STEVEN GOODHEART HUZZAH! MacLamps is back and it works with Snow Leopard, just in time for the holidays! Like others, I really missed it, so hanks so much for this great and for putting all this effort into a FREE program. (Version 2.0b)

CREEPSTER I went to set this up for this year and found out that I could no longer install the screen saver. I am using Snow Leopard. How ironic. A screen saver with snow that can't run on SNOW Leopard. (Version 2.0)

THE ARCTICMAC I'll be doing a much-needed release in a few days to make the screensaver SL compatible. If you would be willing to test it for me (it's embarrassing when releases don't work), please email me using the contact form on my website! (Version 2.0)

CREEPSTER Looking forward to helping you test this. Hope you got my contact OK. (Version 2.0)

ADRIENNE_AM Hi, I have had this recommended to me, but every time I download it, I'm unable to mount the dmg file. I get a warning saying that the disk image failed to mount. I have tried downloading from here and the developer's original site. I am using OS X 4.11 on my PowerPC iBook G4.

DOUGSTER Brilliant ! The .dmg file now opens....and works ! It feels as if Christmas has come early ! The screensaver is also fab. Thanks so much for swiftly sorting out this problem, developer. Really appreciated :-) (Version 2.0)

THE ARCTICMAC For all those who've had issues with the download, I've decided to change to a zlib compressed disk image, which shouldn't cause any problems for anyone. Note that the download URL is the same as always, so you may need to clear your browser cache to get the new file. Also, for future reference, it's good to know that tip that the admins posted - just remove the .bz2 file extension and open the d/l file directly as a dmg. (Version 2.0)

DOUGSTER I am having the same problem as Creepster in trying to open the .dmg.bzf file.Very strange. Also, the previous versions of MacLamps .dmg files will no longer open on my Intel iMac, using Leopard 10.5.1. (Version 2.0)

THE ARCTICMAC Hey - see the post on the main page about the problem with the latest version. If you're still having trouble with the older versions, could you get in touch with me via email (use the form on my website - I don't want to post my email here and get spammed any more than I already am) so that we can troubleshoot? Thanks! (Version 2.0)

CREEPSTER I am using 10.4.11 on an Intel iMac. The file DL's as maclampsx.dmg.bz2. If I double click it and allow Apple's opener to try, it then becomes maclampsx.dmg.bz2.cpgz. If I double click that, it changes to maclampsx.dmg2.bz2. And so on and so on. If I use stuffit expander on the D/L, it opens to what appears to be a proper dmg file, but then I'll get a warning that says "The following disk images failed to mount" Reason - no mountable file systems. I have never seen this type of behavior before. (Version 2.0)

MACUPDATE ADMIN remove the .bz2 suffix from the downloaded file, then the .dmg will mount properly. (Version 2.0)

THE ARCTICMAC A couple things about the new release. First off, it seriously is 10.4 or higher only. I'm so sure of this (like, really really sure) that I even used a format for the disk image that's specific to 10.4 and higher. I'd like to maybe do a 10.3.9 release sometime in the future, but it has to wait until I get access to my PPC box, which won't be until at least June. Furthermore, for the user who requests more bulb packs - I'm an engineer and a software developer, not an artist. Once and a while I get inspired to draw bulbs, but not very often. I've got some stuff in the pipeline to help folks out creating bulbs, and I'm hosting bulb files on my site so they're easier to find, but I'm not going to be able to do most of the artwork. I'd love it if you'd be willing to contribute. Really. (Version 2.0)

CREEPSTER It is just me, or is there something wrong with the file that gets D/L'd. It doesn't open or anything. Even from the developer's site. (Version 2.0)

ZANGIEF I've always liked this app. Now
The developer needs to include fiesta bulbs chiles, salsa, chips, maracas, etc. This could be something totally great if it worked for every single holiday and the days in between! I want to see huge packs of bulbs for this. (Version 2.0)

CREEPSTER Great program. It really adds a zing to the desktop. Run this and iTunes in the background with some Christmas music and you'll really get into the spirit. My only wish would be that it played MIDI files. I ahve a ton of Xmas ones. (Version 1.2)

ERICB This is a great app- thanks for making it available. However, I'm having the same problem as "Anonymous" in that I can't seem to get Preferences to do anything. I save the configuration and nothing changes; I restart the program and nothing changes. Can you give a quick procedure for changing the settings? Or is it my system? (eMac, 10.4.3). Thanks again! THE ARCTICMAC drag bulbs around to change the layout, and use the other controls to set flashing, etc. as you wish. if that doesn't work, please take a moment to email me (contact form can be found on my website), so that we can work out what the problem is. (Version 1.1.1)

THE ROTTEN APPLE Mac OS X 10.4.3 For FREE, no complaints. Lots of bulbs and lots of options! Looks like it should and works 99.99% One minor glitch I found when attempting to use the "Check For New Bulbs" option a few too many times, it hung and required a forced quit. Great work, and well worth the tiny download! (Version 1.1(2))

THE ARCTICMAC Sincerest apologies to all who downloaded the initial release of version 1.1 and were unable to open. Version 1.1(2) is available from my site (and hopefully here too, soon), and fixes a problem with the disk image that made it unopenable under 10.3 and lower. Version 1.1(2) is also recommended for everyone due to the fact that it contains a Spacer bulb which I accidentally left out of the initial release. Happy Holidays! (Version 1.1)

ANONYMOUS OK, I downloaded MacLamps X today into Tiger 10.4.3. Now I have lights all around the screen. What is the secret for getting the preferences to do anything? I made some changes, clicked on "Save" and nothing changed. Tried "Save and Close" and that did not work either. (Version 1.0)

THE ARCTICMAC Hi. I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble with MacLampsX. I haven't heard of any instances of your problem before this, and I'd really like to see if I can get it fixed. If possible, could you please drop me a line using the contact form on my website? (the url for that is http://arcticmac.home.comcast.net/contact.html ) Short of that, look around in your log files to see if MacLampsX is writing any errors. It SHOULD, when working correctly, update the preferences live. The save button (in version 1.0) saves the preferences to MacOSX's defaults system so that they will be there on your next launch of the app. (Version 1.0)

CRAIG After my move to OS X, I e-mailed Tiger Technologies to make an OS X version of Holiday Lights. It was a favorite of mine in OS 9. They didn't think they were going to do it. Ta Da. It's been done and NOT by Tiger Tech. And it's very close to Holiday Lights. Thank you so much for making this program. I can't wait until it can play midi files. Or hope it can. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS One kink: the "bulb chase" checkbox has no effect, in 10.2.8, at least (with "flash bulbs" checked, of course). The bulbs all flash on at the same time, and all go off at the same time; "chase" should stagger the on and off. Suave otherwise; I love the drag-n-drop config method. (Version 1.0)

THE ARCTICMAC You say chase doesn't work? that's odd... perhaps you could contact me (use the email on my site) to discuss in more depth. I've had no other complaints of it from anyone else (or myself, and I run 10.2.8), so it seems to be an odd bug. If so, I'd like to get it corrected if at all possible!
| Dec 20 2004 |
ANONYMOUS I see what it is; chase is overridden when it would cause two adjacent bulbs to be dark at the same time. Adding in another bulb fixes this. eg, snowflake/bulb in one row won't chase, but snowflake/bulb/snowflake will. (Version 1.0)
