LUKEROHDE  I've always loved my Airfoil software but needed to use it with VLC to play video because of VLCs video delay feature. However the audio and video never quite synced and vlc is a little awkward to use.

I just discovered that Airfoil has a very nice video player, much nicer than VLC and the sync is perfect. I can't believe it took me a year to notice this feature! I thought I better post in case others had overlooked it too.

BLACKSMITH_TB  It will allow you to send any audio to your Airport Express, but it introduces about a two-second lag. For watching DVDs, or avis, etc., VLC solves this problem by allowing you to shift the audio (intended to compensate for bad dubbing, I think, but it works perfectly with Airfoil).

I needed something that would bypass iTunes and stream Pandora to Airport Express. A quick search found this page and these reviews (thanks to THE_BARON whose situation was nearly identical to my own).

5 minutes after downloading Airfoil I was listening to Pandora through my living room stereo and could not be happier.

This app is amazingly simple to set up and use... absolutely no learning curve... just click the speaker icon and listen. If only all programs were this easy.

Airfoil is a brilliant solution for anyone who is looking to stream web radio to Airport Express.... period.

ANDY HEWITT  I've been using this since last year, after I got an Airport Express. Airfoil was a real life saver, or at least a cable saver :-)!

Although it allows playing of audio by wireless, I did find that lip-sync in movies wasn't too brilliant. However, that seems much better since the previous update (3.2.6).

Overall, these are a nice collection of tools that offer functionality missing from the Mac OS. Soundflower is quite impressive too. Movies play very well in the Airfoil movie player, although you can use VLC as well, but it takes a lot of fiddling with the audio delays to sync with the video. They're pretty stable too, and I haven't had any crashes to date (should I have said that?).

This is amongst the shareware apps I have been happy to pay for.

THE_BARON  LOVE this app! I needed a way to stream Pandora radio to all my airport airtunes locations in my house and I couldn't find a way to do it. I was able to stream my itunes music throughout my house, but not Pandora radio. After a few google searches, I came across Airfoil and decided to give it a shot. It took me less than 5 minutes to configure and then it automatically saw all 3 of my stereos throughout the house (front room speakers, living room, and backyard). VERY easy to use...and it works great. No complaints so far.

Also the customer service is top notch. I emailed asking if they were planning an iphone app like the itunes Remote app that would allow me to control Pandora over my airport network and got a response within a couple hours. They were very receptive to the idea and the email was very kind. I highly recommend Rogue Amoeba and Airfoil.

RICHARDM11  Very easy solution for listening to Sirius Radio using Airfoil, with StarPlayr running through my Apple TV to the home stereo. No more hauling the radio from the car to the house and back. I upgraded the Sirius Stream and it's sounds great. You can of course just grab the stream via Safari, I personally prefer using StarPlayr. also very nice with PandoraMan, or if you prefer run it through Safari as well. Very easy setup and use. Also works directly with Radioshift.

Whilst there are some minor issues to be ironed out (Region 2 PAL DVD playback colours), it is a stunning and magnificent piece of software.

CLIXTA  As a user from AirFoil 2.0, I find this update superb! The synchronization of audio among multiple outs is amazing, and much-appreciated. I love not having to re-launch Safari now to hijack the audio.

The app does just what it says, and is a must-have for anyone who uses an Airport Express and wishes to stream audio from apps other than iTunes.

Developer response-time to emails is fantastic, as well.

Q-PPASS  I just got an airport express so I could send music to my stereo in the kitchen and I was wondering how I could send stuff other than itunes. My favorite radio was dropped by Itunes. RealOne had it and Airfoil delivers it to 5 airport express/amps. and syncronized, too.

Having a minor issue with regulating the playback (speeds up, slows down) with all devices going. Not certain as to the cause i.e. broadcast/stream, dsl, airport extreme & expresses and g4 powermac... may be sunspots:(

TEUFEL  How to synchronize Airport Express, Airfoil and VLC for MOVIE PLAYBACK

Preparation:

In VLC (this relates to version 0.84) set up the "Advanced Options" otherwise you won't see the options described in the following.

Actions:

Go to the VLC preferences>Input/Codecs>access modules>file.

Make sure the advanced checkbox is checked so you can see the "caching value in ms" field. Set this in all modules to something larger than the delay you want (3000 should be ok). After making that adjustment, save your preferences.

Now choose a film out of your library and just hit the "F" key during playback until the delay is set to -2650 (beware: this is a MINUS). For some people -2400 will be better, but you should just get to a dialogue scene and watch the lipsync becoming better.

SAVE the settings. The adjustment is now all synched up!

BTW if you are as lazy as I am, set the Default Delay in the VLC preferences>Audio to -2400 (-2650) so it starts this way.

SEMIOTICMONKEY  Good for Audio Output. I'm testing right now and it works with my stereo speakers better than "airtunes" in the Audio Volume Settings. I need to say, tought, that a short delay is at work between your click on a song in iTunes and the audio output.

In no way usable with Video Files (in every form). Its delay is quite evident (about 5 seconds) and make this puppy unusable.

All in all far away from perfect but quite usable right now if you don't worry the delay and don't have plans to use it with video.

SHATFIELD  I downloaded the program and tried it against 2 airport express units. On my dual 2Ghz G5, it worked flawlessly. The streams started almost immediately and were in sync with each other. I'm not sure how it would work against 3 or more - someone who has that main AE units will have to write a review.

As far as features go, I'm giving it a 4 because it doesn't remember my EQ settings between app launches.

BNOLIN  I'd been waiting for this since they first announced it, and now it's finally here. I downloaded it today, and it's super simple. It's very basic, just select the program and click a button, but it works great. No problems at all.

I'd marry it at $15, at $20 I love it. I think the price goes up to $25 soon, and that's a little high. But if you need to send audio from RealPlayer to an AirportExpress, check this out.

JEREMY  Wow - awesome. I've been waiting to see this in action for a while.

Like all the RA products this is simple and works really well.

The local & remote option is handy to try and work out the audio/video sync - VLC supports the audio offset but it's a real pain as it seems to drift slightly.

I wish there was a way for the software to know what the latency was and (in conjunction with DVD Player etc) compensate

(How would this work... I'm not sure, but I guess it would be possible for it to 'listen' to the remote sound, compare to what it sent and work out the latency, then pass that info on to apps that support a latency adjustment - similar to how some of the active speaker systems configure themselves)
