ALAN I'm not updating my Skype to 2.8 until they fix the following bug: During the audio/video call, if for some reason it gets disconnected, the call window does not go away, thus preventing the party on the other end from being able to call me back. I've contacted Skype via so many sources but never seem to get a response from them. So frustrating that I'm about to give up on ever trying to contact big companies again. They never listen! KLAGRECA Well, I don't think the 64bit version will be more secure or faster, but there is one important reason why skype should be 64bit: the address book plugin/integration. There's workarounds, but I prefer not to workaround something. Anyone want to guess how long it will take Skype to go 64bit, especially since little has changed with Skype in the past year or so? I'll bet on 16 months before we see a 64 bit version, if we're lucky. (Version 2.8.0.722)

BLABLABLA@DODGIT.COM WEBMOTIVA.COM wrote: > The 64-bit apps load much faster and are more stable. There's nothing about a 64-bit app that makes it more stable. Any app can be stable or unstable regardless of whether it's 64 bit, 32 bit, or even 16 bit or 8 bit. Well-engineered code makes and app stable, not 64 bit. (Version 2.8.0.722)

THEBLUENOWHERE Excellent idea, good implementation. I use this regularly to keep in touch with the far flung family and friends, most internet cafés have Skype installed so it comes in handy when travelling. However, the mac version is woeful in video quality, features and general polished-ness (can I use that as a word?) when compared to the windows version. When talking to home in the same country on a broadband connection with 2 fast mac laptops, no firewall and no intermediate peers, the video quality was poor for both ends. But when talking from home to a friend in New Zealand who was on a mobile broadband connection, on a slightly less powerful (processor wise) windows laptop, with the standard built in camera his picture was crystal clear on our computer. SMTIPS Something interesting just happened to me, I had evidently talked for more than 6 hours today on the phone, Skype pulled all the extra money I had in my Skype Credit WITHOUT notifying me, and applied that, and when they applied it they cut me off in mid-call and I cannot use my phone now. Six hours in one day is something plenty of people use...in some cases as in mine with a lot of calls made and much time on the phone in the last few days job seeking. I was completely unaware of this extreme limitation, this is what they call "fair use." It is far from unlimited use or anywhere close to it, and the fact that they would pull the Skype credit out without some kind of notification is criminal. If I was you I'd seriously think twice about using this service, I will not be any more. (Version 2.8.0.438)

KOSOVAR1 All you muppets out there who keep parroting that this is FREE software and FREE p2p phone communications (i.e., if calling a computer), I say your all full of it! Those of us Mac users who subscribe to the Skype-In/Skype-Out services deserve to have feature parity and the same reliability that Windows users have! It really p's me off that Skype keeps the Mac version of the software in seemingly perpetual beta status with the inevitable stability issues and the obvious missing features that Windows users enjoy. YET WE ALL PAY THE SAME PRICE. If Mac users of Skype have to settle for crappy software while Skype for Windows gets all the attention, we Mac users should get a big discount on the cost of the service. I used to like Skype but now I'm ready to toss it. And believe me, I WILL in a heartbeat if a rival service emerges because Skype knows it's cheating us and that's ok for them. Because of the buggy Skype software for Mac OSX, I have had to manually dial all of my saved phone numbers for the last two years. I just bet that's not an issue for Windows users! IVANOVITCH For FREE software delivering FREE VOIP, I see no reason to whinge about this at all. So it's a beta version - big deal. It works well, and I use it many times a day, both national and international. The latest bug fixes address most of the concerns that I have had (and I hope it won't crash as much), and although some aspects of the software are perplexing (such as making/joining conference calls), it all works well. And did I mention that it is FREE? (Version 2.8.0.438)

SMTIPS I've been using Skype 2.7.0.330 for a few months. I used it on Windows for a couple of months and now using on Leopard. The Mac version is reminiscent of the old ICQ in comparison between the Mac and PC versions. Extremely lacking in many features and interface perks that the Windows version has. Many features/preferences are just missing from the Mac version. Not nearly as easy to use as the Windows version is. When calling local phones within say 50 miles, I often get echo bad. It's very consistent. But when I call a lot farther away like to Canada, I get no echo and the quality is fine. I have a rock solid cable internet connection. I've complained about this the the makers, and they are clueless, they like to give generic umbrella answers and direct you to their hard to use website. And it takes them like a week to respond. And this version that just came out is still a beta. Apparently after all this time they still can't get a new release version and are relying on users to do their beta testing for them. No thanks. And I think BETA should be prominent in the TITLE not just in parentheses below in the "bug fix" listing. Because I don't do beta testing. Beta = BUGS. If a company wants me to do beta testing for something they are ultimately making money on, even if the app itself is a free download, then they should pay me to do their job. That's my take on it. As already said, I'm VERY unimpressed with the Mac version of Skype. (Version 2.8.0.438)

JESSEPRUDHOMME For a FREE application, skype is great. You only need to pay out to make calls to landlines/mobile phones. I had been using version 2.7.0.330 for over a year, and had always been able to have video/audio chats without any hassle. There were some bad days where I had some miserable connectivity, but I can't even be sure if that problem wasn't due to my own internet connection. I am now using version 2.8.0.324 beta, and will see how it goes. Keep in mind users, this IS a beta version. That means you may encounter some bugs. Basically, I'm supportive of skype developers in improving their application even further and will help them by installing the beta version on my computer. I will inform them of bugs that can be fixed - and this is how a community works. You shouldn't compare a FREE application to one that COSTS you money. Skype has been a simple, dependable, and free way for me to keep in touch with people. (Version 2.8.0.324b)

TOMIS As others have stated. Lots of problems. After the update it gave me alternating errors about not being to connect to a database and having the wrong password. How could it have the wrong password when the previous version logged in fine? Finally, after going 'round like this and re-entering my password a few times, it logged back in. And then subsequently removed about half my contacts. And then asked me if I want to pull in my contacts from Address Book (which I say no to on each update)! Avoid this version. M-RICK Skype 2.7.0.330 for Mac OS X a lot of problems ... This last update of Skype for Mac OS X, is very very bad ... - It takes a lot of CPU (around 90 % and even more sometimes !) and makes it warm up a lot and the ventilation is going like crazy, nice to make a chat ... - The sound cuts for a while from the incoming call at a regular repeating interval and for the same time (around 30 s). - The video freezes and get disconnected around every 5 mn for a few seconds. And all of this didn't happen with previous versions, it is only with the 2.7.0.330 and i am not the only one to have these problems since they are a lot of users i know and a lot of posts in the forums ... Mac OS X 10.4.11 / MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33 Ghz / 3 Gb RAM If it can't work well with that, well it works with nothing ! So it is absolutely not optimized at all for Mac OS ... just working, but not very well ... I am planning to move to something else that just works like Gizmo or iChat. (Version 2.7.0.330)

Sometimes the hang up button doesnt work and the other party needs to end the call. Skype is going backwards in its quality on the mac less stable with every release, more buggy and more of a challenge to deal with... a shame, the potential was there for great software (Version 2.7.0.257)

ALLBLUE This is a copy of a mail I have just sent to Skype: Mac platform betas getting worse I would like to know what has gone wrong with your mac development team. I've been a long time Skype user, in fact I have evangelised your service to friends, now your customers, because I was so impressed with your service. Of late however, the betas you are putting out are just horrible. 2.6.0.182 was simply unusable, very unstable (if a contact came online it would crash, when Skype Out connected it would crash, a piece of garbage really). The current version - 2.6.0.184 is not quite so unstable, but sound quality is awful, and the Skype phone I purchased 15 months ago, and which worked flawlessly with earlier betas, is now a pain to use because Skype takes over the audio input and keeps switching it down to minimum for some reason, making it inaudible at the other end. In system preferences you can see this happening - I drag the slider up to an acceptable level, and Skype pulls it back down again making the simple business of a phone call an exercise in stress management at both ends! Having just completed such a call, I just clicked on the open browser (Firefox) and that crashed - you are putting out sub-standard software, it's supposed to be beta not alpha, and I would like to know what is going on. Do you have a quality control department? In my experience when betas go backwards it is a sign that the developers are no longer bothering with it, time to look for alternatives. I don't know if your purchase by e-Bay is anything to with this, if some corporate executive has decided to abandon the Mac platform (a pretty foolish move if that was the case as the platform is expanding rapidly), or whether it is just sloppiness in your dev team, but this is simply unacceptable. VOIP is a maturing market, competitors are coming on stream, and although I have no desire to abandon Skype if you do not get your act together I will be left with no choice. I should point out that this is only audio, I have no webcam and hence do not use video. At the very least you should leave the latest usable beta available on your site, as many do, as I do, overwrite the old version with the new. I want some software I can use people, come on! Running OS 10.3.9 btw, and I will be posting this mail on both MacUpdate and VersionTracker to warn others of your current mac malaise. Please get your act together. Sincerely, (Version 2.6.0.184)

ALLBLUE Yes but I've been using this software for nearly three years - don't you think the word 'beta' should have been dropped by now? Look at the version number FFS! Or do you think permanently attaching the word excuses a sloppy development roadmap? 10.5.0 had plenty of bugs but that wasn't a beta, at what point are Skype intending to drop the word - 2.8.x, 3.0.x, ever? This is particularly pertinent because as a Skype Out customer they are holding my cash while putting out software that makes their service untenable. Hopefully this version will improve things back to where they were a few versions ago. I did not receive the courtesy of a reply from Skype to my mail btw. (Version 2.7.0.257)

ALEXIUSCA http://skype.com/download/skype/macosx/ there is no mention of 'beta' there, buddy. (Version 2.7.0.257)

ALLBLUE OK, if it's no longer a beta it should work. I've always been a fan of Skype, and VOIP in general, but the last few versions (not including this one, I haven't tried it out yet) have sucked. Mature software should not deteriorate like this. If additional functionality introduces instability, there should be an earlier, stable build available, so that their customers are not left with an unusable application while they get the latest build fixed. RORO01 When you are talking to someone on Skype (with or without video) other contacts who have not noticed your status is set to "busy" can still ring you. This is very annoying. Sending a text in this situation, obviously, isn't a problem. The developers should make it impossible to call you when you're already talking to someone else, like with iChat. (Version 2.7.0.49)

CPSTUDIO Its Friday August 17th and like some of you my Skype has suddenly stopped working - first time since I signed up 1 year ago. It says im offline, and refuses to go online (im stuck in a state of permanent grey "x") even though my computer is online and internet and everything else works fine. I dont believe this is a firewall problem or anything like that because everything was working peachy keen til yesterday - spontaneously broke down - no settings - nothing - changed on my side. SPACEMANSPIFF Skype support is awful. I've sent messages asking how to disable caller ID block and gotten no response, and I never heard back when tried to get the SMS to report my mobile phone number as the sender. Caller ID being blocked by default is ridiculous. I've signed up for Skype Pro and thought I would be able to solve my Skype problems using Skype's website; near as I can tell the only thing the website makes easy is billing. (Version 2.6.0.148)

AJK Are you referring to the ability of Skype to send your SkypeIn number as your Caller ID? If so then Caller ID isn't blocked and is gradually becoming available but it depends on the countries involved. It's working fine for me in the UK and I think it's reasonable that I had to activate it via my account page first. As for SMS caller ID well that's also working fine for me once activated via Skype Preferences. It took a while after activation for me but it is working now, although it might not always work depending on the network your sending to. Skype Support I can't comment on because after years of using Skype I've never had to use it. (Version 2.6.0.151)

ERIC WOEHLER Some more info on trouble-shooting Skype 2.xxxx.140 release. I purged additional languages and removed the obsolete PPC code, so was running Intel-only code. NO diff, same old same old, constant crashes. Then updated pre-bindings using Cocktail and MUCH better. Only crashes once or twice an hour! Huge improvement despite this process allegedly no longer required under OS 10.4. Suggest others with problems with stable release of skype try Cocktail/update prebindings to see if it helps them for stability. Is definitely better for me but is the ONLY app that crashes on me... almost like Windoze apps... lol cheers to all from sunny Tasmania

JB4 It works very well for me, both as a phone for long distance and as a conferencing tool for a three person hosted, live web cast. Since we are live,we could not tolerate any crashes. We talk to each other through a Skype connection, run that feed through a mixer with an "800" phone line and stream away. After trying several chats, Skype's sound quality far exceeded all the others. One thing I would like though; with my two partners who are using PC versions, we can only video conference one at a time, not all three together. Thanks to all! (Version 2.6.0.140)

PIZZACAKE I've just tested a MSI StarCam Clip Webcam on a G4 Mac Mini 1.25Ghz running Mac OS X 10.4.8. Cannot use the webcam's built in mic & video together because a loud ringing noise is produced. I have a usb mic and use that for sound input and the webcam only for video. Supplied Webcam Monitor App & Quicktime: Used the webcam monitor app that came with the driver to set the webcam resolution to 640x480. The picture is good (almost MacBook iSight quality) but the picture tears up quite a bit. Picture is good (confirmed with sister running Skype on a MacBook) and there is no tearing. M2ATMAC Skype would be perfect if it had a better user interface. It is clunky and by far is one of the worst and less user friendly of all apps that I use. M2ATMAC "This is the small price you pay for free phone calls using peer-to-peer technology" Hey if you just play around with your computer the get over it theory is okay. But I need every resource of my system available for my work. The Skype team should buy better servers instead of stealing our time. I consider this a disrespect from the Skype team. And that is why I don't buy Skype credits. (Version 2.0.0.3)

BILLYFUSTER "a better user interface. It is clunky and by far is one of the worst and less user friendly of all apps that I use." A singularly unhelpful comment. You should say what exactly bothers you, what strikes you as clunky about the interface, if another app does a better job. Back it up, and I'll understand the low rating you give it. FYI - you're protected from becoming a supernode if you work behind a router with NAT traversal. This is basic network security common sense. (Version 2.0.0.3)

AETNARIA It shouldn't... one of their features is that you can call landlines and cell phones from your computer. However, if your network is currently busy with other things or otherwise slow, I don't think the audio quality will be too hot. Allowing landlines and cell phones to call your computer is a different story - you'll need SkypeIn, which is a subscription service. http://www.skype.com/products/skypein/ (Version 1.5.0.77)

VEGGIEDUDE Your mileage will vary from day to day, sometimes it will be like you are calling next door, sometimes it will be lousy, like what you experienced. Such is VoIP. IZZAT What you should do is to got to the Skype user forum. There you will find people that can give you all the ins and outs on every question you will have and every problem encountered. I have Skype, but mostly I use my regular VoIP subscription, costing me 8.00/ month. It gives me free calls with in Sweden and a more reliable call quality. I also use it when I call home to Ireland, which I pay a bit more for then with Skype, but again the calls are a bit clearer. For me the big thing is Skype to Skype, since it is free and long distance calls which is cheeper with Skype then with my subscription. Skype is also good to use, I find, if you are sending anything bigger then 4,5 Mbit, since my internet provider blocks e-mails with large attachments. Good luck. (Version 2.0.0.2)
| Sep 14 2006 |
VEGGIEDUDE You are likely to hear her fine, because your download bandwidth is far greater than your upload bandwidth. I have cable, and my stats are: 2770 kbps download, 345 kbps upload. If you have something like a bit torrent going on in the background, it would explain your terrible experience. Be sure you are not uploading anything at the same time as you call out with Skype. This applies to Vonage or any other VoIP. (Version 2.0.0.2)

WALKI-TALKI.COM There are two "trunks" out there. One is the normal audio only beta trunk, and the video trunk. The video trunk is usually two ticks ahead of the audio. Current audio preview is 1.5.0.77, and I think the audio is 1.5.0.75. My impression is that the video preview is more in an alpha stage, but Skype is in a hurry to get it out because Mac market now has many options since iChat will do video with .mac, AIM and jabber networks. The audio only beta trunk is necessary because they completely retooled the GUI.

UMIJIN I really, really think that we need a better way to indicate such updates that are not updates, but betas. Or even betas from actual releases. Sure, putting a 'b' in the name is a sign of a beta, but it isn't always obvious, especially to inexperienced folks. And in this particular case, there isn't any 'b' in any of the Skype releases. So, MacUpdate - PLEASE consider HIGHLIGHTING the name of beta software in RED or some other way to make it clearer. Pretty please? (Version 1.5.0.77)
| Aug 31 2006 |
MACUPDATE ADMIN The listing for Skype on MacUpdate is already listed in red because it is a 'hotpick'. Sorry, but Mac Skype users need to convince the Skype devs to stop confusing people. That is where the problem lies, and it should be fixed at the root, so to speak, at the developers' end of things. (Version 1.5.0.77)

MACUPDATE ADMIN Any further suggestions should be emailed to us here at MacUpdate and not posted here, thanks. (Version 1.5.0.77)

SWORDFISH 1.4.0.49 is the official "Stable" version. 1.5.0.61 "Video preview" is a beta version with video chat preview. 1.5.0.75 is the latest beta version. It looks like the video chat function was pulled. Maybe there was a critical bug or the function needed more work. (Version 1.5.0.75)

PREFPANE When using *any* version of Skype (even the latest betas), there is something fishy going on with the echo cancellation on my iBook G4 12". When checking the in and out-settings in Skype preferences, I can tell that as input my internal mic is used, which is fully normal. But as "out" unit, the headphones is selected. When I try to change from headphones to internal speakers, which i would prefer to use, this setting does not seem to be saved. When checking the output option again, it is still marked as headphones. I have contacted Skype about this, but I have heard nothting from them, neither have I found any fix for this. My guess was that selecting "internal speakers" would help to minimize echo, but intead the feature is not even saved in the preferences. Aint that a bit weird when you have the possibility to select both? =/ Fredrik, Sweden (Version 1.5.0.61)

NYMPHE Actually, Skype 1.5 has great video functionality. The video quality was awesome. I tested it on an ibook and macbook. You can resize the video and you can use it on fullscreen too. You can anytime turn video on or off, which isn't allowed on ichat or yahoo messenger, I guess.. However, Skype takes all of the performance of the processor. I don't know why, but on an ibook 1 Ghz, I couldn't do anything else. Maybe because of the superior video quality.. But on the other side, on the macbook I've heard the fan, which runs continously. I couldn't come back to window from fullscreen modus. I had to force quit. maybe because the system was too busy to respond... I hope the future versions will be out of these problems.. ABSPJL No review yet of 1.5.0.52. This is now enabled for video using not just iSight cameras as in iChat, but cheap USB cameras. Moreover Skype users can now video conference not just with other Mac users as with iChat, but with PC users as well. It seems to work OK, recognizes my cheapo second-hand webcam and enables me to see my son who uses an iSight (he is a Mac user too). I've not yet tested it with a PC user. But this is the way to go. ALDORR I've been using Skype for over a year now on the Mac. I love the program and am looking forward to future versions. I have yet to have a single problem installing or running it on my iBook G4 or my MacBook Pro. Admittedly, the PC version is extremely well ahead of the Mac version. The main thing that ticks me off there is that there is no video support for the Mac. Doesn't it seem like there should be at least 1 program on the face of this planet that allows for easy video telephony between Apple and Windoze? Not yet. But if Skype does it they will be the first! Good luck and do it fast or else you're ruin your chance at ruling the universe! (Version 1.4.0.49)

GREENBEANPHILSOPHER According to the skype forum, the echo cancellation was just made permanent and it was not removed. The option dissapeared and was made an "always on" setting. The echo was horrible for me on this newest version. I read on the net, that as an ibook owner one of the speakers is directly below the built in microphone- thus the echo issue; that would make sence to me but it's not conclusive just some guy said it. I also read that some person downgraded to 10.0.0.7 and the echo dissapeared. Once again some guy said that. If i didn't have to chain my neck with headphones to kill the echo (that might work), or buy an expensive headset which will chain me up too, i'd say that this program is excellent. That excellent rating would be given despite the afformentioned post about skypeout billing issues, loosing all your contacts in version changes and skype maybe not being as technically and quality-based as gizmo (but i've never used gizmo and have absolutely no idea of it's quality). And also that skype seems to have a bit of an issue with memory hogging. Come to think of it my microsoft word program was talking to me about memory problems- has to be because of skype! Thus skype- 7/10 technically, 10/10 for being able to talk to my buddies with incredible voice quality for free oh yeah!. (Version 1.4.0.35)

HAPLO Skype, at one point, was good. Now it's a peice of crap. They removed echo cancellation and all of the advanced audio features, the program is no longer able to reclaim username/password information from older versions, and the sound cuts out constantly on a cable-cable connection. It's worthless now. In fact, when comparing the audio to iChat audio, it is only about half as stable, so bad that you can't actually get anything from what the other person is saying. Didn't used to be this bad, but it is now. (Version 1.4.0.35)

ANONYMOUS Please fix the echo problem. Skype could very well be the new solution to my recent telecommunication (company) nightmares! Also, bring skype-in to Canada. We only have, like, 4 different area codes. Or so. You know? Just the biggies? And while we're at it, can you add a feature so that I don't have to type +1 before dialing. Maybe something that would count the digits and could learn where you are likely to call. A "local" setting of some sort? Solid software and interface, though. Way to go. (Version 1.3.0.8)

TOURNESOL Great with all the updates, but have they removed echo cancellation? Its awful hearing your own voice seconds after you speak - echo cancellation fixed that, but now the function is gone. (Version 1.3.0.8)

IWONA I have been trying to install a new version of Skype (1.0.0.49.) on my G4 Mac but the application is not responding. I have enough disk space, system requirements are o.k. but the Skype icon is sitting uselessly in my Applications folder and I cannot communicate via Skype anymore. Installation of an old version of Skype was very easy - why installation of this new one is such an ordeal...? Please help me install Skype or I will give up on it. (Version 1.0.0.49)

DAVID ROSNOW Please give the new one a shot. That beta did not work with some versions of Mac OS X - it was a beta after all. 1.3.0.8 has been super solid so far. (Version 1.3.0.8)

JIM BISHOP Living in China, I am an experienced international Skype user. It can be a wonderful service. However, the Skype people still have not figured out how to run their billing department. Paypal will take your money, give you a receipt, and send Euros to Skype. Skype will take the money, and fail to credit your account. Skype will then not reply to many requests for service. This has been a problem for a long time. Read their forum. Skype is technically very good, but their business skills suck. Be prepared to lose several deposits no matter from where in the world you try to pay them. I am currently in Alaska and STILL cannot get their payment system to operate or their billing department to reply after days of trying. (Version 1.0.0.49)

TIM STRINGER Just to share another (fortunately more positve) experience - I purchased some credits earlier today using my PayPal account. My Skype account was credited literally within a minute. I'm based in Vancouver, Canada and don't currently have home phone service because of the Telus strike - so I'm thankful to have this alternative (as a bonus I just discovered that my Bluetooth Headset works well with Skype). CAMáN I have used skype for a year now and all my paymentys have gone through without a problem. My skype account have then been credited sooner then promissed too. I'm in Sweden working using my Irish VISA card. The only thing is that the software for Mac isn't finished yet for the Skype phone Cyber-K from VOIP. (Version 1.0.0.49)
