MACD  I used this software for my Logitech Revolution mouse, and it worked OK. At least better than Logitech's own crappy drivers.

However, every time my Mac returned from sleep, it lost its settings. I have emailed the author, and got a response that it is a known problem, even received some script I was supposed to launch in order to reload drivers after sleep. The problem is, the script almost never worked. Had to unplug and plug the USB dongle every time.

This is a 1.5 years ago story. The problem exists this long, and it never was fixed. Author just doesn't really care it seems.

Recently though, I have purchased Kensington's Expert Mouse trackball, which comes with its own set of drivers. Installed them in addition to SteerMouse, and now when using the trackball, the cursor started to suddenly jump around.

Long story short, tried to replace SteerMouse with USB Overdrive, and the problem gone!

Now, I have switched to USB Overdrive completely. It is better software with more responsible developer and less bugs. And it doesn't conflict with MouseWorks driver for my trackball.

MAC007  I've got to say this is a great little program with just one little quirk. Whenever I restart my MacPro the left, middle, right, and button four on my Logitec mouse work as I set them but the rest don't work at all. The only way to restore them to active status is to reinstall USB Overdrive and then the buttons work just fine. I then turn off USB Overdrive or deinstall it until I restart the MacPro again. A very strange symbiosis if you ask me.

F451  For those who have been inquiring about Apple Magic Mouse support the developer has posted the following on their website:

"The Apple Magic Mouse significantly differs from general mice. Unfortunately, SteerMouse is not able to support it. We are now developing a driver especially for the Magic Mouse. It will be released as a new product and available from this December. We are very much looking forward to this release."

LOUNGE DELUXE  I agree, SteerMouse is a wonderful addition to (in my case) the Mighty Mouse, and above all customer support is excellent.

I'm convinced SteerMouse will be updated soon for the Magic Mouse (if necessary at all?). Now how sweet would it be if the dev is able to program new finger gestures replacing the side buttons and the button under the scroll wheel of the Mighty Mouse!

MEGAMAN  Overall, works ok.

A bit bummed about some of the Logitech mice constantly requiring 'reconnection' to keep all buttons mapped.

Also, since V4 my Mac won't wake from sleep (i.e. if I put it to sleep manually either by selecting sleep from drop-down menu or via sleep button on my keyboard) - forcing me to do a restart. Not happy about this so I've uninstalled it and now using USB Overdrive until this bug is fixed.

LEES  I also had problems with new version. Really couldn't get anything to work right. Even at highest setting, the cursor was very slow. Also,

couldn't get autoclose to work. I simply uninstalled and reinstalled the previous version, reset my values, and everything is fine again.

I really didn't have any problems with the previous version. Sometimes, I guess it's best to leave well enough alone.

ROBOTANK  I'm having a major issue with version 4.01. After upgrading, my mouse doesn't respond to left clicks about half of the time. This gets annoying really quick. I've emailed a bug report to the developer. SteerMouse is great, and I hope they're able to help me resolve this. I'm using a Logitech MX Revolution on Snow Leopard 10.6.1. Anyone else experience a similar issue?

ROBOTANK  Well it turns out this issue has nothing to do with SteerMouse. After extensive troubleshooting, I realized the problem occurred even when SteerMouse wasn't installed, and it happened with the trackpad as well as the mouse. Something is wreaking havoc with my system, and I can't figure out what it is. Too many strange things are happening these days. I think it's about time for a wipe and clean install, which I should have done with Snow Leopard the first time. I'm sorry to initially pin this problem on SteerMouse, but it did start immediately after I installed 4.0.1. Some coincidence.

REDNAIL  Awesome software. Has never caused me any issues at all.

Using it with a Logitech Revolution MX, a great mouse with possibly the worst software ever.

Why the big boys like Logitech and M$ can't make a driver half as good as this I will never understand. But thank god there is SteerMouse!

ROBOTANK  I've always been happy with SteerMouse. I haven't tried USB Overdrive, so I can't make any comparison, but I would recommend SteerMouse to anyone without hesitation. Version 4.0 doesn't make huge changes, but it does add a couple of nice tweaks and fix a couple bugs. I wasn't having any issues with 3.9 on Snow Leopard, but people who are running the 64-bit kernel should now be able to use SteerMouse with it.

RUDHY  I was using this for log time, because USB Overdrive seems dead, but now Overdrive is better than ever and SteerMouse still must launch external app instead of using prefpane. Shame. Overdrive is rock solid and can do a lot more than just mouse handling, so I think I'll say "goodbye SteerMouse!" ...for good.

RUDHY  I was using SteerMouse for almost three years and it's good, but like I said, Overdrive is much more than a mouse driver and being PrefPane is only "one more thing". It's more Mac-way for me. How comes that Overdrive can, Microsoft driver can and I remember that even chinese A4-tech can do PrefPane to set options for mouse, but SteerMouse can't do it for so many years?

HAL0THANE  I started using USB Overdrive within a week of my first Mac, and I used to swear by it. But I don't swear by it anymore. You may think it is a prefpane, but if you look in Activity Monitor (or 'ps' output from Terminal), you'll see that USB Overdrive also runs an external app -- USBOverdriveHelper.app -- and that the prefpane doesn't do anything except show the helper app. Logitech Control Center and Microsoft Desktop do the same thing.

JC  Gratz! I'm looking for SteerMouse to support 10.6! It works great under 10.6.1 even under 64-bit kernel mode.

By default, users have to check "Automatic Moving" MANUALLY which is under Cursor setting. You can choose the button you want to your mouse move (immediately).

Thanks for the reliable developer! I am happy with the new SteerMouse w/ my Snow Leopard.

ROBOTANK  I'm assuming the developer's statement that SteerMouse works under Snow Leopard only in 32-bit mode refers to the 32- or 64-bit kernel, since it uses a kernel extension. For me, SteerMouse is working normally in all my applications, 32- or 64-bit, with the default 32-bit kernel. This isn't entirely clear from their post, but as long as you're not booting into a 64-bit kernel, SteerMouse should work fine.

MATREYA  I installed this yesterday, and already it's quitting and telling me the trial period is over.

I buy quite a bit of shareware, but I expect at least 2 weeks to evaluate it. Give me 1 day to look at Steermouse, and what I do is this: I uninstall it and write this review.

It's an utter disgrace that Logitech's own software won't recognize it's own products. That said, there aren't a great deal of choices for a good mouse.

I recently bought an MX Revolution and am very disappointed that I cannot use buttons 3-12 because they need special software. I used an MX-518 before this and all it's buttons were recognized by OS X without extra software.

I would have liked to test out Steermouse, but 1 day is not enough, and it's a shame the author is so keen to get a fee.

CHIEFTED  Still trying to get this to work with some of the buttons on my Logitech V470.

Most of the functionality does work but when assigning F keys to the middle button

it seems buggy (Expose in particular, when hiding all the windows to get to the desktop

the windows will stay hidden vice with Logitech's control center when I press the middle

button a second time it will reveal the windows).

Will still keep plugging away with this but for now I think this is average

MEDIAHOUND  This is a great mouse driver, much better than USB Overdrive! I'm using it under Leopard to drive my Logitech G5 mouse and it works fantastically. I can assign any button do do anything I want and I have full control over the cursor speed and sensitivity as well as scrolling speed.

MACD  Prepare to wait for your serial for ages!

The software is nice, but it would be even nicer if I you didn't have to wait for hours. Author doesn't have automatic serial number generation system in place. WTF? Are we still in 1990ths?? And there's a nice message which reads on thankyouverymuch for purchase - "Please contact us if you haven't received your serial in a week after payment. A WEEK?? Oh come on! Every single sharewave program I have bought in last several years had automatic serial numbers generation system (ie you get your number in seconds after you click the "charge my credit card" button). Plentycom doesn't bother spending a few hours setting up such a system (and yes, it's NOT hard to setup, at all - I've been doing it myself several years ago when I was in shareware business)

Still.. waiting.. for... serial..

DRDUL  I've started using SteerMouse because the Intellipoint software for my MS mouse is too buggy to tolerate any more. SteerMouse does the job nicely, but one thing is confusing me as I tweak the settings -- the difference between "tracking speed" and "sensitivity." Unfortunately, there's no useful explanation of these within the app or on the developer's web site. I'm trying to find a balance between precision for small movements of the mouse and fast speed for when I need to move the cursor a long distance. If anyone could provide some insight as to how these settings work, it would be appreciated!

DRDUL  To follow up on my earlier post, I contacted the developer who couldn't provide any more insight. After fiddling with it for a while, it appears that "tracking speed" determines how fast/much the cursor moves across the screen, while "sensitivity" determines how much the cursor moves in relation to the movement of the mouse.

I have set my tracking speed to the higher end of the range (1.5), and my sensitivity to the lower end (600). The result is that I can move the cursor from one side of my large monitor to the other without much mouse movement (higher tracking speed), yet I can still use the mouse accurately when doing detail work in Photoshop (lower sensitivity).

CMARKN  If you are going to use a $20 mouse, then you aren't going to expect it to do much and you don't need this program. If you use a multi-button mouse, especially one from Logitech, you are going to want all the buttons to work, and since the Logitech LCC driver is so unusable (don't bother even trying to set button functions for anything other than the default), then you need this driver. Now I get to pick whether the scroll wheel clicks or not, not the machine.

After the frustration of the included software, I'd consider this program cheap at twice the price.

RUSSELL GLEASON  I'm so tired of hearing people say "$20.00 is a lot of money for a program". You spent hundreds more than that on your own computer! And yet you'll spend $20.00 on a pizza without blinking an eye and that will give you what? a 1/2 hour of pleasure? Why not spend $20.00 on something that's going to last you (like a great software program). Steermouse works as advertised, and I have no problem paying for a program that fuctions as it should and makes my computing experince a shear joy. Especially when it comes to using a high end, high quality mouse that was designed "only for PC's", but will now "fully function" on my G4 Mac! To the developers of Steermouse, "Thank you"!

WAYNETOSH  I am stingy--e.g. I spent 20 hours designing and building a stand for my laptop b/c I didn't want to pay $35-50 for something "ready-made". That said, when I abandoned the one mouse button paradigm (settling, finally, after 3 other purchases, on a Logitech MX-610, which is great), I knew I needed something to customize my new tilt-wheel and 7 buttons. SteerMouse was the hands down winner in my driver comparisons, and when the trial expired, I suffered through about a week without it, and then, slowly drew out my credit card, b/c I realized I couldn't live without it (please assume and disregard hyperbole). It was painful, but I couldn't help myself and I now consider that $20 one of my best spent license fees. If you need something like this, then you need this. And if you think it's too much money, then, I argue, you don't really need it. I do, I'm stingy, and I think it's worth it.

P.S. I say all this in spite of the app's "Automatic Moving" feature, which in my opinion should be removed from the app--I agree with the others on the web who can't abide this unsolicited, pointer-moving tyranny. Incredibly, this UI anathema is enabled by default in the initial setup.

P.P.S. I use the applescript tip on the website to change the pointer speed/accel. for different mice, etc., and it works well with QS or the Script Menu.

GRYPHONENT  Nice app... though I’m annoyed it’s not truly a system preference pane. For $20 the app is almost as expensive as a mouse... and unfortunately doesn’t offer that much benefit compared to other drivers. For $10 this would be a no-brainer... but for $20, as has been said numerous times in this forum, SteerMouse is just too expensive. Another example of a developer pricing himself out of the market... shame.

JIMW  That is because you are using a mouse that is not designed to be used on a Mac. Logitech seems to make just one Bluetooth Mac friendly mouse. Actually their are relatively very few Bluetooh mice on the market. That is because the technology when used in mice is generally not as stable or reliable as other kinds of wireless mouse technology. I happen to have the only dedicated Bluetooh Trackball for Mac and frankly it was not worth the manufactures cost of its empty box. It sits in a drawer. I now use the 8 button cordless Trackman Trackball from Logitech and am quite happy with it and their included software. One reason I chose it is that historically I have found Logitech to offer passible to excellent customer and technical support for the Mac despite them being a Windows centric company. They also happen to be a major manufacturer to a significant number of other mice labels. So if I am going to buy a third party mouse, why not buy it from the company that probably made it in the first place? I believe that Logitech used to make Apple mice but I am not sure if they still do.

BEN JAMMIN™  Good software and I bought it because it enabled me to use a cordless Logitech mouse that does not otherwise have drivers on the Mac.

There are a couple things that annoy me about how buttons work Exposé, however. Maybe a workaround can be offered for these situations if the developer does not soon fix them:

I have my scroll wheel button set to Exposé all windows which it does, however only after I let up on the click. This makes using Exposé require two clicks to use rather than the one I used with a previous mouse: click once and hold while moving the mouse over the desired window and releasing to go to that window.

Also I have another button set to Exposé just my current application's windows, (in Steermouse it's set to replicate a Function key since I can't find another way to control Exposé thru Steermouse) but again, I can't hold down the mouse while I move it over the windows. If I do that, it just goes in and out, in and out of expose mode over and over.

FELDMM  Was looking for support of a bluetooth mouse [iogear]. Apple's bluetooth mouse recognition and drivers ok but wanted faster tracking and scrolling and wanted to use the clickwheel button as I saw fit.

Tried USB overdrive - no bluetooth support [the author writes that it is coming].

Tried Steermouse - it does everything well [bluetooth mouse support is excellent - support of my apple mightymouse on my other mac is excellent]

Paid the 20 bucks through paypal. Got the registration key quickly.

I give 5 stars for everthing except stability. I gave 4 stars for stability only because I've only been using it for a few days on my MacBook pro [without any problems - I may update my stability rating to 5 if it continues to function with my various new applications as well as it seems to be doing at this point]

My hats off to the author.

JOE D.  After emailing the author of USB OverDrive with regard to Razer Copperhead support, and receiving absolutely no reply, I discovered this product, which actually does support the Copperhead (albeit not the firmware option, but everything else works).

I'll be buying this product.

MBHOCKEY  Great software. I began searching for alternatives for USB Overdrive when it starting forgetting my tracking speed upon disconnecting/reconnecting my mouse.

It would also happens sometimes when logging out and back in.

Anyhow, SteerMouse is wonderful. I love its ease of assigning buttons, its reliability, and the ability to assign application specific commands for my buttons (Yes, i know USB Overdrive does this also).

However, most of all, i like its cursor speed/acceleration options. My mouse has never moved smoother, or more accurate.

Thank you for this software.

WILLOWMAC  This is a great mouse driver, I find it easier to setup than USB Overdrive, although both programs offer similar functionality. I won't knock USB Overdrive - it worked great for me, I just think this is a bit smarter looking.

But - here I am pondering over which new iMac to buy: G5 or Intel - Hot off the press, SteerMouse is now Universal. This will help make my decision.

CORPSECORPS  I don't see an advantage to this over the extremely versatile USB Overdrive, which customizes not only Mice, but various other gadgets on a per-app basis.

M. LUTHER  From what I have read, SteerMouse will control Bluetooth mice, which USB Overdrive will not. I've used USB Overdrive for years and love it. But I'll be switching to SteerMouse if I get a Bluetooth mouse that works with this software.

MU5TI  Then you obviously have not used this with a MIghty Mouse. Scrolling is much smoother, no, correction, scrolling IS smoother with this. Although USB Overdrive has more bells and whistles, scrolling is clunky.

DAVID CROW  I have the Microsoft Intellimouse for Bluetooth and I just got this program, and I'm finally able to have more specific commands assigned to the buttons 4 and 5.

This is a great program, and I'd advise it to anyone!

Nothin'.

ROBERT ENNIS  Yeah I can't use it. No help. Zero support. Nobody on any forum I can find knows anything. My G7 is being controlled by the Mac Mouse Drivers and that's it. Steermouse won't work. They don't respond to email and I have no idea how to get it to add my mouse.

BOB W.  Offers increased functionality, but I've had a LOT of mouse freezes when I drag and drop, while accidentally invoking expose. The Apple driver doesn't crash under that condition.

ANONYMOUS  I tried it with my M.Mouse and for some reason, within a couple of minutes I was unable to scroll downwards. I restarted again and then wasn't able to scroll downwards at all. There was even no click when using the downwards motion, yet there was in every other direction. Uninstalling SteerMouse and restarting (yet again) brought the mouse back to normal operation. OS X 10.4.2.

A shame, because it looked like SM had a good feature set. Maybe with v1.1.

ANONYMOUS  Yep, I agree. People are never happy. I've been evaluating USB OD for use with my Logitech MX1000 simply because the Logitech driver does not offer different button programability across applications. This driver does everthing USB OD does and a little more for exactly the same price. For example, USB OD and SteerMouse allows one to define the tilt wheel to left and right acceleration but unlike the Logitec and SteerMouse the USB OD driver fails to provide movement while the scroll wheel tilt is held in either direction, e.g., contineous left or right horizontal scrolling. USB OD forces one to continueous click

to move left or right horizontally. Adjusting the cursor tracking is a little bit harder than USB OD for some reason but once you learn how it's not that hard. I can't directly comment on Mighty Mouse support but it appears to improve on Apple's driver but I'll let others detail that. I would suggest the developer to support Kagi as an alternate means of payment. Other than that the driver is first class and

recommended.

FVDG  >Yet SteerMouse has all of the features of USB OD plus one or two that it doesn't have.

it seems so, BUT... you can set settings for DIFFERENT mice and or trackball (if you switch mice), Steermouse sets ONE setting for all mice and/or trackballs!

This gives USB O value for me

ANONYMOUS  Wow, people do complain. I think the valid point was made that USB Overdrive is $20, and indeed, I've never seen a complaint about that. I'm a licensed owner of USB OD, so I feel entitled to speak. I bought it because I just bought a Evoluent Vertical Mouse, and they specifically indicated that I needed to buy USB OD to use all the buttons on this mouse. Yet SteerMouse has all of the features of USB OD plus one or two that it doesn't have. I would have gladly paid the $20 for SteerMouse, had I known.

PRICE POINT ANYONE?  Ahhhhh..there is something referred to as "price point' and this is well above the realm of reality. Also, has anyone noted how it looks to be a great deal like the software that is shipped with Microsoft's mouse input devices?

ANONYMOUS  Give the guy a break, talented people writing software for Macs are rare so I suppose it's fare he charge a premium for his hard work. Would you rather he not write software for you VERY expensive Macintosh? Didn't think so. Can you write your own driver? No? Then STFU. Also, USB Overdrive is $20 and I don't see anyone complaining about that. (8/11/2005, Version: 2.0)

SAY WHAT?  $20? Man, I've seen it all. It is just a matter of time until Apple makes the majority of these features available. Let's see $20 plus $49 puts Apple quasi good multi-button mouse up to $69 (plus tax, if applicable).

ANONYMOUS  I've been trying this for a few hours, and it seems to work fine. Yes, you can assign functions to various buttons. Further, I'm using it on a Kensington mouse, and all works well. So it's not limited to Mighty Mouse. I also like the Cursor Action option, wherein you can assign a mouse button to move your cursor to a predetermined location; I would like, however, if one were not limited only to what's on the list of options.
