SONICDEVIANT Forget all the negative reviews listed below. These folks either have unstable systems or, more likely, they don't know what they're doing. Yes, you can hurt your system, so if you're clueless about the underpinnings of the Dock and Spotlight (and other settings this utility affects), use the app at your own peril. Treat it like a simplified Terminal shell...you can do MORE damage in the Terminal than with this app if you're unedu-mac-ated. (Version 1.3)

M2ATMAC this is a very nice tool. tiger tamer gave me the ability to easily change some hidden tiger settings which were responsible for low system performance. however, if you are one of those who doesn't care about reading documentation simply do not run this app. although you'll find some useful information hitting the pink question mark button, some settings are not well documented. nothing you can't find more about googling it. all in all, this is a two thumbs up app for experienced users. thanks a lot for the time and effort that the developer has put on this tool. MIKEKIRBY This hammer sucks. I brought it home and started hitting things with it, and it wrecked my house! Folks: software is a TOOL. You have to know how to use it or you're just going to break things... that's not the software's fault, it's yours. This is not a program for newbies. Yes, it will happily allow you to hose your system if you're not careful. That's because it works very well. So if you don't know exactly how to use it, DON'T. On the other hand, if you've been looking for access to the system options that it offers, and have the understanding to use it properly and with caution, you'll probably find, as I did, that it works exactly as advertised. I found it very handy. Nice freeware. (Version 1.3)

BRANDON At first glance, I thought Tiger Tamer would be pretty useless to me. After fooling around with some of the settings, I found it to be exactly the opposite! Wow, Spotlight is finally usable for me! Speed is greatly increased, I was really disappointed before. (Version 1.3)

LEO OF BORG Funny. None of what the other reviewers wrote has happened to my machines. Unlike some other -free- apps, this one does what it says -- and is the perfect thing if you happen to be running a Tiger Server [who needs Spotlight and Dashboard running on a -Server-]?? All this guy goes is set flags and kill services. Example; if your SystemUI Server doesn't start right back up [and your MenuExtras, that Apple does not support] don't either, then you need to look to other problems on your machines. I have tried -other- AS Studio type apps that have done far worse to my machines than this one [like NOT setting the right permissions on the /etc/hosts file]. (Version 1.2)

ANONYMOUS Just to counter all the negative criticism below, I have found this program to be stable and good at what it does. I have used it to disable all animations and dashboard on my G3 PowerBook. I suggest those people who are having problems with this program had their system in an unstable state before using it. (Version 1.2)

~FLIPPER I installed this little app, for one reason: the 'Cut' feature. It moves the 'cut' item to trash, sends the item to the Clipboard, but the tiger OS, even though it will show the item on the Clipboard, won't enable 'paste'... what a shame. (Tiger 10.4.2) Otherwise, it's a nice deal. Apple should have had the "cut" feature many years ago.... (Version 1.2)

ANONYMOUS The cut feature, and its bugs, are in the Finder. Tamer just enables them. The problem with cut on a file is that if you cut/copy something else the file is lost. I assume that is why apple never made it a feature. And because it is not a supported feature it was not well tested and may be buggy. I used it before tiger without problems. Most of the things tamer lets you set are like that. Fun, maybe useful, but not well tested and often buggy. (Version 1.2)

NIMBUS3 MenuExtra/Spotlight glitch can be solved by deleting systemuiserver plist from your user home's preferences folder and then restarting systemuiserver. You have to re-register all those MenuExtras that you want to keep on the menubar though. $ rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist;sudo killall SystemUIServer Then in the Finder, Cmd+Shift+G and type "/System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/" (or in the Terminal, $ cd /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu\ Extras/), then launch whichever Menu Extras you want. Note, if you want to have the KeychainAccess MenuExtra, it's not in there. Launch Keychain Access.app in the /Applications/Utilities and then check the preference for it.

NIMBUS3 This app killed all my Apple genuine MenuExtras. They simply vanished from MenuBar and cannot be brought back although ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist does indeed still list all those MenuExtras (thus, they should be shown on the Menu Bar). Hovering over Spotlight icon at the far right on the Menu Bar gives me a rainbow cursor, making Spotlight unusable. Reading other persons' comments/replies here, there are other people suffering from the same symptoms. Command+Option+Comma suggested by the developer did not help. The developer implies that we need a root level password to rectify this, but without giving any detailed info for the solution whatsoever. Visiting the Developer site reveals no contact information. Pitty. Sigh... (Version 1.1)

ANONYMOUS command-option-comma (Clear Defaults in Tiger Tamer menu when option key is down) will unset all defaults, restoring the system to normal. The Disable checkboxes in the spotlight tab, and lock login items, are not defaults. Click the little ? in the top right for more details about what things do. (Version 1.1)

MARK Yikes! My little brother downloaded this and managed to screw up my system. He did somthing under the finder tab and now spotlight is broken and all of the icons in my system bar are gone. Does anyone know how to contact the developer so I can find out what kinds of things were modified there and see if I can hack it back together? He remembers playing around with the finder tab to "tweak my powerbook" but nothing else :( mark.macupdate@sparktography.com (Version 1.1)

NIMBUS3 I second that. My MenuExtras are all gone and relaunching SystemUIServer does not load any MenuExtras (Apple genuine). Spotlight is also halted with rainbow cursor when mouse pointer hovers over at the spotlight icon far right in the menu bar. Other user accounts are not affected, though. (Version 1.1)

MATT None of the suggestions here have worked and I have similar problems after using Tiger Tamer. Finder menu on the app is non selectable. Spotlight and clock in menu bar are simply gone. How do I "restore spotlight" per the developer. Are there any other suggestions for resolving this? (Version 1.1)
| Jun 22 2005 |
MATT Well, I checkedthe dev site and while command-option-comma did not work, the command while in the Tiger Tamer menu did work to reset the default. I could then get into the finder menu in Tiger Tamer and reset the UIServer and viola, the clock and spotlight were restored. Not sure how software that seems to have such serious flaws could be released, but it is safe to say its no longer running on my system... (Version 1.1)

ANONYMOUS What makes it dangerous is lack of "Apply" and "Restore default OSX settings" functions. Seems that one you launch the app it applies it's own defaults and there is no way of restoring system to default settings, unless you know for sure what this little app changed. Dangerous is a very polite description. (Version 1.1)
