X3L  43 dollars is way to much for this app. I have secretbook, and ill stick with it.. And to comment on the previous statements from the developer, free updates for life means very little. Repeating it still dont make me wanna pay for it. When u say that the price for the app is set that high as a result of said "lifetime updates" you just admit that you could have sold it for 10 dollars and let people pay for the updates. Check out the other developers on macupdate. Many of them has simply stopped developing their apps further. We have no guarantee that u will keep developing this app for the next 5-10 years. I actually find it very unlikely.

15-20 dollars and ill consider it. 43 ? then your competition have yet another customer...

AMBERV  Buyer beware!

These developers bought out SecretBook to develop this application, which is largely just a UI update. They tout such features as "sheets" as being modernised and improved. Further, they are refusing to support existing customers of SecretBook. My support request was very simple and probably would have taken a few minutes to address, but instead their response was simply: "We only help customers".

Any business that neglects a vital aspect (customer list) of what they have purchased is probably not safe to trust for other aspects of their business as well.

I wouldn't go anywhere near this company for any of their software.

VELGOR242  Not liking the new version. As a data application, I want to be in and out as quickly as possible. The cube animation is just a waste of CPU cycles. Also there are some glaring usability issues: the giant icons have to go--not all of us are running 27" iMacs. Also, the app still can't seem to remember how wide I want the sidebar to be.

XENOPHILE  Nice, but...

Big league price without the big league features, and a developer with a relatively short track record.

For less than half the price, check out info.xhead for a serious encrypted database app. For $3 less, check out 1Password, which transparently integrates with all web browsers to automatically save and send any and all login info. 1Password's developers issue rapid-fire updates to keep their app working seamlessly with all Mac web browsers, and their customer service is highly professional, in contrast to that exhibited by the SecretBox developer in this comments section.

NEOX  $43.00? Really? That seems quite steep for this app. I bought SecretBook 3.x and 4.x when it was like $12 or something. I see nothing in this app that is worth $30 more. In fact as a SecretBook 4.x user, I have to buy it again to get this new "improved" version. Sorry, but I liked it when Jason was still developing. I don't like app4macs high prices. There are better alternatives like Koingo SW data guardian, which has a ton more features: http://www.koingosw.com/products/dataguardian.php

APP4MACSUPPORT  This is not a fair comment as a license is for lifetime (you pay only one time in your all life). Plus the dollar is actually very very low and our price are based in Eurios.

NEOX  @Dev

It's not a fair comment? It's my opinion that it isn't a great price. What's not fair about that? The value of the dollar isn't an excuse for the price. I am just simply stating my opinion that if you lowered the price to $20, which seems to be the "fair" price for this type of app, you may get a lot more people buying it. If you offered some kind of reasonable upgrade price for previous secretbook owners, again, you might get a lot more sales. Other companies are adjusting their price because of the poor exchange rate. Why not try that? Last I checked there were quite a few Mac users in the US...

APP4MACSUPPORT  You forget that it's a license for LIFETIME. So you pay only one time. Other competitors charge for updates. So you cannot compare the price. We cannot also make an exception on the price just because the dollar is going very low (historic low level). Imagine the nightmare of developers: adjusting prices because of the level of a currency. We are running a promo until end of the week. 30% off with the coupon code HALLOWEEN. It's already a good deal and this is the kind of things we do to help american customers.

NEOX  @Dev - While lifetime upgrades is nice, my experience with this is that most developers that have offered this in the past usually retract it at some point and start charging for updates. So I am always skeptical of this. That doesn't change the fact that I still feel the price is too high. I think you are the highest one on here for this type of app. How are other developers selling for $20, despite the exchange rate? Sorry but I don't buy your excuses and my opinion is not changing because it is lifetime upgrades. Further instead of acknowledging that it is indeed a high price for US customers, regardless of what the reason, you just argue and offer the old "we cannot adjust prices for region" excuse. Sorry that doesn't fly with me, you can adjust it for the US market if you wanted to, it is not that difficult really.

APP4MACSUPPORT  Again you compare prices in the wrong way. Since 2004 (so now 5 years), we never charged for upgrade/update. As an example, take a product purchased in 2004 at $40. It's $8 per year! Sorry, but our customers really love this policy! We can offer temporary discounts when a currency is very low to help customers but we cannot adapt a price in real time based on the level of a currency. Nobody do that in the all world.

Oct 28 2009

NEOX  @Dev -

I think you misunderstand. I do not expect any developer or company to adjust their price in real-time for a given currency. But you can SET a price for a currency regardless of the exchange rate. And you keep saying I don't understand about lifetime updates and that I can't compare it to other apps that charge for upgrades. Well I can. As I said, lifetime updates are a nice thing, but it does not change the fact that I feel the price of admission is too high. To put it another way, if I want to use data guardian I have to pay $19.95. If I want to use your software I have to pay $43.00. Granted your software comes with free upgrades, I still have to pay that amount just to use it. Some people don't always upgrade their software just because a new version comes out, so you cannot assume that everyone just rushes to buy a new version. I am still using an iPhoto from a previous version. I haven't felt the need to upgrade. Look, I think we can agree that we are not going to agree. I shared my opinion on the price, and you don't like that or agree. That is fine and up to you. You have to be expected to get a little criticism now and then don't you? My intentions were not just to randomly complain, but just to voice my opinion, as a SecretBook owner that I don't agree with your pricing structure. No worries, my SecretBook 4.x version works just fine. I feel no need to upgrade...

APP4MACSUPPORT  Ok, we got it. The entrance price level. Interesting point of view. You care more about the entry level than other advantages. We don't think it's the majority of people. Again, if the dollar was at the level of last year, you will not feel it so bad. The low level of the dollar is clearly a problem for us as it make our products more expensive. The bad economy too. Sorry about the misunderstanding, it's related to the barrier language.

DOPPELBOCK  I purchased the 50% off license for SecretBook users. I like what app4mac have done with the interface and the export/import of my SecretBook data was simple and worked perfectly.

Yeah, I can certainly agree that it is not really a necessary upgrade as SecretBook was/does still work just fine, but with free upgrades in the future I thought I'd support the developers future plans for the app.

VAGABUNDO  From the developer's site, “A trial version has a limited feature set when compared with the unlocked version. These extra features can be unlocked at any time by entering a valid user license.” Non-sense. To obtain a license, you must pay for it, and to pay for it, it would be wise to fully evaluate the application. The question then is, how could you fully evaluate an application with a limited feature set?

Kudos to developers who provide a fully functional demo for a period of time or a number of launches instead. It’s not the case here.

LENW  I have to comment negatively on SecretBox, whereas in the past I would have commented quite favorably on SecretBook. I find it very appropriate that the name replaced "OK" with "X".

Two major items: (1) app4mac told me that they no longer support sync with DropBox, which was a major plus since I need to access "OK" from different Macs. They said they didn't believe in this, and that iPhone was the way to go (too bad I don't have an iPhone); (2) I also was not able to successfully import "OK" data into "X" - just got a bunch of garbage.

Then add that I am now asked to pay again for a product with less capability, and you've basically totally lost me.

Very very disappointed in this whole path.

GBUT  SecretBox is based on SecretBook app. by Bookshelf App... Former decided to give up with SecretBook development to put more time and efforts on another project... That could have been ok if leagcy users did not have to pay again for SecretBox, though a- 50% discount exists... Moreover, new app is not as convenient as formper one except that code seems to be better optimised when it comes to overall speed... But some flaws exist ( left column with groups and sub-groups that do not retain width between app launches, search results that are a bit cumbersome to display, no iPhone/iPod Touch app as of today, etc... ) Well, let's give a few weeks to App4mac to come back with improvements... But I'm not si happy to pay again for a software that is more a beta than a release.

WIKNO  The best password manager I have tried. Certainly the best out of all the popular ones and even the free ones I've tried. Why the best? Because it is so versatile, it will store any kind of sensitive data you want, in whatever manner you want (each entry is totally customizable), nice group management, and preferences available, more features than I need. It's only shortcoming MAYBE is the interface, but with version 4.0.5 the optional HUD/floater is such a great add-on. The interface is fine, don't get me wrong, but it's just not the best/most efficient POSSIBLE interface on the planet, so I knock it down to 4 stars on ease of use, but everything else is flat out 5's. Price is easily a 5 for me because I got the family license which is an absolute steal! Truly the best-in-breed after searching for so long for a better PW manager (while using 3.2.x for the last year and a half or so).

Also, RE: XPLICIT: in case you're wondering what it's like for developers: sometimes after you've spent hours and hours and hours squashing bugs and bettering your app that the world may run a little smoother for a few of your patrons, you might be so exhausted that the download link goes to the wrong file on one of the many file download sites you list your art on. As a web-designer I notice such things as dead-links or incorrectly redirected links very easily, but as my brother is a programmer, I also see how you might get burnt out when it gets time to update all of your listings on the web. IT DOES NOT MEAN THE PROGRAM IS BAD IF THERE IS A DEAD LINK ON THE INTERNET! (or a misdirected link or a link to a different version, etc.).

XPLICIT  Seems to me like an app with some serious problems. Version 4 released, three days later the first patch, 4.0.1, with the download containing version 4.0.2 ??? What's going on? Security Problems? I don't feel I can trust this app.

Some interface flaws too: You can choose an icon for a new group, but thats all, the standard field are the same for all groups. Funny, same field names for all purposes. Or you want create a new document, choose a template but then you change your mind an click cancel. The new document is created anyway. But with what settings??? Where is it saved, what password has it, and so on.

PS: Don't try serials you "find" on the net, SecretBook sends home your user name via Safari.

JASON SWAIN  Some people are never happy. Some comment that there are not enough updates, some complain that there are too many. The recent updates have been due to bugs with the iPhone sync and with the AutoOpen feature, nothing to do with security. The version 4 upgrade was a major update changing almost all parts of the code so there were inevitably some minor issues. There have been no issues at all with data loss or any of the security code.

SecretBook is very secure, and the iPhone sync especially so. This adds to the complexity of the application. The bug that was fixed in the iPhone sync was in the remote authentication code, using a protocol called SRP. The way this works is that the two sides of the sync both exchange a series of numbers that prove that both sides know the password, without sending it over the network at all. This also establishes a shared secret key that is used for encrypting the subsequent message flow. I don't know of any other applications that go to this length to protect the sync information, most applications don't even document the protocols they use for network authentication. The bug caused a crash before the session was established, so there was no vulnerability involved.

The second point (fixed set of fields) is just plain wrong. You can have as many fields as you want on any Group or Secret. You can define a default set for each group or you can add you own one at a time. Most other apps don't have this flexibility. All the fields that you define sync with your iPhone too.

And the PS, what a load of rubbish. Many SecretBook users use Little Snitch or other tools to ensure this kind of thing doesn't go on. Unlike some other applications SecretBook doesn't integrate with Safari. This allows you to use the Unix process separation to ensure that your passwords are only in one place. I'd like to know where you got this information from? Or was it just made up?

I do agree though that you shouldn't use stolen serial numbers :-).

XPLICIT  So what of the things I said was wrong?

You released a not thoroughly tested app, well done. Or didn't you? And how do I know now your low standards don't effect the security? Because you say so? That's quite funny.

Your understanding is also not the best. I never said the set of field is fixed. I said what good is it offering different groups when they all have the same fields? Doesn't improve the app. Useless then, just different icons. What a feature.

And for your comment on my PS. Now your lying. Of course you do send home the user name, SecretBook opens a website via default browser with the user name included in the hyperlink. A friend told me, so tried that myself. Here's what website is called: "www.i-graph.com/warez/?app=SecretBook&user=whatevershortusernameyouhave". And what do you do with that info? Exclude all users with that user name? Or what?
(Version 4.0.2)

Sep 18 2008

JASON SWAIN  Actually, you are right about the link. I had forgotten all about it. There is nothing sinister about it though. Until recently SecretBook was promoted and downloaded from www.i-graph.com, hence the domain name on the link. The link used to point to a page explaining that a stolen serial number had been detected and that SecretBook would not function with that serial number. Now the entire site redirects to bookshelfapps.com. As you point out SecretBook does this in full view of the user, they can see the URL in the address bar of their browser. The www.i-graph.com web site used to even have an article explaining this. I need to update the new site to include that information.

I have not checked the logs for this for a long time, but I've just had a look now and there are a few hits of this page every month. I just used the short username to identify duplicates so that I could get a rough idea of how much piracy was going on.

The page is only loaded when a user has gone to a warez site and downloaded a stolen serial number after all. I don't spend a lot of time working on the licensing code in SecretBook as I would rather work on features that help out the paying customers. It is not that hard to circumvent the license or even find a cracked version on the internet, but I try not to concern myself with that.

XENOPHILE  Whoa, what a gracious developer! Someone squeals about his application's trivial shortcomings and whines that it is too hard to pirate, and the developer's courteous response exhaustively details state of the app and even jokes about piracy.

Note to developer: this app ROCKS! I've been storing sensitive data using the ancient X-Locks, abandonware since 2002, because until now I hadn't found a superior enough replacement to justify the drudgery of transferring all my data. SecretBook is among the most "mac like" OS X shareware I've ever used; it's simple, elegant, and even succeeds in bringing a bit of joy to managing passwords and other sensitive data. It's no surprise that the developer found only a few piracy attempts per month, because SecretBook is well worth its price.

XPLICIT  The, as you call it, trivial shortcomings aren't so trivial in an app that stores sensitive data. To such an app apply other, stricter, criterias than to "normal" apps.

Almost every developer can make an app like SecretBook/Box/whatever. But the thing is, is the app usable, stable and - most important - reliable. That's what it's about. And that was not what I felt about SecretBook when I first tried it, unpirated by the way.

CHRISTIAN ROTH  At the time, I evaluated several packages for securely storing software licenses, bank account details and login passwords. SecretBook was the only one where the data fields could be different for each and every entry and named appropriately if the template for a category did not match the information to enter at hand. For example, sometimes a software license is called a "key", sometimes a "code", sometimes it includes a "name" component or a "TSID", sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes it is even a license file instead of a textual string. All that I can store nicely in this application, correctly named and ordered, access it quickly and copy to the clipboard for pasting wherever I want. The application also has a nice printing function to print all or selected items (e.g. software license keys) for hard disk crash proof off-site storage.

Contact to the developer was quick, polite and useful, and requested new features (for me, license file storage was essential) have been implemented quickly. I am using this software now for almost a year and am very satisfied.

WHYME?  If you are trying to tidy up your life right now and want to consolidate all of those pieces of papers littering your desk, this would be a great IF you want to use it for software passwords and if you don't expect to get the key from Kagi immediately. I paid for this over 24 hours ago and still can only use the demo which limits you to 10 passwords. I think it is worth it to try the demo. I also have 1Password, but I find that is only really helpful for website passwords and logins. These are both cool for what they do, but I suggest being clear what you need the app for and playing with it first.

AZCURT  I'm a comfirmed Password Wallet user and after looking at SecretBook, I think I prefer Password Wallet. It's totally secure, passworded and encrypted and can launch apps directly from within your file. Say you have an online banking account with a complex password - just open Password Wallet and click on the account and you are taken there with the password ready to use. Password Wallet quits when you close it or after a settable number of minutes of not being used. Check it out (at VersionTracker).

JASON SWAIN  I think the reason why you have two files is that one is an automatically created backup, it's created when you upgrade from the old file format to the new format.

Maybe it's paranoid, but I don't want anyone to ever lose a password file, and thankfully nobody has yet (at least nobody has told me they have).

You can quite safely delete this backup file, but also if you only have one file, check the "Automatically open this file" check box, then next time you open SecretBook it will go directly to your file. You can turn the option off in the settings panel (first icon on the toolbar).

As for too many updates, I was getting a bit worried that I wasn't updating it enough. I think you may be disappointed again soon :-). Actually, I think I know what you mean, you'd rather have larger updates but less frequently?

GAZMAN  I'm curious - what does this app do that Keychain Access doesn't?

JASON SWAIN  From The Developer - SecretBook is much more flexible than Keychain Access, you can store as many fields as you want against each item. The interface is also easier to search and view items.

You can use SecretBook for storing credit card numbers and bank details, something that Keychain access is not designed for.

Some people (myself included) like having passwords in an application that is not automatically accessed by a web browser, it's more secure that way.

JEEPEE  If you're leaving RadicalSafe, like I do, because it's not supported anymore and the bugs RadicalSafe has are very annoying, then SecretBook is your program.

Importing all the stuff from RadicalSafe into SecretBook works within seconds, fantastic!

Thanks a lot Information Graphics!

JEEPEE  This is a great program with a lot of features that make it very safe.

For example: You can make your passwords automatically hide after a specific time, lock when your Mac goes to sleep or after a specific time and your clipboard is cleared when the program is locked.

It's also nice to be able to find things through Spotlight.

Support is also very good, it's clear that the developer knows what he's doing and he really does something with the comment and requests he get.

EDUARD  I have a huge concern. What if this app "phones home" and transfers all your secrets? It would be great to hear the author's official statement on that.

JASON SWAIN  That is a good point, and I wouldn't take it for granted. SecretBook has been certified Spyware free by Softpedia, you can see the details here:

http://mac.softpedia.com/progClean/SecretBook-Clean-9588.html

If you really want to check you can monitor your network activity, or you can (I believe) also get applications that will block network activity from individual apps, just to be on the safe side.

SecretBook will never send information out to the internet, and there are only two cases when it will use the network. The first is when checking for updates, it gets a MacPAD file from www.i-graph.com. You choose to use this feature when you first start the application, so you can disable this. The second is when it detects a stolen license, and it opens a web page discouraging piracy. You can avoid this one two by not using a stolen license.

Now another point (admittedly I am biased here), but there is a cracked version of SecretBook available and quite easy to find. The code has been modified to break the license. Who knows what other modifications have been made, I would not trust my passwords to this version.

I hope this answers your question.

JOHANNES F.  Thanks for this nice application.

But there are a few things that are really

necessary:

- Icon "All" has clumsy whitering around

and the word "All" is to near to the Icon

- Window-size is not saved

- more optional fields for the items

- more "default-values" are necessary

- a customizable toolbar

Nevertheless this is really the best app

for Password management.

Thanks

JASON SWAIN  Thanks for your comments. I will address all of the issues that you raise. I have to laugh about the All icon comment, I am aware of it but I left it for this release. I've been involved a lot of software development projects and I've always had to draw the line and get something out the door in not quite perfect condition. Usually that means that there is a bug or two left. In this case I was really pleased that the only thing I was unhappy with was the border around the icon. I really wanted to fix it, but I had to draw the line and get it out the door.

One thing that I don't think I am emphasing enough is that this is a very secure application. Unlike some others out there I never decrypt your password unless I need to, i.e. to display it or to copy it, and even then I overwrite the memory once it is done. I think the auto hide on the password is also a nice feature to have.

Thanks for your comments.
