FIREMIN  GPSBabel has been part of my 'GPS Apps' folder ever since I got a Mac capable GPS. It does what it says: simple conversion of GPS files between formats. Very handy if you need to get data from a proprietary format into one that you can fiddle with, or, for example, convert to kml to view on Google Earth.

The "Babel Fish" of GPS apps : )

KIRKBOT  GPSBabel works wonders... I've enjoyed using it to visualize waypoints and tracks from my garmin legend c in google earth (with out $ubscribing to google earth plus). GPS babel will allow you grab waypoints tracks and routes off your GPS and save them as .kml (keyhole markup language, works with google earth). Also, will allow you to load waypoints you've added in google earth to your GPS (in googleearth save a marker or folder as a .kml, then import in GPSBabel with output as GPS receiver).

A ton of GPS formats are convertable, easy to use, free, and i've had no stability issues. Enjoy!

Note: When copying to hdd, be sure to include the unix exe and the app (just copy everything over)

ANONYMOUS  I don't see an email address to submit this comment to MacUpdate, but this is GPSBabel (as it says), but not MacGPSBabel which is what would be of interest to readers of this site. The 1.2.6 Mac version doesn't appear to have been released yet, at least it isn't listed on the GPS Babel site. GPSBabel is UNIX, not Mac.

JOBBY  The gpsbabel binary runs just fine on the Mac, as long as you don't mind using the command line — but the GPSBabel+ GUI is in the DMG as well…

AMAGINE  This is a great start for GPS file conversion on the Mac. Great work thank you!

Probably the most usefull file format for use beyond the "Mickey Mouse" GPS applications for Mac is the 'deliminated (comma)' format for input into text, spreadsheets, database, and GIS (Canvas 9, GRASS, Pythagoras).

To make this app an absolute killer would be:

1. GPS Sample - Produce a sample output from GPS that reads out all information that the GPS is able to output. ie. UTM zone, UTM co-ordinates, Projection, Long/Lat, time/date, Satellite info, waypoint codes, comments, etc. Perhaps depending on the GPS this is hard?

2. From Sample choose the fields and order in which those fields can be output into 'deliminated' format.

This would be huge! It would become the killer app for Rec GPS input into GIS.

Great work crew!

cheers!

MTNBIKER  I'm confused by this posting dated in late August. The last update was May 1, and the last beta was in July.

Also the write-up is way overblown as MacGPSBabel doesn't support two (and there aren't many) Mac program formats--MacGPSPro and HikeTech (TopoDraw/Link2GPS).

Also settings are not retained and have to be reset with each launch and in some cases each download.

The price is good--free. Not top value because for a little money, one can get a lot more funtionality. That said neither HikeTech nor MacGPSPro are very complete programs. i've yet to try National Geographic Topo.

MU ADMIN  Simple. The developer submitted it to us on the day it was posted here at MacUpdate. That other site that tries to be as good as MacUpdate is has version 1.2.1 listed as the most recent version of this app. Scratch your head over that.

Regarding the app's write-up, we can hardly know what is true and what is not with every software on our database.

ANONYMOUS  The developers of gpsbabel came across an out of date listing on a competing site (VT) that we had not placed there. As part of our efforts to rectify that situation it was decided to post a listing on MacUpdate.

The lack of support for Mac-specific formats is due to the fact that gpsbabel is a cross-platform program and at the moment only one of the developers works on a Mac. However, the program is open source and anyone who is willing to contribute code is welcome to do so.

CHRISD  I use HikeTech as well as any other program I can find for my Garmin 76S GPS on a Mac G4.

Having purchased and used NG Topo I can attest that HikeTech is a much better program for plotting your hikes and rides than NG Topo.. You can save all your tracks and routes on your Mac and upload them as you need them so your GPS is free from clutter.

I had a couple of problems with HikeTech in the beginning and their tech guys worked with me back and forth to solve the problem (fast) and they immediately posted the changes to MacUpdate. I asked them to add a couple of things and they did it immediately.

I use NG Topo for their maps (which are very good) and I use those maps exclusively in HikeTech.

For the Mac I have found that HikeTech is about as good as you can get.

I downloaded GPSBabel to convert some files and I am also disappointed that it does not work with the HikeTech files.. but at least these guys are trying and that is a LOT more than we (on our Mac's) had for many years.. which used to be nothing !!!

Keep up the good work guys. And McBabel please adopt your program to work with HikeTech files.

ANONYMOUS  HikeTech support was added to GPSBabel last fall and appeared in the most recent beta. It'll be in 1.2.5 which should be released any day now.

P.S. If you want to be heard by the developers, make those requests TO the developers and not here.
