DENNY DOUBLEPLUS MARKETING  Since iRatchet has been updated, I do hope an update for MacFreelance (the exact same app, just a different name) comes out right away as well. There are some bugs with it - one in particular is when currencies are entered - they have to be entered up to 3 times for the decimal place to go in the correct place. *sigh*

CLEARNIGHT  I am looking for software to manage sales of actual product rather than billable time and am having trouble importing charges into projects, which makes this software basically useless to me. I would like to create files with product names, reference codes and prices that are then easily imported into a project. I need to build invoices for each client that bill only for product ordered rather for any services rendered and I haven't figured out how to do that easily so I am going to look elsewhere. I am, however, open to the idea that I am an idiot that has somehow missed these functions.

JMORGAN  I almost bought this today but no currency features for non-US kept me from it. i tried ibiz and timenet and both were pretty good. i got timenet and like it a lot since ibiz was a little slower and buggy

MISTERROGERS  Hey,

Actually, iRatchet has fairly robust support for multi-currency. You can assign a distinct currency to use for each client. iRatchet also supports web service rate conversion; checking web services for the current rate.

WIZZARD1  Not too sure where the negative to the developer and the applications has come from? I have went back and read all the reviews but I can find nothing that would evoke such negativity.

I have worked with the developer in the past and have been a beta tester of iRachet.

"Mister Rogers" has been nothing but professional in all the dealings that I have been part of. He has accepted my critiques and feature request with grace and expediency.

Anytime there has been an issue, the issue is fixed and a new build is released.

I use this software and it is hands above anything else out there for the price. I have the other software from the other vendors and they work well but I like the interface and the easy nature that iRatchet handles my business needs.

I firmly believe in reviews no matter how critical in nature but one must remember software is like art and it is one person's or one company's interpretation of a need - business or otherwise and it should be respected.

I am not too sure what expectations are being demanded but try the software and if it does not meet your needs than try and use somthing else; do not trash the developer because it is not what you want or like to see.

Please keep any nasty or slamming comments to yourself unless you can thoroughly justify your comments through fact and not fiction or personal conviction.

It is time to act like an adult, respond like an adult, and comment like an adult - not like the whiny kids that may come across in the reviews.

I pose a challenge to all you whiny folks - develope something better and go through all the processes necessary to put it out there like the develope has - maybe then the shoe will be on the other foot and maybe you will have some respect for another person's work.

MISTERROGERS  Hey Gryphonet,

Thanks for the good words. Small correction though; iRatchet does support multiple currencies. Go to 'Manage Clients', select a client, go to the Invoicing tab, and select the currency you want to use for that client. If you want to view projects/items with the currency set for their client, go into preference/general, and uncheck 'Use default currency code for all clients'.

GRYPHONENT  Well... no. The summary window showing profit loss will be totally out of whack. While I can raise an invoice with a different currency symbol (which is really good), the currency is not translated into the home currency. So, some 2,000 Euro and 2,000 dollars profit will show as 4,000 profit in the summary view... too good to be true, isn't it?

MISTERROGERS  Very true; currency conversion is not supported yet. To some, this is necessary, but to many, it is not. My point wasn't that I don't have more work to do, but that there is multi-currency support. Many users find that the current implementation meets their needs. Maybe a more accurate comment would be 'partial' multicurrency support :-)

Take care!

***..

GRYPHONENT  This is a great app... if you’re based in North America. Unfortunately, iRatchet still lacks multi-currency support for businesses who have to invoice in more than one currency. It’s invoice templates also look very American by nature and leave much to be wished for. If only iRatchet would sport the flashy templates and invoice/report customization features of Billings 2 or iBiz 3.

CELEBRITARIAN  Thank you for taking your time to jot down those sentences: I tried out iBiz a while ago but5 left it in order to work more with it another day. --> Will try the other application you mentioned, right now :)

I agree with you. iRatchet is a fine program for everybody in the U.S. This is a real shame, though - almost a bit sad - I felt that way the first time I tried iRatchet. Compared to other (both PC and Mac) solutions, this was a gorgeous app! In fact, I couldn't believe it back then.

if there was an international application about as nice as iRatchet, I'd by a couple of licenses without thinking about something else.

You are not a U.S. citizen? I come from Sweden and wouldn't buy it yet(?) - you're simply wasting your money, and more importantly, time, while you adapt to or tries to work with thiis...

I want an application that I can trust from the first second, that's as easy to use as iRatchet and looks about as good, too (both on screen and the final result, print or mail).

My biggest issue: I would want to know for sure that my solution was translated, and even more importantly, revised by someone from my country - someone who knows the laws, taxes...

A more realistic approach: The developer knows or learns the rules for other countries as well. (Incorporate in the product and well.. profit from your knwledge) :-)

I'm scared of writing something the wrong way, forgetting an important/tiny-and-unimportant-by-yet-required figure or phrase... I need to trust the tools I use - and I haven't had that feeling about iRatchet, a lot of it, but far from all the time, sadly enough.

I did my first couple of invoices in Google Spreadsheets [by then, barely beta], to be honest. (Now, don't laugh or question my seriousity for a second!) ;-) Of course, no names/companies or real services was mentioned. Saved it and exported it to OpenOffice (NeoOffice today, though):

In other words, my good-looking and correct invoices are made from a bunch of EXCEL documents... Limited to your templates, sure, but on a regular basis, sending an invoice takes a couple of minutes. However, my self-esteem when using a slow imitation of Microsoft's killer-app... Well, you get it :-)

ANYONE WHO NEEDS A TOOL LIKE iRATCHET.

Download it. Go, go. If you live in the U.S. everything should be _at least_ fine.

However, everyone not from the U.S. - of course it's usable: Make sure you're confident with iRatchet's feature, though.

—> If you have your own business and prefers Mac OS X, I can't find one single reason not to buy iRatchet, instantly.

COOLFACTOR  I was considering downloading this program, but the reactive comments from the developer turned me right on. Remember that people can be just as incompatible as software is. Don't let a few negative comments be a reason to post such personal judgments as "I think you're an arrogant idiot".

I'll look elsewhere.

HMURCHISON  This program is his labor of love. Feedback is certainly warranted but it must be constructive. Considering the experience of Jameskitty it would have been nice for us all to get suggestions about how the UI for iRatchet could be improved sans the accusatory prose. A little passion coming from the developer is actually pretty unique. I like that vigor myself.

THIRSTYROBOT  I took some time evaluating iRatchet and Billings and found them to be close on almost every measure that mattered to me (reporting ability, invoice customization, simplicity, and database reliability). In my case, Billings edged out a win--mainly on account of the pared-down simplicity of the app. Still, I have no doubt that there's a market for iRatchet's more detailed approach to quoting and invoicing. It's just not the right fit for my particular business.

JAMIE VAN DYKE  iRatchet is a great piece of software, it's mature and well thought out as well as driven on community feedback. I myself re-did the help files and the templated invoice layouts and can assure you that the developer puts in more effort in this application than could possibly be perceived by one who glances over it without giving it the full review that it deserves.

If you are looking for a small accounting application that is ideal for small firms, this is the application to get. The trial gives you ample time to decide if it's one you like too.

To give more detail about the direction of development, it's a simple matter of if the majority of users show a need/want for a feature, Mike will work hard to implement it. Give this a go, it's a great little app.

I've rated some of the features as a 4, but only because I know what's coming in later versions and that's what will get my 5 rating.

MISTERROGERS  JAMESKITTY, 1.59 went out yesterday (2 weeks after the last release). It had a critical bug that slipped by, so I fixed it quickly. Overall, my generally very happy customers really appreciate the fact that I quickly fix issues. If you want to critique my software, please try to be constructive instead just critical. Writing, publishing and maintaining your own software takes a significant amount of effort. The time/energy I put into iRatchet is far and above whatever profit I get out. If you want to send me a link to your software and I'll try and learn from it.

JAMESKITTY  so what you are saying is that USERS don't have useful feedback for your application and/or processes, only other DEVELOPERS do.

You might want to consider the difference between developer-centric application development and user-centric application development.

Maybe then you might understand how serious of a problem you're lack of interface design is.

And for the record, I've did QA & escalation support for the top PROFESSIONAL software development companies on the mac platform for nearly ten years. As a now freelance consultant, your application could potentially be of use to me in billing clients; however, with it's current interface it's all but unusable so I'm sticking with Accounts, instead.

MISTERROGERS  To be clear, I'm saying that YOUR feedback was not useful. You did not comment on features/functionality of iRatchet; you simply made an ignorant assumption about zero testing effort because a hot fix was needed. So we're done. I think you're an arrogant idiot, and you don't like my app. That's cool, you don't need to. Many others do, and you have options.

MINIMAL DESIGN  jameskitty, your comment makes no sense... No one's forcing you to update every .xx update... That's why version #s are for. If you HAVE to come to MacUpdate every day and HAVE to download every single little patch, that's you're problem/choice. If you don't feel like it, then download only every full # update or only .x updates.

What a pointless criticism.

JAMESKITTY  you know, being that their posting a .01 build every other day, you have to wonder if they are doing any testing at all.

personally, i'd much rather download a STABLE application once and have it work. i could understand major patches being rushed out, but series of small fixes should be rolled into one build that can be adequately tested.

if you are going to charge professional development prices, you need to meet professional development standards.

NULLSET  Terrific piece of software. I used to use iBiz, but this has it beat hands down. Not only that, but the developer is *great*. After a recent update I was having a problem with the new version. I emailed the developer on a Sunday night and he got back in touch with me within an hour. I didn't expect that kind of response time at all! Within an hour he had figured out the problem, and within a few hours he had a new build up. Great response, great software.

OSXFACTOR  1.47 has a conflict with SIMBL items and/or Input Manager items that was preventing it from launching. Removing these allowed iRatchet to launch for me. Putting them back after initial lauch was OK, too. Once iRatchet loaded for the first time, all was well.

APPLEMATT  D/l Demo app - Looks great - runs smooth.

All I want to do is Invoice a client - should be simple as its says on the tin.

Add my client through the address book clear add. Er Cant see a invoice button - Help Menu phew -

iRatchet is a new Tiger-only Invoicing and Billing application written in Objective-C/Cocoa. iRatchet provides the features and functionality common to billing and invoicing apps (tracking hourly and fixed entries, multiple clients/projects, timers, pdf output, emailing of invoices, etc.), it excels in workflow, mileage tracking, web integration and ease-of-use.

etc etc -- er where is INvoice client ??

iRatchet comes complete with integration to your AddressBook so all your current clients and contacts are available from your first use of iRatchet. No need to re-enter all those details, just pop open the AddressBook and boom!

Yes .... great

iRatchet is work flow based, meaning it's perfectly suited to follow common practises in daily financial tasks. Clients have projects, projects have line items, line items have prices. Each of these have different states they exist in, 'Open', 'Billed', 'Paid', 'Closed'...but what if you need to have a little flexibility, we're not all the same and some of us need something not quite the norm. With our flexible work flow choices, you can go in any direction you like, even backwards!

er INVOICE please......

If you need to keep track of your clients, or maybe just log all workflow events in a calendar, then we got you covered. iRatchet has the ability to automatically (or manually) add events to iCal and even remind you when bills are due!

....Now your having a Turkish (laugh)

I dont want to customize an invoice I want to create one ................ all you see in the help menu -

OK I have given up ! If I made Boats my aim for them would be to sail in the sea!

MISTERROGERS  Hmmm. That has to be the strangest comment I've ever seen :-) To preview and invoice, choose 'Preview Invoice'. To print an invoice, you guessed it, choose 'Print Invoice'. To save an invoice...

APPLEMATT  Well thanks for your best comment ever!

Just ran through your forum and yes your correct you do respond.

To give you total respect in which you deserve, I wish I found the forum but came back to macupdate where I downloaded the software, can see you have also re-coded after feedback.

I was informed from a very old mac-head who swears by it - I had problems, and thanks for your responce. But I dont wanna preview a invoice print one .... I want to create one, on my copy after going over the software I dont see anywhere that say's 'preview'.

Im knocking the software, ive not put much time into it to fully understand of course it works as a system as you would be puting a price tag and selling it as a accounting system. My point was that its looks great - I enter my client - ok Now I want to generate an invoice as I have done some work for that client - er where do I go ... I hope my points taken well as I know how hard it is to make software.

MISTERROGERS  Hey,

This is a language issue. You'll be hard pressed to find an easier app than iRatchet. I can get you successfully working with iRatchet in 3 min. or less; less time then it took to write your critical review :-)

Here are the steps:

1) Create a client (as many as you have).

2) Create a project for a client. In iRatchet (and most invoicing apps), you don't generate invoices for a client, you generate invoices for a project for a client.

3) Add project items (hourly or fixed price) that represent the work done for that project, for that client.

4) To generate an invoice, choose either Preview Invoice (to view the invoice before printing, saving or emailing), Print Invoice (to print directly), or email Invoice (to email directly).

That's it! Look, I'm glad you took the time to check out iRatchet. I just always have a hard time understanding why it's so much easier for people to negatively comment on an application, then to ask a question or two. If you tried to get answers and failed, I would understand, but no one has every sought help for iRatchet and not received it. If you decide to pursue iRatchet, jump over to the forum, and I'd be glad to help.

APPLEMATT  Thanks Mike for the step-through - Maybe in UK the accounts setup are not as you believe.

Im in the forum now - I post any other problems and I wil Purchase this software will it double now? - anyway its looking excellent now im in and can see the structures more clearly...thanks.

As a suggestion, video help is clearly the way forward - very easy to save How-to's on the Mac _ also saves time instead of making read me.

Apple makes use of it - and some Music companies use it to for you to quickly understand the make-up/layout of the interface more clearly and start using it.

Keep up the good work!

JUMP420  This is the **winner**!

After trying all of the project managers:

Studiometry - too much stuff

DayLite - not for me, its more of a planner

iBiz - buggy

youmehub - too techie

iRatchet - just perfect. iRatchet is as simple as can be but with everything that i need. The developer is very attentive and is working on it as we speak. I had a few concerns and he cleared them up within 12 hours.

Seem iRatchet has a future, at an affordable price, not like (cough) Studiometry (overpriced and no support)

THEMACJEDI  I spent several weeks looking for the right tool to handle my invoices. I tried at least 8 different apps because I wanted to move away from Quickbooks. I'm in the tech field and my invoices include time and fixed prices. This application nailed the feature set I wanted with a few features I didn't know I wanted until I had them.

If you need an invoicing and time management application that is rapidly developed and constantly improving I recommend you try the demo and see for yourself. I bought my copy before my demo ran out.

MINIMAL DESIGN  After trying out: Studiometry, Billings, MyTime, iBiz, OfficeTime, TimeLog, iTaskX, StudioBoss, and others I can't remember... I decided to buy this one.

Out of everything I tried, only iRatchet and Billings looked like true OS X apps and I was hesitating between the two. But once I visited the iRatchet forum and found out it's developed by only one passionate guy who's really into making the best Mac app of its kind, not a greedy condescending person like the studiometry people (just check how they reply to one customer who's upset about no upgrade price between v.1 to v.3 on this site to get an idea), I decided to support future development of this very promising program.

We definitely need more gifted and passionate independent developer like him for OS X, so I'd recommend you try this one out to see if it meets your business size/workflow. For a web/graphic designer, it's well adapted right now, and I'm sure it will be near perfect when it hits the 2.0 version.

MIKE ROSS  Hey Rob (and others who are facing this). At some earlier version, iRatchet was switched to a 10 day trial. You can easily reset this 10 day trial period, by deleting the 'iRatchet2.irdb' database located in '~/Library/Application Support/iRatchet' folder. Delete this file, then when you launch iRatchet, it will recreate the database, and reset your 10 day trial period. Or, feel free to purchase a serial and support iRatchet development.

ANONYMOUS  Anonymous poster; iRatchet gives you control over fonts settings for each section of an invoice. Check out the 'Preferences/Invoice' page. Here's the easy way to do it: Preview an invoice, bring up preferences/invoice, selection the section in the invoice page you wish to modify, press the 'Set...' button (which displays the font panel), make your changes, and the invoice will be updated live to reflect your changes. Also, iRatchet supports both global invoice numbering, and client invoice numbering, so you can have sequential invoice numbers either per client or globally.

There are still some small bugs in the program but all in all it is very easy to understand and to use. I would like to see the following in a future release:

- sequential numbering of projects

- a little more control over the invoice template (fonts)

WIZZARD  Excellent software both in terms of quality of design, functionality, ease of use, and performance. A clear winner. I have done beta testing for the developer and he is very helpful, knowledgable, and willing to take the time to put out a great product. Modifications and fixes are fulfilled in lightening speed. A must have product and priced competatively. Take care of your business/customers, download/test iRatchet, the purchase the product. This is only an initial release. KRISTOF STUYCK  iRatchet is one of those mac applications for which I trade my pc for a Mac. If you need a professional but easy to use interface (and adjustable invoice templates)with some power-features, iRatchet is by far the best choices! In my career, I've tried several invoice/time tracking software solutions, but this is the most comprehensive for my needs!

The support is even better, thx Mike! Glad I switched to mac...

MIKE ROSS  Just you ya know, eSellerate is working just fine now (I know you're anxious to use it). Also, support and comment email addresses are now up on my web site, and I do hope to hear both. Samuel's comments about localization and .mac are correct. Localization limitations will be addressed within a week, and stay tuned for v2 for some unique .mac integration.

SAMUEL VINCENT  it was the only solution to make observations on the software...

I think that it is very good software, I even think that it is still better than iWorks than I was going to buy.

good courage and continue has to develop it!

SAMUEL VINCENT  super software !!! very nice.

- purchase with isellerate doesn't work...

- there isn't web or/and mail adress of pretty good software to communicate.

- don't use the local parameters for date/time and currency.

- no real sync with .mac, only backup

good luck for the futur developments !

MIKE ROSS  Thanks again for the helpful feedback. The eSellerate purchase issue is fixed. You know I'm gonna address this first :-) This version is only localized for US/Dollar currency. The next release will address this issue. If this is a deal breaker, please check back later. Thanks!
