ANTONYH  I got this as a part of the macheist bundle, and I've only just decided to try it. Aside from the amount of information that has to be given to activate it (which others have already commented on), I cannot recommend this application.

It DOES NOT WORK in the United Kingdom. It fails to find my existing auctions. It fails to load the categories from eBay UK.

Deleting the two demo auctions doesn't remove them unless you add a new auction.

The dashboard widget doesn't find my auctions either.

There's no 'plain' template. Believe it or not, I don't like all the 'stationary', I just want to be able to list with plain text, and track my auctions.

Has anyone else had these problems?

M. LUTHER  Don't know why so many people are complaining about this app. It has a decent amount of templates. I pick one for the classification of items I mostly sell and it looks great. I even had someone contact me asking what program I use to create my ads since they look so professional. I believe my auctions are ending higher now than prior to using the program.

I ran into one problem last night where iSale kept getting stuck on "uploading to ebay." I tried numerous fixes, none of which worked. I decided to try to delete some of the photos in my FTP space (only 10MB of space), and now iSale is working flawlessly, so apparently that was full. Too bad the program couldn't have let me know this was the problem, as I wasted 30 minutes troubleshooting that I could have spent posting auctions. Also, sometimes when I click the upload/post button, iSale sits there and fails to upload to ebay, but when I click it a second time it will work.

Overall, I am happy with iSale and am continuing to use it to post my auctions. I would recommend it to anyone interested. The area where iSale saves me the most amount of time is in photo management; resizing and uploading photos to my FTP space -- iSale does it automatically where I had to do it manually before. I hate taking the time to post stuff on ebay, and iSale helps to make the whole process go a little quicker.

JIBBAROO  Doesn't play well with Spaces. Unusable with Safari 4 Final with Leopard. The pages it creates are often very awkward.

BEASTMAN  Got it recently as part of a MacHeist bundle. Tried it and deleted every trace of it from my sysem. It's buggy (from crashes to weird copy paste behaviour), and inflexible. I had trouble getting past a warning (which wasn't really a problem - just telling me about Canadian government possible recalls). No problem with the same warning in GarageSale. Many of the templates are amateurish, and can't be easily edited. GarageSale works much better for me. Will likely never bother with this program again. I'm usually not so harsh, but this software is not for me.

CMFNYC  I like iSale overall. It is feature-rich, easy to use, and deliver good looking eBay auctions. It certainly beats the alternative of crafting sale pages on your own. I cannot speak to other software. I posted three auctions and have bids right away. When I posted similar ones before iSale, some of them went unsold. That's the biggest plus for me. As for what others are saying. For me, I don't mind the badge. I don't mind advertising the product, if it does me a good turn. But I think you should be able to turn it off for those who don't like it.

I do have one big criticism...you cannot edit running auctions. So make sure everything is perfect before posting. The devs should really fix this. All in all, I am happy with the purchase.

MACGEEK19  This app is brimming with potential but has to be the most buggy software I have seen. Constant crashes, selecting auctions sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. This app is awful. I wish I could use it. It just doesnt work.

XPLICIT  I understand the necessity of activating a software via internet (you all know why) and I've made my peace with that. But why do I need an account on the software developers website - in this case a so called equinux ID - to get a software activated I legally purchased?

They state "Note: All data is transferred using secure connections." Fine, but what if I don't want to expose any data? I don't want to give them any personal data because they don't really need it. I don't want to make any of my auctions traceable by equinux, I don't want my auctions to be connected to an equinux server, I don't like even the mere possibility. I simply want a programme that helps me with setting up ebay auctions!

There comes a lot of "forcing" with this app. The developers force their users

- to have a badge with every auction

- to provide an eMail address for downloading updates

- to get like bare naked in a personal-data sense

and who knows what else.

There's no fun in using this app.

I'm also missing hint that using subtitles creates additional costs.

And this app is SLOW. Just try changing auctions, or setting up a new auction, or ... .

Although I have a regular licence I guess I'm not going to use iSale.

MEMPHISBIRD  I just got the MacUpdate email telling me iSale has been updated, and when I click the download link, I can't start the download unless I put in my email address, so they can send me an invitation to get their newsletter. What? No! Even if I want the newsletter, I shouldn't be forced to give my email address in order to download the application. Since I already own it, I can update from within the application itself, but I like to keep the .dmg files, and I have to give my email address to get it. I'm not sure that's a very good practice.

MACMEND.COM  In many respects this has always been a neat little application but it just doesn't do enough, as far as I was concerned it lacked stability around the most important aspects of sales on ebay...images. I tried every which way to upload two auctions with 3 images and it just couldn't or wouldn't do it by .mac, picasa or even ebay itself

I am not sure why and the help file and instructions are inadequate.

In the past I have recommended this application, but the world moves on and this has not kept up.

STEVEN HSIEH  I have been using iSale for about 3 months and here are some of my thoughts about the program:

-Nice interface, beautiful graphic interface

-Some nice feature such as automatically add buyer's information into your address book.

-Streamlined it can manage your listing from creation all the way to payment and shipping

However, I feel very sad for this application because that's about all the GOOD aspects.

Here comes the bad ones:

-Some how unintuitive, not enough documentation on how to use it.

-Does not tell you how much you will be charged for auction until the moment you submit your auction.

-Lots of template, but a good number of them are repeative just with a diffeernt color, and some don't have any practical use at all (eg. too specific background graphic that will mislead your viewer what you are actually selling)

-Templates are not flexible, you can't move images around, you can't create additional text field or iamge place holder.

-Poor image handling, odd shaped image drop boxes will alter your photos aspect ration quite severely when you drop them in

-Does not allow you to zoom on your image within its image drop box, you can only pan around, which gets annoying very quick.

-Can't modify listing once submitted, does not provide enough realtime information about your listing. If I need to go to ebay to do all this, why am I paying that much for this program!?

-EXPENSIVE compare to other application that does the same thing (if not better)

I have wrote a complain/suggestion e-mail to equinux just now, with all my comment on iSale listed with clear bullets. I hope they can improve the actual functionality rather then just keep on feeding us silly templates.

bottom line, I begin to think I wasted my money on this app, going to switch to GarageSale now.

KBMACUPDATE  This program has a nice GUI but is has elementary features, lacks power and flexibility, and is expensive relative to it's competitor. The developer's of iSale obviously put more thought and time into making a cool looking app that making something that is useful as a serious tool. Here's just a few of its drawbacks:

• Doesn't indicate which eBay features incur an additional fee

• Templates don't allow you to add text into iSale's predefined text areas (so that it appears every time you use the template).

• Can't easily rearrange pictures when using a template. If you want to reorder you have to delete and re-add.

• Can't edit a running auction from iSale. You have to go to eBay's website.

• Can't see the fees for the auction unless you attempt to submit the auction to eBay.

These are just a few of the features I've found lacking. I've also had problems trying to submit auctions and having iSale upload pictures to my iDisk at mac.com. I would get an error that gave me no indication as to the problem or solution (and I could connect to my iDisk from the Finder).

I bought this program based on it winning an Apple Design Award but I really think Apple missed the mark on this one. I'm wondering if any of the judges really tried to put this to serious use or they were just dazzled by the interface.

I regret spending $40 on this program and wish I had read some reviews first. I havent' tried the competitor GarageSale yet but reviews have been good and it only costs $25. The GUI might not be as nice or flashy but apparently it is actually useful at creating and managing auctions.

MAHOJAS  This version is a huge improvement in comparison with previous versions. At the moment I don't find another auction program quite like iSale. It works wonderfully on my Macbook Pro. Purchasing it really pays off, and I get better auction returns in eBay. Keep on improving the presentations folks. Customer service here in Europe was fine for me, with prompt and helpful response.

BAZOOKAMAN  I will never again deal with Equinox software. i could not get their template feature to work on my computer and when i asked for help, it took 9 days for a response. And even after that, they could not solve my problem. After expressing my distaste for their software and asking for a refund i was told too bad. you should have tested it first. Oh well. Live and learn i suppose. I did download Garage Sale and have to say it works fabulously. No problems at all.

I figured Equinox might have improved since the last time i was misled by them, but i guess i was incorrect.

WEDGE07  I'm a Store owner on eBay. Used TurboLister until I got rid of my last PC. I though iSale would be at least as easy to use as any other i-type App. Nope. But first, the Pro which you've probably read a lot about: iLife integration. It's fairly seamless. Just like the product documentation states. Pull pictures from iPhoto. Host pics with iMac... sort of. The template feature lets you import pics all over the place, but doesn't automatically resize them to fit the little windows. Gave up on trying to figure out if there was a way to have iSale automate the process. So I stuck to "no template" style.

Another bennie was the integration with iCal and scheduled start times. Even gives you the three most popularly used of "night watch", "eBay's best" and one other one I can't recall.

Cons:

1. CUSTOMER SUPPORT IS NON-EXISTANT! I’ve written e-mail after e-mail and NEVER got a response. If you have a problem, concern or suggestion for improvement, they will not answer. It’s been over two weeks since my first question.

2. WYSIWYG editing is sophomoric at best. There’s no way to toggle back and forth to edit the WYSIWYG, then check the source code to make sure it’s what you want. You have to pick one or the other from the start.

3. When iSale is submitting the listing, some character’s aren’t recognized and replaced with question marks. Suuuure would be nice if there were some sort of warning when selecting validation before submitting to eBay. So far I’ve submitted about 45 listings and had to revise about 35 of those to correct the errors. Not what I want for a $40 piece of software. That means every time I submit a listing, I have to check and revise it in eBay (kind of defeating the purpose of this software) and edit the listing in html (also defeating the purpose of the software) which takes an extra 5 minutes chasing done one errant character in the source code.

4. The templates are not editable. A big detractor if you want to extend your listing description. Pretty much forces you to the non-template design.

5. When “updating the status” of listings, your will only get updates of auction listings, not store listings. In fact, the program provides minimum support for store owners in general. You can’t even import listings from eBay that are already at your store. Not a problem with TL.

So I kind of look at it this way. Lots of really cool capes, but most do not seem they were completely thought out, very unlike a OS X app. If you want to administer your store with this, forget it. It’s taken at least twice the amount of time I ever spent with TurboLister. My humble suggestion is either continue with TL or use Nvu and import the HTML into eBay. Both of those are free and take less time.

I tried out iSale 3.0.5 for about two weeks and was impressed. There were a few drawbacks and things it was missing (like ability to revise auctions within the application and smart communication with "My eBay" mainly for updating auction info), but it was a great relief from the tediousness of regular auction posting on eBay.

But then I tried GarageSale and it blows away iSale. I just purchased it. Anyone who says it lacks customizability hasn't discovered the built-in Font and Color pallettes (standard OS X pallettes) and all the preferences in the menu and in the "Advanced" tabs. It has everything iSale has plus some great additional features such as checking boxes for "Invoice Sent, Payment Received, Item Shipped, and Feedback Given" to help you keep track if you're selling a lot of stuff; plus it has a great ability to sync with "My eBay".

One thing that annoyed me about iSale was that it felt so separated from your actual "My eBay" info - GarageSale automatically downloaded all of my recent auction info and put it into a well organized, yet customizable list. That was awesome.

All of this alone makes Garagesale, hands down, the better choice between the two. (I haven't tried any other Mac OS X eBay apps.) More noteworthy, the thing that initally prompted me to investigate something other than iSale was that iSale just recently stopped working - eBay has changed it's code policy to only accept "XML Unified Schema" (whatever that means), so it stopped iSale from working completely!! That is unacceptable on Equinox's part. I'm sure they'll deal with this problem asap, but they just lost one potential customer to Garagesale.

Hopefully no bugs or crappy things arise, but so far it is a GREAT appplication and well worth $25.

p.s. I only took the time to write this lengthy review because I want this company to keep developing this app - it sucks went an app gets ditched. Also, I can't comment on Support/Documentation since I haven't had to use any yet...

JOBBY  OK, so I enter my FTP details (which weren't preserved from the 2.x demo for some reason, despite my giving permission to access the Keychain item) and hit 'Test Upload', and the whole thing just crashes. Not good.

It also trys to 'phone home' on each start up. If this is just a check for new versions, please add an option to disable this. I prefer to manage my updates through macupdate.com rather than have apps all shouting 'look at my shiny new version' every time I start them :)

RGREEN517  You would think for the price you pay, you wouldn't have to have an advertisement badge on every auction submitted through iSale, but you do. I support the software, by buying it, I don't feel like having to advertise it to everyone when I put auctions up. Seems tacky. So, you need to go into every auction after you submit it, and delete the code pointing to the badge graphic. Also, it would be nice to be able to update auctions after they have been submitted, but you have to go to ebay to do that as well.

JAYSON  Looks like a great application, from what of it I've used. One thing that I would really like to see is to change the main interface to like that in iTunes.

First I would suggest having the list of auctions ABOVE the description window to optimize some space for us iBook G4 users.

NOLATRON  Very cool app. Made listing a whole bunch of auctions very easy. Tracking is great too. Though I'd like to be able to view all auctions and status all together, like the My ebay page.

Also, just a note. The app defaulted to put a html table with links to all auctions already running. Ebay saw these links as "keyword spamming" an cancelled about 15 of my auctions, only crediting me for about 5. So I suggest *NOT* using this option or the RSS feature possibly if you have a few auctions running at the same time.

MARK  I genuinely do not understand the negative remarks made here by some customers over the service provided for iSale - I have bombarded the company with emailed questions, and every one has been thoroughly and courteously answered within 48 hours.

The program has already speeded up my sales of certain types of items by 3-4 times, and makes managing sales a breeze.

First off there is no field to manually specify your Payment & Shipping instructions.

LJ  I find that I have to agree with JamesG about iSale and GarageSale. Both products target different types of users.

For me, iSale works. I like the features of Tiger that iSale takes advantage of, I'm only going to ship products to people within the UK and I like a nice looking UI. The choice is simple.

If I was a person looking to ship internationally or thought I might at some point like to add something onto Ebay Motors, then the choice would be obvious: GarageSale.

It really depends on what you're looking for. Take advantage of the trial copies and see which one it is you desire.

One thing that I found really annoying about iSale, however, is that upon purchase you have to wait quite a while for the activiation code. Well...I have things I want to put on ebay NOW, not later. Unfortunate.

BRANDON  I've just 'killed off' my Windows addiction with the purchase of a PowerMac and PowerBook. Bye-bye old 600mhz Hewlett Packard...

However, I find that as an eBay PowerLister, my Mac options are...ummm...limited. My old machine was too old / slow / lacking in memory to optimize TurboLister, but TurboLister gave me all the functionality I needed.

Create folders, a WYSIWYG HTML editor, multiple listing uploads, storage of listed auctions, etc. I've spent the last several days looking for a good Mac replacement, and I've not found one. I sell almost exclusively on eBay Motors...so iSale is dead in the water.

I'd rather OWN good software vs rent it...but I'm currently debating between iLister and GarageSale. Neither are really what I'm looking for at this point. Maybe I'll just keep running TurboLister in a Virtual PC session. :/

ARTNOC (JAMESG)  Much has been written (good, bad, and somewhat mean) about iSale and Garagesale. After reading what everyone had to say, I was confused. I downloaded the trials, for both these programs, and found that they are both excellent; however, each has distinct strengths and weaknesses.

iSale Strengths:

1. Very intuitive interface; appears to combine the look and feel of the Address Book and iTunes.

2. Program does not slow down as the number of templates increase

3. Track Sales from the the main screen (or iCal), even as you create your next auction

iSale Weaknesses:

1. No calculated worldwide shipping (Flat-rate shipping only)

2. Does not currently work with eBay motors

3. Supports .Mac and Ebay image serving but not FTP.

Garagesale Strengths:

1. Calculated Worldwide Shipping

2. Ebay Motors Compatibility

3. FTP and .Mac Image Serving

Garagesale Weaknesses:

1. Interface takes a moment to get used to.

2. Others say that program slows down when user has more than 100 templates.

3. Doesn’t allow you to track multiple auctions (current $) at one time.

When it all comes down to it, both these programs are great; I will gladly give each 4 out of 5 stars. Yet, each seams to attract different people. For me, I prefer iSale because I do have a .Mac account, and I am just looking for a simple and easy to use program to sell some of my junk :). I plan to do only a few sales per month. For those planning on shipping internationally and in need of calculated shipping, I would use Garagesale. Both of these programs seem to be targeted at people looking to quickly and simply post items onto Ebay. Contrary, I cannot say that either of these programs are currently suitable for Ebay Powersellers. The inherent simplicity is their downfall in this respect. To attract to these potential clients both equinux and iwascoding should further develop their after-sales tools allowing the program to share information with other inventory and accounting programs (like Quickbooks or MYOB). A simple csv export option (automatic or manual) would help Powersellers bridge the gap between the sale of an item and the associated accounting. Both programs have and continue to evolve; whatever program you decide to use, be sure to keep in contact with their respective creators. Both products are relatively new and the best way to get the improvements you want is to ask for them, not complain about them.

And yes I did submit this to both MacUpdate and VersionTracker :o)

DISAPPOINTED DAVE  Mac users whosell on eBay have long needed the program that iSale is intended to be. However, I am disapointed with iSale version 1.7 because it has so many bugs. The category window flakes out with font problems and refresh and resizing issues. The category number field is frozen and un editable and the list of categories does not include eBay Motors. That's as far as I got with this program before I gave up on it. It should not have been released with so many fundamental flaws. I really need a program that allows me to prepare my auctions off-line so please fix the bugs soon. Until then, try getting help or a refund from Aspire 512-708-8100 9 am to 6 pm M-F Central time.

MR.ASH  Try to use Garagesale, it has better features, better interface, smaller to download and it's cheaper.

iSale isn't too bad but Garagesale is better in any way.

ERIC  There is one feature of Garagesale that I like that I wish iSale had, an indicator for listing options that cost more money. Take a look at Garagesale and try to emulate or do something better. I'm on the edge on whether to purchase the product or not.

ANONYMOUS  This software doesn't allow me to say that I ship worldwide unless I first declare a shipping price. But how can I do this for worldwide sale, it is simply not possible to chose one shipping price for dozens of different countries. Very frustrating.

ANONYMOUS  I've seen one reviewer who mentions eBay motors. Firstly i cannot beleive that they do NOT support eBay motors. And after going round and round with Customer Service, i've discovered that ebay motors is a different site. Of course, you can still access it through ebay. I suppose its only called ebay motors by coincidence. and what do they do there? Oh yes. Right. Auctions. yep, completely different site.

1/ no crash up to now

2/ simple but intuitive

To be improved :

1/ no "upload images to server" (and use as gallery)

4/ send more than one file to ebay at a time

Bad :

1/ no doc

2/ unknown license price policy for future versions

3/ ebay item description "worldwide shipping" not checked unless you indicate a shipping price (which you may not know since it depends on the country you will ship to!)

EBAY-JEFF  Fiddly interface? I think they did a great job in creating an interface that matches up with the same standards of use from Addressbook and other Apple native applications.

This application will allow you to cut and paste html templates you already have for your auctions without munging them up.

The ONLY feature that they don't have, that would be a tremendous selling point is if they did "calculated shipping". GarageSale has this implimented, but it isn't as clean as this app.
