THUS.SPAKE.Z Celtx is an absolutely beautiful gem of a screenwriting app, at least as good as any of the others out there costing many drachmas. Unbelievable that Celtx is free of charge. It doesn't get much better than this. Kudos and accolades to its developers. (Version 2.5.1)

JAKEFACE I have downloaded many programs from this website and have never left a comment/review. I felt the need to say a little something about this program. It is absolutely amazing, and free! I can't believe it's free, honestly. It does everything, programs like final draft do, and more. Those programs are hundreds of dollars! Like I said, amazing. Thank you so much to the developers. Cheers! (Version 2.0.2)

APPSCOUT I actually like this app. A lot. I'm sorry that my last entry a trifling bit of absurdity upset so many. Wow! You really, really hated my script! LOL FWIW, I was mocking myself for having invested so much money on FD. An app BTW, that started life as a Mac app, and has now fully become a ported Windows app for the Mac. This is not like so many crappily ported Windows apps. You likely know which ones I mean. It is truly a cross-platform app. Designed cross-platform. Which is okay, because it works well. And it looks good. I was mistaken to think that my original intent would be obvious. My bad. (Version 2.0.1)

APPSCOUT INT - DAY - COMPUTER DESK AppScout sits before his glossy screened iMac, which sits before a window in his cramped bedroom office. His wife enters the room. And he points to the iMac screen. I know Final Draft 4 cost me $399. And each update since cost $79. But, what do you think? (Version 2.0)

GREG RAVEN After using an IBM Selectric II for many years to write screenplays, I thought MS Word 3.0 was a tremendous step up. Then I switched to FrameMaker, but Adobe stopped Mac development. That dumped me back into Word, but the newer versions are weird for screenplays, despite the power of the program. I've tried other screenplay-centric programs, but Celtx has been my favorite for the last few versions. I've converted each of my old and current screenplay projects into Celtx, and I'm almost completely happy. About the only thing I'd change about the program is the way it handles (V.O.) next to the character name. First, it capitalizes it, which is not the Universal Studios format I learned many years ago. Second, when it builds lists of names from your screenplay, you will see (for example) CARL and CARL (V.O.) as separate entries. I can kinda see how some might find this a feature, but it bugs me. Still, this is a tremendous program, and it is free, AND you can sign up to share and discuss your projects on the Celtx website, which could be really nice if you're collaborating with others. By the way, the HTML files Celtx generates are very clean, code-wise, so posting your work on-line doesn't involve 30 minutes of code munging as with MS Word. (Version 1.0)

KUBLAKHAN My tip to all my fellow screenwriters. Don't waste your money on Final Draft or other such programs! This program will do the same and more! Spread the word... a free alternative to Final Draft. (Version 0.9.71)

ZIVKO When I attempted to run Celtx on my Mac Mini Core Duo, Mac OS X would simply freeze, and I would have to restart. I simply boot into Windows XP and Celtx ran fine. (Version 0.9.51)

I would disagree to the sceptic comment down below. For irrational and absent-minded, non-snobbish commoners like me, this program really seals the deal! I couldn't live without it, since it sorts all your ideas and stuff nice and easy in one convenient and streamlined facility for production planning. And the collaborative part of it is awesome. PS. Georgesimian, what specifically are you missing? Why not share your knowledge and state the items that you think are missing out? Clearly, this is a very generous application, especially while being free. And it certainly deserves some push of knowledge from people in the know. To a certain degree, I believe this app is an effort, very much derived from lots of user feedback. (Version 0.9.51)

GEORGESIMIAN This program is extremely half-baked. There's a couple good ideas in it, but it's nowhere near ready to be used in even a semi-professional environment. (Version 0.9.5)

Care to elaborate a little? Why not drop by our forum and offer some suggestions for further development. We want to offer users the best software package for film and TV pre-production. We can do that by working with our users. Thanks a lot. (Version 0.9.5)

DKI As someone who put up with FD because it was the best (of the worst) of the screenwriting programs, I say a big ol' THANK YOU to the Celtx developers. The program looks awesome, feels awesome and works amazingly well. If you are using FD and just hate looking at it and watching formatting problems reoccur, download this immediately. It looks simple but definitely is not. It handles anything I can throw at it, and I'm doing some pretty weird formatting things. The learning curve is nil. I'm SOOOOOO glad I made the switch. The collab feature is great, it's rock solid, and the newest version just adds more and more great features that the users are requesting. Bravo. Open source at it's absolute best. ANONYMOUS thanks. But so, what is the "client"? Another application? (Version 0.9.4)
| Nov 15 2005 |
STEVE PICK The client is the 'client side application', the software that runs on your computer. We plan to offer server side features that we will charge a subscription fee for. But as I say, the client and all features currently available in the Celtx client will remain free.

ANONYMOUS I had been using FD until I finally found Celtx. I'm surprised that this is free, because it's really really good. I haven't run into any real issues or bugs, but if I do, you can be sure that I make them known so that we can make this the best of its kind. (Version 0.9.3)

T Keep up the good work! Need to become software that will wipe the floor with FD and Screenwriter by doing things better and more intuitively. All I can say is: Finally something is coming! Hopefully, future releases will have real documents instead of the little awkward project folder and files. (Version 0.9.3)

ANONYMOUS Just type and go. Any autotyping that is incorrect is easy to correct though it could be tweaked.. For free software however it is a small hinderance and a joy to use. Get a script out in correct format without stopping your flow of thought. Conversations can be typed as fast as they come to mind. I love this! (Version 0.9.3)

ANONYMOUS I have just gotten started with this so I don't have enough experience under my belt to review it. However, after importing a Final Draft file, test printing and viewing the interface... WOW! With this FREE baby, I can keep track of my script and scenes much better, and stop throwing another $99 bucks at Final Draft every couple of years for beta software that never gets fully ironed out. THANK YOU! One request, though... A 'Save As' feature. I like to save a fresh copy every day, with the date in the title, in case I change something and change my mind later. (Version 0.9.3)

STEVE PICK Just wanted to chime in to allay any fears. Scripts are stored locally on your PC, ALWAYS. They are automatically saved to you Celtx profile folder. Your projects are ONLY published to the server IF you choose to do so. Version 0.9.3, to be released September 7, 2005, should make this clear as you select the location your projects are saved. celtx.com (Version 0.9.0.1)

NONA MOOSE INT - DAY - MY PLACE I'm sitting at a table with Me near the two of us. Me: Make my fears go away. Myself: What are you afraid of? Me: Other than the voices in my head? I'm afraid of seeing my screenplay credited to someone else and turned into a movie before I've finished it or sold it. Myself: How could that happen? Me: The software is written with browser technology and your files are stored on servers. Myself: Who's gonna steal 'your' ideas. (under breath) Too freakin' paranoid. VO: We heard that!
