ANONYMOUS not unless it was binhex when you zipped it (your question is confusing, somewhat)

ZAMA Yes, as mentioned before, using Panther's built-in "Create Archive of..." contextual menu command will create a ZIP file that is highly preferable to binhex. When you host the file, it will simply download as a zip file -- not binhex. Does this clarify things?

Also, when posting comments as the developer, you should change the Review Type drop-down box to "From Developer." Otherwise, people here will have no idea that you are the developer.

ANONYMOUS Why don't you actually try it and see. Zip is better than HQX for sure, but SitX will give you even better compression than either one of those.

	Dec 7 2004	ZAMA Please, please, please do not release software in binhex (hqx) format. It is an outdated file format that should be taken out back and shot. Twice. In the head. Binhexing creates bloated file sizes and is completely unnecessary in the world of OS X. The best distribution method is put your software in an uncompressed DMG file, and then compress it via the bzip2 Terminal command. If that's a hassle and you're targeting Panther users, simply right-click on the folder and choose "Create Archive of..." Thank you for listening. (Version 1.0)		0

ANONYMOUS Moreover, please, please don't waste your and our time rewriting software that's included with every Mac running OS X!

Sheesh. Is it asked too much to look into the Utilities folder and find something that isn't in there before starting to code?

ANONYMOUS The difference in size between bzip2-compressed uncompressed DMGs and compressed DMGs is less than 20%, often less than 10%. In exchange for saving a few hundred K out of a multi-megabyte download, or a few 10s of K out of a smaller download, you get an extra decompression step if your browser and unpacker settings are reasonably secure (you should never automatically open, unpack, or execute anything).

ZAMA You are quite right. I completely forgot to mention that due to the small size of this particular software package, a standard compressed DMG file would be optimal. Above a certain threshold (perhaps above 10MB), it's usually better to prepare an uncompressed DMG and apply bzip2 compression before serving to the public.

ANONYMOUS Yes, it's not so bad, not ugly... Plain and simple, sure.

And so what if there are other apps that do these things, how many brands of soap are there? Some people like Dove, some people like Palmolive. Give the kid (developer) a break. It's free, for cryin' out loud.
