EASER  This current Leopard release shows that the product is being tended to. Remember, the developer is also busy with Smart Scroll, which a lot of people enjoy using. Given that this is probably the developer's primary product, I'm sure a lot of time and resources have to go into maintaining that.

I know from conversations with the developer that some significant changes are being worked on for future versions of 3D-Space. The current version was sufficient for me to become interested.

I've seen some reviews at other sites that tend to dismiss 3D-Space without genuine consideration. My two cents is that people have preferred styles of managing information. Some like Apple's Finder. Some like the terminal. Some prefer split-panes, such as ForkLift. Others like the customization of PathFinder.

To say that any one product is bad or mere "eye candy" misses the mark. I prefer a visual representation of information, and 3D-Space provides a very useful way for me to process my data and information. Just because the approach does not work for some does not mean it does not work for others.

JETFIREDX  I like to evaluate every release of this to see what is new. This version seems to have brought some nice speed improvements in the rendering of folders / icons with MANY images. I'd also like to thank the author for not limiting the evaluation time like others do...one request though? During the evaluation it is not possible to (or didn't seem to be immediately) to do any file / folder manipulation. Could this be enabled for say files of 10k or less and a limit to be able to move / copy / delete 10 folders per evaluation? How else could I decide if using 3D-Space VFS will be right for me or not?

Some other visualizations would be nice too. The flat plane is okay, though to me nothing more than an extention of the same 2D space we work in everyday...just tilted. (Although silky smooth in movement now on my MacBook.) Could the individual folders be mapped to spheres, cubes, etc... that could be fully rotated around rather than just "flown over"?

Thanks for the hard work on this and I look foward to playing with future releases.

MIGUEL  I'm in agreement regarding the folder/file manipulation restrictions, I thought the software was handicapped and couldn't do it.

I think it's essential to have full features in evaluation version if you don't wanna scare away potential users.

MAC_CRAZY  Has any one heard of future updates for this software? Seems to be a really cool app but last update has been a while..

PENNYHEAD  I had to completely reinstall 10.4.3 and had a few problems getting 3D Space to work. The developer was very responsive in helping me to get it to work again. When the progam was not there for a few days, I relized how I have come to depend on it. It is a great application. You can put things in there that you do not access often and keep your regular dock tidy. This software has many features and I look forward to future incarnations.

FLARCH  Love this thing, as far as it's gone.

Some criticisms are valid about it being high on the eye-candy scale, but still needing more meat-&-potatoes functionality to be a serious finder/dock substitute.

Having a 3D space take over the whole window was kind of disappointing.

I was pleasantly surprised at how stable it was, though it was something of a resource hog.

Far too cool to let drop. I'm anxious to see it mature!

ANONYMOUS  This app. seems unnecessarily complex to be a normal launcher (it has nonstandard launcher features such as spring-loading), but far to simple to be a Finder substitute. As a Dock substitute it seems unnecessarily confusing and requires an unusually steep learning curve, and I could spend all night making a list of fairly basic and necessary things the Finder can do and this can't (I'll mention a few, to give you an idea: inability to open multiple windows, to do such simple things as create duplicates, access any level deeper than the Home folder (except the computer's Application folder), access other mounted volumes, move files or folders up the nested-folder hierarchy as well as down it). So it's really neither fish nor fowl, and not very satisfactory in either capacity. It's really just another multiple dock implementation that's gotten a little big for its britches.

ZIGGY  Try drag and drop with the option key to create duplicates.

Do File:New Window to open new windows.

The other things you mention are there too, check the help screen and/or preferences.

ANONYMOUS  This app does what it says, but it simply isn't anything groundbreaking. The fact that you can rotate the camera and view your icons in a POV-type fashion is overshadowed by the fact that when the application has a real chance to shine with a 3D engine is completely wasted. I'm talking about navigation, here. Someone did a demo a few years ago with an actual 3D navigation app, where the folders were represented with circles and when you navigated, it branched, animated, and filled the folder you switched to all very fluidly. This application lacks any fluidity. I already have a Finder, and this application seems to be rather silly because it's really NOT all that different.

ANONYMOUS  In fairness to the author of this app., I've only had this up and running a day or so and I'm not familiar with all its ins and outs. But here's my initial take, anyway. As an alternative to the Finder, it's stunningly attractive from a visual point of view. But I'm not at all certain it can do everything that the Apple desktop/dock combo does, and I'm less certain that it can do very much that the Apple interface can't do. I'm also concerned about the cost of this app. I don't mean the money, $30 seems reasonable, but CPU and GPU requirements, and memory consumption. So, a bit regretfully, I'll probably wind up passing. If I'm ever going to go for a Finder substitute I need to be convinced that it is genuinely superior to the Finder, not just different.

ANONYMOUS  "Wow what a nice app, would be great if it were free, but, it's not, so just stick with the dock..."

Applications take time and lots of learning to make. Most people will gladly pay $10-20 for a dinner, and $8-10 for a movie, why do people complain so much when they are asked to pay $30 once for an application?

JASON  Because people have become giant hypocrites. They complain all day long about how much they have to pay for stuff, yet when it comes to their own pay, they think they are entitled to it all.

Welcome to the giant world of entitlement and selfishness. At the rate products and services are minimalized and diluted, everything will be free some day.

NICK M  Or may just possibly be because they don't feel it's worth the money, in which case why would pay.

Saying this is not a crime, (mind you, neither are the sour-faced rants that you two seem to enjoy stewing in).

MACMAN  No, but it's refreshing to see that some people are not spoiled adult children who seem to think they're entitled to a free ride. The other portion of the spoiled rotten bunch simply whine and gripe because they've been coddled far too long by their parents, and don't know how to ask for something (perhaps a feature) nicely.

These "sour-faced rants", as you call them, are all too common, and incredibly annoying.

This particular shareware author has been around for quite a while, and I particularly enjoyed his Startup Doubler product for Classic. He knows what he's doing, and releases a polished product.

NICK M  It's one thing to whine, it's another to whine about whining. It's yet another to castigate others as being spoilt because they don't feel a product is worth the cash.

I think it's 3D-Space is all right, but not something I would use on a permanent basis, although (incredibly), I read others opinions on the software, and feel no need to get upset whatsoever, in fact, I value different points of view. Radical eh? :D

Although, admittedly, if everyone concentrated on the actual software rather than blab-lyrical about what everyone else thinks, then MU would be FAR less entertaining.

FLARCH  Nevertheless, there are WAY too many people complaining on sites like this because they have to pay as little as $4 for software which likely took many many man-hours hours to code, test, and debug. So much of the software is worth some money even though relatively small, because the developer is one or two individuals with real jobs.

Rarely are cool little utilities and such cranked out by companies that can expect to sell a few million units!

I wonder how much coding most of the plentiful whiners have done.

ANONYMOUS  In this case, the product seems reasonably priced (obviously it took a huge amount of work to write it). Sometimes, though, shareware is ridiculously overpriced. It's a simple Economics 101 idea that you can make more money selling a lot of units cheaply than a few at a higher price, but some software authors just don't grasp that basic point. So sometimes, yes, I do think the criticisms one sees on this site are justified.

MEKKEREMEK  the developer should take a look at the filebrowser used in the first Jurassic Park film and re-invent that one. The bigger a file, the larger it is etc... that would add something... this is only eye candy.

FAMTHERAPIST  This thing is becoming a way of life. My eyes do better with the good size of the icons and it helps me to see everything laid out the way it is. I really recommend this app. The Dock is too crowded and clumsy.

ANONYMOUS  It's essentially a bunch of Docks stacked up, nifty looking, not very useful, and it covers the whole screen.

Just put a folder full of aliases in your dock, and you've got the same functionality. It might not look as nifty, but it's a heck of allot more efficient. And it's free.

ANONYMOUS  Sorry, I don't get it. What is the purpose of this psuedo 3D "thing." It isn't in 3D, and it pales in comparison to the many attempts to code these types of applications back in the 90s.

Make it 3D. Heck, watch Jurrasic Park, they have a better one with nickel and dime processors.

ANONYMOUS  Seems to have a problem with dual monitors and drawer postion. Ie, I have a laptop with a second monitor. I have positioned it at the bottom. Now, I can't find it. If I right click on the app in the dock, I can bring the drawer up, however, as soon as I put my mouse over it, it disapears.

NEOHX_7  I totally rearranged the way I use the dock after putting this on. The dock is now merely an application switcher and holds some folder shortcuts. This is what the dock should have been. It of course needs some polishing, but I'm already signed on.

MISTERBRISBY  It needs more features, but it is a very nice app considering its rather small size.

What needs to be added:

1. The ability to move or look around in the 3d space, because sometimes items can accidentally be placed on a square somewhere outside your sight and theres no chance to get hold of it again, cause you don“t see it.

2. The ability to zoom into depth of the 3d space.

3. Items dragged from Finder to 3d space should ALWAYS become aliases because it sucks when original files are removed to somewhere else just because of an app.

4. It would be great if you were able to change the size of a 3d space (square x square).

But aside these things, its a really nice dock-replacement and app-launcher.
