JEREMIAHTWICE I don't know...I wanted to like this product as it just seems so cool. And it is a very polished product, perfect for the geek who loves his RSS. I just feel it could be easier to use. I want to be able to choose from a nice list of RSS feeds like those shown in the screenshot. So, I think it is a very nice piece of software--but perhaps a little more than I personally was looking for. (Version 1.11.6)

JACKER Great application now as it turned out with this version. Everything work like a charm. Gmail is also working again, how cool is that!! Open Gmail in you Safari and click the RSS icon in the link bar, and you're done!. Now all my information is tight together, mail and news. It saving so much RAM and CPU, it is untrue!! Such a great economic/ergonomic brilliance. Stability: 5/5 (fast reply and improvements along, but testing should be done beforehand!!) Features: 4/5 (Because there is still potential with global shortcuts, and a key-click on menu-bar icon combination) I hope these will be incorporated soon! (Version 1.11.2)

RI This app is a gem for free rss feeds. If you need to authorize RSS feeds with a password it does not work well. It is not able to handle more than 2 password - rss and it mixed up the URL stored in the keychain (in my case it changed http:// to https:/// (3x"/") I hope the author will fix that. otherwise great work! BUBBAMAC This version is much better. Still, if I have Growl setup to make feed updates sticky if idle and leave the computer for 6 hrs or so, if a feed has been updated multiple times (say Slashdot, it was updated every 30 minutes and has a new article, then updated again 30 minutes later with 2 new articles), for each feed update I have multiple sticky windows for each feed when I come back. Thanks to the author for all the bug fixes in this version! (Version 1.10.1)

BUBBAMAC Hasn't been right for me since 1.8.3, but even then, it wasn't perfect. Everytime it restarts it thinks all items are new, when in reality, they are not. I leave the Growl notifications to not be sticky, but go sticky when idle for 30 secs. I come back and my screen is full of notifications; not one for each feed updated, but if feeds were updated multiple times, then I may have several notifications. (Version 1.10)

E_COMMERCE Why does this have to be so convenient when it's so damn unreliable? It only checks a few feeds consistently; most of the time I have to force an "Update All" and 75% of my feeds will suddenly show hours of missed updates. Some feeds STILL will not updates. Occasionally a feed will show someone ELSE'S updates. Sometimes a feed will show several lines of HTML gobbletygook instead of the headline (most often on Engadget or Joystiq - both part of AOL's Weblogs Inc). And then there's the times it crashes and just vanishes. YES, I've deleted all of my settings who knows how many times, and recreating my list of feeds is a pain in the ass. My logs are chock full of such informative lines as: 2007-02-14 13:44:57.533 RSS Menu[8257] errors: http://www.osxbook.com/blog/feed/atom/ 2007-02-14 13:45:05.572 RSS Menu[8257] errors: http://www.robservatory.com/feed/atom/ 2007-02-14 13:46:34.466 RSS Menu[8257] errors: http://webkit.opendarwin.org/blog/?feed=atom 2007-02-14 13:46:43.882 RSS Menu[8257] errors: http://www.schwieb.com/blog/feed/ 2007-02-14 13:47:24.053 RSS Menu[8257] errors: http://www.tivoblog.com/feed/atom/ 2007-02-14 13:47:28.255 RSS Menu[8257] errors: http://www.palminfocenter.com/feed.xml 2007-02-14 13:47:32.184 RSS Menu[8257] errors: http://www.everythingtreo.com/index2.php?option=com_rss&no_html=1 2007-02-14 13:47:33.825 RSS Menu[8257] errors: http://www.georgeandtif.com/feed/ What's the error? Who knows! Furthermore, while certain feeds cause them most often, it DOES manage to update them correctly on occasion, so I know the feed as a whole works. What good is a program that is supposed to notify you of updated sites when it can't even do that properly? I don't like giving space to a dock icon, but I'm going back to NetNewsWire Lite - I've given this program second chances every version since 1.0. The concept is excellent - the execution of it has always left much to be desired. (Version 1.9.5)

MDMUNOZ Great app. I always wanted a simple feed reader that just opened the page instead of making me click through short summaries with links. RSS Menu does me one better by showing updates and being accessible from startup, without having to fire up a browser or reader just to check for updates. Great work. The only problem I've encountered is that podcasts simply open in my browser instead of Quicktime/iTunes. Not that it's a big deal. I just watch the stuff in-browser. (Version 1.9.3)

THEBRIX2008 RSS menu would be excellent - at face value, it is better than any of the Dashboard RSS readers - if only it were stable! The process has to be killed depressingly often (spinning beachball and 100% CPU usage), and this problem has gone back a long way: I stopped using the application at about 1.3.x, came back at 1.7.2 and was sorry to see it again. It is frustratingly hard to pin down a scenario where the problem occurs, but I have over 20 feeds updating every 30 minutes and 2 feeds every 10 minutes. Is there a way to delete an individual feed once it's been imported? ANONYMOUS Custom icon support is broken in 1.4.2. The "badge" simply consists of showing a colored outline around the menu icon (which isn't very attractive, to be honest). You also may want to add checks to make sure custom icons were loaded properly, as I get a blank menu icon when it loads now - didn't even realize it had launched until I happened to click an empty spot on the menubar. Any chance we could see the custom icon support fixed, and just choose a different icon that would overlay the old icon when new articles show up? After all, with custom icon support people could design any type of overlay they want, whether it's a little Mail-style red starburst or a complete replacement (black icon turns blue, etc).

ANONYMOUS I've rediscovered how great RSS Menu is, after suffering through Safari's dog slow RSS for many months. A couple of minor feature requests: - Add an option for the menu bar icon to change to a different one when there are new articles available. I don't have space for the actual number (1024X768 screen doesn't leave much room), but I'd like a visual reminder, for instance, the icon changing from black to blue. - Continue improving the RSS feed parsing. I still get some feeds that cannot be read, or spontaneously disappear. For instance, Mac OS X Hints disappeared today, after working fine yesterday. Engadget (and all of "Weblogs Inc", damn them) still uses some awful HTML feeds that gum up the summaries. Otherwise, I'm loving using RSS Menu again. With the multithreading introduced after 1.3, it's very, very fast. (Version 1.3.3)

ANONYMOUS ok, this new version (1.3.2) is better - it actually updates feeds correctly. But the feed preferences window still has big problems. Dragging feeds into folders doesn't have the effect one would expect, but rather deletes the feed. Re-importing in an exported list of feeds doesn't work at all, so now I have to re-enter everything from scratch. It's still got some serious bugs, but if they get fixed, it would be worth paying for. (Version 1.3.2)

ANONYMOUS I love the idea, but the implementation is abysmal. Nearly three-fourths of the time I click RSS Menu, it beachballs because it's busy doing *something*. I only have about 30 RSS feeds, all set on the default half-hour update interval. I clicked the menu a bit ago, and the menu didn't drop down for 15 MINUTES. Then when I made one selection, it closed and beachballed again for 2 MINUTES. To the developer, PLEASE learn what multithreading is and how to do it. Semaphores and locks and such are NOT hard. It is relatively simple to fire off a new thread that connects to the server, collects the data, and then feeds it into the GUI (if the GUI is being used at the time, it defers until the GUI thread is ready). The GUI should exist in the main thread and simply spawn a new thread for each feed that's updating. That way the GUI is *always* responsive, and your updates will happen a LOT faster. Instead of 29 feed updates being stalled because one server missed a packet or is timing out, everything else just works. While normally opening a couple dozen network connections is a no-no in TCP, since these are all to different servers it's ENCOURAGED. (Version 1.2.1)

ANONYMOUS - Notification bezel started appearing even though it's supposed to be off. Trashing prefs did not help. - Menu and preferences window becomes completely unresponsive when updating feeds. - After the menu is opened/closed or preferences dialog is opened, a "command-Q" keystroke quits RSS Menu. - Still needs the ability to either add dividers or folders; preferably both. Interface still needs some polish and better organization and help. Version 1.1.1 is still deleting feeds - MacRumors and Treonauts both vanished today. | Mar 4 2005 |
THE VALRUS When I try to add the feed with URL 'http://daringfireball.net/feeds/rss/********' (where the ******** is some numbers and letters which I can't reveal due to their having been obtained through a subscription), RSS Menu rejects it, telling me the URL must begin with 'http://' or 'https://'. What gives? It's a shame, because I'm dying to start using this exclusively for my RSS needs. So thanks for the speedy update; I'll be eagerly awaiting the next one since it seems the last one fixed most of the issues brought up here. Applause for the responsive developer! Now fix your program! ;) (Version 1.0.2)

WHYTOI Just perfect for my RSS needs. I've dumped my standalone RSS reader for this. So much more convenient. Apart from more features that'll come post v1.0. This present version appeared to be less stable than I'd like. In a few hours of use, it has crashed out twice. Also, within the Preferences add feed window, for a period the edit, +, - buttons disappeared. No idea what that was about. Pls get this app the stability it needs ASAP. (Version 1.0.1)

ANONYMOUS Some suggestions? You need to fix the menubar icon when it's refreshing feeds. It's quite annoying seeing it flash back and forth the way it does, especially if you have several RSS feeds. Perhaps if you made it look like the icon, but have a green background (instead of blue... perhaps color can be customized) when everything is fetched, and a red one when it's downloading data... the visual cues would be a great addition... :) It would also be nice to be able to customize the size of the menubar icon... some of us have little real estate... ;) (Version 1.0.1)

ANONYMOUS The Import feature is nice, however after quitting all the imported feeds are lost. (Version 1.0.1)

ANONYMOUS Excellent update, and very rapid response to feedback! I'm very impressed! - The change to not allow duplicate feeds is unfortunate. For instance, I might have MacUpdate both in a "Mac Sites" group and in a "Constantly Updated" group. - The menu is *very* flickery when updating. Put 30 feeds on there, then launch RSS Menu and watch it go nuts. Otherwise, I'm still amazed to see such progress in a couple of days, especially the OPML support. Bravo! (Version 1.0.1)

NO MORE W This has started off well... Would be nice if a new feed could be added directly from the main menu without having to go to the preferences. One bug I have found... I have some Japanese feeds which it reads but the characters are totally messed up. (Version 1.0)

MICHAEL S Great little app that works well and doesn't try to do too much. Everything I need to keep updated on the latest news from the web. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS This looks excellent - handled most feeds I threw at it, and will be a real timesaver. A few bugs to report and requests to make: - "+" does not appear to work for adding new feeds on first run (maybe subsequent runs) - Several feeds don't work (MacCentral, MacDailyNews, Fink Project Status) - Allow import of opml files to add all feeds in one shot - Only use "spinning clock" animation for network access (which can be slow), not for "mark as read", which just causes flicker - Folders and menu dividers (necessary for handling lots of feeds - Preferences for display of new items (checkmark, in color, bold, etc) - Swap positions of "Update Now" (used frequently) and "About" (not) - Menu icon? Perhaps a small black "RSS" badge similar to the application icon? Please keep it black to match the other menus. Thanks a lot! Excellent program! (Version 1.0)

THEBRIX After the glitch with adding feeds (see Troubleshooting) was worked round this turns out to be a excellent application. It takes up almost no permanent screen space and is actually far simpler to work with than RSS "scrollers" such as NewsTicker; all items in a feed are visible at once from the menu and a quick look at the menu bar is enough to find out whether there are new items or not. A trio of requests: OPML import, which would save a lot of cut and pasting, an option to only view the last N received feed items (some feeds, such as Salon, pile up dozens of unexpired items, which makes the menu rather unwieldy) and Growl notification (the built-in notification looks rather like Growl but isn't it). (Version 1.0b2)

THEBRIX I hadn't installed the application before and found that, on first run, it wasn't possible to enter any feeds (the "+" button did nothing). Closing the application and starting it again fixed the problem ... (Version 1.0b2)

ANONYMOUS Absolutely brilliant! This app is simple, responsive, checks on schedule and works exactly as advertised. A small RSS in the taskbar that takes just one click to drop down is so much more functional than having to open a different all to check your feeds. The only thing I'd like to see is a 'check feeds now' menu item, and a reversal of the check marks on the entry list - when I've read something I'm used to seeing it checked off, not checked if I haven't read it, though this IS more the way a mail app lists items! :-) Running OS X 10.3.8 with 1 gig of RAM on a 1 gHz iMac flatpanel. Works perfectly! (Version 1.0b2)

JT Sorry, the new version doesn't start---it just puts a spinning beach ball in the menubar. I had to stay with the previous version for now.... Do all previous prefs/plists need to be trashed?

ANONYMOUS Yes, try deleting the preferences file located at ~/Library/Preferences/com.edot-studios.rssmenu (where ~ is your home folder). (Version 1.0b2)

JT Deleting did the trick---but I had to manually copy all of the URLs from the plist text file and rebuild the feed prefs. Thanks for the quick response though. (Version 1.0b2)

ANONYMOUS I was stumped by this, too---solved it by running NetNewsWire, choosing feeds from its menus and doing Get Info on the ones I wanted. Then just copy the URL from NNW's GetInfo panel and paste it into RSS Menu's list. (Version 1.0b2)

ANONYMOUS You can add feeds via the Preferences menu. Click on the + button to add the url of a feed and select a refreshrate. (Version 1.0b2)
