different to Suitcase. (Version 1.0fc4)

LOPHYTE What a great app, I just love it!! All other font management solutions failed miserably for me. I had almost given up on osx font management until I found FontExplorer X a few months ago. I've been testing it intensely and must say that this is really something big. I hope the final version will come out soon, so that I can advise all my clients and friends to switch from the other apps they really hate. Keep up the great work! (Version 1.0fc4)

ARGLBORPS Wow. What a surprise, a free font tool, full Cocoa glory and no cheesy port from elswhere or Carbon uglyness. And even more, they adapt some of the cool ideas from iTunes (integration with Online Store and simple browseability) and make a utility that might as well be called the iType or iFont for OS X. The guys at Linotype finally got the OS X drift completely. I have been shelling out bucks for font managers that sucked really badly, so this time I get this app for free from Linotype, and it doesn its job just wonderfully. I might as well get a bunch of new fonts for the money saved. This is how you make business. (Version 1.0fc4)

BSAKOWICZ FEX is one great program. I use Font Agent Pro at my home office and FEX at work. The feature set in FEX is almost on par with FA Pro, and at the free price, you really can't beat it. The only caveat we have with it is that we are using pre-CS versions of Adobe products which don't have proper plug-ins so fonts need to be manually activated for those programs. Otherwise, this is a great app.... LOVE the growl support for activation notification. That reminds me a lot of FA Pro. (Version 1.0fc4)

MACERICG New release has Illustrator CS1 support and imports without crashing (a la the beta). Looks like a winner. Extensis take note: This is a FREE product. Don't know that acquiring Suitcase and now Font Reserve was that wise a move. Said it before, but the only thing I miss is sorting by classification (Serif, San Serif, Blackletter, Dingbat, etc.) Add that feature and all bases are covered. (Version 1.0fc4)

ANONYMOUS This is very very cool. The only thing is it froze up on me when I added a font folder that had a postscript font that only had a suitcase and was missing the other half of the font. ANONYMOUS This is a very impressive font manager that is both stable and robust enough for professional use. While it is still in beta stage and therefore doesn't deserve too much criticism, it is nevertheless lacking in some ways. First, there is no way to rearrange the columns and views to more easily accommodate existing font management habits, so one must deal with learning a new, albeit relatively simple, interface, and this can slow you down in a production environment. Second, there is no way to activate *any* font temporarily if FEX thinks you already have it. So if you regularly use customer supplied fonts you may find that you when you think you are adding (and activating) some fonts they don't get added unless you remove the existing fonts that FEX believes are the same. You can have FEX do this in the preferences but that's awkward font management as you will later need to add those removed fonts again. When I add fonts I know what fonts I want activated. I don't like font managers that think they know more about which fonts I want than I do. Third, the interface is actually very large. Narrower might be better so it doesn't obscure as much desktop real estate. Fourth, a contextual menu to add fonts temporarily would avoid the problem of a large and cumbersome interface. Fifth, and no font manager can yet do this, it needs to be able to read Windows PostScript fonts. InDesign can do this if the fonts are placed in it's own fonts folder, so it is possible for the fonts to be used in OS X. The first font manager to make those fonts globally available will trump all other font managers. Sixth, it needs to allow the editing of old Mac OS font suitcases, much like the venerable old utility Font/DA Mover does. Some may not see the usefulness of having such a tool, but for those who need it it would be invaluable. Overall though FEX gets high marks for value and stability. For many people it will be the only font manager they will ever need. For some production pros however, it still needs a bit of work. The price is certainly right, though I have sneaking suspicion that the price may go up in the official release. (Version 1.0fc3)

MACERIC Only one thing is missing from this program that designers will miss from Font Reserve -- that is the ability to sort fonts by classification. ANONYMOUS Absolutly outstanding! Faster and MUCH better than Suitcase, and far more stable! Great tools that formerly required other programs, such as font cache cleaning are there, too! I love that the idea of having the store built into the program iTunes style allows this program to be distributed free. I'm sure that will offset the cost of development in no time, especially for users in SoHo environments! If they tie in this program with other sites, like Identifont to allow identification and purchase from the app, it will put all other competition out of business. Remarkably stable, too. But I would expect no less from a font management program designed by an actual font foundry! Great work! (Version 1.0fc2)

THE ANONYMOUS USER First of all, I really like FEX. Maybe it sounded like I did not. FEX is surely the best out there - when it goes final. But for me, it's slow in showing the font list (> 5000 fonts) and in auto activating. Sometimes, auto activation doesn't work at all. Anyway, it's a beta, and for a beta, it's quite good indeed. Makes Suitcase X1 look very aged
I don't bash the app. On the contrary, I'll continue to try it out. Maybe I'm doing something wrong
? And: no, I'm not a developer of FontAgent Pro, and I guess, I'll never be :-D (Version 1.0fc2)

THE ANONYMOUS USER I mean searching the font list in the upper right

THE ANONYMOUS USER OK, the delays in the list has to do with font family grouping (I prefer that). If you switch that off, speed is good. But auto activation with Quark doesn't really work. DANA SUTTON I used this and I screwed up my fonts beyond belief, I had uninstall FontExplorer and (since it had moved many of my fonts to a special Cache>Metadata folder) bring them up from backup. JERONIMO This is a godsent. Suitcase was slow and buggy, always has been. FontAgent looked good at first, but is cumbersome at best. I sincerely HOPE that they will start charging for this. Why? To be commercially viable, to make sense for them. If they keep it free, some manager might someday axe this project as it doesn't produce enough revenue (I assume they plan to justify the give-away application by promoting their font store through it). So, really, I wouldn't mind paying $40 or so it. If for that money they guarantee to keep developing it. (Version 1.0fc2)
