153957PHOTOGRAPHY  It works.

But only after I enabled 'Two finger scrolling' in the Keyboard & Mouse preferences, which wasnt a very obvious requirement.. that could have been made more clear.

Other then that it works great :)

BOUSOZOKU  Version 0.32 has given back the two finger scrolling, which hasn't worked since Tiger. It still seems a bit jerky but that is probably due to Leopard as everything seems to work poorly.

TRAY STEEL  iScroll 0.29 works on Leopard but has a small bug of not saving your settings upon reboot. To get round this you can manually edit the default settings file /Library/Preferences/name.razzfazz.driver.iScroll2 using texteditor/BBEdit to reflect the settings you want.

RATTUS  WARNING: this software made my iBook G4 (mid 2004 model) kernel panic on startup after installation.

I was able to fix it by starting up in Safe Boot Mode (hold shift) and removing the following files:

/Library/PreferencePanes/iScroll2.prefpane

/Library/Preferences/name.razzfazz.driver.iScroll2.plist

/Library/StartupItems/iScroll2 (folder)

/System/Library/Extensions/iScroll2.kext

This was an unfortunate event and I hope this doesn't happen to others because it sure scared me!

SYHARRIS  iScroll2 has never worked for me, not in OS 10.3.9 nor in OS 10.4.9. This version, like previous ones, is only intermittently responsive and when it does respond it's mostly jerky and twitchy.

I've tried adjusting the settings every which way but just can't get smooth, responsive scrolling.

My Powerbook was built in 2004 so it should be compatible with iScroll2.

Those who have been successful using iScroll2 must be truly blessed; for me it's been a totally exasperating experience.....sigh.....

ARVIDTP  I love this trackpad driver - been using since it came out. iScroll2 is fantastic and i get frustrated on mac laptops that dont have it - however I urge the developer to go back to whatever circular scrolling method was used in 0.25, because no matter what I do I cannot get circular scrolling in version 0.26 to be as sensitive and usable as in 0.25 (on an Alumn. Powerbook G4 15" 1.25GHz). It is just way to jumpy and fast in 0.26...

BRIANG4  For the iScroll2 ver. 06, once you install the main program, and update with the 0.26 install, use the settings posted previously. Then REMEMBER to experiment with your trackpad and put a bit of "pressure" on the pad with your two fingers, going slowly. Give the G4 time to process the scrolling. Do not be in hurry and expect it to work like you had a newer mac with factory two-finger trackpad scrolling.

This technique worked for me like a charm once I decided to be patient with my fingers on the pad and pressed down a bit with both fingers simultaneously.

JRC!  I loved version 0.25e so much that I donated. Better than uControl and Sidetrack.

But I just tried 0.26 and I couldn't get it to work like I wanted, i.e. sensitive enough to do "small", fine scrolling, but enough acceleration to scroll through large documents. I gave up in frustration, uninstalled, and went back to 0.25e. Smooth as butter!

I recommend installing 0.25e, instead of 0.26.

BTW, would be nice to be able to map modifier keys, e.g. Control-scrollwheel, to commands in specific applications.

MBRADSHA  I too have been using this app for almost two years and it's great. I do think that the default settings may not be the best ones. I only use the Vertical 2 finger scroll and Two-finger click for a Right Mouse Button.

Here is the settings that work best for me; with a little tinkering one can find the right settings.

Vertical scrolling Sensitivity: Highest

Speed: Fastest

Ignore weaker axis is checked

Scroll resolution: second tick mark from Low

Maximum event rate: Highest

On the developer's website, there is more information about specific settings in Firefox's config panel which can be adjusted for better browsing using the iscroll2.

Also, it's recommended that "Use smooth scrolling" is turned off in the Apple "Appearance" system preferences if using iscroll2.

MIKE666  I've been using it for about 2 years and have very smooth and responsive vertical and horizontal scrolling - don't use the circular scrolling. It did take while to find the optimal settings so it sounds like you just need to play with it a little more, Herr Rex. My settings are: Sensitivity - 1 mark below highest, Speed - 2 marks below fastest, Resolution - 2 marks above lowest and Maximum Event Rate at the highest.

WHYATT THRASH  Awesome! I tried Sidetrack before, and it's not a bad app but it's 15$... :) This one does the same, and more, and it's free! It also contains some extra configuration options for the normal "tap" function, that I had to disable before due to it's ridiculous sensitivity. Now I can finally enable it again!

(Only gets a "four" in stability because I haven't tried it out much, so I can't be sure it's really stable.)

Another application that should have been included in the OS, but I understand that Apple doesn't, to sell more new Macs... :)

ANONYMOUS  I, too, experienced the same error(17535) when attempting to install iScroll using either Firefox or Camino, but had no problem when using Safari or Opera.

iScroll is quite jerky and twitchy; I just can't get it to scroll smoothly at all. This app definitely needs more work.

Side Track, however, is smooth as silk; it works much better than iScroll. However, Side Track offers no circular scrolling and costs $15.

TROY  (15" 1.25 GHz 512MB RAM) I am quite happy with this product. Works fine with me. Default settings were too fast, and tended to ask the GPU to scroll an image faster than it could be processed. I fixed that problem by turning down both the sensitivity and the speed, and as my preference, I disabled the circular scrolling.

As an added bonus, the ctrl-click function (two fingers on the scroll pad and click the "mouse" button) works superbly. This was a wonderful add-on for those of us who always want to "keep up with the Joneses" in technology. And for those of us afraid to mess up their software or hardware, uninstalling is as simple as the click of one button.

Scrolling through web pages has never been so simple on a Powerbook, and single-handed ctrl-clicking is very smooth.

HTTP://OSGAMES.NET  Another feature locked away by Apple.

I'm sick and tired of these lockdowns. They took expanded desktop and two finger-trackpad aay from me. I've taken them both back.

Unfortunately, the stability of this little snippety is questionable.

Scrolling suddenly seemed to fail, and I attempted to adjust it in the Preference Panel.

After moving the Sensitivity and Speed sliders a bit, my Kernel panicked, and I feel it's necessary to report.

Nonetheless, an awsome produkt.

Easy to use, lots of features, and definantley worth it.

JP  When Maximum event rate is set to High, scrolling is perfect in Safari, but overscrolls in Camino, Firefox and Microsoft Word.

When Maximum event rate is set to one notch below High, scrolling is good (doesn't overshoot) in Camino, Firefox and Microsoft Word, but is slower and more painstaking in Safari.

I've tried adjusting other criteria, none have any significant effect.

Is there a fix to this? I've unchecked Smooth scrolling in Firefox.

I really love this and appreciate the work you've put in, Daniel. Just throwing this out there in case you had a brilliant solution to this.

DANIEL BECKER  Regarding Tiger compatibility:

There is an issue with iScoll2Daemon (which manages the driver's settings) and Tiger. If the daemon is started too early on in the boot process, it will cause a kernel panic in IOHIDSystem.kext.

Please note that this is not even related to the iScroll2 kernel extension at all - the kext seems to work just fine on Tiger, but without the daemon, settings won't persist across reboots or user switching.

As it stands right now, I recommend you only install iScroll2 versions up to 0.24 on Tiger if you know what you're doing and know what to do in case things go wrong (i.e. safe boot).

My copy of Tiger finally arrived the other day, so I hope to be able to look into this matter shortly.

Thanks for your patience and sorry for any inconvenience caused,

Daniel

DANIEL BECKER  Hi all,

just a few words regarding the issues with 0.22:

a) Why are the checkboxes for linear scrolling are not enabled?

If you have a look at the website, you'll find that this is intentional, as you're supposed to make those changes in the Keyboard & Mouse pref pane (trackpad tab), not the iScroll2 one. (The "Please modify this val" string is a bug, but doesn't affect functionality.)

b) Why don't the settings persist across reboots / user switching / ...?

This seems to be because, for some reason, the iScroll2Daemon, which is responsible for managing the per-user settings, either fails to launch (via the iScroll2 StartupItem) or just crashes on Tiger, for reasons I don't know. If anybody has any idea where the problem might be, let me know. It seems to work just fine on Panther. And since my copy of Tiger still hasn't arrived (it's in the May ADC mailing), I am currently unable to investigate this. Again, if anyone has any hints or ideas as to what might be the issue here, do let me know so I can fix it. Until then, you can change any one setting in the iScroll2 pref pane after each reboot to load all settings to the driver.

Sorry for the inconvenience,

Daniel

DANIEL BECKER  Making the settings stick is not that hard in itself - after all, it already works just fine on Panther. The problem is that a) the mechanism used to implement this (iScroll2Daemon) seems to have some issues on Tiger (and on Tiger only), and b) that I'm still waiting for my copy of Tiger (via ADC). And without Tiger, debugging Tiger-specific problems is kinda hard for me.

ANONYMOUS  After much troubleshooting and grief, installation of this program, in both versions .21 and .22, seems to have prevented my computer from booting up upon restart. As far as I can tell, it is a problem with the kext because when it is removed the problem goes away. I was also unable to transfer the kext file from one drive to another without the drive where it is installed freezing on me. I am running a 1.3gig powerbook g4 on OS 10.3.9. However, something certainly seems to be wrong here. Given that it doesn't seem to be a widespread problem (at least I didn't receive other such reports so far), I wonder what's causing this. KENNEDY BRANDT  MAJOR improvements over 0.21. Thank you! It's usable again, and one of the most highly valued installations on my PowerBook...

...but after multiple reinstalls and restarts, two oddities remain.

1.) The first checkbox under Vertical Scrolling is checked but greyed out (unselectable) and reads "Please modify this val".

2a.) I cannot enable Horizontal Scrolling within the iScroll2 pref pane. The "Enable" checkbox is greyed out and in a non-selected state.

2b.) If I select "Allow Horizontal Scrolling" in the Keyboard & Mouse pref pane, then the first checkbox under Horizontal Scrolling in iScroll2 also becomes checked, greyed out, reads "Please modify this val," and suddenly Circular Scrolling is enabled (I never use Circular Scrolling, and have never enabled it myself.)

DANIEL BECKER  Both these checkboxes should actually always read "Enabled". The "Please modify this val" is just due to my misunderstanding the meaning of the "Alt. Title" property for checkboxes. This does not have any impact on functionality, though.

As for the checkboxes not being enabled, this is because as of 0.20 and up, you're once again supposed to use the checkboxes found in the "Keyboard & Mouse" pref pane to enable scrolling in general and horizontal scrolling. If you don't have those, please apply the 10.3.9 Combo Updater.

None of this should affect circular scrolling, though, unless circular is enabled in the pref pane.

ANONYMOUS  I love this app. One thing I have discovered is that your cursor (arrow) should be inside the area you want to scroll. i.e. if it is in the dock you can't scroll. With "ignore weaker axis" it now even allows me to have three fingers on the pad and still scroll. Actually that seems to work better than two, and the fingers don't have to be so critically aligned.

KENNEDY BRANDT  Reverting to 0.19 after my next restart. (Already had to restart and reinstall to get it running as well as it is now, which isn't well at all.)

I loved it before, all the way back to 0.7, but 0.21 is virtually unusable for me under 10.3.9 (PB 15" 1.25GHz). My complaints:

1.) Terrible overscroll. Renders precision scrolling impossible, especially in Finder windows.

2.) Horizontal scrolling triggers on a whim in bi-directionally scrollable Finder windows, even with the difficulty of triggering horizontal scrolling set to maximum.

3.) I don't like having the feature set split up between two different pref panes. Not sure if this is intended to be more consistent with Apple's approach or what, but it just means more effort with no clear gain for me.

Looking forward to future spins, but taking a pass on 0.21.

GREG  The scrolling behavior seems very different in 10.4 as compared to 10.3.8.

(I don't recall the version number I was using in 10.3.8).

Scrolling is much faster, really quite too fast and feels too responsive to even minor brushes with the fingertips.

When I stop moving the mouse, the scrollbar continues to move, leading to overscroll. Ack ... I hate overscroll.

Still a great utility.

Now all we need is the ability to fine tune both speed and overscroll.

ROBERTO AVANZI  With 0.20 scrolling speed is slower by default, BUT there is no way to return to the higher speed enjoyed with versions up to 0.19. I like to use the circular scrolling for fast scroll and the linear scrolling for finer scrolling. Now everything is slower and thus the current version (0.24) is unuseable. The "event speed" setting seems to do nothing and in Safari (I am using OS X 10.3.9 with Safari 1.3) scrolling speed seems CONSTANT, regardless of the settings. This is weird.

That's why I am still using 0.19. 0.24 is next to useless at the moment.

First to enable it you have to go on the keyboard&mouse pref panel, as mentioned.

Second is that if from the iscroll pref panel you enable the "turn off linear scrolling" (under the circular scrolling tab) then iscroll does not work. I guess there is a conflict with the similar option on the keyboard&mouse pref panel "allow horizontal scrolling". So the bottom line is that if you want or you don't want horizontal scrolling also then enable it or disable it from the keyboard&mouse pref panel and not the iscrol pref panel.

MICHAEL  I waited for the revisions to slow down a little before trying iScroll2 out. So far it works just as advertised. The first time I tried it out, I thought it was having some problems scrolling. It turns out that my problem was due to Firefox's custom mousewheel settings (accessible in the about:config page). Once I figured out why my Firefox scrolling was so erratic, I've been using iScroll2 fulltime. I was trying out SideTrack before, but iScroll 2 has all the functionality that I need (trackpad scrolling and simulating a right-click) and it's free. This is a must for newer iBook G4 owners.

ANONYMOUS  iScroll is a great application that brings two-finger scrolling to older machines. However, there is one feature present in the new PowerBooks that iScroll still lacks. With the new PowerBooks, it doesn't matter how your fingers are oriented — horizontally, vertically, or at any angle — the PowerBooks will still scroll appropriately. iScroll does not yet support this neat feature, but I hope they soon will.

ROBERTO AVANZI  The trackpad hardware in the new powerbooks is different, and you can even place the fingers vertically in order to do scrolling - just because the hardware detects the two fingers even in that case.

Daniel's driver is for the older Synaptics hardware, that does not detect the two fingers as separated if their "vertical" images overlap too much. however, I have no problems with scrolling even placing the fingers at a steep diagonal (as also Daniel Becker's mentioned).

Do others find that 0.18 works for them? Perhaps I need to upgrade the OS to 10.3.8.

DANIEL BECKER  It just occured to me that your issue is likely to be caused by 10.3.7's not setting the "TrackpadScroll" property in combination with the driver defaulting to the behavior of Apple's original driver (i.e. no scrolling) in its absence. I'll see what I can do about that for the next release.

KENNEDY BRANDT  Love it -- have loved it since version 0.7...

...but just noticed that when scrolling down in Safari, scrolling will suddenly halt when certain content meets the mouse pointer's position. For example, go to http://www.appleinsider.com/, and scroll down across the "Ads by Google..." insert. Does vertical scrolling halt as soon as this ad area climbs up to the mouse pointer's position? It does for me.

Conversely, if the mouse pointer is far enough to the side that this content scrolls up past it, without passing under the pointer, vertical scrolling continues uninterrupted.

Still love it, though.

DANIEL BECKER  Try the same with a normal scroll wheel mouse, and you should get the exact same behavior. I think this happens when the cursor is over a plugin - it's then up to the plugin to handle the scroll events, not Safari. Therefore, this is not something I can fix in iScroll2.

DANIEL BECKER  This is a "feature" of FireFox - it treats horizontal scrolling as forward/back by default. As a workaround, either disable horizontal scrolling, or disable this "feature" in FireFox, like this:

- go to about:config (type it in address field)

- change mousewheel.horizscroll.withnokey.action to 0

- change mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines to false

To get faster scrolling, you can also play around with the values for mousewheel.horizscroll.withnokey.numlines and mousewheel.withnokey.numlines until you get satisfactory results.

To verify you have the most recent driver version installed, open a terminal window and type "kextstat | grep iScroll2", and the resulting line of text should include the version of the driver. To avoid confusion, I'll also bump the version number for the pref pane to 0.17.

ROBERTO AVANZI  Maybe I figured out what happens with 0.16.

I reported already that sometimes the scrolling options do not work properly, and it stops scrolling. I believe that the driver is "overreacting" to the "Ignore accidental trackpad input" setting: if it is set, and the fingers are not perfectly adherent to the trackpad surface, it just stops, whereas if the setting is off, it works perfectly. I believe that, when scrolling, the driver should be a "bit" more flexible.

ANONYMOUS  Even with "Sensitivity threshold" set to the most sensitive ("Easier to trigger") iScroll2 does not seem to work very well when moving your fingers at a slow speed. It will not move at all, then move slightly, then not move at all, etc. The net result is I can't scroll with any fineness and so this strictly does rapid scrolling which to my mind makes this a lot less useful than it could be. Anyone else seeing this? Is this by design? Also, circular scrolling just does not work well no matter how I try to do it (and yes, I had linear scrolling disabled). I wish it did as I think that would be pretty cool.

ROBERTO AVANZI  The problem persists independently from the settings. I usually have all scrolling modes on, with the threshold for circular scrolling lower than that for Y and X scrolling (X being the highest),

If the parameters work for 0.14 and 0.15, I get this odd behaviour under 0.16. I start moving in circles and every now and then scrolling gets stuck and it does not scroll any longer until I click or do other movements, after removing the fingers from the trackpad. it does not work too well either when the fingers are too close (no problem with 0.14 and 0.15)

BRUCE T  I'm checking this out after using Sidetrack for a while (and getting my money's worth–no complaints).

iScroll is new and getting better. I find two-fingers a little uncomfortable, but I think I just realized that you can use three or whatever, so I don't have to be so delicate. That's interesting and may be helpful.

The developer was very helpful with my installation problems. I had to unistall Fingamidi, not just Sidetrack. I appreciate that service. (I wish there was a way to switch between dirvers without uninstalling them.)

The preferences aren't the clearest: I just figured from the comment below that you could map a right-click to the normal laptop button (not a trackpad tap) when you have two fingers on the pad. That's very cool indeed. May sell me over from Sidetrack which I liked.

More power to creative developers. I'd be willing to pay for this.

PAUL  Two finger scrolling can now be done with the fingers placed anywhere on the trackpad. Before the fingers had to be placed together along the x-axis: uncomfortable. Nice! Improvements every couple of days!

ERIC SHEPHERD  This is amazing! Works much better than SideTrack; the two-finger scrolling is vastly easier to use than having to hit a "sweet spot" along the edges of your trackpad. And the two-fingers resting on the trackpad while clicking to get a right-click is incredibly handy. A must have for any PowerBook user with a compatible trackpad.

CPLEE  Does allow me to uncheck the "Enable vertical scrolling" or "Enable horizontal scrolling".

When I tried to uncheck, I got a popup window that says:

Plese use the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane to make this change.

Apple's Keyboard & Mouse preference pane assumes it is the only place where this settings can be changed, and will overwrite any changes made elsewhere.

What's happening???

DANIEL BECKER  What it says - Keyboard & Mouse blindly overwrites the TrackpadScroll and TrackpadHorizScroll IORegistry properties, and doesn't recognize if anyone else changes them. I might go back to using different property names in the future, such as to avoid conflict with the K&M panel.

DEKKARD  Fan-Freekin-tastic! No disrespect, but i tried sidetrack, and got rid of it after 3 days, and made do with the arrow keys. Just installed v.11 on an 1.33mhz ibook. The app is very accurate and very smooth. feels like a natural extension. It is virtually instinctive after 5 minutes use. Excellent job.

ARVIDTP  really great. The two fingered right click take a bit of practice! And if you lift one finger to stop scrolling, it takes the software a bit of time to realize you are no longer scrolling, and continues scrolling for 1/2 second. But awesome nonetheless. Was using uControl, but this is better: no need to hold a modifier all the time to scroll and the kext for uControl may have been contributing to stability issues on my powerbook.

DANIEL BECKER  The hardware should definitely support scrolling. Are you sure no other alternative trackpad driver (e.g. SideTrack) is loaded when you try to install? If so, please check Console.app for output from the installer - this usually tells you exactly why it won't let you install.

DANIEL BECKER  Please try version 0.11. I modified the installer so as to give you a more accurate error message when it decides your system is not supported.

STEVE  On a 12-inch PowerBook G4/1.33 with Mac OS X 10.3.7 iScroll 2 0.9 works like poetry. I love it, it works supremely better that the first version which was skittish. I like it a lot and it has made using the PowerBook I adore even more of a pleasure. To the developer: expect a PayPal payment from me!
