TIMMYB What I am saying is that Apple should be consistent in their update policy. They skipped a very important security update for Tiger (the recent 2009-006) but then released this new version of Safari 4.0.4. It creates the impression that Tiger is still supported, when in-fact it is not (and continuing to Surf the web with Safari 4.0.4 is NOT SAFE) (Version 4.0.4)
| Nov 12 2009 |
TIMMYB I really don't understand why Apple made this version available for systems prior to 10.5.x This creates the impression that it is ok to use Safari on a 10.4.x system. Unfortunately, this is not the case, since Apple did not release a Security Update 2009-006 for 10.4. 10.4.x now has several unpatched vulnerabilities which make it unfit for use. (Version 4.0.4)

AN.ONYMOUS There are two good reasons to dislike Safari : - Safari does not work on several websites where MS Explorer is the basic reference (typically on Hotels' reservation websites) - Safari prohibits using Explorer on a Mac. Indeed, it appears that it is following Apple's demand that MS has stopped developping and providing Explorer for the Mac. (Version 4.0.3)

MISHA MS stopped active development of IE for Mac before Safari came out. IE for Mac was always one sold rev behind the Windows version, and it would take 1-2 years to catch up. Apple got fed up and did its own thing. And MS seemed only too keen to officially be able to drop development of something it had long ago unofficially stopped developing. IE for Mac was consuming resources of the Mac BU without generating any revenue. Can't really blame them... and MS knows first hand what happens when you make your browser the default (as they did with IE on Windows, and Apple then did with Safari on Mac). There's always Firefox. (Version 4.0.3)
| Sep 5 2009 |
AN.ONYMOUS I understand your point Misha. However, as I could not make reservations in Mexican Hotels using Safari AND Firefox, I managed (with much difficulty) to download an old copy of IE for Mac, and it worked perfectly! In other words, Safari was not even able to replace the old IE. While I was surfing to get an old copy of IE for the Mac,I remember that I found a site where it was explicitly stated that MS had stopped providing MS for Mac following Apple's specific demand. As I had other urgency, I do not remember exactly where this was stated, but I should say that it was on a MS official link. My advice, if you are travelling and you need to secure urgently a hotel reservation, keep a copy of MS IE for Mac in your machine. (Version 4.0.3)
| Sep 6 2009 |
MISHA If a site is not loading properly under Firefox or Safari it is the fault of neither browser but rather of the site for being so horribly coded... The story about IE is that Microsoft had basically abandoned it (but not officially killed it). More than a year after IE development stopped (but not officially), Apple released Safari. After Safari was out, THEN MS "officially" killed IE. But IE was already dead. Safari was just a convenient excuse to some how justify why they had stopped working on it. (Version 4.0.3)

GORDON142 OK, any site written specifically for IE is not going to work on such an ancient version of IE for Mac. It doesn't even support most of the proprietary functionality of IE on Windows (ActiveX, for instance) that would restrict other browsers. It sounds very much like the site was just looking for an IE user agent. The user agent in Safari can easily be switched. The days when IE was required for viewing large swathes of the web are past. Firefox adoption is nearly 50% in some countries, so trying to make money on the web and not supporting other browsers just doesn't work anymore. Since Firefox generally has very good standards support, sites designed for Firefox usually work fine in Safari. That said, even Safari itself has enough market share these days that most of the big sites test and tweak their sites specifically for Safari compatibility. (Version 4.0.3)
| Sep 19 2009 |
AN.ONYMOUS I can willingly admit that Safari works fine in most cases. Even though I do prefer Camino by far. However, I cannot agree with the opinion that Safari's market share warrants that everybody cares for having a Safari compatible website. The hotels I was talking about are among the best (although atypical) in the world (eg the best in central Mexico) and, being 100% booked months ahead, they just do not bother or even wish to hear about unhappy Safari or Firefox users. I was just furious when I read that it was responding to Apple's demand that Microsoft made IE UNACCESSIBLE to Mac users. Even if downloading an old Mac version of IE is rarely necessary, it should stay a possibility. Therefore, if Apple asked for IE's unaccessibility it is not Mac users' friendly. (Version 4.0.3)

AARGL I found the cause and the workaround for the "forever loading" problem: I have SafariBlock installed (I'm very happy of it!!!), and tried to disable it, but it was the same. After a while the loading stops and you've got an error messave, you go to the Windows/Activity menu and copy the URL of the unloading files (in my case it was http://www.skyboardmedia.com/i/skyboard_for_footer_on_network.gif, but I suppose it could be anything else). Provided you have SafariBlock installed, you add manually the URL and the page loads instantly. For me there was only one site, that I use a lot, causing me this problem with Safari 4.0.3 (and not before). (Version 4.0.3)

I had so much problems with my Safari. It stopped working, and I found out by accident how to get rid of the dialogboxes that pop up when you double-click your downloads. In /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ you'll find a file called VerifiedDownloadPlugin.plugin. What I did, was to move this to the desktop, and it seems I got a much easier life (because I download a lot, and I really *do* know that I downloaded the files, I doubleclick, from the internet). -Does this work for anyone else ? PACMAN I upgraded to 10.5.8, didn't expect Safari 4. In the beginning I was impressed, and happy about it didn't have those nutty top-tabs. But after a short while, I got annoyed with the URL field and the search field. My up/down arrow keys don't jump to the beginning/end of the search fields anymore. Instead I get a drop-down menu, where I can choose some previously entered text. I don't need that at all. It's sluggish, it covers the current web-page and it takes my focus away from what I wanted to search for. Since it doesn't work like I'm used to, I started looking for alternatives. I knew about OmniWeb already, but I don't like the feel of OmniWeb (although, it's a great browser). ...Anyway, I found Shiira, which looks quite promising!! Check it out. PACMAN Clicking the title-bar of a window should always behave the same way. if accidentally clicking where the close-button is, you lost the contents of a tab. You are right, there's not much space on a laptop, however, it does not justify changing the user-interface drastically for one single application. :) -Instead Apple could make an option to 'flatten' the other bars, make the bars 'expand' when the mouse is near them and include a fullscreen option, etc. I have a 12" PowerBook, and I'm perfectly happy without the top-tabs - I don't need them. I still think they're nutty, though. -But that's my opinion and I want to keep it! ;) (Version 4.0.3)

> What kind of bug/trouble reporting doesn't include the relevant hardware? Can't hurt, though I doubt hardware matters when troubleshooting *most* Safari issues. I think it's more relevant to know if plug-ins, input managers, haxies, etc. are installed. And having examples of specific sites that trigger problems. And testing with a generic account (e.g. temporarily enabling Guest on Leopard) can help determine if certain problems are user-specific or system-wide; not just with Safari but most other apps. Btw, I've also noticed the page loading indicator not stopping after pages seem to be properly loaded though am not sure exactly when it started happening. When it distracts me reloading the page usually stops it and helps ensure the page really had been loaded. (Version 4.0.3)

ROBOTANK I realize that sometimes it's important to include hardware details, but in this case I couldn't see such information being relevant. I'm using an Intel Mac that's less than 2 years old, and it seems unlikely to me that a glitch like this in Safari would be related to my hardware. What I should have done was mentioned what plugins I have installed, as it seems now that the source of the issue is Safari AbBlock. MELMAN FLINK It's always important to include hardware specs, especially given that this version covers such a long timeline in Mac history. As for plug-ins, anyone who is using plug-ins that are not mainstream (i.e., Apple sanctioned or Flash) and reports problems without FIRST disabling said plug-ins does a disservice to fellow Mac users and discredits themselves. If you must use 3rd party plug-ins that are not Apple sanctioned, please do you own troubleshooting first before running around with your hair on fire.
| Aug 12 2009 |
ROBOTANK Yikes. I was indeed wrong, but try not to exaggerate so much. I didn't freak out, and I don't think that a brief comment on MacUpdate is really doing anyone a disservice. If you feel that a question posted here is silly or contains inadequate information, you are free to ignore it. As for the plugins, until Apple provides an approved plugin architecture or adds some badly needed features to Safari, I do feel it's necessary to use non-sanctioned add-ons. (Version 4.0.3)

(Which I assume is a "Cookies" problem too). Safari would almost always ask me to sign-in to groups and such, when I accessed a group's site... but if I "Refreshed" the page, then it found the ID Cookie and "Remembered" that I was already signed-in... seems everything is groovy now (knock on wood). After I'm on it for a while, I get an almost blank window with an error message that says something about a "String" or something... and I can't go to any YT pages after that, until I restart Safari. And I miss the Progress Bar... anyone have a haxie to bring it back? (Version 4.0.2)

EXORZIST I don't think that youtube (which was under heavy changes lately?) is a valid reference for Safari's functionality. Since I have a very fast internet-connection I don't care much about "the progress-bar". Also, the website loading state is very well reflected by the new, non-obstructive "thingy" at the right side of the address-bar. I assume Apple had the human guidelines to reduce the amount of GUI-Elements which preyed for user's attention and this is some result. Just loud thinking. Anyway, all that stuff is considered to change all the time. So be prepared for more losses or gains :) (Version 4.0.2)

Thanx for the input... I'm curious if my Safari doesn't do something that everyone else's does? Re: "...website loading state is very well reflected by the new, non-obstructive "thingy..." My little rotating "thingie" is either on, grayed out, or off. It doesn't seem to represent any sort of "loading state" at all... except "Loading," "Finished Loading." Am I missing something? (Version 4.0.2)
| Jul 10 2009 |
EXORZIST "loading state" may be the wrong term. The information how the thingy does its thing is somewhere commented here on MacUpdate. I remember it's blue-ish when it contacts the server and when the server has responded it looses the blue-ish and while receiving data it changes from dark-gray to gray and hopefully fades out of existence. I think the amount of data already loaded is reflected by the gray-tone? Something like that. (Version 4.0.2)

PTRIX Ever since the Safari 4 beta, and continuing throw to 4.0.2, i've been experiencing a strange bug on my system whenever i enable the Private Browsing feature. Basically, when I enable it, it seems to automatically change Safari's security settings from 'Never Accept Cookies' to accept cookies 'Only From Sites I Visit', but without alerting me to the modification. And needless to say, i don't know why accepting cookies during what should be a private session would be in keeping with the concept of "Private Browsing". This did NOT happen in Safari 3.x, and I am at a loss to figure out why this is happening in Safari 4. I have Saft installed, but this happened before I installed it, and also happens when i uninstall it, so i don't think Saft is responsible. am i the only person this is happening to, and if not, can anyone explain why Safari 4.x is behaving in this strange way? I have sent bug reports to Apple during the time Safari 4 was in open beta, and have sent bug reports every upgrade since, but they haven't fixed it, which leads me to believe that this behaviour is either intentional, or something's wrong with my system. Not sure which... (Version 4.0.2)

SJK Maybe you're using some other app that shares cookies with Safari but doesn't have private browsing? (Version 4.0.2)
| Jul 9 2009 |
STAINER The term "private browsing" is easily misunderstood - particularly when the concept of second-party session cookies is misunderstood as well. A cookie that only lives through one browsing session does not compromise privacy any more than simply visiting a website. All your movements on a website during a private browsing session can still be tracked by the website. By turning off cookies altogether you're only making it slightly harder. The only way a second-party cookie can compromise privacy is when used to track users from visit to visit across multiple sessions. Private browsing prevents this. Due to the amount of web applications that simply won't work without cookies, I can see why Apple instead of creating a separate preference set for private browsing, just enforced the cookie option ensuring a minimum level of functionality. Whenever a Safari tab or window is closed during private browsing, the history and cookies for that tab/window is purged (as long as the site in the closing tab is unique across all windows). The same happens when Safari is quit or private browsing is turned off. Third party cookies on the other hand is something everyone should reject (IMHO) (Version 4.0.2)

MACTECHHEAD I haven't had any problems since using version 4.0 and the newest 4.0.2 is equally as fast and stable for me. I don't use plugins and didn't experience any of the problems related to the 2 recent updates. Super fast and rock solid, no complaints from me. PARTHIBAN M It's a really fast browser, possibly the fastest on the mac in theory. In reality however, for me its been a mixed bag. Some sites, that are more javascript heavy, Safari is blistering fast (v4), and on other sites, Firefox seems to be just as fast. This version of Safari still has compatibility issues with a few sites, so its not my daily choice of usage, however the new FF3.5 has some irritating issues of its own. Perhaps my biggest gripe about this version of Safari, and just the trend that safari is following in general in terms of looks, is that it does NOT look like a native mac app. Embarrassingly, Camino looks 100% native, compared with Safari v4. I think Apple needs to re-think the UI of Safari, and take it in another direction, before making any significant feature choices. Yes, this V4 is built on Cocoa, but it looks a little bit like a Java app, as it doesn't 'fit' well aesthetically with the rest of the system apps. Firefox has always had this issue, so no point in mentioning that. Camino in my opinion has been the only browser on the Mac to NAIL the streamlined UI to match exactly with the style and elegance of OSX. And also this might just be my system, so I'm not entirely sure of this, but I'm getting much more beachball under Safari V4 than Firefox 3.5 OR Camino ß2 combined. This still happens even after literally resetting Safari. So I don't know what the issue is. This is on the non-unibody MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz (ver 3,1) with 2GB of ram. This only appears to be the problem with Safari, all other browsers work without beachballing every couple of pages. (Version 4.0.1)

CALL ME YO DADDY I completely agree with you. Apple made a serious mistake in the UI department with Safari 4. I was greatly disappointed when I could no longer choose the elegant and much more useful aqua progress bar instead of a spinning indicator in the address bar. Also I loved having the chose between tabs at the top or bottom. Apple took all of that away with the final release. This is why so many people cling to Firefox because Mozilla believes in giving you a ton of choices. The Camifox theme and Stylish for Firefox gives me a very clean and more Mac like UI. Apple can keep it's Safari. (Version 4.0.2)

EXORZIST Sometimes, it's obvious, sometimes it's not. If you are a web-developer, you can use "Top-Sites" to present your own web-sites, it looks very good and I'm sure it will make a fantastic impression to your (future) client. You should also enable the "Developer"-menu and play with that. BTW., you can also ctrl-click a part on a website & choose "element-information" which shows you that "object" in the source-code. EXORZIST The javascript-bookmarks I use to resize the browser front window doesn't work anymore if you have a TAB in a window! This reminded me of "Netscape Communicator 4.x", because they had all the time such silly misbehavior. I wonder why this is happening with Safari, because it's top-software in a top-environment, so this makes no sense at all. I can't understand why the developers haven't fixed this yet. (Example: javascript:self.moveTo(0,0);self.resizeTo(800,screen.availHeight);) (Version 4.0.1)

Once I ditched the plug in files, plist files etc. associated with that I tried installing Safari4 again and this time wowee. It seems to be working fine. I had quit bothering with Sogudi so long ago I had totally forgotten it. (Version 4.0)

ERUNNO I have now used Safari 4 for a couple of days full-time and would like to share my impressions with others now. + Let's get the obvious out of the way first: It's fast, page-loading times are quite low and web applications like Google Mail/Reader and others load and feel faster than with Safari 3. + Memory usage is quite improved. Safari 3 was always for me quite a memory hog which could grab easily 500+ MB after *one* day and it still kept climbing. Safari 4 uses 300-400 MB of RAM (give or take 40). This seems still much at first glance but at least it *stays* in that range even after extended use (several days without restart). After a couple of hours non-usage with few tabs open it even reached 200 MB again. My best guess is that the fixed amount of memory is used for caching preview images (top sites, cover flow history) and indices for full-text history search. Anyway, good work, Apple. + Safari now stalls less when some tabs are active (beach ball). It's still present but not quite as distinctive as with the predecessor. + Full-text search is quite useful and the cover flow makes it easy to locate the page one is looking for. + Scrolling is always smooth even with complex layouts or lots of active content (e.g. Flash). + In case of a tab overflow (too many tabs) the tab drop down list features a divider which separates the visible from the non-visible tabs. It's attention to detail like in this case which I like Apple for. + Tabs on top has been removed. The implementation was stillborn with too many apparent usability problems. Since there are more ways to tackle the problem tabs on top tried to solve (more vertical space for content) Apple should maybe take tabs in a sidebar into consideration. + Snap back has been simplified. I know that some people will rightfully (!) complain about this reduction in functionality but senile people like me are overburdened with the old implementation. Now it's more apparent what it is meant for (go back to Google results) and I started to use it more often. + Better result arrangement for matches in the address bar (see also negatives). + Very stable. I only had one crash and that was when trying to open 34 tabs at once. Now, the browser should still be able to handle this but otherwise I had no problems with stability. + MailGrowl works with the updated WebKit component again without crashing Mail each time a new mail arrives. Maybe there are some Growl users in Apple after all. - I was hoping that Safari's address bar would work like Firefox' "Awesome Bar". To my disappointment you still can't do arbitrary substring search in the URL and site title. In fact, the address bar works exactly as in Safari 3 (matching only the start of an URL) but the results are presented in a much improved way. - Top sites are slow. I use top sites with the maximum amount of previews and sometimes I have to wait up to 5 seconds until it's displayed after opening a new tab. There's also a small delay after selecting a site before it's displayed. A new tab should be instantly usable, something both Chrome and Firefox (in an version after 3.5) have identified as a critical UI requirement. Hopefully Apple will tackle this problem in one of the subsequent releases. - Top sites in general don't add much to my browsing experience compared to visual history. - One thing that really baffled me is that Safari 4 still uses the modal dialogue when asking if a password should be saved. The non-modal dialogue in Firefox and Chrome is such an *obvious* usability improvement. Maybe Apple shouldn't have messed around with tabs on tab and instead concentrated on less debatable improvements. - Another annoyance: When the address bar or a text field is selected in a tab you can't use the keyboard to cycle through the tabs (you have to deselect it first). Firefox does this better. - You still can't sort bookmarks alphabetically. In 2009. :-/ - Still no maximize window functionality. Fit to content simply does not work in a tabbed interface where each site has a different width. - It's visually not clear enough when surfing a site with encrypted connection (https). Firefox and Chrome are better in this regard. This is a solid release, but it still has an apparent lack of ambition on the front end side. The major work was done on the WebKit site while the browser itself received mostly cosmetic work with some obvious improvements on other browsers being left out. (Version 4.0)

ERUNNO Some disadvantages I mentioned to add in my review. It doesn't change my review just reinforces my point that Safari 4 displays a severe lack of ambition: - Still no automatic restoration of the last session. - There's still no obvious way for adding new MIME type handlers. I want Safari to open torrent files directly with my bittorrent client of choice. - Removed the ability to always display the tab bar. I find it the appearing and disappearing of the bar distracting. - Reopening a closed tab with its history is still not available. (Version 4.0)

SOUTHPAWAMI It may seem as if I was harsh in my review. I will admit that with the possible exception of Camino 2, Safari 4 is perhaps the Apple-like browser available. Image wise, Safari looks better when you first run it then any other browser. In the case of Opera 10, you have to make display tweaks to make it enjoyable rather than bearable. In the case of Firefox, you have to get plugins/addons and install them. In the case of Camino 2, the more you use it, the more you like it. And in the case of Omniweb 5.10 Sneeky Peek, you have to keep trying to play with the options little by little before you see how much a pleasure it can make browsing the web each day. So, Image-wise... first run, Safari wins hands down. Content-wise... various tools and options built into the web browser to help you be more productive, Safari is nearly in last place. As I lean heavily towards content, I can't see much reason to use Safari 4, when options like Opera 10 beta, Omniweb 5.10 Sneeky Peek, and Camino 2 are out. (For example, to even have what I consider basic options you would have in many browsers, you've got to install Glims.) Safari wins image. Safari watches all the browsers blaze ahead of it in content strength. (Version 4.0)

SOUTHPAWAMI Safari 4 is an average browser. - It has basic tabs features - It has a normal personal bar - It has a URL and google search on the same bar - top sites... same as Opera, Google Chrome, and the Firefox Plugin... except slower - passes acid 3 test... same as Opera 10 beta and Omniweb 5.10 Sneaky Peek - functions with dashboard - downloads are organized - no tab location changes like Opera or Omniweb - no thumbnail tabs like Omniweb - no key function like opera... autofill is useless when more than one person uses the same web browser Opera 10 is better. Omniweb 5.10 is better. Camino 2 is better. (Version 4.0)

LIGHTFOOTADV Overall I like it. I didn't try any of the betas, so the final v4 is a new experience for me. It does seem noticeably faster than v3. It also seems very stable. The top sites feature isn't really something that important to me. Unlike at least Chrome's similar feature, top sites seems to load all of the listed sites in real-time, which takes several minutes, instead of just caching thumbnails from your last visit (which seems more logical). Kind of odd there isn't anyway to control how it works. It does however list when a site was updated though I guess. The reload/stop button is gone, and instead there's a reload button on the right-hand side of the address bar, which seems unusual. It's in an annoying place now. If I really had to make a suggestion about what feature I would most want would be dividers in the bookmark menu, or a Chrome-like download panel that would appear at the bottom of the window. It's an improvement in performance though. I'm not unhappy I upgraded. (Version 4.0)

PIK80 Apple added one of their best interface ideas when they introduced tabs that were integrated into the task bar and then they removed it for the final release. There was no reason that they couldn't have added this feature as an option under the tabs preferences but they decided to just remove it out right. There was absolutely nothing wrong with tabs on top. It was a wonderful solution and I am looking forward to it being implemented across all of Apple's apps. HALEAKALARI the new interface is atrocious. first off on 10.4, you have a "unified" toolbar, but the status bar is brushed metal. that's nothing though. my real gripe is this: we mac users are not allowed to have a frucking stop button on the toolbar of our default browser. it has to be present only on mouse-over in an integrated-progress/address bar? it just has to. that's funking ridiculous! it's counter-intuitive. this is changing something, for the sake of change itself. which is *not* change for the better.. it's the gui-design equivalent of saying: "yeah, we make the fastest, sweetest, most kickin' sneakers in the world. but we decided to use shattered goat-carcass instead of rubber for the soles, because it looks nicer. it might hurt, make no sense and it'll take you much longer to get where you need to go, but... y'know, it looks better." we don't even have the option of using the sensible, intuitive and efficient interface which was present [even as just an option] in all prior releases of safari, so now we have to spend our time getting used to mousing around like a retarded person to reach basic functionality, for no good reason. yeah, safari 4 is fast and has a load of new features. but the gui design is absolutely disgusting and makes no sense whatsoever. let us have options and let us continue to use sensible and efficient design paradigms. stop removing standard furcking features every time you introduce a new one. cripes. QUICKBEN I wouldn't mind trying v. 4 against Firefox, but Apple doesn't seem to be in any hurry to patch 10.5.7 so that folks using LCD TVs with non-standard syncs can play, too. (see apple forums). Hopefully a solution will be coming soon so I can upgrade from 10.5.6. (Version 4.0)

HOOT4WVU When I saw this was a finalized version I downloaded via Software Update (& when that was DOA via MacUpdate for Tiger). My experience on my MacPowerPC G5 with System 10.4.11 was identical to the Beta version. Safari4 bounced in the dock and aborted instantly. On both my tries I ended up sending Apple a report. Finally I deleted everything I could find that was Safari, believing I could restore from an external hard drive. I lost virtually all my bookmarks, but by exporting from Camino was able to get most back for Safari 3.2.3 with a lot of maneuver. This is one of my worst Mac experiences in some time. At least the Beta had an uninstall and restore function. As far as I know I had no add ons in Safari. (Version 4.0)

FRANKO Installed v 4 on my PowerMac DP 2 running 10.5.7 Installation (done through Install pckage and not SW) was a breeze; the Welcome vid a nice touch typical of Apple. Thus far no crash/sudden quits and this puppy is QUICK! Pages load/render way faster than v 3.x, Only minor annoyance is Top Sites; perhaps it's my mac but it did take about 10 minutes to fill the grid. Me likey thus far..... (Version 4.0)

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS I can't complain too much, the speed of 4.0 blows away any other Mac browser by a long shot. My only complaint is the lack of a visual progress bar like the old way. LARRYMCJ From all the feedback I saw up on Apple forums during the beta, I'm sure there was an overwhelming majority that wanted the tabs back on the bottom. KNOWHOWE Yes, I too loved the tabs at the top and want them back please. And I HATE that static 'loading' thing on the right hand side of the address window. It provides no feedback about how the page is loading whatsoever. I want my blue progress bar back NOW! Some good people were pretty quick off the mark to write little apps to put right the things we didn't like about the beta- such as restoring the progress bar. Help, we need you again! BLUESTAR Love the new Safari. Fast as hell and slick. Like the new tab bar arrangement better than the "tabs on top" BS and I also like the "loading" dark blue mini indicator instead of the light blue progress going across the entire URL field. so 80's looking, so 20th Century... :-) (Version 4.0)

BOOOMWHADIS This crippled progress 'indicator' instead of a REAL progress bar is the reason i'm not updating to 4.0. MACINTOSH SAUCE Finally! Apple has finally put a new tab button in the Toolbar. It only took four versions of Safari to do it! :-) This final version of 4.0 seems quite snappy and I am glad they made the Tab Bar default to the bottom. In the terminal you should be able to change it back to the top like in the beta. Personally, I prefer it below the Toolbar. (Version 4.0)

STEVEN GOODHEART Make sure you don't have a Plug-in that's incompatible with the new release. The first time I fired it up, it crashed, but the crash dialog box that popped up after the crash (which sends a crash report to Apple) helpfully said that the crash was probably caused by the TastyApps plug-in that VideoBox installs was the culprit. As soon as I disabled that plug-in, the new version fired right up. The release Safari also told me, on startup, that KeyWurl (another SIMBL plug-in) hadn't been tested with this version of Safari, and so was disabling itself. I hope the developer puts out an update soon. But after these two glitches, caused by add-ons, the new Safari ran and runs just fine, and is really fast. Hope these comments help you or others.

WILLIAM25 Where is the videwobox plug-in. I can't find it. Safari crashes on me now too. Over and over. (Version 4.0)
| Jun 8 2009 |
STEVEN GOODHEART Please note that I'm not saying that Safari crashing on startup is necessarily or only due to the VideoBox plug-in! Just that that was the case on *my* machine, and the crash dialog box said so. Unless you are a user of VideoBox, you shouldn't have the offending plug-in. However, if you have tried VideoBox and can't find it, it's SIMBL plug-in that's located at: User:Library:Application Support:SIMBL:Plugins: (right now, I only have SafariStand in the very last folder in this hierarchy -- good ol' SafariStand works!) You might also try disabling or removing plug-ins from here: User:Library:Internet Plug-Ins Macintosh HD:Library:InputManagers

D9 The loss of SnapBack in the address bar for quick return to the exact location and web page you started a link run is a big bummer. I'd gobble Safari 4 up right now but for this deletion...it really changes my surfing methods and puts S4 on par again with FireFox. Why must Apple always tinker with the obvious successes? JAZZADDICT I'm enjoying the beta. Really like where Safari is going. I love how searching history has massively improved.I think the Top Sites feature is a bit shallow. I wish I could just easily choose which site I want in which space. If you want a site to appear in Top Sites you have to wait for it to show up after you visit it enough. And if you have all your site areas 'pinned down' it will never appear at all. I wish I could enter whatever URL I want to whatever Top Site I want. I think bookmarks should have more metadata to make it easier to organize and find. Labels, descriptions, and maybe even keywords (tags). Tabs on top is still weird now but i'll catch on. It is a better way of doing things for sure. (Version 4.0b1)

D9 The speed is definitely noticeable and in all aspects of page loads, not just JavaScript. The new UI tabs takes a bit of time to get used to but is a nice improvement once you do. The Top Sites feature is a great concept but needs better editing capabilities like normal bookmarks. Coverflow is every bit as helpful as it is in OS X; scrolling through large thumbnails of previous pages is worth the price alone...no more trying to figure out sites you visited based on vague page names or cryptic web addresses. I initially could not launch Safari 4 beta no matter what I tried. Turns out that any InputManagers for Safari found in the Library folder, specifically Glims for me, will cause issues with this beta. A personal disappointment for me is the loss of Snap Back (or at least, I'm not seeing it). This was a great feature difference for me versus other browsers; to be able to click once to go back not just to the first page of your link trail but to the very location on that first page is just incredible...Apple, please bring this back! Good to see Apple putting betas into the wild for users to better impact the development of a stable solution upon delivery. Overall, I think Safari 4 is a great step forward for this browser and at least much quicker than previous. (Version 4.0b1)

MARTERUSA When I first downloaded Safari 4.0 it would crash immediately. I discovered elsewhere that the problem was Glims. Removed it, installed Safari 4.0, and all is well. Works perfectly. I love the speed and elegance of the program. (Version 4.0b1)

HOOT4WVU I downloaded the Tiger Safari 4.0b1 and installed. When I tried to launch/open the app it quit instantly each time; I did "try again" several times and then did a report to Apple. Fortunately there is an uninstall provided and it restores to previous status. I am on a G5 single processor PowerPC (not Intel) using OS10.4.11 and 2 GB RAM. (Version 4.0b1)

SILVERDEMON Thank you thank you! If the UI in 10.6 will be anything like this safari, I'll be happy! I love the new Web Inspector. (Version 4.0b1)

2 - It's a BETA (not a final product. There's supposed to be bugs. Find them.. Send them in.) 3 - It's not up to Apple to make a BETA compatible with every 3rd party extension out there (It's THOSE companies responsibility to update their software to the latest version of the browser). "Glims" did this the very same day (probably got tired of all the incessant whining). Enough with the "way to go Apple" negative reviews. For a BETA there are actually fairly few bugs that I've found. Updated "Glims", and had to uninstall the Growl Mail extension for the time being, but that's it. Otherwise it's been performing great, and I like the new features. Thank you to the developers for doing a great job. (Version 4.0b1)

KKNOPP I wonder when the nightly Webkit builds will have these features? Anyhow, stable, no problems. I noticed most of the people that did have problems had them because of 3rd party plugins that aren't compatible. It's not Safari or Apple's fault guys. (Version 4.0b1)

NEONBLUE2 If you have Safari 4 installed then they already do. All the nightly builds are, are the framework plus some code that tells Safari to run on the newer framework with a different icon. The framework itself is only there for rendering and interpreting web data. It's up to the developer to create a browser around the framework. So you'll only see these features in other browsers if the developers do it themselves (or Apple creates an easier way to do it in the SDK). (Version 4.0b1)

EVILINSTONE I love new Safari!!! New tabs is very comfortable for using and have nice look. Mail.app, Adium, Skype and some other programs who using WebKit working without any problem. Glims require update for working in Safari 4. Safari AdBlock still working. Thanks! SafariStand working partially. Site Alteration working only for Java and JavaScript (it's doesn't work for plug-ins like Flash :( ). Load Plug-ins Manually options still working without any problem. Apple please return Reload/Stop button. Apple please release new tabs system as framework for using in others applications like iChat, Mail.app and in third side applications. Thanks a lot for good job! (Version 4.0b1)

LEV None of the problems others are reporting, but it does seem that SafariStand doesn't work with Safari 4. I use Stand's excellent web page clipping CM a lot; so I guess I'll just wait until the developers upgrade it. Only one conceptual problem: Top Sites gives away too much information. You'll never get away with the old "Oh, I tried to go to YouTube but the pesky thing sent me to YouPr0n instead" when it comes up as your Top Top Site... but then Apple doesn't believe in confidentiality any more (cf. the way iPhone shows everyone, at the very least, who has been texting you; and, usually, what they've said as well. I wonder if the iPhone division is waiting for the first lawsuit...) (Ooops. Off-topic. But there you go.) (Version 4.0b1)

RICH K. Ok so I realise its a Beta but it does screw up my Mail App by keeping it forever stuck on downloading from mailbox. Secondly since the demise of Acid Search the search function has become useless. Contrary to Apples belief there are other countries on this planet apart from the USA, when I Google I want find results locally in my Country and not somewhere on the other side of the planet. FInally tabs on top looks odd but I couldn't care less about this or any of the other useless eyecandy because I'll be using Firefox. Thanks but no thanks Apple. (Version 4.0b1)

MISCHIVO Causes Mail.app to crash whenever it checks for new mail. Uninstalled. Aside from that, tabs don't belong at the topmost part of the window. This is weird and not worth the extra few pixels it saves for viewing the web. Honestly, it's less than 20 pixels; who really cares about that? It looks awful and doesn't seem to follow any of Apple's own guidelines for user interfacing. (Version 4.0b1)

BUZZARD If you have Growl installed and running when using Safari 4.0b1, Mail will crash when attempting to receive incoming mail. If you go under Mail preferences and disable GrowlMail, the problem will go away and you can use Safari 4.0b1. (Version 4.0b1)

BOBMAC Downloaded and used this version for 45 minutes. It only loaded two of ten pages, gave me mumbo-jumbo 'couldn't find the server' messages on the other (complete baloney, Firefox 'found' them all. Going back to 3.2.1 right now! (Version 4.0b1)

DANA SUTTON I can't comment on the speed of this new version: so many factors go into determining how fast a page loads (server speed, carrier bandwidth, etc.) that I have no idea how to isolate the single factor of browser speed. The thing that does impress me as most strikingly different is Top View, which is very easy on the eyeballs and has a lot of potential. But I have a problem with the fact that I can't have full control of precisely what sites it contains. In the first place, I haven't discovered any way of ensuring that pages I do want actually appear in it. In the second, it insists on loading a bunch of pages I haven't ever visited in my life and have no desire to visit, for me they're just clutter. Apple ought to let me have full control of the contents of this page, in accordance with my personal viewing habits, rather than having some guy in Cupertino second-guessing for me. (Or am I missing something about its controls? If I can manage this page, the method certainly isn't very intuitive!) (Version 4.0b1)
