MACLOVER1.1  I find that Painter has become very dry over time, especially since the Corel years... less and less fun and more and more "palettish" and here you have ArtRage and its great ergonomy, not as powerful of course but but sufficient realworld paint/draw tools to do plenty. As for comments I read about resolution... not sure if pixels were limited in an earlier version... but I tried to set my page at 3508px X 4961px and it works (not quite real time but close on my G4... sure it'd be a breeze on a Quad G5 ) and that equates to an A3 page at 300 dpi... I would think it might suffice for most professional print uses LOL And it seems one could make one's page even much bigger (depending on Hardware of course). Yep very sweet app !!!!! It should be bundled with the OS... iPAINT LOL

AMERGIN  Beautiful, elegant, responsive.

Teamed with a graphics tablet this is an app which reminds you of what it was like to paint with real paints on real canvas.

JOHN F.  Great app for a bargain price. You can have lots of fun and do amazing stuff. Nice clean interface, unlike Painter. (Okay, the two don't really compare, but I hate Painter's bloated pallets interface.) The other sketch app, SketchBook Pro, costs 10 times as much. For sketching and painting on my Mac, ArtRage offers plenty of tools and really responsive developers. This app needs more Mac exposure. We really need more apps like these. Thanks for the continuing Mac support!

J0SH0  Pure fun. That's all that needs to be said. MS Paint has NOTHING on this. And the best part about it, you don't have to use a powerful image editor that takes up half your RAM. Five stars across the board!

KHANH  Draw and paint apps have always been difficult to master. ArtRage has broken down this barrier.

Old shool artists will definitely jump into this app by choice. The freedom just to sketch and paint without a learning curve is there. Just a plain thank you from a designer/artist such as myself.

TONY_115  This is REALLY a great app-it's just like drawing on a canvas, AND it's FREE (and shareware) it's a really nice looking app and it's HEAPS cooler than MS Paint.

SIMTY  I have been using Artrage with my kids for about a year. My 4 year old is CRAZY about it and has learned many of the computer basics from using AR1. Unfortunately AR1 is very unstable, it unexpectedly quits quite often. So when AR2 came alone I jumped at it. Sadly AR2 is no longer suitable for very young children specially using the free version as children can't read the dialog boxes the keep popping up due to features not being available in the free version. What would be great would to have a kids version with the stability of AR2, a simpler user interface like AR1 and a $10 price tag just to make it worth your while.

Keep it simpler

JOHN F.  Can sometimes be a little slow to follow my stroke at high resolutions. Okay, I only have a 1 GHz G4. This is still a great app and needs to be kept alive on the Mac platform. There aren't any good and simple, let alone cheap, natural media painting apps for the Mac. So even if I won't be using it that much, I will give the developers my $19.95, just for keeping the Mac version alive. This app needs better exposure in the media. I will review the full version at a later time.

NIAMOR  Really really nice program ! It's a true pleasure to work with it. Fantastic with a pen tablet.

Very very nice jobs.

And it's free ! A kind of utopia.

GREGORY BREDBECK  This is brilliant work, and that it is a freeware is a true sign of a generous mind-nature. I'd like the palette knife to be implemented sometime -- but even without it the program is superb.

PITERPAN   It's free. And it's very, very well done. Really Great!

That's one of those times that I feel that I have to write some words to the author of this wonderful painting program. THANK YOU for your generosity! :-)

DAVEYJJ  Excellent value for a free program. Yes, it's not Painter IX and it's not even Painter Classic (bundled with many tablets etc) but it's an excellent free sktching and painting tool and a wonderful intro to what can be achieved by digitally drawing and painting. Extraordinarily fast on a 1.5GHz 12" Powerbook with 768MB RAM. Great, simple UI. Highly recommended. Only cavaet ... ability to support at least 150dpi (passable print resolution).

T  I have a poblem when I draw with my Wacom tablet. If I draw, sometimes my stroke gets drawn, but sometimes subsequent strokes don't get picked up by the app and I only get a dot where I started to draw the stroke. It happens when I draw fast, but also when I go really slow. Say if I do ten subsequent strokes, the first two get drawn, then I get two dots, one stroke, three dots, and finally two strokes. Something prevents the strokes from being drawn. I don't know if it's my tablet driver or my processor, or my system, or just the app. I have a 1 Ghz G4 running on 10.4.2 with a Wacom Graphire 2 with Tablet driver 4.7.9-2. I have no problems in other apps, like SketchBook Pro.

AET  Though I noticed it happen once today in Photoshop - drawing on the tablet, the stroke didn't appear and didn't appear... finally lifted the pen off and on plopped a big blop. It looks like Photoshop could registers the pressure applied throughout though, corresponding to the massive dot that finally appeared - in ArtRage the dot always matches the starting pressure, regardless of hard you later press down before releasing. This is the only time I've noticed a different app do it, while on ArtRage it's a pretty consistent two or three times for every ten strokes.

JOEL MACCAULL  I have the same problem with my Wacom Pen Partner CT tablet on a base rev 2 mac mini w/ 10.4.2. The pace of the subsequent strokes makes all the difference. This is the ONLY problem I have found with this app. Hope it isn't difficult to fix.

LEAF  I just DLed this app. Seems AMAZING but I am also have the same issue with my Intuous 2 tablet. Overall it seems to respnd very slowly to the stylus. As was said before, strokes are often missed when drawing fast leaving me with a bunch of little dots and squiggles. I'm running a 1.25 ghz ALU-Book maxed out with 2GB of RAM. The machine can handle apps like photoshop and illustrator with ease, I don't know what the issue is here.

A M BEARSLEY  Oh, p@nts. Sorry everyone - stand by, new build with manual included will be uploaded later today.

1.1.2 has no new features, just bug-fixes and clean-ups for the Mac. The lack of manual is NOT an intended feature! That'll learn us for doing a build last thing on a Friday evening (NZT).

NETKAT  Tho I'd like to see higher resolution possible, I'd hardly characterize this application as a toy. Artrage is lean and mean, but offers a rich, mature and relevant tool set for sketching and illustration. I can see it highly useful for storyboarding and concept illustration, as well as other serious times of illustration. I'd venture a guess that if enough folks donate money, the author might spend more chair time to add more pro features, but for me, this app is on par with Painter, without the bamboozling interface. This isn't photoshop, and isn't trying to BE photoshop. It's an illustration tool, and rightly puts the focus on artistry rather than computational whiz-bang.

ANONYMOUS  Nice toy program. Has lots of potential.

Would like to see some Photoshop integration, as well as 300 dpi image potential so the pros can use it.

Right now, its good for showing "look what I can do" for beginners (web designers), but I'd like to see where this program can go...

ANONYMOUS  Very nice program for those just venturing into the digital art workspace. Truly a wonderful appetizer for those who want to experiment in the world of digital painting.

However, for those with more professional interests and deeper pockets than "free" , Corel Painter 9 is the obvious next step.

The features of this program are limited, due to its nature of wanting to introduce new users to digital natural media replication, and the program is to be commended for its attempts, but I cannot stand the comments posted by others that "its a new thing". It's not. Its a refresh of cheap Photoshop brushes.

If you want features like watercolor that drips on your command with the wind direction you desire, try Painter...as those features have been in there for at least 5 or six years now. Or if you like working with a Wacom tablet and want to apply airbrush pressure on an angle based on the tilt of your hand...old news for Painter users...

This is not a slag on the programmer(s), because if it creates more interest in natural media artistry then I applaud it. I sincerly hope that they can create some competition for the engineers of Painter (for those not in the know, Painter is to natural media what Photoshop is to image editing~ they can go toe-to-toe at what they each do).

I give it 5 stars for allowing people to play with a new medium, I give it 1 star for its potential to please the people that make a living off emulating natural media.

T  I've read the other comments and nobody says that "it's a new thing." Okay, maybe some people are new computer users and haven't ever come in contact with a natural media app like Artrage, and express excitement. Others have and just find the interface nice. Some express amazement because it's free. And others are thrilled because it brings a new app for Mac users.

Many do know there's Painter and Photoshop at the top, but why does everything has to be compared with those top apps? Can't we just have a whole range of apps for people with different needs and different budgets? This way, Artrage is a nice drawing app, or a nice sketch app. Like some find Alias Sketchbook Pro a nice sketch app - hey, it's no Painter or Photoshop, but people like its uncomplicated interface for sketching.

And I know professionals rely on the features of Painter and Photoshop, and some even like to see some real competition for Painter, but maybe Artrage doesn't want to be a Painter. Some day, there will be a Pro version of Artrage, but it will always be different from Painter in feature sets and in interface. There will always be something to complain about for Painter users, but others will just be pleased that there's a diversity in apps.

T  Wicked! Need more apps like this one on the Mac. Where are all the cool creative apps? This is one of them!

This is like a mini Painter, but with an interface that is more pleasing and certainly less crowded. I would like to see the option of using the system-wide Apple colors palette. I like to choose a certain color palette, and because it's build inside Mac OS X, it wouldn't be too hard to implement. Would be a nice Mac OS X extra. :-)

I would also like to the option of dragging the canvas by hitting the spacebar. The button is fine if you have a tablet PC, but with pen tablet and keyboard, a spacebar (or any customizable key) would be great.

Keep up the good work, and please, make sure to let the Mac community know about this app. Now if only Apple would introduce a tablet Mac...

ANDY BEARSLEY  Hi guys. We're glad you're enjoying using ArtRage.

Regarding the use of an installer: We tried several options, including just having a compressed disk image file, but decided the option least likely to cause inexperienced people confusion would be to use the installer.

However we're always open to suggestions on ways to improve the installation and application.

Thanks for your comments!

ADAM GARDNER  I would recommend including as a simple .app application folder/package on a disk image.

Use "Show View Options" from the Finder's View menu to set a background image for the folder which will become your disk image. The image should include text such as "Drag this icon to your Applications folder, or anywhere else on your hard disk that you want to store it. You may then eject this disk image."

Then, make the folder into a disk image. That's it.

The disk image for Adium X is a good example: http://www.adiumx.com/

AET  Using the Installer's Show Files ability shows that no files will be installed outside of the app itself when made. Don't know why they put it in .pkg form, but if you fear for your computer that much use something like Pacifist to extract what you want.

ANONYMOUS  This is a terrific program. Fun and free ... would be great for schools. The interface is simple and effective and gets out of your way. Really nice for sketching. Thanks for finally bringing out a Mac port!

Having problems on 10.2.8 though. Program doesn't launch consistently. Maybe 3/10 brushstrokes not recognized when it does. Have experimented with pressure settings. Will e-mail developer. Hope they can fix in a future update. Great stuff otherwise.
