ANONYMOUS One would think that with such a glorious cafeteria on the Mother Ship campus, where the food is fit for kings, there would be enough brain power to avoid blunders such as this. Apparently however, even such fine cuisine can't fuel enough neurons to prevent mistakes. Which proves I suppose that even the Apple gods are only human. Mistakes happen, and while I sympathize with those that had their machines needlessly disabled by a poor-quality firmware update, it's almost always a really good idea to wait a few weeks at least after one these critical updates is released before applying it to mission-critical work station. Even still, Apple should makes ammends to those who have suffered due to Apple's mistake. (Version 5.1.5f2)

RICK FENTON Well after much nail biting and hand wringing I have indeed got my single processor G5 1.6 working again. It's main job is as a pro tools platform and I lost 5 days of billable hours. I did in fact end up speaking to Apple and got through finally to a higher up the food chain rep. She was very good, and as upset as I was that Apple would release a buggie firmware update. I agree with much of what has been said. A couple of points though. My 3rd party Ram was installed by a licensed Apple service tech. The Ram was approved for use by Apple. The computer had run fine with it for 3 months. The firmware was the problem in my case not cheap RAM. Also I think that the car analogy is variable. It depends what kind of car you need. If you can afford it and like to push the envelope you buy the Ferrari (G5) If it was my Dad purchasing a Mac I'd get hiim an Imac G4 with about 1/2 a gig of Ram and tell him to have it serviced by pros only. Those of us out here on the listserves are the folks that are on the "bleeding edge" That being said we are not paid to be beta testers and problem solvers for Apple. They have engineers getting paid far more than I do for that.

ANONYMOUS The fact that you would ever have to touch the inside of your computer to install an update (firmware included) is ridiculous. Luckily I know much about the inside of a computer. However, Macs are supposed to be very easy to use, for EVERYONE. Imagine a senior citizen who has never owned a computer has bought a new Mac to keep in touch with their grandchildren over the internet. Software Update runs automatically and tells them they have to install an update. fine. easy. BUT before doing so they have to open up the computer and pull out 3rd party RAM chips. what!! Is this 2004!? C'mon apple! YOU SHOULD NOT MAKE PEOPLE SUFFER FOR BUYING 3RD PARTY PRODUCTS. Because then they won't buy apple products to use them with anymore. (Version 5.1.5f2)

ANONYMOUS You are not very well informed. There are RAM modules and then there are RAM modules. Some are within proper specifications and some are not. The ones that are not within proper specifications will cause trouble for people, eventually. Buy cheap RAM and you get cheap RAM. And, the idea that a computer is a car that you simply turn the key and drive is beyond ridiculous. (Version 5.1.5f2)

VIKRAM SHARMA Just swap the rams, keep apple ram on the outer slots the way I have done it. DIMM2/J13 and DIMM3/J14 for apple ram and the inner RAM slots for the third party RAM that should solve your problem. (Version 5.1.5f2)

CHRIS I had the memory problem with the previous update, so instead of pulling out my 3rd party RAM, I pulled out the Hynix RAM that came with my G5, and GUESS WHAT? It worked flawlessly with only the 512 MB of 3rd party RAM in it. From what I hear, Hynix RAM is *very* picky about what other RAM it will play well with. My suggestion, lose the Hynix in favor of the 3rd party stuff. Much cheaper per MB anyway (Version 5.1.5f2)

BRIAN KENDIG What does this firmware update 5.1.5f2 fix over 5.1.5f1, specifically? I'm of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school, especially when I see what problems people have been having with the previous firmware update. Why should I install this one? (Version 5.1.5f2)

CYBERDYNE What the problem with those guys at Cupertino ? About one of two updates causes problems now. But this one takes the cake. My G5 1.6 is totally unusable now. Crashes every two or three minutes. DO NOT INSTALL THIS SH*T !!! Hey, Apple, do you even test your crap before releasing it ? Do you want us to really hate you ? Well, in my case, you succeeded. BASTARDTWIN I made the mistake of updating the 5.1.5f1 firmware on my machine before reading the Apple discussion boards and now my machine is routinely crashing and freezing up. This update seems to adversely affect both 3rd party and non-3rd party ram. I can now only run my machine with half my memory otherwise it will crash and freeze. I would highly recommend avoiding this update until Apple releases a fix. (Version 5.1.5f1)

ANONYMOUS I'm unable to use my 1.6., infreqvent kernel panic during the first few minutes. Unanble to reinstall system. Just Apple-RAM, no other modules ... It's terrible, one of the worst updates I've ever seen (PC included).

CHRIS STUARD 1.6 GHz owners: *DO NOT INSTALL THIS UPDATE!!!* I have had NOTHING but problem with my G5 since installing this update. Not only will it crash on sleep still (to which I did what I did before, disable sleep mode in the energy svaer control panel), but somehow now all my digital pics are completely screwed up and some USB devices don't seem to work properly (like digital cameras). Every import from my Nikon CoolPix 2100 comes out all garbled, whereas importing on another PC imports pictures perfectly. Apple, PLEASE next time make sure that a firmware update will fix the problems you state and not create new ones. It may work fine on 1.8 machines and above, but apparently I'm not the first 1.6 owner to have major problems with this... (Version 5.1.5f1)

ANONYMOUS Try moving RAM around. Fixed it for me. Still, a terrible thing to release and Apple should release a fix (or just a rollback) pronto.

ANONYMOUS from another website: "1.6 GHz systems become unstable almost to the point of being unusable. Crashing repeatedly after approx. 5 or 6 minutes of use, even on machines that have never crashed prior to the installation of the Power Mac G5 Uniprocessor Firmware Updater 5.1.5f1. Some users have found that running the Apple Hardware test CD reveals a memory error, indicating that the firmware update may increase sensitivity to problematic RAM modules. Try removing non-Apple RAM from your system, or moving the modules to different sockets (faster-rated RAM in the lower sockets) and see if it makes a difference. Other than removing bad RAM modules, however, there does not seem to be a solid workaround to this issue. It is impossible to revert firmware versions." (Version 5.1.5f1)

PER, DENMARK I had all the mentioned problems after the FW 5.1.5f1 update on my G5 1,6 mhz. USB froze after 5 min., printer didn´t function right etc. Some have solved the problem by rotating the ram if all 4 slots were filled. It didn´t work for me. After many hours investigating I removed the origanl 2x128 mb Hynix ram blocks installed by Apple and the machine has worked flawlesly for two days now. The 2x512 mb Kingston ram, I bought later, seem to work fine alone. So it´s better to discard the 256 mb ram and keep the 1 Gb. (Version 5.1.5f1)

LIM CHEE KIANG Beware Too!!! Should have left well alone but did not read any warnings prior to my update. After the update USB devices, including keyboard and speakers will freeze after about 5 mins of use. Thereafter a multi-language dialogue box will ask to shut down and restart. It then goes into a loop of restarting and re-freezing. AppleCare guided attmpts at clearing the PRAM etc. all to no avail. Sent panic logs to their product specialist who has asked me to wait while they investigate and probably work on a patch. My PowerMac G5 SP 1.6 is now unuseable. (Version 5.1.5f1)

RICK FENTON I too have been dealing with the Mac Help folks. Same problem my single pro G5 1.6 crashes. If you take out any third party Ram it seems to be fine. That's great if Apple is going to send my 1 gig ram pairs to replace the supported 3rd party Ram that worked fine for the last 3 months (Version 5.1.5f1)
