MCFRAG  I've used this puppy mainly to selectively replace the contents of HTML files I created in iWeb.

For this, it is IMHO an ideal tool! Changing contents 30 files just takes a few seconds. And that's for multiple changes per file. Fast enough.

Just use finder search to select the files I want in a hierarchy of folders, then drag&drop them on massreplaceit.

(that's how you can do nested folder/treewalk for those who asked for the feature)

You can have multiple sets saved for various repetitive tasks, so even if a more complex search-and-replace is needed to modify a file (or files) which normally would take a 2-step approach, it can be done. With ease.

The fields can take quite lengthy pieces of text (I haven't ran against a limit yet), which makes it very easy to have f.e. the META values in a HTML file be replaced by something I want.

For me it's an ideal side-companion to iWeb.

DOM21  Worthless to me. Asked it to remove the extension .ts from the end of a folder full of .ts files. It couldn't. Asked it to remove "p.0" from the middle of the same files and replace it with "p." It couldn't.

I'm glad so many others are having such roaring success though. I'll look elsewhere.

HEXMONKEY SOFTWARE  Hi Dom21,

Thanks for your feedback. Most likely your search settings weren't correct, for example it may have been set to search contents when you wanted to search filenames. If you email me (see the link on the MassReplaceIt website) I can help you find the problem.

JUSTIN NIGHTINGALE  Well, slap me sideways and call me Mary Poppins, if this isn't the best thing since.. really good things started.. being. Does what you want, no fuss, lots of features. Download this puppy before she scampers away and leaves you standing there with a lead in your hand. Discipline, thats the key. Harsh but fair. You know what I'm saying?

ALEX KADIS  It's very nice, but I wish it had a recursive option (continuous searching through directories). Thank you very much for releasing this for free.

HEXMONKEY SOFTWARE  It does, in the Preferences uncheck the "Limit folder search depth to [x] levels" option.

RICHO  Nice start and nearly very useful, but the content feature has glitches. Try replacing 'Pop' in '"Pop?"' or even 'Pop.' with another word and it gets into trouble with the punctuation.

HEXMONKEY SOFTWARE  I tried your example, and it worked exactly as expected, as follows:

Search text: Pop

Replace text: Replaced

File contents before search: "Pop?"

File contents after search: "Replaced?"

If you got a different result, could you post specific details, including search options, so that I can look into a fix?

HEXMONKEY SOFTWARE  Unfortunately the main site is currently down, so the download link won't work. In the mean time, you can download the current version from the following temporary mirror:

Sorry for any inconvenience.

ANONYMOUS  Version 2 is perfect! Quite shocked by the rate of updates however (first 2, 2.0.1, 2.0.2 all in one week!) It's ok though, as the app is only 152K.

It's not an app one uses all the time.. but when you do need to... it's great as it saves so much time!

Unfortunately, it doesn't really support .doc format... but it's very rare you need to change a word in several essays. However, that's an area for improvement.

For HTML though, it's great!

BOB EARTH  Fantastic program, great flexibility with filename or contents replacing. It allows you to work out all features within seconds. 10 out of 10 from me.

ANONYMOUS  Um... I don't actually know what the Query thing is? I'm quite good with computers... and I know what a query is, but how does it affect the search? In this way it could really do with a ReadMe as this has none!

Otherwise, the app does what it says, and really well. You can feel a lot of time went into it. Worth a try, download it!

HEXMONKEY SOFTWARE  Queries don't affect the search, they are just a way to save a search. For example, if you set up a search list of 100 files, choose the options you want, and create an extension mask, you could save it as a query so that you don't have to recreate the whole search again in the future.

As for documentation, it's available from the Help menu. The help covers almost every aspect of the program, including several pages on queries.

WIZARD  Too buggy. I was able to replace something only once. Without that success I would write that is is not working at all. Keeps forgetting the settings as well. Nice concept though. I am waiting for an update which is working.

TI  I've been looking for this kind of tool for ages now.

Great interface. I like how it can save common queries, and allow a variety of options.

Very easy to use.
