AV  Stop working for me today and in trying to get it to work again other problems have come up. I love this app but i have no choice but to move to Vuze because i cannot get it to work again - bar a complete reinstall of the OSX which im not going to do (but might have to do bcos of other issues created trying to solve this problem!). Ive deleted the app and reinstalled and it still wont work. Left a post on the support forum but no response as yet. Vuze is not bad .... many a few to many pref options .... but i will have to get used to it.....

ROBOTANK  Transmission 1.76 does not correctly report uploaded and downloaded data amounts to the tracker. It's already been banned by at least one private tracker that I'm aware of. I strongly suggest that anyone using private trackers, where accurate data measuring is important, stick with 1.75 or revert to it if you've already upgraded.

ROBOTANK  I can definitely file a bug report if the devs are unaware of this problem. My own experience with 1.76 in the short time I used it confirms the issue--multiple private trackers were reporting substantially different data amounts (that is, in the hundreds of megabytes) for me than Transmission was showing, an issue i didn't have with 1.75, where data amounts were spot on. I'll pop over to the Transmission website today and report this if it hasn't already been done.

ROBOTANK  Sorry to post again--MU won't let me edit that post even though it's been less than five minutes. I just wanted to assure you that I'm not making anything up here to slander Transmission. I think Transmission is the best Mac torrent client, and I've used it almost exclusively for several years. I'm simply giving fellow users the heads-up on an important issue by posting a comment (not a review!) containing information I've confirmed to be true.

SPRINGHEELMAC  I had the same problem and could not use the internet while sharing with any kind of speed. Forget about using Vonage. This being unacceptable, I thoroughly tested all versions and found 1.42 to allow sharing and decent browsing speeds at the same time. Its a little bit of a trade off though; something about the way 1.42 handles peers makes the timing of the sharing, um, a little random. Still, it allows me to "surf and share" so thats the version I currently use. And yes, I've tried ALL the versions available extensively before settling on that one. Also, prior to OS X 10.5.8 this wasn't always the case, so it may be a synergistic effect between the operation system version and Transmission.

THREEDEE912  Try decreasing the amount of connections it makes in the prefs. Some routers don't like it when apps like Transmission try to make 500 connections at a time. I have mine set to 250 without much of a slowdown.

SAMUEL222  I love this app, the download is quite fast.

The only annoying thing is that using only part of my bandwidth (say, 1/5),

it nevertheless does not allow me to download anything else. In other words,

when transmission is working, I can see that it uses only a small part of

my bandwidth. But, at that time my internet connection is essentially paralyzed.

My computer: MacBook Snow Leopard OS.

::MILE::  Same here...and it's been like that as long as I can think back with previous versions of Transmission and even on different computers...!! :(

So there's clearly something wrong with the way the app uses bandwidth because it simply disables all other net activity when running, no matter how much (or how little) bandwidth I actually allocate to it...!

WIZEGUY  I upgraded to 1.75, but I'm having problems with freezing (beach ball of doom) for about 1-2 seconds every 5 seconds or so. I can see the download stalling during the freezes, starting and then stopping again at the next freeze. Downgraded to 1.74 and everything's fine. I'm on 10.6.1 and the file being downloaded is HUGE +100GB...if that helps. Otherwise fantastic application.

Gone back to Vuze which IMHO is a little too much... pretty soon Vuze will probably evolve into a whole OS. :)

MEEGO  The latest versions (1.73 and 1.74) of Transmission have some issues.

1.73 and 1.74 are currently homing on ban list on some trackers (i.e brokenstones), because of various "connective problems" and up/down data sometimes not being counted by trackers which enforce ratios.

Hopefully, 1.75 will sort things out. Until then, stick with 1.72.

STILL_SPARKLING  I don't get all the hate.

Do you complainers use just one app to process your camera's RAW files? Or just one app to watch movies on your computer? How about writing? I sure don't. I have at least 3 apps for each of those categories because some work better than others depending on the task at hand. So why do you expect Transmission to be any different? It can't be all things to all people. Like any application it has its strengths and weaknesses.

In my opinion, it's the fastest, the most reliable, and has the most logical interface of all the Mac-based bittorent clients. Every once in a while, there's a bad update and I'll have to go back a version, but for the most part, Transmission performs like a champ. Every once in a while I might have to use another client like Vuze (formerly Azureus), but I always come running back to Transmission. Vuze is ugly, bloated, and slow by comparison, but I keep it around for the same reason I keep an extra RAW processor installed: you never know. Sometimes the spare app will come in handy.

PETER_EARTHMAN  64bit applications uses a lot of memory (virtual ram is only used when low on real memory).

Most times it is even slower running in practice. Integers are a little bit faster to handle with 64bit cores though. Float is slower to handle.

The only real advantages is you can use more then 4GB memory. Nothing more nothing less.

64bit is actually a big hype with little value for 99,99% of all users.

Are we all going to buy 10.6 because it has full 64bit support? No

Are we all going to buy 10.6? Yes

CORPSECORPS  I don't care if the fan-boys frown me to death again. I still say this app has problems in cases where the ugly behemoth, Vuze, still gets the job done.

Transmission's main problem is that in small swarms, it doesn't; transmit that is. In those cases it's both a patience and ratio killer.

Tough getting a significant download rate when Transmission doesn't connect to enough peers to keep data going out. (they can't ALL be choking me) On the other hand, it does allow a surprising amount of data to flow in RELATIVE to what goes out, so i wind up with a horrible ratio. Then i have to find a large swarm on something i don't want, to fix my ratio.

Currently in a situation with less than 10 seeds and less than 10 peers where after a day and 950 MB in with only 260 MB out, Transmission fails to connect to even 1 solitary swarm member. I may increasingly detest each new version of Vuze, but i don't ever remember encountering this kind blockade.

Transmission's UI is bare bones, boring, and provides little information beyond the basics.

BLABLABLA@DODGIT.COM  naah, I think you are talking about your internet connection or provider or both. Or restart your router :)

It's the same at my place: when I use a torrent application, my provider, ignoring the fact that I pay him many dollars per month, blocks torrent traffic while he can recognize it.

Therefore, ...

catch the blocklist,

activate encryption

and use OpenDNS.

CORPSECORPS  I've checked everything to do with the software and router too many times to remember. It's absolutely NOT my ISP, which does everything the best way possible, and cares little about transfers as long as i don't go over my limit, which is HUGE.

Catch the blocklist? Don't know what it means, but i do subscribe to one.

Encryption is on; well, i at least Prefer encrypted connections.

THEBLUENOWHERE  There are lots of polarised comments on the torrent clients on Macupdate. I don't really care for them much. Try the applications that look most promising for your needs and then keep the best.

Transmission works for me, very mac-like clean interface with some nifty features. :)

They've just added DHT too. Though I don't think you can create trackerless torrents yet.

Before i had some troubles with some slowness of my internet connection while using Transmission, as well as slowness when quitting the app.

Now, Transmission is able to Download and Upload at full speed without distrubing my internet connection and while i am browsing the web. This update really rocks !

Just keep up the good work, Transmission team !

MISHA  I wish there was a feature where if I opened 5 .torrents at the same time, I didn't have to choose the save as location for each one manually. In other words, so that all 5 would be presented to me as if it were a single .torrent and thus I only need to choose a single location (the way Azureus/Vuze works).

ADAM PETTIT  Transmission is by far the best BitTorrent client for the Mac. The key with a client as such is of course the interface, automatic NAT port mapping, auto-download discovery, web interface (why?), etc. All of these features, Transmission does extremely well. The interface and preference navigations are simple enough. I recommend this client over the others.

*....

DETTO  Transmission went unusable for me since 1.5x. In 1.60 it's still a whole mess for me.

The problem: I start more then one (lets say 2) downloads. Both of them are folders which contain several files. Transmission connects to peers, starts downloading, speed goes up to about 400,500,800 KB and so on, and then suddenly hangs/stops for a sec or a bit longer (and it's not just the GUI, I checked the network bandwith with iStat). So after this 1 sec or bit longer Transmission asks the connected peers again to send data and begins downloading. Speed goes up, data is written to HDD, Speed goes up even more, and bam, again a hang/stop. It's damn annoying, pretty agressive to the connected peers (this though is just a guess) but most of all just unbearable for a torrent client.

I hate to mention it (because many of you don't like it, its a port and so on) but uTorrent has no problem with that. I think it *peep* in features and ease of use and everything, but at least it gives me my maximum download speed and it has absolutely no problem with writing much data to HDD or hanging/stopping.

ALBABE  I have this problem with Transmission... Most of the positive "reviews" here sound like ads on old AM Radio. I don't believe they're "users..." more likely the Developers and their sycophants.

I also have a problem with the developer. When I used to update this client every time a new version was available, I would use their forums and give them what I thought was constructive information/feedback. I'm not a Programmer and I certainly don't understand a lot of the tech stuff but I always thought I was being polite.

I got the impression that they didn't much like any criticism at all, as everything I posted was maligned and I was insulted and called all sorts of names for using the wrong terms.

For the most part, I love my .082 (3009), but whenever I updated all sorts of new problems developed.

I am curious if the user can Update Tracker when he/she feels like. The last new version I tried didn't allow this. I don't remember if it was no longer in the PullDown Menu or if the Client just wouldn't do it anymore.

I'd love to use a newer version, but every time I tried, I had problems.

You keep throwing out this accusation, so once again I'll deny it. Neither developer posts reviews here.

> I got the impression that they didn't much like any criticism at all, as everything I posted was maligned and I was insulted and called all sorts of names for using the wrong terms.

The changes in 1.60 include over 40 suggestions made by many users. If you don't believe me, go look at the "complete list of tickets" linked to at transmissionbt.com.

> I am curious if the user can Update Tracker when he/she feels like. The last new version I tried didn't allow this.

Yes and no. Most trackers have minimum intervals allowed for Update Tracker. Since updating more frequently than that is likely to get you and Transmission banned, we grey out the button until that interval has passed.

KEVINDK  You have to understand. There have been a TON of non-legit trollers about ever since uTorrent came out. They have made up lies about troubles with transmission that simply didn't exist. Macupdate has had to delete a ton of them. So more than likely when they first hear someone complain about something they "heard before" they may react as if it's another troll. ALBABE  CHARLES_BT:

Wow, 8 Frownie Faces. In all the years I've relied on MacUpdate to be "Fair & Balanced," I've never seen a Client (Transmission) that is Policed so diligently and dutifully by it's followers.

MacUpdate is supposed to be a place where Users can honestly share their experience about a Client. From my experience in the Tranny Forums, they (and likely you too) think that anyone who disagrees with them is a flamer. I'm not. I'm an honest User of Transmission.

"You keep throwing out this accusation, so once again I'll deny it. Neither developer posts reviews here."

A lot of the "glowing" reviews here are abstract hyperbole... much like radio ads. They seem either paid for political advertisements or Transmission's dutiful sycophants trying to balance the other comments in here.

That does beg the question, "Who are you?" Besides someone who admits they have 3 (three) handles in here. Why not one?

You say in here, " Neither developer posts reviews here..." and then on the reviews for uTorrent (Dec 4, '08) you said, "I am one of Transmission's developers..." I'm confused.

"The changes in 1.60 include over 40 suggestions made by many users. If you don't believe me, go look at the "complete list of tickets" linked to at transmissionbt.com."

As I said, the Forums were mostly very sycophantic and rude, so I don't check them any more. One of the Developers was quite the jerk to me when I asked what I thought was legitimate questions. I'm not a masochist. But what's your point?

I've already explained that I use Transmission almost exclusively. That doesn't have anything to do with the defensive nastiness that I received when I was part of their forums. A lot of the posters in there were much like Hugh's response to a comment I posted here (below).

* I said Killer Klown Kar was an alias of mine because he posts knee-jerk flames against Transmission. It was a joke!

* My point about the 40+ changes in 1.60 that came from user suggestions is that you said we aren't open to suggestions, but we are...

MISHA  FWIW We (MacUpdate) monitor all comments posted. We delete obvious trolls. We log things like IPs to confirm whether the same person is posting comments, etc.

To address your concern: Transmission is a really popular, free app. It's not surprising it has so many positive reviews. Look at other apps that have tons of downloads (VLC) and see all the positive "hyperbole" going on there, too.

People like free stuff that works, especially when developers are attentive. That is what Transmission is.

Also, ask yourself: What's the point in artificially hyping up a free app? Obviously not to sell more copies. And the download #s speak for themselves.

May 4 2009

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  Yeah... I don't much see the point in glorifying an app when it's... free. It's a free app and people like it. That's all. It's certainly not to increase the sales. I too noticed the major flood of uTorrent trolls coming in here and just spamming the Transmission page. It was ridiculous. But yes when someone says there's flaws with Transmission, it's because of those trolls that people react based on previous experiences in such a bad way. Some people are just immature and need to get over the fact that it's just a freaking app... and others are just loyal fans. Your comment may be legit, but it seems people are still pissed off by all that nonsense. I've had my fair share of problems with Transmission... and I still have some occasionally, but I've read up on the app and have fixed most of them with some settings modifications... such as Transmission raping my bandwidth and not allowing the ability to browse the internet. Solution? Cap the download speed. *gasp* Yeah... something so simple for such a big issue.

But I know where you're coming from. Some people just cannot believe that something could be wrong with Transmission... which is silly. All programs have bugs. That's why new versions come out all the time and patches and updates to address these issues reported by users. It's a combination of user input and developer output that continues to make this program great. So... keep it up. :)

As for uTorrent... there's not a snowball's chance in Hades of me using it on the Mac unless they seriously actually give a rat's toosh about the Mac platform and make it like it is on Windows. Because on Windows, it's the only torrent app I'll use. It's just a joke on the Mac.

SMTIPS  Vuze had a feature to either ban or limit upload speed to any individual client downloading from you. What I'm looking for is the same feature. Say I have a list of 15 people that I'm uploading to...and each is getting 15k. Some are sharing back and I'm downloading from them at say 5 to 100k..as an example. Others...usually a few in the list...are sharing at a rate of like 0.1 kbps. I don't like to give my bandwidth to leechers who can't upload. I can appreciate that some people aren't able to upload very fast..my opinion on that is..just download one torrent at a time. If you're only able to upload at 5k then you probably shouldn't be wasting your time or other people's time by even using a torrent program. But there are other people who don't know what they're doing with a file sharing app and they just load up a list of 20 torrents and then their up speed is distributed in ridiculously small amounts...and I'd just as soon SHARE on at least a 1:4 basis...but this using all my big upstream pipe to "share" with people who can't or won't give it back is a bunch of hooey, and I'd like to block people who aren't sharing and just leeching. Vuze had this feature, I hope the makers of Transmission read this and think about it.

CORPSECORPS  What?!

Go down the list of recent comments and you can't deny that virtually every negative comment has a huge number of frowns (larger than almost any seen on other software) and likewise, every glowing comment has several smiles.

Also, when a new review or comment is made, it takes mere minutes for it to get hit with multiple smiles or frowns.

Off in the rest of the real and online world, i've been able to locate many people (as with every other piece of software on the planet) who don't actually get good performance with, or who don't necessarily LIKE Transmission.

CORPSECORPS  @KEVINDK: In response to your continued demand for this link, I did NOT say ANYTHING about posting a LINK from the Transmission forum that i was told to post here. The "hit squad" here has poor reading comprehension as well as being arrogant and illogical.

If you reread near the top of the relevant topic, it was ROBBY.IS.ON who said i should put a link HERE to my post at the Transmission forum so he could look at it, to which my reply was (exact copy) "Why? You tell me to take the issue there, which i already did. Now you want me to bring it back here?

Nobody there had an answer!"

I'll admit that in retrospect that sounded slightly snotty, but i didn't see why i should take time, since i'd already done my due diligence in trying to locate an answer, and while finding some confirmation of the port problem, never got any answers OTHER than: 'try going to {insert site}', which i had done plenty of.

So this link you keep demanding of me never existed, but was a fabrication YOU created based on your misreading my post, OR just what it is, YOUR demand again that i provide a link to that forum.

No more basis to it than your assuming lies where none are demonstrated. To the contrary, during the argumentative debacle, you didn't give my proof (Empornium not allowing use of Transmission) credence though it was clear. It's being a pr0n site has zero to do with the relevant FACTS: It's a torrent tracker with 800,000+ members which has the claimed policy: DON'T USE IT.

Lastly, since i've basically been treated like excrement here for nothing more than posting a minor issue (Transmission port problem), a wee bit of info (some trackers not wanting people to use Transmission, a policy which i did NOT say i agreed with), pointing out the group of run amok fans of the software here which load up every post with smiles and frowns depending solely on the disposition of the post toward the software, or other "hit squad" members, which is blatantly obvious (others having noted it before i did), and noting bigotry and condescension of same (which YOU, HAPPYSUDSY, KKK, BLHAB, and ANONYMOUS have amply demonstrated in the two remaining topics i started, as well as various other places), i think i'll refrain BOTH from providing ANYTHING you (or any other "hit squad" members) demand (since it's obvious you'd still consider me beneath contempt REGARDLESS of anything i were to do, and have no answer to my issues with the software and would rather just shift focus), or from making any further response to you at all, in future.

When/if i get Transmission functioning properly, i will then render my review of it according to actual experience using it, setting aside that certain of it's advocate's are such rectal orifices.

KKNOPP  I've always gotten decent speeds with Transmission since I began using it after I stopped using tomato. But it seems the last 3 updates the speeds are more consistent through each torrent now. I usually only download 1-2 torrents at a time. With this latest two builds I put 10 in there just to see what it would do. I STILL got decent download speeds. I couldn't believe it. Tranmission's bandwidth allocation seems to be working better than even the last version. (And then I didn't think it could get much better.. ) I can honestly say it's the best torrent application *I* have used.

I do however have one small complaint/bug. Sometimes when trying to remove a torrent (The torrent and the file) Transmission will either hang on me for a few minutes, or crash. I've replicated it on 3 different computers as well. Not a real big deal. It didn't happen every time. It would only seem to happen when I have just loaded it into Transmission, then change my mind soon after and delete it. And even then it doesn't happen EVERY time. I am going to go on #Transmission on IRC and see if I can't figure it out.

Other than that, ROCK SOLID. The fastest bit torrent application out.

The latest Version of Transmission is using 15% to 20% of my CPU on a MacBookAir.

Transmission only has to handle four files and the download speed for all those four together is just 20kb/sec. (upload is only about 10kb/sec)

FOOFOORABBIT  There's a lot of disinfo agents on the internet.

Yes, it's true. Some people actually get paid to post fake reviews (glowing reviews for their own product and reviews that tarnish the competition.) That said, it's not too hard to tell the fake ones from the real ones.

If you take two recent examples: 69NUMBER69 and SURFSPIRIT ...if you click on their names you can see that 69NUMBER69 has actually filled out some personal info and both 69NUMBER69 and SURFSPIRIT have reviewed many other software products.

Fake reviews are usually from people with only a few reviews under their belts and likely post zero personal info on their profile page.

From another point of view, Transmission is open source. Anyone is free to take a look at how it works. Nothing's secret with Transmission so there's little reason to lie about anything because anyone that could read the source code could eventually know if something is fishy in the reviews.

A lot of people have acknowledged that earlier versions of Transmission had a bottleneck in the way it found peers...it certainly seems to be solved in 1.50.

There's nothing to hide...Transmission is a very elegant BT client. Face it, this client got lots of reviews and not all of them can be from disinfo agents. People like this software.

UNIQUE-ISH  Transmission is not only free, it is open-source.

Nobody is getting paid for this. It is the result of a community of developers working for free collaborating together to make what is really an outstanding BT client for the Mac. It would be nice to get paid to say that, but nobody is signing any paychecks when it's an open-source application. What would be the point?

KIWILEGAL  I have used Tranmission for years. Has been a great piece of software. But now finding that it is less reliable than before, and slower. I have used version 1.42, the new bet 4 and beta 5. I am finding that speed is right down and that for some torrents, it just stalls. Restarting Transmission gets it going again (and hundreds of seeders/peers magically reappear) but, basically, I have lost the ability to just leave it going.

So I tried uTorrent. I prefer the Transmission GUI and features, but uTorrent is steadily working on the torrents that Transmission stalled on. And speed seems comparable.

Hope the next stable version of Transmission restores reliability.

I'm connecting to hundreds of peers now, something I've never been able to do before, even though I've always had Transmission's connectivity maxed out at 3000 peers. (Edit that in preferences, you won't be sorry.) In addition, my download speed has topped 1.0M, something I've never accomplished before. (It does decrease the upload speed, but once your downloads are finished, they will climb back up.) Try this version (1.50B4), you won't be sorry. Believe me, they have made improvements. The last beta was worlds better than anything since 1.34, and this version is the best one yet. I am truly impressed; I had almost given up on any new version of Transmission until the last beta. Both programs participate in "distributed computing" for good causes; basically, your computer processes data for research in various fields in the background during idle time (or continuously,if you so desire, that's what I do). Pull the stick out of your arse and calm down. Having been using Transmission for a LONG time now, I was experiencing the same exact problems as EDGE (and I have never experienced them until recently). Torrents would take an eternity to start, and I made no changes whatsoever to my network settings and all associated ports were open to Transmission. I even edited various configurations in the Firewall, but to no avail. This new Beta seems to have fixed the problem entirely as torrents start almost instantly and the speed boost in download speed is exponential. I tested a torrent with 1000+ seeders with the previous version and the speeds were ridiculous. I downloaded and installed this new Beta, and re-opened transmission, resumed the exact same torrent... and it started downloading instantly and at the max download rate for my internet service. uTorrent is fine and all, but there's no reason for the hiccups in Transmission. The issue seems to be addressed with this latest Beta, but seriously dude... get the heck off your high horse and stop shoving your hate down someone's throat because you think they are a fanboy, are stupid, or various other reasons. You just come off sounding like a tool. And uTorrent isn't crap. It's been working perfectly for me for years. So I could just as easily bash your bad experience with uTorrent just as you bashed EDGE's experience with Transmission. Things happen. Sometimes things we can't explain... but the developers read these comments and try to fix issues as best they can. That's why we have an open community for a program that is fortunately free to us Mac users. Count your blessings and don't bash others for such petty things.

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  I'm sure if you really dive into yourself and analyze the situation, you'll realize there really wasn't a situation to begin with. You formed a situation in your mind. You made it a situation. You could have chosen to not respond, or you could have chosen to respond in a more kindly manner. If you can't comprehend the simplicity of this idea, then I don't know what to tell you. All I saw was you bashing someone because they were having an issue. Were you having a bad day or is your life really that bleak? We don't see the world as it really is. We see the world as a reflection of ourselves. If you get this angry at something so trivial and mundane on the internet, I really hope it isn't in any greater proportion to how you react to things in your life. Now I assume as you read this, hate and anger will be brewing its way inside your veins out into your very fingertips as you eagerly wait to respond yet again in an overly assumptive and brash manner. Grow up.

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  Okay... I did some research and you are absolutely correct. I will give you the benefit of the doubt because as I re-read some of EDGE's rhetoric, he is coming off as a bit of a moron. "I'm sorry to all you Transmission users" is about as big of a red flag of troll-ism as it gets. That's just a recipe for flame wars to start. So in that respect, you are in the right because that is an irritating comment. "I only starting using uTorrent..." blah blah blah... yeah right. He writes almost the same exact crap in the uTorrent discussion as he did here, so now I'm starting to see the big picture. I do apologize for jumping on your case. I can't stand trolls. Carry on with your EDGE bashing, we don't need that crap. Oh and you can take the above comment and apply to EDGE instead... lol. Carry on.

EDGE777  I used to use Vuze. It worked well, but was way too busy a UI.

I switched to Transmission. I loved the simple UI. I love that it was easy to use. I loved that you could select which file to download. However, it always took a long time to start downloading (sometimes 20 minutes), and uploading was very weird. Once it got going it could download at the 200 KB/s, but this was very rare.

Tonight, I tried to download 24. After 10 minutes it finally started to download, at around 10 KB/s (sloooooow). I thought maybe it was the traffic, maybe my ISP. I upgraded to the new beta, still the same; but then I tried something.

I downloaded uTorrent beta. Within 10 seconds it was connected and downloading. Within 20 seconds it was downloading at 100 KB/s. Transmission was still downloading at 8 to 10 KB/s.

So, while I appreciate the simplicity, TRANSMISSION IS BY FAR THE SLOWEST BITTORRENT CLIENT. Something is broken, and I would definitely suggest uTorrent to all users out there.

EDGE777  I have tried every different setting, read the forums, and am no noob when it comes to computers. This might not be true for all setups, or all ISP, but there is something in Transmission which is just not the same as Vuze or uTorrent. I am not making this stuff up.

My ISP does do something weird, it routes the IP somewhere outside of my equipment. What I mean is that the IP that I see my computer as (using any IP checker), is not something that I ever see in my setup. For this, I cannot open up ports, or forward ports. This seems to greatly effect Transmission while it has no effect on Vuze or uTorrent.

Last night it would normally take Transmission 6-10 hours to download shows (say like 24). On uTorrent it took 1 hour.

For me, and there's nothing I can do to change it, the following still remain:

-it takes at least 10-15 minutes before Transmission connects.

-uploads are not fluid (they're on, they're off - seems like it's only connecting to one peer at a time)

-While I can receive downloads on Transmission of 200 KB/s, there is no rhyme or reason to it.

-Out of the box, with no changes to my set-up, uTorrent performs 5 times better than Transmission.

I'm sorry if I offended the Transmission lovers, but this is true for me, and true for others. It may not be true for you, but doesn't mean that there isn't a problem somewhere.

DOUG S.  I can sort this out rather quickly. Technically, there is nothing wrong with Transmission. It is every bit as fast as uTorrent and faster than a number of other torrenting apps on the market.

The problem is with the trackers; some of them dislike Transmission. It has something to do with the way Transmission sends requests or something to that effect. I can't remember the specifics, it's something I noticed one when trying to download a fansub. As such certain torrents from certain sources can run slower or not at all.

However this doesn't seem to be the case with any of the major torrent sites such as The Pirate Bay, Mininova or Demonoid so most people won't notice the issue.

Personally I prefer Transmission to uTorrent and Vuze simply because I feel Vuze is bloated and while uTorrent is certainly a viable alternative it's UI isn't quite as polished as Transmissions'.

That being said if I was using Windows uTorrent would be my app of choice, no contest so my allegiance could easily change somewhere down the road.

EDGE777  My issues with slow connection times (10+ minutes) are completely consistent, and not dependent on the torrent tracker. Almost all of my torrents are from Mininova or TPB and experience the same startup connection lag. This only occurs with Transmission. I think it might have something to do with my odd ISP setup (Cablevision in Mexico City), but whatever the issue, it doesn't seem to affect uTorrent or Vuze.

Also, after doing more testing, my torrent are now staying steady at the cap (for me that is around 235 Kb/s). My d/l speed with Transmission would sometimes reach that, but never stay for any period of time.

Just to be sure it wasn't the torrent, after trying Transmission, I went back to uTorrent, and the file started to download in 5 seconds.

EDGE777  I wrote an honest review. I had been using Transmission for several months before writing it. Most good reviews contain comparisons. It's pretty much that simple. You can agree with the review, or disagree. You can believe that the issue is true but localized to my experience or my ISP (along with some others), or you can choose to believe that I am lying and simply want to sway you to buy another product... wait, they're all free, nothing to be gained... At any rate, it's your choice. Some may find this review helpful. The developers of Transmission may be able to look into the connection code of other software to see what might be wrong. Some may just whine and call names. It's a free world, and with that, I am signing off never to look at this again, lol.

WIZARDLING  For the longest time I used only Transmission and I had assumed that my very slow and yo-yoing download speeds were the fault of my ISP. I thought this was as good as it got with BitTorrent. Boy was I ever wrong.

Approx. a month ago I tried out the brand new Mac port of µTorrent. Even being very beta quality software it is on average 10x faster than Transmission at getting torrents downloaded. I switched back and forth for several weeks between the two clients using the exact same torrents - it's no fluke. I even tried the old official BitTorrent client and the ageing Tomato Torrent - both were MUCH faster than Transmission and on par with µTorrent.

Now if it was just speed I might even stick with Transmission while µTorrent's bugs are ironed out. Transmission's UI and feature set are so much better, and Tomato Torrent - which works well - cannot selectively download part of a multi-file torrent. That feature is also buggy in µTorrent.

But sadly Transmission began a couple months ago to allocate all it's upload bandwidth to just one torrent 95% of the time, with predictable negative performance results for the neglected torrents. This has made Transmission almost impossible to use, and the refusal by the developers to even continue to discuss the issue does not inspire confidence in an eventual resolution.

As a result my recommendation has to be to avoid Transmission for the foreseeable future - and that's a damn shame :-(

WIZARDLING  Are you on a PPC Mac? That's the only time I've heard µTorrent will crash all the time. It's been very stable IME. Very buggy and feature-incomplete also, but it's only crashed once for me. So don't try and make out I'm some kind of fanboy (I'd love to know how I could be when the Mac beta version of µTorrent is the first time I've ever used µTorrent on any OS). But if somehow Transmission is faster for you than µTorrent, Tomato Torrent, or the official BitTorrent client - well then, you'd should continue to use it. I won't be because I've found the opposite after weeks of testing and switching back and forth. No need to take my differing experience personally, you know.

WIZARDLING  Ah, you are right - µTorrent's developers should be clear about their lack of testing on PPC Macs. They used only Intel Macs to develop and test this port, you see. They say all that in the Forums, but that's hardly making it easily accessible information. Personally I think they shouldn't distribute a build for a platform they cannot test.

As for Tomato Torrent - it may be old and light on features, but it certainly works well, even on old G3 Macs running 10.3.9 :-) It's just a shame it doesn't support partial download of multi-file torrents. If it did I'd say the hell with Transmission and µTorrent, even if they've better and more modern UIs.

As for routers - preaching to the converted :-) Unfortunately I think it's only us geeks who bother configuring things like bandwidth management. Witness the sheer number of unsecured WiFi access points - people just plug their router in and if it works, they never touch it again. CHARLES_BT  It's interesting that your 1.42 evaluation was a month before 1.42 was released, while it was still in heavy development.

I'm not interested in changing your mind -- you've been trolling in the forums and IRC for quite some time -- but I do want to correct your misleading statement that "Transmission began a couple months ago to allocate all it's upload bandwidth to just one torrent 95% of the time."

1.42's bandwidth allocator runs twice per second, and each time it has two phases. The first phase, it goes round-robin across ALL peers in ALL torrents and tries to distribute bandwidth evenly among them. This ends once the bandwidth is all consumed or no peers' sockets are ready for more. In the second phase, any remaining bandwidth is made available first-come-first-served so that fast peers can ramp up their speeds.

Here is a screenshot of how 1.42 distributes 100 KiB/s upload speed across multiple torrents:
