ILGAZ  Good thing about still having Mac PPC is, MS didn't have decency and/or capability to code Silverlight 2 for PPC so PPC owners doesn't get Silverlight installed with this thing.

Still flaming Adobe? At least they can and will maintain Flash with PPC code no matter how hard it is.

JAMUS  The Silverlight installation gets a star drop right from the start, which is too bad overall considering the Flip4Mac software is useful sometimes for when clients send over a dreadful WMV file, but the inclusion of Silverlight is not welcome.

It is nice that Telestream does tell us about the Silverlight inclusion during the install (although most users will never actually read it), it is disappointing to see it added in to the install. If we wanted Silverlight we would install it ourselves.

I wonder if Telestream is being forced/pressured by Microsoft to include Silverlight in their default install?

ILGAZ  I wonder what will happen when Silverlight, part of MS culture gets some "remote execution" security issue.

Will the team at MS who still have face to ship that performance/security disaster named MS Windows Media Player to Intel macs give up all work in hand and ship a security update for OS X which shows their every attempt as joke?

This is a company who managed to ship MS Office latest version installed as user 502, traditionally no power, secondary account on OS X and people pay huge amount of money to them for it. Silverlight on the other hand, is "free".

Not a political thing, rather a technical thing since I know how MS works (like most do), I would opt out of Silverlight even if my Mac was supported. I don't allow it even to my Windows machines/managed clients since it is a really needless failed attempt to kill Adobe flash and nothing else. Even MS joint ventures doesn't use it.

Oct 16 2009

ILGAZ  You could have easily missed it since it defaults to ON and carefully buried under "customize" which no OS X user uses. They really know nobody will click Customize and that is why they default to ON rather than OFF.

Another issue with installer is, it "phones home" by needlessly embedding remote images from MS web server in "success" screen. When I got some time, I will sure alert Apple about this potential abuse of Installer/Webkit integration. If we had REAL security experts and non snake oil AV companies, it is their job to alert their customers and Apple about such ABUSE of Installer.app.

DJCZ  There is a bug in the installer. If your account is Filevaulted, the installer squawks that it can't find a needed disk. It then sits there patiently waiting, but there is nothing you can do and it won't let you quit normally, so you need to force quit the installer application.

The error I'm seeing...

Please insert the "xyz" disc to continue installation.

You have chosen to install software that requires this disc.

ILGAZ  If one uses Apple's standard installer, it is his job to "workaround" some issue (!) which is in fact the built in functionality of OS X since 10.3 or .4.

No need to apologize, they should care about such issues more than sneaking silverlight and remotely pulling images from MS servers in success screens.

STEVEN GOODHEART  Wow, this looks like a monumental overhaul on Telestream's part to make this nifty (and to me, indispensable) utility work with Snow Leopard. Reading the changes they were forced to make to deal with 32 vs. 64 bit issues, I think they did all they could to maximize functionality of the program. Too bad QuickTime X doesn't support non-Apple formats, but at least QuickTime 7 still available. Although some might protest, the Silverlight support is also welcome to this user, since some sites require it, and frankly, I've never had any problem with it on my machine, and they give the option of not installing if you want.

The bottom line for me is that it's working great on my machine, within the limitations of the whole 32 bit vs 64 bit issues that so many developers are having to deal with now. Hats off to Telestream for a remarkably powerful program that gives a heck of a lot of functionality for *free.*

ILGAZ  They forgot to post this to "What's new?' and IMHO they should be carefully watched by Macupdate admins in the future.

"This installer also includes a browser plug-in for Microsoft® Silverlight™, which allows you to play Smooth Streaming video content. This is installed by default. To disable its installation, click the Customize button on the Installation Type pane and uncheck the Microsoft Silverlight Plug-in option."

They should also add "We abuse Apple's installer.app architecture so each time final screen appears, our application phones home via pulling a remote webpage".

Guys, I come from Windows land and this is something we had to deal in 2001-2003 period. We should all raise our voices against this kind of treatment or, serious, OS X will be really really infested. Speaking from experience, these are first steps...

TELESTREAM DESKTOP SUPPORT SUPPORT  The insert disk error message (which is very misleading) usually happens when FileVault turned on. Move the Flip4Mac WMV.mpkg installer to some location outside of the user's protected area. By default, the installer attempts to run from the Desktop, which is inside the File Vault protected area. Just move this file to either another volume if you have one, or anywhere else outside of the /Users/ folder. For example, /Users/Shared. This should allow the installer to work correctly. This anomaly is noted on the Flip4Mac Support Site - http://www.telestream.net/telestream-support/knowledge-base/kb-0083.htm

I understand that iTunes isn't compatible with WMF, but I was meaning to find if support could be added in the form of an iTunes plug in.

Since iTunes is QuickTime compatible, and Flip4Mac makes WMF open in QuickTime on the fly, it seemed a reasonable thought.

I have tried what you suggested -- saving WMF to MOV and then opening iTunes. This is great for standalone files. I don't think I was able to make this work with streaming WMF radio.

1. Beta versions are not part of the automated check for update process. If anyone is interested in being notified of new beta versions, please register at http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_beta_register.htm. We will send you notifications via email when beta versions are available.

2. The check for update process runs when the the componenet is in use. For example, if the frequency setting is set for weekly but the component sits idle for two weeks, the check for update will run when the component is used (in week 2).

If anyone has more questions or needs further help, please feel free to post here and we will get to the bottom of the issue. Thanks for using Flip4Mac.

P.BUBBLEGUM  Flip4Mac is impossible to install.

There's no customer service number you can call for assistance, either. You have to wait 2 days for anyone to get back to you.

They give you 2 different sets of installation instructions: (1) enter your name above the serial field (2) DON'T enter your name in the serial field.

I've never had an issue downloading a program I bought online.

P.BUBBLEGUM  My first post was a typo as I was stuck on the installation process at 2:30am. The 2 sets of instructions say:

(1) Enter your name above the serial field.

(2) DO NOT enter your name above the serial field.

That being said, I think you can all find something better to do than slam people on anonymous message boards.

TELESTREAM DESKTOP SUPPORT SUPPORT  Unfortunately, it can be difficult to update instructions that appear in different places on the web. Initially, Flip4Mac did require both the name and serial number for activation. Earlier this year, that was changed and only the serial number is now required. However, if a name is entered it won't prohibit activation!

TELESTREAM DESKTOP SUPPORT SUPPORT  Perhaps you're referring to Windows Media that is has DRM protection? According to Microsoft "Windows Media Digital Rights Management (DRM) is a proven platform to protect and securely deliver content for playback on computers, portable devices, and network devices. The latest version offers increased flexibility to support a wide range of business models that provide consumers even greater access to protected audio and video content."

Currently, Microsoft only makes Windows Media DRM technology available for Windows Operating Systems & other device platforms. In our previous discussions with Microsoft, they indicated that they had no plans to offer DRM support on the Macintosh. We're hoping that they will be able to change this policy.

I understand this.

I was basically noting my observation with this, otherwise, excellent plugin.

However, every Mac I have used/installed to running

Examples:

(granted slightly old). Running QT 7.4.x.

The only solution has been to reinstall

FHF  This version of Flip4Mac WMV Player brought my Aluminum PowerBook to its knees. For weeks my computer randomly crashed at least once a day. In addition, it would often refuse to sleep, or had a dark screen (and was unresponsive) when awakened from sleep, or went dead during sleep. Occasionally got the 'gray screen of death' ("This computer must be restarted"). And when it was working, internet access was very slow ("contacting xxxx"). Extremely frustrating.

Re-installed OS 10.4.11, ran disk permissions, DiskWarrior, nothing fixed the problem. Started removing any system modifiers one by one: Quickeys, SafariBlock, EarthDesk, Perian. No better. Stopped using my wireless USB mouse. No better. Finally removed the very last non-stock item: WMV Player. Bingo. I can now put the computer to sleep as often as I want, it wakes normally, internet access is satisfyingly zippy. My PowerBook is born again, and has been working fine for several days.

One by one I re-installed Quickeys, SafariBlock, and my wireless mouse. No problems whatsoever. I'm not about to re-install WMV Player to relive my misery; there's no doubt in my mind that it was the source of my difficulties.

Xypher - Version: 2.2.0.49,

Looks like I had a similar experience to the poster below. Digging through my hard drive, I had two versions of the preference pane installed it seems. The older one, (v2.1.3) was the version being used, but when I went to the about box it would strangely show up as 2.2.0.49 hence the confusion. Looks like their installer isn't very thorough when deleting and upgrading the proper files.

I apologize sincerely, but they should take their share of the blame.

Sorry, this one breaks my Mac - Version: 2.2.0.49,

RestonMacGuy

After trying all day to listen to my weekly audio streamcast (Music From the Hearts of Space), I decided to try another computer, and found that it was not the source but my Mac. Each time I tried, Safari would lock up tighter than a drum, requiring a force quit.

Unfortunately, the Flip4Mac web site's links to older versions are broken, and the site is unmanned until December 26. I did manage to find version 2.1.3 in a backup set, but the pref pane had to be installed using 2.2.0.49. This results in some odd error messages, although I was able to listen to my program.

Running PPC Mac OS 10.4.11 with the latest security patch on a 1.67 GHz 15" Powerbook.

This isn't the first time Flip4Mac has gone kablooey on my computers. I hope I can get the older version and wait until Telestream updates to another, more stable version.

BRUCE_Y  Ditto on this request to developers: Please allow us to choose the install option of: Current User or All Users.

What I often do after an unruly program forces such an admin/all user install is to manually move the item(s) from whatever Library folder to my ~/user Library folder.

I know it is not necessarily ideal, as it may lose the permission repairability if the installer created a install receipts package, but so far, no tech troubles that I can attribute to my manual relocations. 8)

Plus in some cases, I send a feedback email/post to the developer asking for the option of current user install.

So, my guess is that 2.2.0.49 was/is the final release or a very near-final release candidate and someone at Flip4Macville messed up and posted it prematurely and as a beta. So it got pulled. Just a guess, but sure looks like that is what happened. Who knows.

Previous Flip4Mac WMV Player beta installer windows were clearly marked with a beta label superimposed upon the Flip4Mac logo in the installer window. This 2.2.0.49 installer is not designated as beta within the installer itself unlike previous beta installers.

BUBBAMAC  Any ideas on why it takes a 200-300 MB WMV file like a minute to load in Quicktime. This is on a c2d Macbook w/ 2GB RAM running Leopard. Took just as long in Tiger. And yes, I have the "open local files immediately" option checked in the preferences and the files are local. I tried using VLC but it didn't do a very good job decoding the files. Any ideas?

FDQN4FH  Early versions were unstable. But current version is quite stable and awesome. I like the Internet plug-in. And the wmv3 playback. If there is any slight whiff of instability -- then out it'll go.

Some wmv3 files play blurrily, which makes subtitles impossible to read.

The viewing software is free, and fills a useful role where none else could/would: not much to whinge about really. In fact, I would like to say thank you.

I believe VLC will play back Indeo 3, but the surefire way to play them all back is to use Quicktime 6 under Classic. If you have the Indeo 3, 4 and 5 codecs installed in your OS9 system folder, you can play those files, and convert them to something that Quicktime 7 in OSX will play.

JIMW  If you are look for something greater than "sliced bread" for your Mac, here it is. After installing this product I found that I could remove WMP and not miss it at all. This product also, by using the Quicktime interface allows me to save most files to my computer for later viewing after they are loaded, a feature that was mostly absent when using WMP. I am also getting fewer failures or question marks for web images after installing this product. It seems to be compatible with more file types. To say I am delighted with this product is an understatement.

I believe it is a "must have" plugin for every Macintosh running OSX. I would give it 4 thumbs up but I just don't have that many.

CRAIGSEE  Thanks Josh, I know it works fine in Safari. I've heard this about Camino but I thought Firefox was ok. Flip4Mac is testing an update to the player so if you can post an example link that would be good.

J0SH0  Best example would be videos from Break.com. Never really go there much, but my friends are always sending me links from there.

Here's a screen shot I took from my computer.

NOTHINGISTRUE  I can confirm the same problem, running OS 10.4.5 firefox 1.5.1, flip4mac v. 2.0.1. Any windows media files are played with the display window offset or jumping around, even while the video plays. Hoping for a fix soon.

TOMIS  They fixed the crashing, very nice!

Note: I set it to open WMV in QuickTime Player. Thusly I can easily stop the loading of those darn embedded WMV music vids all the kids seams so enamored with on MySpace.

DRAD  Love it! Finally mac users can now view video clips, news, etc from all those short-sighted, windows-centric, Mac-neglecting media sites that provide clips/media viewable only through the big ugly monopoly.

This is a GREAT service for mac users. THANK YOU!

INFINITELINE  Flip4Mac WMV is a great tool. I'm very happy that they have created a free player and when I get a few dollars I will upgrade to provide them some support. The current version does seem to cause the Microsoft suite crash when accessing the Office project manager. Showing it at startup can be turned off and then you will not have problems. I have run into just one wmv that did not decode properly and am looking for other examples. Overall, very nice!

CRAIGSEE  If you remove 3ivx and DIVX from Quicktime components you may find that Flip4Mac does not cause crashes.

Of course Flip4Mac is working to make sure all components play nice together.

ROBERT GERE  Played Windows Media quickly and smoothly when previewing music at Amazon, but closing the player window instantly crashes Safari and quitting Safari with a player window causes a crash also. It has potential and I hope the developer works on stability soon.

Hope they fix this problem.

FROMAGE-HEAD  Seems to work quite randomly with the internet plug-in. (sometimes I have:"flip4mac cannot play the movie", sometimes not)

But when it works it's far better than WMP. Better playback, control, you can save the fileÂ…

(I'm using 10.3.9 and QT 6.0.3)

MACUSER25  I installed it and so far so good. I have encountered no bugs and Word, Excel, and Powerpoint load just fine. Seems to work fine in 10.4.4.

I am soooo glad that there is an alternative to Windows Media Player. As many fellow mac users know, WMP is horribly slow and inefficient. I say try it, its free!!

SBDEHART  Hello:

Flip4Mac has confirmed a conflict on systems running a combination of Microsoft Office v 10.1.6, 3ivx QuickTime Component and Flip4Mac V 2.0(.1). We're working on a long-term fix and will post an update asap. If you disable the Project Gallery that displays when you open an MS program, the crash should be eliminated. If you have a system that falls outside of this configuration and still have a problem, please email details to support@flip4mac.com

Thanks

SENORTUCO  WMP for Mac OS X is really a piece of crap.

I was pleased to lern that a software could replace it.

This looks great but unfortunately somes big bugs remains.

Somes wmv wont play and will crash Quicktime.

Retry to open 2 or 3 times and Quicktime prefs will be corrupted. The same in Safari (with the plug-in).

Looking to the preview (in columns mode of the finder) of wmv files will sometimes crash the window manager.

Great application, great idea but still some work to do...

(Tested on a PM G5 2 x 2Ghz with Quicktime 7.04 and OS 10.4.4)

CRAIGSEE  Shouldn't crash Quicktime 7.04 if you're using Flip4Mac 2.0.1. Make sure you updated.

If you have an issue go to the Flip4Mac site and post on their tech support forum.

GOODSTUFF04  I had the same problems with Flip4Mac with it not opening and them when I uninstalled my WMP would not open and kept messing up! I fear I do not know what "preferences to set" for the Flip4 Mac and how it affects the Preferences for QuickTime or the existing WMP. Does anybody have a site that clearly goes over setting up the Preferences for all theses media players so I can avoid problems.

Also, do the Preferences for Internet Explorere also affect how these things work???? I love the idea behind Flip4Mac but feel like I don't know enough to make it work with my G4 using 10.4.4

Any ideas are welcome.

JOHN F.  Works fine without a hiccup. Windows Media Player for Mac was always a pesk. It was slow in streaming video and would many times stop in the middle of running a video. This is a nice solution. Still funny, though, Windows Media inside QuickTime. What's next? RealMedia inside QuickTime? Would probably run better too!

SMALLDUCK  This isn't wierd, but rather how it should have been implemented all along. Quicktime is not just a codec, its a framework for plugging in codecs.

(Probably Apple is guilty of the same on Windows, making Quicktime stand apart from the rest of the system when instead it could be more seemlessly integrated)

TOKYO SENBEI  Nice!

Works great in many QuickTime enabled applications. Previously, it was easier to use a Windows box for manipulating Windows Media but this makes life much less complicated since I can utilize my Mac programs and workflow.

Hope to see increased performance and better integration (i.e. file type and icon) in future components.
