Bummer.

I used to follow this closely but the project appears to be COMPLETELY DEAD as of late 2005. Even the forum went south, and this thing is still awfully feature shy and more flash than function.

For me this is still not all that stable and with no work being done, it isn't going to get better.

I'll stick to Azureus which although a bit bloated, gets the job of downloading done fast.

It has WRONGLY been said Azureus is somehow not free or has advertising!

Asureus 3.x with the VUSE GUI has advertising, but it's ALL still FREE and OPEN SOURCE.

Vuse (zudeo) content may have DRM, but the GUI can be turned off to leave Azureus working and behaving like 2.x versions and all code is still under the GPL and actively developed.

NOTE: I HAVE ZIPPO TO DO WITH THE AZUREUS PROJECT.

I was disturbed when VUSE showed up when i upgraded a few days ago.

I simply found the details in the WIKI, including how to turn Vuse off.

SIGNORE ROSSI  Didn't crash for 3 or 4 nights (and days)! In my configuration it is stable as a rock! And it really works fine. With other clients I often see that u/l and d/l rates decrease (to zero) and only a restart of those programs helps. Tomato Torrent doesn't work with multi file downloads (a 100 files in one torrent) and Azureus is nothing more than a big advertisment show... :-( The only free bittorrent client that works really good for me is Bits on Wheels! I like the statistics and the file view in it!

SMTIPS  Well, it's alright compared to others.

It crashes when you got a lot of files going in it. When you go to stop one file, it stops the one above it, and if you do this a few times in a long list, it just up and crashes. This behavior is very consistent.

Hasn't been updated in a LONG time and needs to be. Could stand to have the ability to download individual files within a torrent, badly needs that feature.

NINJABOY  This app runs for only 20 mins before it freezes. It struggles to cope with 3-4 simultanious downloads.

Freezes require a 'force quit' & restart everytime, meaning I loose my upload credits/ratings etc.

LIQUINAUT  By far the best client out there - it is fast, it has a LOT of features you won't find anywhere else and best of all: it's free! Since it reports all the stats properly to the tracker (at least in my case), Bits of wheels is my first choice when it comes to sharing torrents.

But beware: downloading and uploading can become very addicting, since BoW has by far the most exciting statusbar options I've ever seen (the 3D wheel ist just one of them).

It's just a little feature that I miss within BoW: The possibility to prevent clients with bad hash checks from further uploading - This can lead to quite huge amounts of waste of bandwith and time in worst case...

Therefore BoW gets an overall 5 star rating from me ecxept for stability.

...and a big THANX for developing this program for free - keep up the good work!

MISCHIVO  THANK YOU!

Since I ventured to try this app earlier today, I have deleted both Tomato Torrent and Transmission. Bits has allowed me to finally download files that were sitting idly or with errors on those previous apps for well over a week. Bits on Wheels is now my exclusive bittorrent client; it's fast, it's stable, it's OS native, and it looks nice. Thanks.

One suggestion though: change the image you use for the "screenshot"--it's deceiving. I've previously been dissuaded from trying this app because I was inaccurately led to believe it was some stupid 3D bittorent client that is all about style and not substance. Boy was I wrong, but I now wish that the screenshot was of the actual business end of the app, not just one of its many features.

ANONYMOUS  I'd like to thank everyone who reviewed this app. All those nice comments are really comforting, really. It means I'm not working for nothing.

And for those who complain about the default folder, it will be in the todo list for 1.0.7.

One word about the low ping rate when bow is running. My guess is that you set the upload limit a bit too high, so your upload is saturated and pings take more time to come back. Try reducing the upload and see what happens. (1-2KB might do it).

thanks again to you all ^_^

PASCAL  Is anyone else getting really high network latency when running this app?

If I ping apple.com while BoW is running, my response times are usually ~2000ms. If I quit BoW, they drop off to a more acceptable ~90ms. If I run the 'regular' BitTorrent client (4.1.2), my ping times don't go up much if at all.

I love this app, but that kind of latency makes other network activity a real drag. Developer, any ideas?

BUGRA  I have still hope for this program. Tomato is too simple and Azureus is terrible complicated. For very large files, Azureus is unfortunately the best with the ability of downloading any file with priority management. Apart from that, Azureus has always quicker download rates than any other bittorent program.

But as I said, BoW has got the best interface and still in development.

ANONYMOUS  Thank-you for a very good alternative!

I have had to switch from my standards (azureus and bit torrent) for a number of reasons; regardless I did not have much hope for a while, since, they had performed well until serious flaws revealed themselves, and nothing else seemed to offer good peformance with reasonable options. Until now.

This is the nicest "little" torrent app out there right now.

I suggest people give it a chance and support it's development.

And please, don't demand it become bloatware!

ANONYMOUS  Very nice, but one feature I'd like to see added is the option to automatically move completed downloads to a different folder. Preferably the folder to move to would be settable on a per torrent basis, or perhaps dependent on the kind of download.

Such a feature would allow for automated conversion of downloaded video for the iPod. The program MoviesForMyPod (previously MoviesToGo) has a watch folder option, so I'd want Bits to put completed video downloads into its watch folder, which would result in them then being automatically converted into iPod compatible format.

Azureus does this, of course, but Azureus is so, so painfully slow. Not to mention the incredibly klunky interface. So I'd really like to use Bits on Wheels or Transmission, but neither has this auto-moving capability.

ANONYMOUS  Aside from the feature I mention in my comment above, another thing I'd like to see that Azureus can do (with a plugin) is RSS feed filtering. I.e. you can install a plugin that subscribes to an RSS torrent feed and when a particular torrent matches a search string, it automatically adds the torrent to Azureus' queue. That's a fantastic feature! The problem, of course, is that Azureus is such a dog, and does indeed bring everything else on my computer to a halt.

Some paranoid trackers assume that bow is cheating since HTTP headers like 'Connection: keep-alive' are set. PAUL  This program is amazing. It takes up very little processor time, 40-50MB of RAM when very busy, is very stable, and loves to do what it does.

Very easy to use, simple, intuitive interface. I can stare at the 3D Swarm for hours. It's an interesting thing to watch. Comprehensive and simple (but complete) preferences, including max upload rate, max uploade rate settings for new torrents, max up and down connections, easy file lists, and so on.

This has, with one use, become the only torrent client I'll ever need. Beautiful, stable, simple, light.. this one's a winner. You owe yourself to give it a try if you ever, even ONCE, want to use Bit Torrent.

You definitely can't beat the price.

ANONYMOUS  This program is great! For some reason, it connects to more peers and has faster downloads for me than Azureus does.

The only things better about Azureus than this are

1. Azureus splits up seeding files and downloading files into two windows

2. Azureus has that little config that tells you if your port is open.

SO if you know how to forward ports already or don't need to, and if you don't mind the seeds and downloads in the same window, then Bits on Wheels is your program. :)

ANONYMOUS  While this works very well on Tiger most of the time, it seems to freeze up at random. No data moving, no response to the mouse, and tagged as "Not responding" in the Force Quit Applications dialog. It doesn't happen very often, but seems to be more frequent as you use it more.

WACKYMACS  This is by far the best torrent client I have found for Mac OS X. BitTorrent, the most popular client has less features and uses MORE CPU.

I think that the interface could be improved, it uses a lot of screen space at the moment - But its not a major problem.

This program gives you lots of details on torrent files, such as the pieces completed, files within the torrent, and an interesting "3D Swarm" feature.

The price is right, there are plenty of features, its fast and doesn't use a lot of CPU ! I recommend this to any serious torrent user. Well done to the developer, Keep up this great work!

ANONYMOUS  Interesting, but it seems to have a real problem. Maybe it's just me. I found that torrents would come to perhaps 97% and then die. The upload would keep on going, but the download would drop to nothing.

I don't know if it's a hash failure problem (not sure why it would be-the download is zero, so there's no data coming in so...) or what. I look at the 3D view and 100% of the seeds and all but a couple peers are in the red zone.

If it happened with just one torrent, I could tolerate it. But it's happened with every torrent I've tried.

Oh well, back to Azureus.

KARINA  Awesome client, downloads torrents quick and has a beautiful user interface.

Frequently gets stuck for many hours waiting on the last peice of a torrent. For example my last download sat at 99.9% with 512KB to finish for about 15 hours, I stopped and restarted it a few times over that period, then gave up and used Tomato Torrent to finish up, which took 47seconds.

Once this and the occasional crashes that happen are fixed I'll have no need for a backup client on my system.

many times i use the "update" button to sync my download with the tracker server, but the "remove" button is soooooo close and, in some cases, i push this button and my current selected torrent simply dissapear from the GUI...

maybe a little "are you sure to remove this torrent?" warning window will be great!! ...and we have the opportunity to "cancel"...

LIGHTFOOT  I am -very- happy with how this is coming along. Azureus is good, but it's kinda like the Photoshop of Bittorrent clients. It's very nice to see a less heavyweight alternative.

One thing I'd really like to see is the ability to remove columns, and for it to remember column order changes. It might also be nice to see a column that just has an icon that represents if you are downloading, stopped, seeding, or paused.

I look for this to become the common choice for Mac Bittorrent users.

ANONYMOUS  While the 3D thing is cool and its nice to see another client designed for the mac, this thing needs a bit of work. It doesn't seem that much like a mac app, but more like a recreation of a PC torrent client like azeurus. I think the author needs to take a look at some really maclike apps such as anything from Panic, Apple, Omni etc and get a real mac feel. The least that could be done is to get a matching set of icons that look nice.

And the 3D thing is a really creative feature and I think that should be more the focus of the app. There should be a way to focus on that view and rotate it, change the color scheme, maybe make themes for it somehow etc. I know its not functionally important but its what sets it apart right now from anything else. Also, having pie charts above the filled up 3D boxes is somewhat redundant or otherwise its just not clear as to what the point of each are if they do indicate something different.
