EVERLAST3434  This app was completely indispensible on my mac...until Snow Leopard that is. Unfortunatley, it doesn work anymore. Sticky Windows acknowledged it on their website, but they are still trying to fix it i guess. With lots of other fixes for other stuff already finished by other companies for other software, you have to wonder why the dev isn't finished with this yet. Cmon already!

If you're not on Snow Leopard, definitely get this. It is worth every penny. It really should be incorporated into the OS as a standard.

SIGIL  This is from their website: "Snow Leopard status...

Sticky Window does not currently work in SnowLeopard. We need to rewrite a significant portion of the code base to make it compatible with Snow Leopard. Sticky Window relays on a hack of the Dock which is made significantly harder (really not viable). It is going to take time and we cannot estimate the length of the development time, given we don't have a workaround yet... however we are doing our best! And we love Sticky Windows as much as you do!"

So, we just have to wait. =)

DOOBIEXX  Yep, definitely not fun waiting but I can't wait just for this app to move on to snow leopard. Most other software has already been made compatable so although I am sure it is hard, it's going to happen eventually. Instance of an app relying on the dock is "quay," They had a fix within a couple days...

Sticky windows must be much much harder though as it's obviously taking a lot of time for the dev to release a version. I am satisfied knowing that he is working on it and not abandoning a great essential application, so I am much appreciation for him taking on the huge hurdle.

CUNEYT  @ ERUSSELL

You just described exactly what I had with my Mac OS, Sticky Windows is off system for now, but I still have a onetime/single crash of my Dock each time just right of after starting up, when all the menubar icons load.. my Dock disappears for a couple of seconds and then comes back with no further consequences. I am sure its a crash because when I search CrashReporter with Spotlight I find a file called Dock.crash.log

ERUSSELL  I had same problem... took days to identify. After the Intel security patch abut 4 days (@12/20) ago now my dock started disappearing (and then reappearing on its own) on first mouse click. That was the obvious issue but it broke further mouse clicks frequently, couldn't select properly, various unexpected behaviors. Finally deleted Stickie Windows (other apps too but it was the one after which the system worked). Then downloaded and reinstalled thinking maybe SW had been updated. Same problem. Now off system. I like the program have used it for years, but it needs updating now.

SJSW  I liked this utility in demo mode but the trouble started after buying a license (it's $19.95 by the way, not $15.95). After receiving the serial I went to the pref pane to register the program and...no dice. The pane just dims and none of the "options" on the pane are available, it just seems to lock up and I can't input the serial anywhere. That's not the worst thing though, because as someone who purchases a lot of shareware I can understand developers having problems keeping up with system updates, etc.(I'm running 10.5.4) and I generally cut them a lot of slack because most are good guys busting their butt to make their customers happy. What I do find inexcusable is not answering emails about a problem and after 2 emails to this developer I still haven't heard anything back. This after having to scour his site just to find an email address to write to in the first place. I wanted to write this as a warning to others because I broke my own rules about buying shareware when I purchased this so in that respect it's "my bad". The rules are if it's not a least 4 stars on MacUpdate don't buy it (with common sense used in the number of reviews) and if it hasn't been updated in less than six months...ditto. I broke both rules with this guy and I won't be breaking them again anytime soon.

MACNOOK  I'd love to be able to tell you what I think about this software, but it just isn't working for me.

If I turn it on, my dock no longer works (it won't pop up at all) nor does it work to drag windows to the edge of my screen -- they act normally and don't/wont turn into tabs. Turn off Sticky Windows and my dock works again.

Anyway, looks like something I'd love to use, but it's not working here.

AKROBAT  I found it a fairly usefull piece of software.

Haven't had any of the issues I've been reading about below... for me it works fine.

However since I've WindowShade installed for a long time it sort of makes Sticky Windows redundant. I only seem to realise Sticky Windows is there if I accidentally drag something to the side.

As for the pref pane... well, it's different if somewhat creative. Again I had no problems navigating around. I'm not sure what all the whining is about from the other posts - complaining ninnies! They sound like ex-Windows users who can't handle any other way of doing things. Jesus, just lighten up will you - he's trying something different!

GLOBETROTTERDK  The new version of Sticky Windows seems to have sussed part of the tab issues. The chosen tabbed window will open correctly at the same time as other tabbed windows revert to their tabbed states. Unfortunately, SW still has a problem with regards to tabbed windows reverting at log in. As it is, all of the windows just clump together in the middle of the desktop. IJACK  - If you click on a tab, and then mistakenly close it by using the close button, the tab disappears from the Desktop margin. This is very annoying, since most people use the window close button by habit. Re-clicking the tab is not always intuitive. It should be possible to add a setting for this in the Prefs Pane, to allow the user to close a Sticky Window either by clicking the tab, clicking the close button, or both.

- When you close ANY Finder Window with the close button, whether it's a Sticky Window or not, another random Sticky Window opens. Maybe it's not random. Maybe it's the last Sticky Window opened or something, but it's really annoying. Example: Open a hard drive or the Trash in a window. When you are finished you close it as normal, with the close button (remember these may not be Sticky Windows), and as soon as you have done that, one of the Sticky Windows opens. This should just be fixed, and not as a Pref setting.

- I just restarted my Mac and found all of the Sticky Windows open in the center of the Desktop, and no tabs in the Desktop margins. Surely as a Startup Item, it should be able to remember that they were in the tab position, and not all open.

SMORR  I bought the app and I think it is great but I REALLY HATE the preferences interface -- can't find things-- a preference panel should be functional and easy to use, not "pretty" -- I don't want to play hide and seek with my settings.

I wish the developer would provide the option of having a straight forward interface here.

MISTERLISTER  Totally agree.

While amusing to look at once, this is by far the worst prefpane i have ever seen. Save the fancy gfx for the app, not the prefpane.

I used to use this, back when it was a standalone app, and loved it. I figured i'd try the newest version, and was so put off by the nonstandard prefpane i almost immediately uninstalled it.

Fortunately for the dev, i recall the usefulness of this, and will try to set the prefs right the first time, so i never have to face that awful mess.

Sorry bro, i know that took some effort to make, but ewwww.

JEFFERY LAY  Unfortunately, window tabs do not hide when some full-screen apps are used, including VLC. When I'm playing a full-screen movie, I don't want the tabs hanging around, which unfortunately makes this app a dead-end for me. Plus the magenta colouring is horrible - if it was changeable I'd be a lot happier.

It's a potentially great app *as far as it goes*, but some additions are sorely needed before it can actually be a great app *period*.

EASER  I'm not having any problems with it. It seems stable and works as advertised. That being said, I do agree that it would be nice to be able to modify the appearance of the window tabs. I'd also like to be able to use hotkeys with this. And it would be great if those tabs were still there when I restart or log out. As it stands, I can do much of the same thing with WindowShade as I can with StickyWindows. (Neither program remembers collapsed or tabbed windows upon restart.) There's nothing really wrong with SW; I just don't have a compelling reason yet to go for it.

ROADTRIPDK  I am in general very pleased with this app. One thing that I would like to see however, is the ability of setting some of the apps that boot at login directly to a specified tab area for startup apps. This would be great for apps (with low overhead) like PandoCalendar that I have set to start at login, so that they can be referenced whenever the need arises, but you don't really want them taking up desktop real estate.

I am still running in demo mode, but will probably purchase this app.

LEX LUTHOR  OS style 'Tabs' are back, but without the old functionality...

For me it's a little too expensive, You can't drag a file from the finder or another

window to a tab/minized window - so it's not much use for file swapping etc...

You have to manually arrange windows in the center of the screen or they

will 'appear' where they were last dragged before being tabbed - mostly it

seems well off screen. Should be an align all tabbed windows to center and

tiled etc...

A faceless/dockless app would be much more appropriate than another

meaningless menubar type of interface.

Nice idea, but at half the price of Dragthing and it's ilk, it is a little thoughtless of the

developer to charge that much when he's adding no real productivity to a users workflow.

Alias's stuck to window edges is great but at $15 it's very expensive, when that's

all it does. The developers 'Unsanity' have the right idea/price on small interface

'haxies' like this $7 - maybe $10 if it adds something a little special into the mix

which this doesn't.

Half way through testing this - it tried to 'call home' - even when I had 'check for updates'

switched off - this is always very suspicious and unwelcome.

For those who haven't seem much shareware and miss OS9 style tabs try

Dragthing/Dropdrawers as these are in fact not just eye candy but very customizable utilities.

RICH  1. Can't get to "dockfun.com", because our proxy blocks all URLs containing anagrams of a certain four-letter word. Just in case you don't see it: "doCKFUn.com". Updates come from here, right? So I wouldn't get automagic updates. Whoops...

2. "Sticky Windows" is also a prime suspect to be blocked... ewwww. Aside from the fact it doesn't do what you'd expect from the name. For windows to be "sticky" (in a manner not involving bodily fluids), they would stick to one another. This is the way Photoshop toolboxes stick to parent windows, the way most X-Window window managers behave, etc. Sticky Windows is simply tabbed Aqua windows. It needs renaming. Seriously, "Sticky Windows" would be a great name for a porn site.

3. It would be nice if Sticky Windows's tabs were "sticky" themselves, and if they didn't ever overlap each other or the Dock. Also, if other apps could be requested to respect Sticky Windows's reserved screen edges, it would make sure their scrollbars don't get overlapped by tabs.

4. Sticky Windows steals focus unnecessarily. When "maximising" a window with Sticky Windows, it doesn't receive focus.

5. Sticky Windows doesn't always respect windows' positions: sometimes when "maximising", the window appears in the place where Sticky Windows took control of hiding it.

6. There needs to be a preference item to automatically remove tabs when "maximising" a window.

7. "Spring-loaded" had two meanings in OS9: you could click on a Finder tab and the window would pop up temporarily from the screen edge. Sticky Windows should do this, too -- otherwise it's not a fair comparison to the OS9 Finder's tabbed-windows feature.

8. It would be even better if you could tab windows by pressing the yellow minimise button while holding down Option.

9. Sticky Windows is still beta, but the nag messages ignore this fact, and demand payment.

a) I hate nag messages

b) I don't pay for beta versions.

c) I don't respond well to being told I can't do something until I pay. Especially when it's crummy BETA! The last time I took a test drive, I wasn't stopped from putting on the handbrake, opening the glovebox, boot and bonnet, switching on the radio, etc.

Surely the fact it's beta alone is reason enough to upgrade to the full paid-for version? When/if that arrives, of course...

Until then, I'm uninstalling as much of this as I can find. I've survived without it so far...

Features: Not sticky windows at all; doesn't do springy-tabs; needs quicker method of tabbing. (#2 7 & 8 above)

Ease of Use: user often needs to reposition tabs; poor focus handling; erratic window placement; nag windows. (#3 4 5 & 6)

Value: $15 for a beta? You're kidding! (#9)

Stability: No updates if your proxy nannies you. (#1)

PAUL  I like this a lot, but I would like to see some added preferences, such as:

1) When Sticky Windows is active, the ability to double-click the menu bar of the window to create a tab.

2) Tabs within individual programs hide with that program.

3) The option to have only Finder windows load at user login & the when you launch a program the tabs for that program show up only in that specific program.

These few things would make this a killer app that I think many people would find useful.

ANONYMOUS  Nice idea, and looks like a lot of work went into it, but I don't see the advantage over minimizing windows to the dock. Why would I want to have tabs scattered all over when I can have everything in one place?

ANONYMOUS  This is a really cool idea. It works well and I could see getting used to it.

There are a couple of issues, though. First, when you drag a window to the side of the screen to make a tab, and it disappears, and then you click the tab to get back to the window, the window appears dragged halfway across the screen and you have to drag it back in to use it. Which kind of defeats the convenience factor.

Second, it's YET ANOTHER status item menu. My menu bar just doesn't have room for any more! Please, someone, make a utility that doesn't want its own menu up there! How about making the menu optional, and offering a Butler plug-in to create a control menu for it?

Finally, the constant nags are so annoying that I've now quit the program and don't really want to use it any more. Not a great way to get someone to buy it.

ALEXIS   Very cool feature. The hardest part to get used to is not pressing the close button to make the window go away. A persistent window feature would be nice.
