ILIKEIMAC I had the same problem with Name Mangler under Snow Leopard that others have reported; it loads files into its list at an unbearable slow speed, and I even force quit it several times convinced it had frozen. What solved it for me was turning off "Show icon previews for image files." This setting is in the General section of the preferences and applies to video files as well as image files; I noticed Name Mangler was fine if I dragged in non-video, non-image files like MP3s, and after turning this setting off, it's fine for video and images as well. CHEOPS Thanks for the tip! I was trying to add about five .avi files and it was really slow, beach-balling each time. With the show icon previews unchecked, it seems to work okay. (Version 2.0)

SPANKY DELUXE I've been using this app for several months now and it really is great. So useful. However, since upgrading to Snow Leopard the app has been very slow in loading up its file list that I've dragged into it. While doing so it slows my whole computer down making other apps stutter. This is on a Quad core Mac Pro with 6GB of RAM so I don't think my system is the problem. (Version 2.0)

APPLEHC I love this application! After using some similar products I have to admit. This is by far the easiest and best application. Its not very fast - but unless you got thousands and thousands of files to rename this will do it PERFECTLY. and, its freee! will donate! (Version 2.0)

CLAUCLAU I used r-name which still is useful for pre Leopard users: maybe this is the only downside of Name Mangler. But R-name is disappeared. I have a camera which everytime i swap SD card, it renames files from zero. And there is no option to avoid it. Therefore once I download files in one folder, OS X creates a file-001 and files-001 2 in order to avoid asking that a file with that name (from the previous SD card) already exist. OS X understands it that is probably not the same video and therefore silently makes this trick. Now problem is, that when renaming files chronologically I have to list files by date of creation, as in other view mode, they're sorted alphabetically. When I then drag the files to any software like Automator or others to rename them, these files get messed up, therefore renaming task useless. Name Mangler smartly override this problem, and lets you sort the files in any order you want. This app is not a simple stuff: PS I know i wrote like somebody who got paid, but no, i am a simple user. (Version 2.0)

HAL0THANE I have been a very frequent user of File List for several months but two things always bugged me about it: First, it was PPC only; and second, the window was not selectable with Command-Tab. Both have been addressed with the new Name Mangler 2.0. Name Manger 2.0 retains all the power of File List -- including the Advanced renaming syntax which I use very frequently -- and only expands on it. The droplet feature is fantastic for quickly renaming files that have the same pattern without having to reenter the pattern each time: simply save the droplet onto the Desktop or even into the Finder window and then drop the files onto it. They're renamed transparently. This little utility is one of those that makes me HAPPY to donate to its future development even when I'm not constantly nagged into doing so. If all software were written like Name Mangler 2.0, I'd have very empty pockets indeed! (Version 2.0)

STORMCHILD This is a great tool. It has a nice, clean interface, it works well, and it's freeware. I'm not a fan of the new name though. I suppose the old name didn't really give you an idea of what it does, but I've gotta say, the new one sucks! To "mangle" something means to damage or mutilate it in an unintended manner. Who would want that! That aside, I recommend this tool for all your batch file renaming needs. (Version 2.0)

FRONTPAGE The thing I truly LOVE about file list? The ability to change the list by selecting via name, date (modified or created) and several others. And it's stable, too. I've tried around 6 others, this one not only gives you a barn-sized number of choices to start or end your file(s) with, but it's simple to use. While ading or deleting, or inserting, you can add, delete or insert other things as well. A-plus rate. (Version 1.2)

ANONYMOUS An excellent program considering it's cost (free). However, there is much room for improvement: 1. The non-standard elements of the interface are disconcerting at first. All apps should support Command-Q, a File menu, and an Edit menu. 2. It would be ideal if a user could easily group renaming filters to process sequentially (i.e. "combined name conversions") . As it stands now, if you want to change the case, append a suffix, and change the case, each of these filters has to be executed separately to your batch of files, or you must write your own script using the built-in renaming language. 3. Search/Replace features should optionally be recursive within the same file name. Right now, you are forced to have them be recursive within a file name. 4. Have a graphic designer friend do a real icon. :-) (Version 1.2)

ANONYMOUS I've been using A Better Finder Rename to rename/renumber my files for the last couple years. File list is better, IMHO. It's faster, it's free, and best of all, it works in Path Finder. (ABFR works in Path Finder, too, but only if I drag the files I want renamed onto an ABFR icon or right-click & select ABFR. File List does it with a single click on its icon.) Five stars across the board, but I have two quibbles: sometimes it's slow to populate the list when I select a couple hundred files, but I think that's because I have an older, slower Mac, and I think it'd be nice if the window would close once it's done renaming. In fact, I think I'll contact the developer & suggest that. (Version 1.1)

BACON One of the better file renamers available. Interface is well done and the application is very fast and very powerful. That being said, here are a few suggestions (some may have been covered elsewhere): * The way things are currently laid out is downright spiffy, but you might want to consider using standard aqua interface elements for drop downs, etc. * Different name, different icon. The name doesn't really say anything about the application, and the icon... well... * Allow for 16x16 or smaller icons on the file listing on the right. Along the same lines, allow for multiple columns containing all the information you can sort by, with the option of hiding columns you don't use (for a good example of what I'm talking about, take a look at how Thunderbird handles column addition/removal). * Allow the application to reside in the dock. It is, after all, an application. Why doesn't it have a dock icon? Again, those are just suggestions. As is, the program works perfectly -- all my suggestions will merely help improve the user experience. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS Fantastic little bit of software. Others charge for software this useful, and none of them look this good. Within 30 seconds of downloading I knew what I was doing in the app. Easy as heck to use. And powerful. Just one suggestion: give the option for a user to view the file list in the left pane in the standard 32x32 size you've given, and, in addition, a simplified 16x16 view with only the file icon and name. The reason I suggest this is because often the window needs to be resized to a rather large size (in cases of many, many files, or files with long names), which makes facilitating drag and drop a little complicated.
