CEH  I have been using MovieGate for 4 -- 5 weeks now, and I strongly recommend it. It is an excellent tool for authoring DVDs with menus -- it usually takes me 2 -- 3 minutes to select the video files, edit the menu and start it encoding. I run OS 10.5.6 on a quad-core system.

Typically, I want to encode and burn .avi source files. MovieGate runs a process for each video file, so that if I'm burning a DVD with 4 videos on it, MovieGate runs 4 processes, taking full advantage of the quad core processor. It is very fast and the quality is excellent. The developer is amazingly responsive, and if I have had any problem he usually comes back with a new beta within a few days.

MAILMAN42  MovieGate 2.67, MBP 10.5.5

Just recently, MG has quit creating the DMG files.

In the Preferences, as soon as I check mark the correct setting, it automatically un-checks itself.

I have plenty of hd space. Not sure what is happening.

LIJUNFAN  Is this still under development?

It doen't work anymore on my MacBook with OS 10.5.4. Quicktime 7.5.5.

Bugs here:

-Can't return to Main Menu from a Submenu. Preview Area gets clean instead.

-Can add new Videos but they don't appear in the Menu.

-Can't change size or prostion of any button, The Sliders do not react.

Unusable, what a pity! I really loved this App!!

AIKOUSHA  I had tried out a version of this, back in it's dark days... when it didn't really have english support and it had to download libs before it ran. At the time it had promise, but was severely lacking in comparison to other tools I already used. However...

Now, it manages to go through it's entire installation process, and setup at first launch... and then says it doesn't like my video card and Quartz Extreme.

Since my video card is completely compatible with all of Apple's video processes... Why, because I have the G4 AGP, which is fully compatible with Quartz Extreme.

So there is something flawed big-time in this version. In it's current form, it now just puts up the dialog box and then quits. Very useless and very annoying.

OLDCORPSE  I guess I'm not quite clear on what exactly this app is capable of, and I don't read French :)... though I'm working on the latter!

Perhaps there are others in this situation, so I'm hoping this will be of interest to a broader audience, which is why I'm asking here, rather than bugging the dev through email...

I'm on FCP 4.5 HD. I have a 135 minute long film encoded in MPEG-2 through Compressor, and the files are saved on an external FW HDD. I have an external FW DL DVD burner.

Would MovieGate let me burn a DVD using these files onto a DL disc? If yes, then it's a definite buy - I don't need the sophistication of DVDSP, and Toast 7 is too much $.

CHRISTOPHE DUCOMMUN  I don't know if MPEG-2 generated by compressor are compatible with dvdauthor (open source tool to generate de DVD structure), but you can try to select

your MPEG-2 file in MovieGate and try to Keep the file as is to create your DVD.

You can try the trial version, and if you have any other question, send me an E-Mail.

The user manual is localized in English and the App is also localized in English.

FARAUK MAL-EL  I don't know if it is because I run OSX on other language than US English, but loyal to its tradition, MovieGate's installer has once more messed up the .DS_store files of every directory it installes files to (namely one's Apps. and App. Support folders) as well as those of the directories 1 level below them.

This has been a constant, and a very disturbing one, as the only way of solving the mess is rearranging everything manually.

The only solution until this gets fixed is to use Pacifist to extract the files and put them oneslef where they belong.

SJK  Yep, the MovieGate 1.1.6 installer will add or overwrite a /Applications/.DS_Store file. Using Pacifist isn't the *only* workaround for that. Before installing just save a copy of any .DS_Store file(s) MovieGate clobbers and restore it/them after installing. Easy (and free) if you're Terminal-savvy; otherwise using Pacifist ($20 shareware) is a good suggestion.

I_FORGET  I had 7 mpeg-2 files I wanted to burn as a DVD, and was about to give up until I read about MovieGate. Downloaded and installed it, launched immediately and assigned it the task -- way too easy. Still trying to figure out why DVD player can't go to the various chapters in the disk image, but it plays fine as one whole movie.

It's still unburned, pending location of my blank DVD-R, but I've seen enough. This will do nicely. When I've burned three discs I'll know it's time to donate.

Dual 2.5/1.5GB/250GB HD/OS 10.3.8 took an hour and a half to encode it (4GB+) in the background, with Excel and Word running in the foreground, as well as an occasional email check, google search or screensaver intrusion.

DEVELOPPE OF MOVIEGATE  You need only an internet connection for installation of the open source tools which cannot be included in the package.

You can download the tools and install it manually

in Library/Application Support/MovieGate, you need mpeg2enc, mplayer and mp2enc check the link in the installer.

ANONYMOUS  very good at what it does

but the estimation of the size the dvd will be is very inaccurate and deceptive. i try to alter to bit rate to the highest possible and it still only encodes to between 2.7 and 3.3 Gb - it won't encode if the estimated size is above the size of a dvd.

ANONYMOUS  does a damn good job

you have to have about 18Gb free on your hard drive to fit the encoded files though. it encodes the files twice then makes an image, each file being like 4Gb including a wav audio file.

work fine though

the image is burnable with disk utility

ANONYMOUS  If you have a stack of video files you need to turn into a DVD without a lot of fuss, MovieGate is the app for you.

There are a few areas where MG falls down. First, it doesn't support importing vobsub subtitle files (or indeed, ANY subtitle files). Second, the preview window in the chaptering section is very imprecise. If there any place where milisecond control is vital, it's here. And third, you have to reset the quantiser and encoding bit rate for each video as you add them.

But what it does, it does exceedingly well. Feed it a stack of video files, set it, and walk away. Come back in...well, let's face it, unless you're driving a dual 2+ ghz PowerMac, it's gonna take several hours at a minimum. You'll have a disk image file ready and waiting for you to burn with Toast or Disk Utilities.

If the encoding settings were persistant, subtitle support were added and the chaptering preview had a more precise control, this would be a full five star app. As it is, I'll have to give it 4 1/4 stars. 8^)
