DRDUL  My wife loves this app! All she wants is a simple Klondike solitaire app. She doesn't need 100 different games or fancy animations. Solitaire XL fits the bill. It looks great, it can be scaled up to a huge size, and it works flawlessly.

The only thing that would be nice to have added to Solitaire XL would be a semi-opaque background, similar to some widgets. As it is, you can choose a solid brushed metal background (gak!), or no background at all. A semi-opaque background would be a nice third choice that would enable you to see apps in the background, but would "mute" their appearance so that it would be easier to see the playing cards (which can sometimes get lost in the background clutter).

SXTYNNMACH1  This is a great, aesthetically pleasing solitaire program. It is very stable, you can select your own custom card backs, and the stacks seem to "hover" over your desktop or working space. Kudos to the developer(s)!

ANONYMOUS  Best looking and user friendly solitaire game that I have played. Wish the game would save your own game scores and list them for multiple users just like Snood does. If this game style was made for other card games also I would be glad to pay for something like this. Just love the graphics and how the cards float above the desktop. Very nice.

NICK  Solitaire XL was a great program for as long as it worked for me: great graphics, novel idea of displaying cards directly over the destop, and stabile, except for occasxionally needing to force quit it. Then suddenly, it stopped working on my Alum Powerbook 1.5 Ghz running Tiger 10.4.1. I'd sure like to have it back again.

PAUL  I really like this. I was searching for some solitaire game because I missed the one I had on Windows, which seems technically better than the others around here. Then I stumbled on this little gem. I like the graphics especially. Bravo.

JEDIK  Good looking and amusing. It requires an Internet connection, since it downloads images from the web to the game. Other than this, and the displaying of ads (as it is shown in the User Agreement), it's a very nice Solitaire game. :)

GORD L.  Great looking - for spyware.

That's some EULA we have to agree to, in order to play a FREE (or is that "free") game of Solitaire.

Shredded game, 'lavacat' plists, crashlogs, et al..

JEDIK  Spyware? In the game's website, there is a Softpedia logo certifing it is spyware free. The agreement is about advertisement (as far as I could understand) and making your highscore available online, if *you* choose so in the preferences. I think one should provide any proofs before saying something like this.

BTW, I am not affiliate in anyhow with the game's developer.

GORD L.  (Spyware? In the game's website, there is a Softpedia logo certifing [certifying?] it is spyware free.)

From Softpedia's page - However, it should be noted that this product will be retested periodically and the award may be withdrawn, so you should check back this page and especially the date of testing shown above.

I find it interesting that I had to 'Copy and Paste' the above passage by viewing the 'Source page', and not DIRECTLY from Softpedia's page - which couldn't be done. Try it in TextEdit!

(The agreement is about advertisement[s?] (as far as I could understand) )

Uh, as far as YOU could 'understand'? Did YOU understand any of the EULA? Yeah, neither did anyone else.

(and making your highscore available online, if *you* choose so in the preferences.)

Couldn't this be done by emailing a PDF to 'prove' your highscore - to their webpage?

Look, some people think that gathering info from ANYBODY'S computer is potential for wrong-doing. If you're not hip to peoples' concern regarding that, then...

(I think one should provide any proofs [proof] before saying something like this [that?].)

Where's your 'proof' that I could be wrong?! Hey, just because we're paranoid, doesn't mean that there isn't anyone out to get us. ;-)

(BTW, I am not affiliate in anyhow with the game's developer.)

Says 'Jedik', whoever that is, wherever he's from. ;-)

Anyway, you are missing the point. This doesn't 'feel' right.

Maybe the nice man is just offering candy, and everyone is watching for poison. But, maybe not.

How many are confused by this strange offering? Why the confusing EULA?

-

Oh, and you said in a follow-up post...

(It requires an Internet connection, since it downloads images from the web to the game.)

Uh, but what does it upload?

(Other than this, and the displaying of ads)

So, it's not 'free'!

(as it is shown in the User Agreement),

Most 'free' games say in the README, "have fun, good luck, if it wrecks your Mac it's not my fault"!

(it's a very nice Solitaire game.)

Like I said, it's easy on the eye - but then all hypnotic devices are.

ANONYMOUS  Funny, we if Softpedia has any authory on testing "spyware" at all. The fact is, they seem to steal content directly from MacUpdate for their Mac software side. Don't believe me? Do some homework and you'll see exact copy/paste descriptions and screenshots that MacUpdate created on their own site. Funny stuff.

AUDUN STEINHOLM  I'm the developer. This is not spyware. I do get a little demotivated when such allegations come up when all I try to do is make a great game for Mac OS X.

There are two reasons why the game contacts the internet.

First there is the online high score list. This is a normal web page that can be viewed at http://lavacat.com:8080/hs3.html

This page includes ads because I was hoping that I could get a little income for what has been, believe it or not, quite a lot of work. The income from these ads has turned out to be minimal, but that's another story.

The second is a product news download from lavacat.com that is downloaded when you quit the game. This is also a normal web page and can be viewed at http://lavacat.com/gbm2.html

This is to give myself an opportunity to advertise for future products that may or may not be freeware. I don't think this is too much to ask for a quality freeware game.

The EULA is necessary because the game uses the internet in this manner. There would a lot more complains about possible spyware if the game contacted lavacat.com without telling about it first.

I'm sorry if the EULA is confusing. I tried to make it easily understandable, but English is my second language, so maybe that's a reason why it gets confusing.

Anyway, I hope this clears things up a little for those of you who might be suspicious.

DEGGY  Best implimentation of solitaire I have ever tried. Having the cards floating on the desktop is so cool. The animation is also nice, and uses alot less processor power than the other 3d one (forgot its name) although that one has lots of other games in it. But for someone who only plays Klondike this really rocks
