ETHAN  Since there exist multiple (I counted 4) options, including doing the XCode 64-bit way, here's a summary:

Safari on 64-bit works with this mod from:

http://sweetpproductions.com/safariadblocker/

(Also listed here on MacUpdate)

The modifications of github are from this persons work:

http://burgersoftware.com/en/safariadblock

However, he uses the InputManager method. This has been depreciated and is NOT supported on 64-bit Applications. Apple wants the IM method to go away (google for more comprehensive commentary by some of the folks who have worked more with it).

There are also four or five forks, which I was unable to get working, looking like it had to do with the problem with IM on SL due to 64-bit.

The first mentioned build works because it uses a 64-bit build, using normal SIMBL plugins you can install via ~/Library/SIMBL/Plugins

It also takes care of installing SIMBL, using the 0.9.7a (at this time of writing) SIMBL plug.

I also assume GlimmerBlocker works, since it is NOT an InputMananger but instead proxies all your traffic as if you were on a corporate LAN and having all traffic filtered via a regular HTTP proxy. It's a great alternative solution, using components from the Mozilla Project, and is available opensource as well.

Hopefully this clears up some confusion.

AARGL  Suddenly, yesterday, I've got an error message meaning "impossible to update the list" (really "too many http redirections").

After various tries, I found out that the address of the list has changed:

Now it's https://easylist.adblockplus.org/easylist.txt

instead of http://easylist.adblockplus.org/easylist.txt

But as the "http://" is added automatically, I think there's no way of changing it to "https://"... :-(

Strangely enough, while the auto update gives an error (and so do the "update now" button), if you click the "change..." button and validate without modifying the address, it works! (at less it seems)

TOMP  I got it to work in 64-bit Safari:

- Download the updated SIMBL, uninstall the old one, install the new one. Reboot.

http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php

- Download the 64-bit Safariblock bundle, put in ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/

http://www.filedropper.com/safariblockleopardbundle

- Make sure Safari isn't in 32-bit mode (command-I on Safari).

I followed the instructions at http://code.google.com/p/safariblock/issues/detail?id=115 particularly comments #26 and #33.

(Also, the new SIMBL caused a minor problem with SafariStand, which is fixed by a new SafariStand version.)

THUS.SPAKE.Z  Upon launching Safari browser, a Safariblock "welcome" message appears right in your face on top of the just launched Safari page. I find it quite annoying. There's no apparent way to disable it from appearing.

True you can easily quit the message but still, is the message really necessary? And in ones face no less?

Other than that annoyance, Safariblock is really fine.

CYBORG9  I agree! The very "in your face" message states, "Safariblock 2 will eliminate the annoying advertisements you see while browsing the internet".

Well, what is the message if not an annoying advertisement. And there's way to eliminate that annoying advertisement.

Developer, get rid of it; it's totally unnecessary. (I wonder, what was the developer's rationale for including it....makes no sense at all.)

D3ATHCARB4FATTY  I just uninstalled SafariBlock after using it for a few months, only to finally determine that it was the cause of my computer drastically slowing down! I'm using a Powerbook G4 with Tiger. I am also using WebKit, so not exactly Safari, so I'm not sure if that affected it or how. My browser now runs about 1.5-2x faster after uninstalling. Before there were plenty of long beach ball pauses when opening new sites or switching between tabs.

Anyway, if anyone knows how I might be able to run SafariBlock without the slowdown (and without actually running the original Safari because WebKit is awesome) I would really appreciate it.

DISCERPTOR  I'm very impressed with the update to SafariBlock. I didn't use it before because it required the tedious process of downloading the proper list files and even then didn't block the ads in the right way (like Firefox's AdBlock does). The automatic process employed now works really well, though, and other than some CPU usage inefficiency I'm very pleased overall. All it needs now is the ability to do single-user installs on Leopard and possibly the ability to choose from different adblock lists. And of course, tweaking the CPU usage would be nice. Well done overall.

Does this have anything to do with having Safari AdBlock installed? Is anyone else having this problem too?

KAZ219  Still some problems here on 10.4.11 and a G4. On some sites safari starts to eat 100% of the cpu. When I disable SafariBlock everything become normal again.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find out which website which caused this.

I think this app is a great idea though, and I really hope it will work flaslessly in a near future.

As a feature request, I would love to have the possibility of having many subscribtions. Subscribtions for very specific needs, or more localized subscriptions have a nice supplement to the easylist+easyelement subscribtion...

EJI  When I installed SB2r2, on launching Safari I got a "first-run" dialogue window that explained the basics of SB. It included a small checkbox for setting automatic updates.

I couldn't close this dialogue box and I could not open a Safari browser window. Restarting the computer, repairing permissions and relaunching Safari yielded the same results. All I could do was force quit Safari and uninstall SB.

I really relied on SB when I was running Tiger. But SB2 has been nothing but flaky.

DNELSON  PROBLEM:

Apple has made it in Leopard so that InputManagers doesn't work, unless a hack is installed. SafariBlock uses InputManagers, so how do people who don't want to make their Mac vulnerable, block ads?

If you use the InputManagers hack, you void Leopard's built-in virus protection. Supposedly, InputManagers were removed to close a security hole from Tiger on back.

Is the developer going to switch to plug-ins to make it work better and be more secure?

FSB_SOFTWARE  Terenovo, I'm afraid you are a bit confused.

First, InputManagers in Leopard work identically to in Tiger, only there are some additional permissions restrictions on installing them. They are no more or less a hack than they were in Tiger.

Second, Leopard doesn't have built-in virus protection.

Third, while it would be nice to switch to a plugin, it would be more work to achieve the same goal, and there would be no security benefit gained.

DNELSON  Hmm... I thought that Apple included new security patches -- of course they must have... I called it "virus protection" because Leopard is less likely to get a virus than Tiger was. My brother just tried to install it yesterday on Leopard, and it failed. He probably didn't change his permissions (or whatever you said needed to be done). He has one of the newest MacBooks (a couple months old).

I love your product (he does too), but somehow I don't think its going to work. Apple did say on some blog that they were trying to get away from using InputManagers (or something like that).

Oh, well. Is it really too hard to convert it to a plug-in?

Anyway, like I said, this product is nearly indispensable to him and me, but he can't use it, and once I upgrade, I won't be able to either.

Like you said, you probably could do just a few things to make it work, but he doesn't want to risk it.

Thanks for developing it!

FSB_SOFTWARE  Why won't you be able to install it? If you have security concerns that prevent you from installing, please let me know what they are specifically. However, the nice thing about 2.0, is that I've open sourced it. So if you have security concerns, you can read the entire source code.

If by virus protection, you meant security patches... installing an InputManagers is not going to disable any security fixes. It's simply an casually used and unsupported way to load code into every application. If you know what you're doing, it's extremely useful.

Maybe we should take this discussion to a private email – I'd love to talk to you further about this.

It's NOT dead in Leopard.

• Put SafariBlock in /Library/InputManagers/

• In the Terminal, type

'sudo chown -R root:admin /Library/InputManagers'

• Supply an admin password

• Start up Safari

Yay.

CORPSECORPS  I don't want to get out of my depth here, but as far as i know, the main new restrictions on InputManagers are:

1- They *must* be in /Library/InputManagers

2- The owner and group must be root and admin, respectively

3- The group must not have write permission

You might use 'Get Info' on SafariBlock and make sure everything's in order. Or Terminal. My permissions look like this:

drwxr-xr-x@ 11 root admin ... SafariBlock

Everything inside SafariBlock should also have have no write permissions for group or other.

'sudo chmod -R go-w /Library/InputManagers/SafariBlock'

simply make an InputManagers folder in /Library/ and then, after all your plugins are installed, run this command:

THEPHOTONBOY  Not sure which version I'm using. Every time I control-click on anything, image, text field, etc. in Safari Version 3.0.3 (522.12.1) the browser immediately crashes. Once I removed SafariBlock from my input managers folder the problem vanished. Also, since almost all ads on almost all websites come from a different URL every time the page is refreshed, blocking URLs is practically useless. Try this: go to an ad-heavy page, block every ad URL with SafariBlock, refresh the page and viola: all new ads flashing all over the place, as if you didn't do anything. We need an ad-blocker that allows an ad to be clicked on and have it disappear immediately. Then we will have something worth while.

TOMIS  Well the software does its job. And it's certainly easier than editing your hosts file.

On the downside, I'm leery of installing anything into the InputManagers folder as it could potentially compromise the entire system. And the frames blocker is apparently broken.

But, judging by his replies to a few of the reviews here, the developer needs to take some anger management courses. So I will abstain from giving a rating. I would give high marks but I don't believe one should be rewarded when they're a jerk to users asking honest questions.

it's too bad, because this is a great piece of software that's being hindered by the arrogance of its developer.

KOSOVAR1  YES! That response from the developer is absolutely uncalled for, especially since the reviewer apologised in advance for his probing questions. I, for one, thought the reviewer's inquiries were absolutely on the mark and I appreciate his calling our attention to what he found.

Based on the arrogant response from the developer, I'd say the reviewer's inquiries hit a raw nerve and probably for good reason. I'd steer clear of this plugin, only based on the possibility that things are not what they appear and the developer's rudeness only reinforced that impression.

FSB_SOFTWARE  Ooookk... well they appear to be cookies added by fsb.mackb.net when the url http://fsb.mackb.net/SafariBlockVersion.plist is accessed. fsb.mackb.net was my old website and mackb.net is now up for sale apparently. Look like I forgot to change the URL to http://fsbsoftware.com/SafariBlockVersion.plist in 1.15 too. But the idea that I am somehow tracking users via these cookies when they check "Check for Updates on Load" or doing something otherwise nefarious is just silly and offensive to me, and there are many things wrong with the assertion. Primarily, you're already running the code I wrote on your machine, so the use of cookies (especially cookies that are optional with a checkbox) for tracking (which are pitiful for tracking anyway, since they are only sent to one website domain and can be trivially deleted) is pointless. If I, or anyone who wrote an application that you've run, wanted to track your behavior online, they could simply install a user-level backdoor on your machine that wouldn't use cookies or otherwise leave any trace of its existence. Especially since SafariBlock is already installed in the InputManagers directory, which is essentially a hook into almost every application that you run on your machine. When you download and install applications, especially free applications, on your machine, you're engaging in a bond of trust with the software author, just like when you perform any transaction with any vendor, from a car dealership to a lemonade stand. Additionally the suggestion that, because I clearly have software security knowledge (as evidenced by my other software, such as my keylogger or decompiler), I am therefore untrustworthy is inane. I write software not for the user who uses it (sorry?) but because I'm interested in the implementation. I was interested in kernel-level key logging and password brute forcing. I wrote SafariBlock for myself, because I hate ads (as I said in the description). If you're worried about the security of your computer, you should be more worried about the inexperienced developer with little knowledge of software security (just enough to hurt you). But the type of person who releases useful software for free is very rarely (I would posit never) the type of person who includes malicious code in it. But your computer is your property, you're always free to install or not install whatever you want on it, I don't care.

KOSOVAR1  "No idea what those cookies are, but they have nothing to do with SafariBlock, and you apparently have no idea what you're talking about."

WELL, AFTER DENYING THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THOSE COOKIES AND SAFARIBLOCK, AS WELL AS ACCUSING THE WRITER OF BEING IGNORANT, YOU FINALLY ADMIT THAT IT WAS ACTUALLY YOU WHO DIDN´T UNDERSTAND THE CONNECTION. SO THANK YOU FOR THE FREE SOFTWARE (WHICH PERHAPS WE CAN NOW ASSUME TO BE SAFE TO USE IF YOUR EXPLANATION IS GENUINE), BUT MAYBE YOU SHOULD TRY NOT TO BE SO DISMISSIVE OF ANOTHER PERSON'S VALID INQUIRIES AND CONCERNS. A LITTLE LESS ARROGANCE WOULD BE NICE TOO SINCE THOSE COOKIES ARE CONNECTED TO YOU, AND FOR ALL YOUR SELF-ACCLAIMED KNOWLEGE IN WRITING SOFTWARE, MANY USERS REPORT THAT IT DOESN´T REALLY DO THE JOB FOR WHICH IT WAS INTENDED.

RHYS HARDWICK  I love this plug-in, it's invaluable after coming from linux and using firefox in the past.

The only thing I would love to be added though is an exceptions feature. Apple, to try and keep you viewing ads, I suppose, has put it's stylesheets on a site commonly used for hosting adverts. Therefore, after blocking thier site, the Apple Store does not display properly. Damned annoying.

It would be great to make exceptions for their style sheets.

HENRIKTEKNIK  This app feels spooky. It adds cookies that goes to a site that is somehow connected to the developer.

While this might not pose any risk for the end users, I think it would be appropriate if the developer added some form of explanation to this behaviour in the program description.

Seing what other types of programs have been made by this developer - key logging kexts, "mac crack" apps and somesuch - I think, in these days, with computer fraud being a trivial threat, one should be aware of anything that goes on "under the hood" of programs.

I don't mean to let this, hopefully nicely intended, and by all other means, well executed app down. And I will not rate it down either, here on MacUpdate. But you know, if one is being paranoid about computer fraud and all things related to that chapter, you probably understand the concerns that one might have, in being kept in-the-know of what's really going on with apps like this.

So my question is, it seems it only saves cookies when choosing to 'check for updates' in SafariBlock's prefs: Why does it have to save these cookies (8 in total) and what are they for?:

- SessionHitCount

- RSAddParams

- PCAddParams

- Domain

- ActionsTaken

- LastURL

- RefPage

- SessionID

I hope my question is not taken as being offensive (I don't mean to). Good luck and Merry X-Mas! :)

HENRIKTEKNIK  Dear FSB Software,

As of being uninformed. Yes, that's exactly what I am. Hence, I thought I'd send you a message, hoping you'd be kind enough to spread some light on the wonderings I had. If you don't like the idea of replying back with a quick response to questions like mine, I'd be somehow confused why you choose to register your products with a service like MacUpdate. Mind you, this is a place for questions like those I had, and still have. It's a place for information about new and updated software.

I have a lot to thank kind people like you, who dedicate their free (even not free) time to create free software like yours. That's worth a lot of kudos and respect!

If my questions were rude or annoyingly uninformed in any way, please accept my apologies for that.

But wouldn't it kind of shorten a discussion like this, if we worked together; you being the creator of fine software, and us users trying to stay as informed as we can, whereas, if any, concerns are being allowed to be asked in a politely manner? To me, that looks like an ideal situation.

Have a great summer!

Now I'm wondering if that console message is not related to SB, although I'd swear it is since, like I mentioned above, I started getting it immediately after installing SB for the first time. Is there anything else I have to do to completely uninstall SB besides move the SB folder to the Trash?

- don't show the "?"-icons for removed flash elements (and images?)

- don't leave space for the hidden pictures (i have sometimes, not always, an empty space preserved)

- update a page immediately after blocking an element

- provide an option (like in adblock) to show all blockable elements of a page

... now, i don't know how complicate it is to implement all this, so, i'm quite happy to have an adblock-like adblocker for safari as it is now. thank you very much.

RON  I like the functionality of SafariBlock however sometimes, even when no Safari windows are open, Safari is using near 40% of the CPU when this SafariBlock is installed. This usually happens after I browse for a while and continue until I close Safari and reopen it. This was never an issue before I installed SafariBlock (1.13) and stopped when SafariBlock was uninstalled. It would be great if this can be looked into and will volunteer to run any version that might help the developers to find the issue.

OLIVER  Fantastic software, works exactly as advertised.

It also seems to work on anything that uses the webkit framework (like NetNewsWire) which had nothing to do with this software... just an added bonus.

Good job.

Importing and Exporting of blocked lists would be nice. Another app I saw once uploaded your lists and combined them with other users lists to create a 'super list' which you could stay updated with. That would be nice.

ANONYMOUS  Great Safari add on. However, Saft and SafariBlock seem to clash with each other, even if Saft's ad-blocking feature is turned off. This problem occurs with Saft 8.1.5 and SafariBlock 1.13.

As some may know, Saft seems to clash with a lot of other Safari add-ons, like AcidSearch and PithHelmet.

ANONYMOUS  Its because they all got very similar features implemented in very similar but yet different ways.

Saft seems to be the most complete package, it got both ad blocking and search feature and much more... so, why use Acid/Pith, just request the features that Saft is missing and it might be added

M. H.  Oh, let's just push the competition out of the way and pull a monopoly, right? Be sane. These freeware/shareware developers are working on these products in their spare time, for very little compensation. They deserve more credit than "why use?"

Also, they're better. Daft isn't worth the money, especially since the author doesn't seem to care about the compatibility issues.

JJS1138  I've tried PithHelmet and a couple of other things, but could never find what I was looking for in an adblocker. SafariBlock is exactly what I've been waiting for - essentially AdBlock for Safari.

There are still bugs and issues here and there. For example blocked Flashed elements are not collapsed, some blocked images result in the "blue missing image box" and it is not clear if blocked elements are truly blocked or just hidden. I would also like to see a list of all blockable elements on the page (like in AdBlock).

I'm really glad someone finally decided to develop this sort of adblocking for Safari. And even with the current issues, I found SafariBlock to be well worth the download.

ANONYMOUS  It works well in 10.4.2, safari v2.0. Currently some ads when blocked provide the image unable to be loaded image, the blue box with a question mark in it. I'd like to see it be able to handle insidemacgames.com top most ad better, so that when you block it you aren't left with a huge black box.

STILL HOPING  eMac 800 OSX 10.3.9 w/ Safari 1.3 & Safari 1.31

NOTHING STILL

All contexual menu's no longer work when you right click an image or flash. Completely useless still. The last update had the same problem too.

The preference's TAB works, the file menu option to check-mark 'Right-Click Flash' both appear normal.

I thought this was supposed to block images/flash not the contexual menu's for them?

Hopefully another update will resolves this, still a good idea and I've waited this long without it, so no major problem.

WASTED AGAIN  eMac 800 - Mac OSX 10.3.9 - Safari 1.3

The ony thing this Contextual thingy does is disable Safari's contextual items on ads/flash. Which at this writing makes the software completely useless. And without SafariBlock 1.12 the contextual items are active again.

It showed up in the Safari's preferences menu options and dialog's tab. So installing it in either location seemed to work.

Until I see a contextual menu even show up in Safari, I'd have two give this version poor results for now.

Good idea, keep trying, would definately like to block that crap it advertises for.

ANONYMOUS  YES!

I've been waiting for someone much more clever than myself to bring an AdBlock equivalent to Safari. This is just right!

MUCH simpler than PithHelmet, yes, but that's a good thing. PH is overkill if all you want to do is block ads quickly and easily (*some* people installed it and actually wondered why *it* wasn't a simple AdBlock clone until they realized it was capable of those functions, but not expressly designed for them).

It's nice of people to 'encourage' the developer to create nothing but new and brilliant ideas, but honestly, sometimes all that's needed is a "wheel" and not a "high-efficiency circular conveyance platform"..

ANONYMOUS  Got this error message in Console a few times, within minutes or even seconds of one another, right after installing SafariBlock:

2005-08-28 02:35:46.244 Safari[3549] WebNetscapePluginEmbeddedView(0x70cd1b0) - NSView not correctly initialized. Did you forget to call super?

The string inside the parentheses is different every time (also seen 0x6731610 and 0x7571aa0).

Also got this error a few times, but I'm not 100% certain it's because of SafariBlock:

looks like the developer's instructor was kinda confusing...

1)Download SafariBlock 1.11

2) mount the dmg

3) go to ~/Library and look for "InputManagers" If you do not have it then create a new folder named "InputManagers" (exactly as shown without quotes"

4) drag the "SafariBlock" folder from the mounted dmg

to "InputManagers" folder.

5) if you had Safari open then quit it and start it up again

the icon in preference show up properly and it load find now.

Q) SafariBlock preference doesn't show up! SafariBlock doesn't work!

A) Make sure SafariBlock is installed in the *user's* library's inputmanagers folder, NOT the system or root library's inputmanagers folder. If an inputmanagers folder doesn't exist for the user, create one.

Q) SafariBlock crashes!
