JSTRAIT  First off I'm using this to solve the simplification of a task that I used to have with my PC (recently moved to mac.)

I used to be able to shove my CF card in the reader (a convenient window would open - wish I could get that back too as I've optioned not to show my drives on my desktop, I've got lots of them and don't want the clutter.) After copying the files I'd delete them from the CF card and yank it out of the reader. Didn't have to empty the trash or eject it, very simple and quick.

So basically I want to combine the delete, empty trash and eject into one button, keystroke or icon.

This may sound quite trivial but if you're doing it constantly it can be quite annoying. I also don't like completely emptying the trash all the time in case I might need to recover something.

This product came close to doing this, it basically did everything it said. Well done! I was even able to drag the application icon to the finder window so it's always handy.

Now if it just did two other simple things it would be perfect. 1. Delete files that are dragged into it from removable drives (not send them to the trash or create a trashes file.) 2. Close it's window once complete. Also if possible create the option to always eject removable drives once cleaned.

That would be perfect.

JSTRAIT  The developers at "Compost" were kind enough to write me a program to do this.

Here's the script if anyones interested (just below text into script editor and save as an application.) (script is between the lines)

----------------------

on open inFiles

set theFirstFile to item 1 of inFiles

tell application "Finder" to set theVolume to the disk of theFirstFile

repeat with theFile in inFiles

set thePath to POSIX path of theFile

set theCommand to "rm -r " & quoted form of thePath

set theResult to do shell script theCommand

end repeat

tell application "Finder" to eject theVolume

end open

ANONYMOUS  Sloppy Programming!

- First of all, the requirements for this shouldn't be limitted to one OS X flavour, it's such a simple task that any Mac OS X could easily handle!!!

- Second, why in God's name was this compressed, you saved 190 BYTES and wasted time doing nothing virtualy! An Apple Disk Image contains only a data fork which is 'net friendly. I used DropDMG (2.74) and ended up with 120k file instead of 140!

Great idea for anyone that burn's non-Mac discs like DVD movies or Audio CD's and the rest.

JEFF H.  This app is written entirely with AS. If you think it should be done in obj-c, then by all means.... do it yourself.

There are security methods, as well as more simplistic ways of doing things, that are available in only the latest version of AS. For those reasons, and a few others, the latest version of AS is required... meaning you have to have 10.4.x.

That, and the custom dmg method allows for a background... which has installation instructions.... for people like you. Duh.. the background image has to take up space too... I guess you think 1+1=3. Please don't respond if you say yes, save us the effort.

JEFF H.  Please be aware that the fix for the find command has created a problem with the output information. With this version (1.2.3), only the .DS_Store files are being displayed/output on the 'Output' tab. The other files, '._*', and '.Trashes' are still being deleted, however.

This the does not affect people who use the 'Live-Dangerously' option.

Thanks for your patience in getting this resolved.

CROW  This is an excellent application for removing these files. I work as a webmaster in a mostly Windows environment. My users are not all computer-literate, and when they use Contribute to edit their sections of the site, they see a list of files - half of which are not "real" files to them. For every web page, there is a ._ equivalent, and they are listed first. My users open those, do not get their expected page, and then call me to tell me something is wrong. Or, they complain that they have to see these files. In addition, DS_Store files present something of a security issue on a webserver, in that they can contain info about the directory structure.

If you don't understand what this is for, or don't know why someone would use it - don't download it. At the very least, please keep unproductive opinions to yourself. It clutters up the reviews with unnecessary garbage. This application does what it is supposed to do, and there are people like me who appreciate it, and use it.

SECTION 8  why would you want to delete .DS_Store files anyways, who cares if it adds 1 lousy, tiny file to each directory. BIG DEAL! The .DS_Store file stores window settings like icon size etc. for your mac, so why would you want to delete it if you are going to be using the drive again? And if your not, why do you care anyways...??

PC users are used to seeing random files all over the place, and even if one happens not to, i think they can deal with it. I mean, GUI front-ends for terminal commands are great, but I really don't understand all the flaming going on in these comments.

TNH  As usual this DS_Store remover is a useful GUI for anyone using devices that at some point choke on .DS_Store files. Deleting files beginning w/ a . isn't as important to me as files beginning with ._ (same filename as another file since these are metadata). It would be great to have it work on specific drives.

So here's the score (since I have devices that choke on .DS_Store files and metadata ones):

In order of things that cause problems:

1) .DS_Store

2) ._filename

Then the things that could be nice

3) Thumbnails/Previews. A lot of things won't use the embedded thumbnails or previews so you can reduce 20 megs of files to about 16 megs just stripping these q/ quickimage or something like that.

Sure, I fix the problem causers in the terminal; but that doesn't mean I like wasting my time doing it. This a useful application and it's not based on paranoia, but messages like 'the movie could not be deleted' on a psp or whatever.

ANONYMOUS  To the previous two posters...

So, everytime I copy files to my PSP or mobile phone and the Mac OS copies loads of additional hidden files my PSP and mobile phone don't need, or understand, you think I should fire up the Terminal app, type in a bunch of geek-code I don't understand (risking making a mistake and doing something dangerous) instead of just double-clicking this apps icon and clicking "Clean Now"?

Two clicks versus multiple clicks and typing multiple characters into the potentially dangerous Terminal?

Sounds like some people just like making life hard for themselves. Perhaps you'd be better off using Windows and DOS!! Geeks!

ANONYMOUS  For goodness' sake, this can't be said too often:

MAC USERS NEED TO GET A GRIP.

No wonder Windows users laugh at them. (I'll say nothing about the Unix guys.) OK, it is a smart move to buy a machine with OS X and get on the other side of the fence, but if you pay up for stuff that merely does what you could do for yourself in Terminal you just admit that you are an example of the proverbial clueless "Maccie".

Quote:

"Optionally can be set to delete all files that start with a period."

Extremely unwise. do you know what files you'll be deleting? No? OK, then don't.

Quote:

"Automatically scans folders to remove the following files: .DS_Store, ._*, .Trashes."

Trashes? WTF?

.DS-Store. Oh, OK ... I'm sick of this already. Apple shouldn't be dropping these files on the hard disk in the first place, but it's not a big deal. They do no harm. If you want them gone, don't use this and don't use the other program some equally clueless person below mentions. Open Terminal. You'll find it in "Utilities", which is in "Applications". Type this:

sudo find / -name \.DS_Store -exec rm -f {} \;

Oh, while you're there, you could do this, too:

sudo find / -name \.localized -exec rm -f {} \;

There. Not so hard was it? Not even for a Maccie. Put your wallet back in your pocket and go and buy a drink with the money you saved.

ANONYMOUS  Okay, I'm confused now. How much money can you save by not buying a free product?

.DS_Store files don't really bother me, but they *are* annoying when I'm trying to transfer files via my friend's USB drive, since they clutter up his drive and I don't expect non-Mac users to understand why random non-related files are being included.

I might try out this application, for convenience's sake, if nothing else :P

It's a good thing that deleting all hidden files is just an *option* though. I'd rather not think about how much havoc it could wreak if you tried to delete all hidden files from your system...

SEAGULL  That's the other thing about Maccies.

They're not only ignorant and swim in their ignorance.

They're obnoxiously belligerent too.

Some say this type of belligerence is the nadir of stupidity.

Judging by the reactions here, one would have to concede they're right.

Of course you could go out and learn something instead of being so proud over and over of your embarrassing ignorance - and it's not exactly like he's asking a lot, especially when he GAVE you all the 'code' you need...

But that would just go against the grain, wouldn't it?

It becomes apparent after a while why the Apple platform is in the margins:

No one wants to socialise with the likes of you outcasts.

Try to learn something for a change instead of being so incredibly lame.

No, there is nothing wrong with this guy giving away a free app, but yes, there is something VERY wrong with you people, nearly nine years down the line since the merger, still clinging to the past and whining and whimpering and drooling all over the place.

You really thing you're something? Then show people by being constructive instead of snotty like pre-teens.

There is nothing wrong with this app. It is a waste, true, and it is VERY dangerous, true again, but you read the disclaimer, didn't you?

What's wrong with this app is YOU.

Again, for support for this app. the email is support@hackit98.com.

To take screenshots of the errors:

1. press 'command+shift+4'

2. When you get the crosshair icon, press the 'spacebar'

That will let you click on a window to take a picture of it.

Lots, and I mean lots, of people have reported zero errors from using the app. So unless I am informed of these supposed errors, they may never get fixed.

That, and I found it to be a very clunky app. Where is the interface, and the ability to set additional options?

And if by, "delete the drive", you mean eject the drive... yes this app will do that. See the Help menu for more info on how to do that.

The purpose of this app is not to delete files just because. Its purpose is to delete files off of drives that do not need to have the extra info.

For instance, it can be critical to squeeze every bit out of removable media. So removing all of the unnecessary files created, is a wanted feature.

JEFF H.  That only gets rid of the .DS_Store files. It does not delete the rest of them, namely the .Trashes folder and resource files.

By the way, this tip has been listed in the help file for my app since 1.0 by giving a link to the article on MacOSXHints.com.

I did that, because as a computer doctor, it's better to treat the cause instead of the symptom ;)

So I agree with the tip, it just doesn't solve everything.

SEAGULL  Jeff:

Who cares what it does and does not get rid of?

And how, pray tell, are you accessing directories off limits? Are you asking for passwords?

That you then pass on the command line? For rogue processes to pick up?

Why don't you just write a script that picks up all the hits for ANYTHING anyone wants to get at and uses them in an xargs deal? So they can even purge or remove interactively?

Instead of this cruft?

SJK  To anyone considering swallowing the pompous Anonymous koolaid below, here are a couple things you might want to know:

Running any "sudo find / ..." command will attempt to traverse *every* directory of *every* volume on your system as the root (fully privileged admin) user. That alone can be reason enough not to risk running it unless you really understand it. The general recommendation is to be careful running any command prefixed with "sudo".

Using Anonymous's example, every .DS_Store that can be deleted will be deleted, which may have unwanted side effects (e.g. all Finder comments removed). And it's often not the best idea to run find commands over network volumes.

If you want to do this, I suggest first running a command like "sudo find / -type f -name .DS_Store" to search for and list the .DS_Store files before running the command to delete them.

SEAGULL  This is mostly bollocks.

Anyone with half a brain knows it.

ANONYMOUS  And if Hackit has left you out of their plans because you haven't swallowed the Tiger koolaid yet, paste the following into your terminal window:

echo -n 'CLIX cleaning .DS_Store files... ';sudo find / -name \.DS_Store -exec rm -f {} \;;echo done.

Or just download CLIX, instead of accumulating several handfuls of applications like this one.

JEFF H.  Rob:

It depends on the settings. By default it runs a simple shell script of "find " & SlashedDir & " -name '._*' -o -name '.Trashes' -o -name '.DS_Store' -exec rm '{}' \\; -print".

You can optionally set it to delete all files that start with a period.

Anonymous:

As for CLIX, it does look like a decent program... but it appears to complicated for the majority of people out there. That, and I couldn't find anywhere in the app, or on the site, that enables you to automatically run the commands every.. say 5 minutes.

Yes, you can setup Cron jobs to do exactly what this program does, but why go through setting up a cron job every single time you want to simply erase some files off of... say a memory stick.

This app simplifies erasing the files, and automatically erasing them every given number of minutes.
