DAYGLOW_UK  I used smsZap for a couple of years, but became disenchanted with it. Customer service is woeful with no response received to the emails I've sent them when their service appeared to be down.

The price per message hasn't dropped despite most carriers now providing much cheaper text rates than they did a couple of years. I currently also have a few credits left (enough for a couple of messages) which the software refuses to let me use.

It feels like this app has been abandoned by its developers. They are happy to take my money but don't seem to care whether I continue to use their service or not.

CAMáN  After I downloaded the app. and before trying it, I did a price comparison with my and my wife's existing mobile phone arrangements. I have a subscription and the wife has a pre-paid account. I could only save on buying 4500 credits and even then not much at all. For the wife it was much cheeper sending it over her phone. We can send SMS to the UK and Ireland for the same amount as a national SMS. (we are in Sweden at the moment, using Tele2Comviq) So all in all, no or very low savings and quite difficult to work out the actual cost involved. Promising app, for when the cost to send a SMS drops.

ANONYMOUS  This is a cool liitle app. It was easy to install and even easier to configure and get started. Whilst I have to pay for text credits they are very reasonably priced. Try it out and see if you agree.

ONLOOKER  Just downloaded this and tested it. Works beautifully. It stores your messages, integrates with your address book and tracks messages so you can monitor their progress! Slightly different feature set to SMSmac, but seems better value (difficult to be absolutely sure because this app is free, whereas you have to pay for SMS mac and of course the cost varies depending on where you are sending the message). But the pricing for SMSzap is much more transparent, plus you get ten free credits to test the app. So this is the one I'm going to use. Sending SMS is a real rip off on mobiles, particularly abroad. How much profit does the network make on an sms? I've been told it only costs them £0.001 (yes that is the right number of zeros!) So how much does it cost using smsZap?

You can buy either 500, 1000 or 4500 credits. Sending sms to different countries costs different amounts, but lots of places seem to need three credits. So if you buy 500 an average sms will cost £0.098, if you buy 1000 the cost is £0.084 and if you buy 4500 the cost is £0.078. That last is about half what it costs me to send an international sms, so it looks prety good value. But of course, I'd like it to be even cheaper!

What could be improved? Be good if you could type a name from your address book into the number box and it would find the mobile number.

Give it a try, you have nothing to lose (and just to be cautious, use a throwaway email account).
