PENGUIRL  I came back to Vienna after NetNewsWire switched their synching from NewsGator to Google and raised the system requirements to 10.5. It has a nice UI, good functionality, and it's the only RSS/Atom reader I've tried that imported my feeds in the same folder hierarchy that they were exported in. So far my only complaints are font related, increasing the size of the article headlines font causes the date and time to be cut off by the headline below it, and there is no font settings for the article summary or the full articles. The only way to make them larger is to force all fonts to a larger minimum size, thus bringing up the previously mentioned issue.

At this time I don't need synchronization but it would be a nice feature to have for the future. All in all Vienna is the best of it's class.

ITISTODAY  - Builtin tabbed web browser!

- Fast!

- Support for folders and nested folders!

- Email-like view to show article titles from either a feed, or a group of feeds!

- Open source!

- Smart folders!

- Easy flagging!

What's not to like?? This is the best news reader I've come across, bar none.

CMASON  I just heard that netnewswire was going ad-supported (ironically, it was their own beta update message that mentioned this.) I used to use netnewswire lite and was happy with it and never really needed the "pro" version. I got it anyway once they made it free but never really used any of the advanced features.

I tried newsfire and it looked nice, but didn't have the same 3-pane view I was used to.

So, then I found Vienna. It works great! I loaded up my subscriptions, changed a couple fonts, and that's it. It is doing exactly what I want with a simple interface that looks almost the same as netnewswire. Most importantly, *no ads*! Well done.

STUGOTS  I switched to this from NetNewsWire, after the NNW Beta update nuked most of my subscriptions.

I find Vienna to be very stable, with a cleaner UI than what I've been used to with NetNewsWire. There's a better use of real estate. The overall visual design looks far more polished than what you usually find in an open-source project.

The default fonts are OK but there are better choices, IMHO. They are easy to change in the preferences.

The only feature I miss is synchronization with a service out on the web, so I can share my feeds between work and home. (*Not* Google Reader, TYVM.) From what I gather in the support forum, synchronization is one of the new features being considered.

ROB.H  Ticks all the right boxes for me.

Now that NetNewsWire is going commercial/ad-supported, Vienna is a great free alternative. Clean uncluttered interface (with some interesting visual styles to choose from if you like that sort of thing) plus it's easy and intuitive to use.

The only thing missing really is the sync features of NetNewsWire, but then I'm trying to ween myself off hours of reading newsfeeds every day on every device I own, so that's probably a good thing!

JOSHEWAH  I like this app a lot. I wish that flash and audio/video wouldn't reload every time I switched tabs though. If I am checking out a song from a blog in a tab and go back to read feeds while it plays it cuts it off and starts downloading again when I go back to it.

IVANOVITCH  A timely update: it was unusable with Remote Buddy open at the same time (made Vienna uncontrollable, oddly). Further, the display bugs introduced with Leopard now appear to be ironed out. No more truncated scrollbars or icons.

What's missing:

Still no icon to indicate that a headline has been opened in external browser: only option is to display read/unread and to manually flag item.

Also difficult to re-sort headlines by date (up or down) without doubling size of pane used for headlines (I use condensed layout to emulate previously purchased RSS readers).

Apart from this, it works remarkably well, and the price is brilliant value. Like others, I bought other readers but grew disappointed with the direction of development and features. I'm now happily stuck with Vienna.

TINGTING  Needs more toolbar button options like "mark all read" "refresh" just a single feed. And not a drop down menu like it has where you get carpal tunnel click-scroll-click. One click. otherwise cool, I hope it grows in the right direction.

SCREENSHOT  I just started to use Vienna and the functionalities are quite ok. But could someone explain to me why Vienna connects to sites such as imrworldwide.com, doubleclick.net, metrics.apple.com, webtrendslive.com, tacoda.net, revsci.net and others?

I don't remember adding any feeds from those guys.

ZX81  I hate Vienna!

I bought NetNewsWire and Newsfire and discovered Vienna afterwards!!! Now I don't use the readers I have bought anymore and I've swithched to the free one...It's fast, easy to configure and use, can import and export my list of suscriptions (I exported it to OmniOutliner). The builtin browser is just great and seems to be able to open any Web page and download files (which isn't the case of NetNewsWire ; I've tested quite a few pages).

Very stable. Great app.

GATTON  I don't have a lot of experience with other feed readers but Vienna works very well for me. As a matter of fact I consider it a plus that I was able to set it up and begin using it so quickly having no experience with other standalone readers. The only other thing I have used is Google Reader. I'm very pleased with Vienna's features and performance. Worth a download for sure.

PMANNA  While it looks it gets better, it still lacks the only feature that keeps me from switching, i.e. the possibility to subscribe multiple times to the same feed with different user names. That's the way some popular feeds work (GMail, for example), and it's supported in other readers.

GAOSHAN  This has come so far from the first version I used (probably a year or more ago). I have always used Safari's built-in RSS feed reader but one day with Vienna and I switched.

Probably my favorite thing about it (and the reason I like it better than other free, standout RSS readers, such as NetNewsWire Lite) is the built-in browser for viewing articles. There is a basic web browser with back, forward, refresh and since it is based on webkit it functions and feels very much like a stripped down Safari.

Additionally you can send a link to Safari for viewing, if you like. Another thing that beats Safari's RSS reader is the ability to check individual feeds for updates rather than the whole collection.

There are also a number of built-in css styles that you can apply to your feeds, you can flag articles, use smart folders, etc. All of this for free! What a great product!

TIMSTRINGER  I've been using Vienna to manage about 50 RSS feeds. I'm very impressed with the application, though I was finding that it was getting slower and slower to the point where it was almost unusable (e.g. it would sometimes take about 10 seconds for a news item to show up on my MacBook Pro).

The solution: I simply empied the Trash by selecting "Empty Trash" from the Vienna menu. From what I've read, this causes some sort of a compaction of the database to be performed which can dramatically improve performance.

Anyway, it worked like a charm. Vienna is now dramatically faster and my search for a replacement is over. I hope others find this tip useful!

ANTHONY SIGALAS  I was a hardcore NewsFire user, but due to the developer's arrogance I was forced to seek another RSS reader. I had my eyes fixed on Vienna for a long time, but the newest version introduced Unified layout which is absolutely brilliant. This feature, together with the ability to change styles (CSS templates really) made me a Vienna believer. A big thanks to the devs for bringing to maturity a great open source RSS reader!

GRUMPYTICO  I really like this RSS reader, so I feel kinda bad saying something not good about it :(

I have 46 RSS subscriptions and when marking all messages as read and moving on, it becomes Beachball land in Vienna. CPU usage is around 10% when this happens (I'm using a MBP), I have to switch and do other things while Vienna can come to its senses - which can sometimes take up to a minute :(

Overall, excellent RSS reader with a problem that at least for me, makes it unusable.

WALKI-TALKI.COM  Ignore the old comments below about Vienna being slow. This WAS true. Since may, Vienna has undergone considerable revisions, and it is quite fast. I have hundreds of feeds, and sometimes I have THOUSANDS of articles loaded. There is not even a hiccup on my old 867 MHz PB, and Vienna is blazing fast.

The only feature missing from Vienna is a feed discovery feature whereby you enter a URL and the reader discovers all the feeds that are offered by that site. This is hardly a problem, however, since Vienna offers so many wonderful ways to organize and display the feeds.

Toward the latter, Vienna offers a very nice selection of themes that make reading articles a joy, frankly.

This is THE reader for OS X.

KILLERHAMSTER  Vienna is a very nice News Reader, and its features are enough for me. the only thing that bothers me so much that I finally switched to NNWL is that it is soooo darn slow. I already keep my items only for a day or so, and I have only about 30 feedss, but it takes Vienna forever to switch between feeds etc. Nothing like this with NNW.

Should this problem be resolved, I'd gladly switch back.

RENDERHEAD  I highly recommend this newsreader! It is without a doubt the finest free newsreader I have tried.

While it does not have quite as many features as some of the paid newsreaders like NetNewsWire, it has a few more features than the stripped-down NetNewsWire Light. Unlike NetNewsWire Lite, however, it is open source and frequently updated. I predict that it will soon be competitive with the paid version.

I've relied on it heavily for several months now to read about 40 feeds, and I have had fewer crashes in Vienna than I have in any of my web browsers. The most persistent problem it has given me is that the titles on some feeds are improperly rendered. This only happens with one of my feeds, and I suspect that it is due to improper formatting on the feed maintainer's part. Still, NNW Lite is able to display them properly.

HAL2007  Very nice RSS reader, it's customizable and - best of all - it's free and regularly updated.

However, it's one of those apps which rely on an active font "Helvetica", and crash if it's not present. Took me a while to figure that out.

Aside from that it's great. Keep up the good work!

BERNDII  Very nice app, works better for me than any of the other readers and it's free with source.

One little feature request, it would be nice to adjust news to when they turn old news. So when I don't click an item it turns old after a while w/o clicking on it. I sometimes have so many feeds that I don't read and I always have to manually mark them as read.

RYAN H.   This is an awesome RSS client with a sweet price! I have been using this FREE client for months and its excellent. You get tons of great features that you just simply won't find in other anemic free clients. Sure it hasn't got every imaginable feature that other super expensive (IMHO. why would anyone pay $20+ for a RSS client?) but it has some really cool features and is definitely worth a looksey if you haven't used it before. However, some of my fellow reviewers do make some excellent points and I hope that the developer will take them into consideration in the future.

P.S Its really cool (and fun!) that its also themeable!

THEBRIX  Brilliant. I am a registered user of both Shrook and NetNewsWire (and have wavered between the two over the past couple of years) but Vienna trumps both of them. The author has realised that the point of a RSS reader is to read news and developed the user interface accordingly. Fast, full keyboard operation, no toolbar, no popups, no "statistics" or other irrelevancies getting in the way of feeds, preview and full article - and the tabbed opening of linked Web pages behind the two right-hand panes is an excellent idea.

At last, an RSS newsreader which feels comfortable on a 12" screen!

RBGAMER  This does not beat NewsFire "hands down" - that's an exaggeration - but I have switched to Vienna for now. As a paid user of NewsFire for over a year, I have two reasons for switching to Vienna. First and foremost, Newsfire is increasingly sluggish and takes forever to start up. Vienna with all my feeds imported from NewsFire takes a tenth of the time.

Second, I like the ability to open tabbed web pages within the reader (something NewsFire lacks). I would say that Vienna's interface is very good as well, not as good as NewsFire's but good enough for me not to particularly miss NewsFire.

One thing I do miss from NewsFire? Weblog integration. If this were added to Vienna I would have no need to return to NewsFire.

ANONYMOUS  Looks like a really good app.

I tried NetNewswire Lite and Netnewswire before.

The Lie version was missing features. The Pro version had too many features.

Vienna was exactly what I was looking for.

Only problem I have is that its a bit buggy and that you set the feeds to delete after a certain amount of time.

EJI  I've been using Vienna for a few days now, and I have to say it's the only client that comes the closest to being between NewsFire (my preferred GUI) and NetNewsWire Lite (my preferred feature set).

Pluses:

- Growl support

- Fully customizable three-pane view

- Smart folders

- Flagged items

- Open source and gratis

Bugs:

- No way to set an expiration date for headlines. They just keep accumulating, though there is a "Compact Database" option

- Date sorting isn't always accurate

- Takes extra clicks to mark messages read

- Some feed [fav]icons displayed incorrectly

What I'd like to see:

- Podcast support

- A bit more deafult spacing between feeds or alternating lines -- very cramped at the moment

- Abitlity to open links in background

- Bonjour support

- Pool of included feeds (like NNWL)

- More options and customization for individual feeds

- More view styles

- A better icon. That wavy V is fugly

All in all, it's a great start. As an experiment of sorts, I removed NNWL from my dock when I installed Vienna and haven't returned to NNWL since.
