BRYAN GOLDSTEIN  Due to the recent switch to universal binary there are still a few bugs I will need to Iron out this version fixes a bit of them but there are many more. If you find a bug and would like to help tell me about it, bryan@widgetfactor.com. I apologize for the inconvenience and hope that I can address all the bugs .

Bugs I know of:

- When you open a widget from in wcode it doesn't open right to get around it you can close wcode and open the widget with wcode from finder.

-Problems with having multiple documents open

JON  it'll get you started, but you still need to do coding and graphics work, so it doesn't make it much easier.

more importantly, i didn't see the plugin creator/manager anywhere. either it doesn't exist or it's not intuitive, and there is no help or directions.

my 2ยข, it's not worth more than $5.

TENSHIKUR0  Good app with Great potential.

Sets out the basics for novice developers who may want to cobble quick widgets together.

That being said, as some have commented before. For experienced developers, most of the elements that Wcode brings together can be created manually in about 10minutes.

Still a good app, though.

--

One question: for the developer, why do the widgets created keep disappearing?

They disappear fromt the widget manager install screen (if you wait long enough), and they disappear once initiated in Dashboard...

--

Saw someone else ask this, didn't see it answered.

Cheers.

BRYAN GOLDSTEIN  Thanks for your comment. Wcode 1.0 does fix the saving crashes and much more bugs like that I think that the one you mentioned about it disappearing is also fixed. Make sure you get 1.0 when it comes out.

ANONYMOUS  I have not tried either Wcode or Widget creator. But I think your Shareware is done. Not that I would not have paid the $7.00 for a version 1.0 of your software but take a look at:

Widget Creator:

Widget Creator is freeware for beginners and advanced widget designers. It is here to help you in designing your widgets. It includes:

Aqua effects templates, including the "famous" Apple reflection Aqua effect

A "skeleton" widget to help you get started - simply add your script, and adapt your css files.

The Apple script that "flips" your widget.

Scripts and graphics if you want your widget to have a personalized scroll bar

A "virgin" dashboard icon that you can personalize

And the original Apple backside image and the tips to recreate it.

ANONYMOUS  Pretty cute but a few points;

It's capable of making kind of...well I don't know how to describe them really, but 'null' widgets which appear in Dashboard momentarily then vanish if (presumably there is a problem with the widget) and you keep doing build+preview (wcode then crashed afterwards). They appear in the process list but cannot be killed even with kill -9, as they instantly respawn with a new PID.

I had 6 of these after experimenting with wcode and had to restart to clear them (although they were not using any CPU resources)

Perhaps some kind of error checking before it actually sends the widget to Dashboard to see if the widget is viable is in order.

Thanks

JESSE HOGUE  This has great potential and its a great idea. The only thing is, I dont know if it belongs in the widget section. The actual program isnt a widget...but it does include a buy widget. I dont know, I can see why its here in this section, and I can see why it shouldnt be. Regardless, its a great idea, you are doing a great job with this. Dont let what other say bother you, I would gladly pay 7 bucks when this is fully going. Its a great time saver. Great job!

ANONYMOUS  I see your point and agree only that widgets SHOULD be free. Not to say that someone might charge for one an actually get money b4 someone else makes the same for free. However, this application is indeed a great application for a charge $$$. In my opinion one (A developer of a widget) could create one or more free widgets to get their name out there to sell other non widget software for a fee.

Hey Dev! Keep up the good work. When you have a version 1.0 I will send you your $7.00.

Thanks.

JOHN WELLS  Hey! Great job on the project so far.

As a fellow develper, I'd like to provide a professional icon, interface design, and stable webpage hosting for Wcode for no charge.

Please get in touch with me via AIM or email at iindigo@mac.com. I tried to contact you directly, but I couldn't find your email address anywhere, so I'm posting here.

Good luck on the project!

ANONYMOUS  I also think that this program has a great idea, but could get better, and am willing to wait for the publisher to make it better. I would definitely buy it, but only if some major improvements were made.

BRYAN GOLDSTEIN   At first I thought everyone was being harsh, but then I recently tested wcode in Tiger and it stunk. Nothing worked everytime you built a widget it messed it up! I was shocked. So now that I can test on Tiger I'm working on my comeback. So far I've finished making an extra info tags field work, I added image viewing to the filebrowser, I fixed up the save as menu item and fixed all the saving bugs where wcode would delete image files and mess up the info.plist file. I hope everyone will give wcode another chance and I am kindof afraid of the reaction I may get in version b0.3.

ANONYMOUS  that's great that you guys feel bad for the dev, but rating it "on the idea of the program" is doing a disservice to other people basing their downloads/time on the ratings.

I for one hope this app turns into a great one, but it's not there yet. Either rate it for what it is or don't rate it at all.

MRANONYMOUSPOSTER  Bryan

First off. Never make excuses especially the one about your age.

I give you AAA for Effort. Personally I have tried to write a widget and did not succeed. This program looks promising.

Take the negative remarks in stride. Learn from them and try not to take them too personally. Forget about those who say they have also developed a simuliar product. I am normally one to complain about charging for a so called easy to write application. Not that I am saying this was easy to write or not. I will be looking forward to the further development of your software.

I am going to rate your program based on the idea of this program.

I would pay $15.00 for this. Keep up the good work.

BILL HENRY  Don't get discouraged Bryan - some folks can't just write criticism on an app without being harsh. I guess the nugget of value in below comments is to not charge for alpha or beta software. The beauty of shareware is that they can try it and then pay or not pay - so its not like they lost $15 actually...

SU ROOT  Bryan,

You have a bright fruture ahead of you! Dont worry about money, with your skills in time you will have a excellent job, or be your own boss, I Ill end up working for you.

But I do suggest you get a Computer Science or related degree (your programs can pay for your college?).

May I suggest donation ware? seem people are willing to donate money to the project $7 dollars is better then $0 they will pay what they feel is worth.

Regards

ANONYMOUS  this is an inclomplete piece of software. developer should not release alpha phase of his project and then and then charge people for it. if he wants money for it, then he must build a COMPLETE application.

as for releasing it as a freeware first then switching it to shareware - one could add a disclaimer or warning explaining that this freeware program may, at some point, become a shareware. nothing worng with it. If it is good, folks may be willing to pay for it. if it's still lousy application, then people will know developer is the pinhead.

*½...

ANONYMOUS  why must devs insist on charging for obviously incomplete, alpha-quality apps?

The interface is unimpressive, right down to the fact that you can't resize the window. You also can't hit cmd-a to select all of the text in an input frame (for example, when you're editing the html, javascript, or css). Very limited options in terms of what you could manually enter into a plist. For some reason I could only find a way to add up to 4 images, what's up with that? Just when I had gotten fairly frustrated with how the app didn't do what I wanted it to, it crashed.

All of this after having to wait about 10 seconds for a registration nag window to disappear on first launch.

I encourage apps aiming to make widget creation easier, and hope this develops into a good one. But I absolutely can not give a good rating to not just an unfinished and poorly executed app, but one that costs $15 for the pleasure of moving it to the trash can.
