ROBOTANK From the developer's site: "sidenote is no longer supported until the end of my PhD Thesis in January 2010, that is eating up all my free time. Updates are planned, thanks for your understanding and support !" If anyone was wondering, as I was, whether sidenote is dead, here's our answer! I'm not sure how the current version works on Snow Leopard, but I guess I'll give it a try. (Version 1.7.3)

AARGL I'm on 10.4.11 and I must say that Sidenote doesn't always appear when I move to the edge of the screen (maybe some conflict with other apps... ???), but with the shortcut it's ok. My main goal was to find a drawer staying invisible to store in it SMILEYS to integrate in my mails, and it does the job perfectly, so, even if it wasn't intended as its main purpose it's perfect for me! WHITEMERE Absolutely great app - used it for a few years now and is so simple and efficient you forget it's not just part of the OS. For those having trouble using it with Leopard straycat posted a fix on the developer's homepage: http://stashbox.org/217632/sidenote.app.zip I find that version works absolutely fine for me now as of 10.5.6 (i.e. no strange blue arrows in expose, sidenote slips in and out just by mousing over the screen edge again instead of having to 'select' it from expose etc.) Still not so good with spaces apparently but as I don't use spaces I don't find that a problem. JEANNETOURETTE Who is straycat? Thanks to her so much, it works also on 10.6.: sidenote pops up even when an app's window is filling the whole screen, but in exposé/spaces, no annoying white window is seen! now it is the way it should be (IF it keeps the content of my notes safe - in the past sometimes the frontmost note's content was empty after a restart of the computer, i had to restore from time machine, losing always some recent notes. but this hasn't happened for a while - maybe because i use the force-save option always now!?) SUPERC I LOVE Sidenote, however since my update to leopard, it seems a little buggy. I have spaces turned OFF and I still have to "choose" the application in expose in order to gain access to the drawer. I hope that these issues will be addressed in future updates! Thanks again for a great, useful, program.

DNEM41 i just want to start out by pointing out that this is a 5 out of 5 overall, and that i gave EOU and features rating a 4 and a 2 respectively. thats because im hoping the people who made this will pay attention to these because this app is so close to being the perfect note-taker: - i would like the ability to copy and paste screenshots into and out of the note when it pops up. sometimes i just need to hold a screenshot where i can see it until i decide where i want to use it for good. in essence the note-taker would act as a visual clipboard. - i wish i could adjust the timing of the open and close separately. it gives me the option to choose whether i want to open with hotkeys only or close with hotkeys only, but it groups the popup/close delay as one setting. sometimes i would like it to open faster and close slower using my mouse. that way i can use my mouse to bring it up immediately and go and grab what i want to paste it into the note w/out it closing on me real fast. - yes i would like the option not to have/adjust the auto-save option. i usually end up saving it manually if i think its that important anyway. -overall, using the drag menu to navigate between notes when the note is open is pretty easy. - i do wish that right underneath the drag menu, the icons were on the bottom instead. if this would get rid of the drag pad that is already at the bottom, then this would be a problem (since i like to sometimes move it up and down the side), but maybe the drag space can be put somewhere else (or hopefully it wouldnt interfere with it). - yes, the expose thing is annoying but i can deal w/ it in the shortrun this is like the only 6 things out of the maybe 8 that are stopping this from being the most functional/useful note-taking app out there. its already the best, in my opinion, but that doesnt mean it cant still be made better. ONLOOKER This is a fabulous program. First, it seems utterly reliable. In two years of use it's never lost any data. It autosaves, but you can force a save if you want. Second, it's always just there, at the edge of the screen. That means no switching, moving windows, whatever. It really does seem to be the fastest way to store and retrieve information I've found. Just one simple move of the mouse and the drawer slides smoothly out. And that smoothness seems to characterize sidєɳotє. DEMORAY I love this little note-drawer app. I've tried dozens of note apps and this is the one I come back to. Plus... it's FREE. It's as simple as Stickies, but the notes stay out of the way in a sliding drawer at the side of your screen. One feature I would like to see is the ability to turn off automatic note saving. I prefer to choose what gets saved and when. Other than that minor issue, this has everything I want in a simple note app... and once again, it's free. (Version 1.7.3)

CHRIS DISREGARD I spent months telling myself I didn't need a note taking app. but finally downloaded this one. I love it! It's made everything a lot more organized, and it couldn't be simpler to use. It looks attractive, loads fairly quickly on startup. All in all a great app. I only have one minor gripe, the fact that it's limited to screen sides and not top or bottom. Using apps like Photoshop which have side tool panels means I find myself pulling Sidenote out by accident more often than I'd like. If it were possible to put it in one of the screen corners that would be even better. (Version 1.7.2)

KAUFI Very useful indeed! I loved Aplle's note app, but after a while I completely replaced it by Sidenote, since it prevents the notetaking clutter I had before. SIDETRACKED My favorite of the many note apps I've tried. I use it constantly. For me, just the right balance of flexible, unobtrusive, and managable. Others were either too basic so annoyingly complex that I'd end up not bothering. I love that it hides away, but pops out with a single hot key or mouse move, then hides away again the moment I'm done. I use it enough that I felt compelled to send a donation, which I only do with freeware that really becomes part of my daily life. This did. (Version 1.7.2)

XARIK There appears to be a memory leak w/ the button mouseover. CHATELP I can't reproduce this bug on my computer. What version of MacOS are you using ? Also, do you use ShapeShifter or any haxie on your computer ? (Version 1.7.2)
| Aug 12 2006 |
XARIK I'm running 10.4.7 right now on an iMac 2.0ghz Intel. I don't have Shapeshifter currently installed on my computer (although at one point I did). It seems it only works when you move the mouse quickly over the buttons. It doesn't always happen, though. I wonder if it has something to do with Rosetta apps, because if I recall correctly, I had MS Word open while entering a note, so maybe that might have had an influence (so it probably might not have anything to do with sidenote itself). Still, thanks for the prompt response! (Version 1.7.2)

CHATELP 10.3.x users can download older versions of sidenote here: www.chatelp.org/sidenote/sidenote_1.7.dmg www.chatelp.org/sidenote/sidenote_v1_6_1.sit As I said, it's not really a bug in sidenote 1.7.1, it's more likely an incompatibility of some sort with versions of OSX prior to Tiger. The strange thing is that I can't reproduce the bug anymore.:/ Another bug is that sometimes the about-window doesn't show when clicking on "about sidenote". Can't reproduve the bug anymore. Don't know anymore what I did before that produced this strange behavior. Is there a feature to rename the default note? I tried but nothing happens when clicking on "rename note". What am I supposed to do with a note called "default note" which cant be renamed? :-/ If I give a color to a note, its impossible to use the top pop-up button anymore. CHATELP The default note is not a bug. It can't be removed because its purpose was to garantee that there is always at least one note available to enter text. I'll may change this behaviour in a future release. I can't reproduce the color bug here. Can you give me more information ? (Version 1.7.1)
| Aug 9 2006 |
STIKE My system: PowerMac G4 933, 10.4.7, all updates. Clicking on the popup bar usually shows all notes, to switch between them. All notes are marked with a circle, which is white... If I have now any note and switch to any color than white, the whole note is colored (red, for example) and the circle in the popup bar disappears. If I click now on the popup bar, it gets dark, as if it was clicked, but no popup appears. As soon as I return to the white color, the circle reappears and I can switch between notes with the popup bar again. I use an interface theme (non-Aqua), maybe this is related. I will try to check that. (Version 1.7.1)
| Aug 9 2006 |
STIKE Yep, disabling the interface theme (Shapeshifter) resulted in the disappearance of the bug! Now it works. By the way, the other thing that is bugging me is not that I cant DELETE the default note, but that I cant even RENAME it! If only it was renameable, it would be no issue at all. (Version 1.7.1)
| Aug 10 2006 |
CHATELP Don't deactivate your theme for the whole system, just add sidenote to the exclude list of shapeshifter. Btw, could you give me the name of the theme so I can try to reproduce the 'bug' on my computer. But in fact it is not a real bug, it's just that shapeshifter is interfering with sidenote. Also, for the default note, as I was saying, I'll try to add the possibility to delete/rename it in a future iteration of sidenote but there will be a lot of work involved... (Version 1.7.1)
| Aug 10 2006 |
STIKE Yep, I excluded Sidenote. It works now! The Theme as well as the icon set is "Gershwix" 2.3.2 And about the rename... oops. I didnt think it is that much work. But that feature would be greatly appreciated! :-) (Version 1.7.1)

IAMDORIAN I echo these other opinions. SideNote is an essential research tool, and has few shortcomings. It does seem to handle larger files (images and such, and I do mean LARGE) with difficulty, but it is a great too...and FREE, I might add! A few things I'd like to see added would be: 1) FIirst and foremost, a simple exprt function. This feature is a serious oversight, but understandable, since this is a copy-paste sort of program. Please...add export capability?! 2) More file formats need to be supported. A pdg conversion capability would be nice, and perhaps indirect links to QT movies, and QTVR so we can at least view proxies. 3) An option added under PErferences (in teh Mac System) to allow for choosing an active corner to bring SideNote forward. Keep up the great work. This is a cinch for contraibution-ware. Let me know whre I can send a few bucks.

GRANTNEUFELD I consider this tool essential for my workstation. I use it for things like tracking my hours while contracting (I don't really need one of those fancy time-tracking applications). I also drop in interesting snippets (like books, bands, movies to check out) while reading stuff on the web. It's also handy for those doing the "Getting Things Done" (GTD) style of personal time management. A very convenient spot for all of those lists. Personally, I don't bother with the mouse-based activation. I set it to open/close using the F16 key, and checked the "Open only with hotkeys" and "Close only with hotkeys" checkboxes in the preferences. That way, it never accidently pops up. Having the option to set a hot-corner (like Exposé and the Screensaver) instead of along the side of the monitor might get me to use mouse activation again. (Version 1.7)

BORDERLANDCROSS Simply the best note program available. I am a note program junkie. I have tried everyone I could find. Sidenote is there when you want to take a note and out of site when you don't need it thanks to the hot key activation. There is no need to save since it does it automatically. Notes can be organized, formated, printed, image files and pdfs can be placed in the note, fonts and colors applied.... It is small, clean and works flawlessly on 10.4.4. Great for my 15 inch Powerbook since it does not hog up valuable screen space. Oh, did you notice that it is FREE!!!! (Version 1.7)

For an application to sit on the side, it had to be simple and elegant in appearance and Sidenote is certainly that. I love the buttons and the pop-menu unlike some other comments. I love dragging a picture into it and I would love it even better if when I dragged a pic out it did not convert it to a clipping. Yes there are solutions to this problem but I think a powerful drag and drop should be a priority for this type of software. Among the additional features, I would like to see is when I drag something over to Sidenote, I have an option of which note to place it in. Like the pop-up menu actually lists the notes so that I can place it in the note that it belongs. But excellent, excellent stuff. These suggestions take nothing away from the program. It has quickly become one of my favorite freewares. Developer shows a lot of promise. (Version 1.0)

STARMANTA OK, now that the DMG mounts, here's my two cents: I can't seem to drag and drop links, graphics, etc, onto the sidenote panel. What gives? That would be about that only thing I would use a side-sliding drawer like this for.

STARMANTA I've tried 2 different downloads, bth of which have the same problem: the DMG errors with "no mountable file systems". Other dmg's mount fine on my system, and from the comments I don't see anyone else having this problem. Which strikes me as strange. OS 10.3.8, Mac mini (Version 1.0)

STARMANTA OK, new information from my previous problem: apparently other DMG's do not, in fact, mount fine on my system. I'll try restarting or something. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS I agree with everything Tore said except the tabs. I have a freeware note app called jNotes and it has tabs. The problem with tabs is the more notes you have the more tabs you need and all of the sudden your nice neat note taking window stretches across you screen to accommodate all of you tabs. A list is compact and neat.

ANONYMOUS Yes, but look how Safari handles the tabs, when they are to many for your prefered window width, you find them in a menu to the right.

TORE HELLMAN Smooth! The best things: 1. One can pop up the Sidenote window whenever and immediately and write without leaving the program you currently working in. 2. The window disappear immedialty when not in use. 3. One can also collect or temporary store icons, mp3s, QT-movies and animated gifs. And you can watch/listen 4. Right click on mouse with handy comands Apple´s Stickies are a long way around. 2. Normal window zooming from the lower right corner 3. Tabs instead of popup-menu (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS I like the tool a lot. But a few tips for the developer: - Is it possible to have multiple fields in the drawer, so I can see different notes at once? - Can you make it possible to edit the name you give to a note? Now I can not rename it. - Can you make it possible for pics to adjust to the drawer's size? Now there is only a vertical scroll bar, so it makes it impossible to view the entire pic. Nice product. Hope it stays free! (Version 1.0)

WILLIAM Great freeware note program! I have been looking high and low for something clean and simple like this. Works great. Icons have a nice design. 4 suggestions if you are open to them: 1. The left to right position of the window is great. If you could add the ability to position the window top to bottom as well it would be really great. 2. A key command to open the window with the text input selected and just start typing. 3. A time delay for the close of the window different from the open. (Sometimes I move my mouse to click on a button and it slips off the window closing it unexpectedly. For example a 1sec on open & 5sec on close delay.) 4.Please keep this app freeware. HERPESTHECLOWN This is the best thing since sliced bread. Easy to use, inobtrusive and, best of all, it's free. Thanks for your work. (Version 1.0)

MING LIN This is really an attactive application for people who are finding an easy-to-use text editor. Its "dragndrop" is really great; saving and exporting notes are useful. Btw, I suggest that the pictures we drag in can automatically zoom to fit the pane of the drawer. Thanks for the develper's work on this great tool. Many thanks. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS This also works fine on 10.2.8, by the way. The author said that he'd only been able to *test* it on 10.3.8. That said, I'd like the ability to move the drawer around, please. I'd like to use it instead of Stickies but since I'm already running Xshelf (on my right screen edge) and A-Dock (on my left screen edge), with Sidenote running it inevitably gets in the way of either one of those programs. ANONYMOUS Tell ya what, this is pretty cool... But, my fear is that in the not too distant future it will go "shareware" and/or some other developer will buy it up and then make it shareware, and if that happens that is when I will drop it like a bad habit. It may well be worth money to some/many at this very moment, but if it first comes out as freeware it should stay that way. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS why? if i was going to be 'forced' to keep something free eternally if i released it as free initially, i'd just charge for it to begin with. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS Obviously, no one can 'force' you to keep it free. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS And if you ever plan on making it shareware, it should be shareware now. But to release something as free at first, to get everyone hooked on it, then to release it a few versions later as shareware... feh. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS! It's simple to use, resource friendly, flexible (though I seem unable to use coloured fonts in my notes), and above all, free. Very nice work! (Version 1.0)
