DKLAWLESS AJ Users (all thousands of you), Having used this application for years I can recall numerous times that this untility has save me countless hours of work. I just visited the developers site to find out he is in the same pinch as he was with the move to OS10.5. He is strapped for money to develop the update to Snow Leopard . Listed as FREEWARE he will accept donations. Please consider a donation to help him. It won't take much to fund a solution. EX: an external hard drive and Snow Leopard. The link is: .

AMURO OS X 10.5.8 Build 9L30 and latest security update as of Aug 13 Applejack shows some errors in my iMac when trying to repair permissions. The logs don't have record of on-screen errors. CTKMND It does run for me under 10.5.6 except it seems like it is responsible for banging up some of my preferences when run on auto or check prefs. How does AJ validate the prefs? Is AJ or some Apple utility it calls that screws up? If you installed it previous to the 10.5.6 upgrade have you tried a re-download and re-install? It's a very good safeguard repair, especially for portables so it would sure be nice to see it updated!

KRYSIA This is a small, fabulous, and indispensable piece of software. It repaired what Onyx could not. It repaired what Apple's Disk Utility could not. It repaired what Apple's Disk Utility could not from a different startup (original) disk could not. My disk is in the Green again, and it was so incredibly easy to do. Followed their instructions. After initial restart, Safari had odd behaviors: I'd click the X to close a tab & nothing would happen. I'd go to push the scrollbar up or down after just doing so, & it wouldn't work unless I clicked on its background first. However, their instructions in the read-me file stated there might be some weirdness, and that a restart of the computer should fix it. I restarted, and *knock wood* so far, zero problems. Ran Onyx; needed to repair disk. Ran Disk Utility from a startup disk, and this time, the one thing left that was wrong with it after Applejacking it was fixable. Disk Repaired. To be safe, I restarted one more time, ran Onyx, disk is fine. Hooray! Definitely donated. (Version 1.5)

FLASH1296 Borlax: Most serious Mac users do NOT restart very often - unless they actually NEED to or they plan on being away for several days. This is a GREAT piece of work that has "saved my bacon" several times over the years. The single-user boot script (optionally) installed by the misleadingly-named "Leopard Cache Cleaner" [a 'must-have' utility] is similar to, and perhaps inferior to, Applejack - as it cannot repair permissions, and the tasks cannot be run selectively. The idea of my running any of my Macs without Applejack installed is a logically absurd notion. (Version 1.5)

HANDYMAC AppleJack's developer deserves a BIG round of applause from the Mac community for this great utility, which has saved many of our bacons over the last several years. Unfortunately, making AJ work with 10.5 ('Leopard') is going to require some serious work, due to significant internal changes in OS X; and at the moment the developer just doesn't have the time to put into it (go to the Forums on the AJ home page -- "More Information" link above -- to see the discussion). However, AJ *is* Open Source, so anyone can pick up the code and give it a try. I don't have the skills, but maybe someone will.... (Version 1.4.3)

JOHN SAWYER CJS Of the tasks that Applejack performs, I suspect updating it to get permissions repair to work as OS 10.5 expects, without causing some disaster, would be the hardest task (not sure how hard, not being much of a programmer). It took a couple of the Swiss army knife utility authors (OnyX? Leopard Cache Cleaner? or both?) a few tries to get that one right. I suspect there may also be some new cache file locations, and maybe some old ones no longer in effect, requiring some changes there too, but not as big a job as permissions repair. (Version 1.4.3)

ASMEURER Until this is updated, fsck- fy will perform a file system consistency check in single user mode (the first test performed in AppleJack). Does anyone know how to manually run the other commands, especially the permissions repair or cache clearing ones? (Version 1.4.3)
| [ 1 Reply - Reply ] | |
Replies:
| Apr 10 2008 |
JOHN SAWYER CJS I don't think clearing all the cache locations by entering commands in single user mode is going to be practical for too many people, since there are a few too many such locations, so for now, cache cleaning utilities like Leopard Cache Cleaner, Onyx, Cocktail, etc. are the tools of choice. But if a Mac won't start up properly or stay running long enough to allow a user to run one of these utils, it can still be done in single user mode, by just entering the same commands as one can enter in terminal--rm [pathname] (I won't list the entire set of commands here, for fear of either not getting them exactly right, or getting them right and still having someone wipe large parts of their drive's directory and blaming me). If the drive that need cache cleaning won't boot, then you'd have to boot from another drive, and use one of the cache cleaning utils to clear caches on the problem drive, but LCC is the only one I know of, that will let you clear the caches on any volume other than the startup volume. I suggested it to the author. To be able to repair permissions in single user mode, when OS 10.3 was released, required the author(s) of Applejack to do some research and experimenting (someone else figured it out for him), and they finally came up with a clever workaround, since Apple did something screwy with the "diskutil" routine starting with OS 10.3 that normally prevented permissions repair from being executed in single user mode. So, even if one issues the command, in single user mode, to run diskutil's permissions repair routine, which is mostly all Applejack had to do prior to OS 10.3, it still probably wouldn't work, because whatever limitation or oversight Apple introduced in 10.3, probably still exists. Apple has no interest in repairing permissions in single user mode, even though they've stated no reason to actively prevent it, so they haven't dedicated any useful amount of resources to fixing this bug. So, Applejack's workaround would still be necessary, and it's doubtful its commands could be entered in single user mode, at least in any semi-convenient fashion (take a look at the extra stuff that's displayed onscreen when Applejack prepares to do permissions repair--you can get some idea of some of the stuff going on behind the scenes, not shown as enterable commands). So, for the time being, utils that can repair permissions, like Disk Utility, Leopard Cache Cleaner, etc. are the only choice. I'm not sure what commands are used to accomplish the other things Applejack does. (Version 1.4.3)

MAZZBOY I'm so pleased to have found AppleJack. I've spent a fair amount of time trying out other similar things but none of them have quite done what I've wanted, unlike AppleJack, so thanks. It at first seems a little scary to the casual OS X user, in that it runs in single user mode, which I'd never seen before, but once you follow the simple instructions of restart and hold command S, it couldn't be simpler. Mac OS X's Disk Utility annoyingly would tell me that a volume needed to be repaired and then wouldn't let me, but AppleJack found a way around it. I was beginning to get worried about my laptop but now all the bugs and things here and there that just didn't seem right are all fixed. Again, thank you. (Version 1.4.3)

ME2 To previous comment: when starting up in single user mode the fans run at full speed as the controllers are bypassed. Applejack runs fine then when you restart/reboot, the controllers take care of the speed. Don't worry, this is normal. :) (Version 1.4.3)

ROADTRIPDK I haven't used this app yet as I am wondering what the bugs in the G5 thermal control are (OS X - not the app) that are mentioned in the read ReadMe file are all about: "Some users of G5 systems have reported that the fans ramp up very fast. This is not related to AppleJack, but is due to the fact that the thermal controllers are not loaded while in single user mode. If this condition persists after restarting into Mac OS X, you may have run into one of the many known fan-management bugs. See the apple.com support forums, or macosxhints.com for extensive postings on this topic." OK, there may be extensive postings on the issue, but why not try to be a little more specific? I have a G5 single with major problems with the HD. I don't want to have to fuddle around with more issues than I already have got. (Version 1.4.3)

KLKTRK Perhaps because the issue with the fans is a bit of a moving target, with some models responding better to certain methods than others. Rather than try to be pre-emptively exhaustive, perhaps the author is veering on the side of caution in providing a flexible answer that can adapt to the many issues reported out there instead of answering definitively and then being inundated with "hey, this didn't work! on my Mac ? with 10.4.x and nnn mg of RAM, build version xxxxx and EFI firmware version...." He is not obligated to offer support for an issue that is properly Apple's. (Version 1.4.3)

FRONTPAGE I dunno... am I the only one who has a completely negative experience with AJ? Using it in my Quicksilver 1st gen, it seemed to work. But then it kept rebooting on its own. I tried powering down, but to no avail. It simply wouldn't shut down. Finally, I unplugged it and now... it won't start. I tried holding down the restart button, after many attempts to boot it up. The button glows but fades to nothing. No fan noise, no *bong*... no nothing. It was my first attempt at using AppleJack; now I'm scared to ever use it in any of my other Macs. Sorry. SJJ_PUBLIC I had a kernel panic at startup after installing 10.4.5 that was not even resolved with a Safe boot. During safe boot my powerbook just shut itself off! So I restarted into single user mode and ran "applejack auto restart". After going through it's routine and automatically restarting, my Powerbook started up just fine and is working great since. This kernel panic experience after installing 10.4.5 probably won't be repeated by many others, but it does sometimes happen, and its resolution speaks volumes for AppleJack. Every Mac should have AppleJack installed on it. I can't recommend it highly enough. (Version 1.4.2)

LORD LIGHTNING I could not get Safari to run under TIGER. Ran AppleJack in single user startup mode [command + s] on restart. I then used the 'a' command (automatic). It completed all the tasks in about four or five minutes. At the end of the task run I chose 'r' for restart. How Easy! Perfect restart and now Safari runs. It removed five corrupt files I had inadvertently carried over from my upgrade from Panther to Tiger. I understand Tiger uses a different core structure to Panther. Applejack fixed it all in no time. B YOUNG Ditto - with the feedback comment. That is, I have been using AppleJack for several versions now and have found it to be reliable, useful and have been impressed with the author's response to improvements. The bug correction noted came out within 10 days of the previous version, so it was relatively quick (try to get that kind of response from microsoft). As well, he was willing to note it publicly and prominently so he gets points for ethics and honesty in my book. Short of rebooting your system from an OS X startup CD, or from a separate partition/volume this is the only free tool (and only one of very few at any price) that can repair your hard drive right from your boot volume. ANONYMOUS Be careful to backup applications starting with an "A" in their names -- "applejack" doesn't seem to like those. After letting it do it's work with no visible probs and restarting, my Acrobat folder was wiped empty with exception of some copy-protected Distiller settings. Also gone: Adressbook, Apple Script folder, and another application folder starting with "A". Really, since I kept my backups current, I had a good laugh... TNH Why were you using this application in the first place? It isn't something you need for daily maintenance. If you submit that your files were deleted then why not run the same routines with your backup and see what happens. Make sure you don't move Apple Vended files and think that they will work, that's not going to happen consistantly. It sounds like hysteria or your system was really messed up and your deleted files were probably corrupt before using this application. Consider checking your drive w/ techtool or dw, although if Applejack repaired your disk you might not find a problem now. If you are losing files when you use routine applications then you should get a new drive. (Version 1.3.1.1)

RONALD PRICE AppleJack works very well and does all it claims. It isn't DiskWarrrior or TechTool but it doesn't claim to be. Applejack just makes it quick and easy to access the built in maintenance tools include with OS X. Booting into Applejack found a large list of things needing fixing. Applejack also fixes various plist issues, deletes cache better than Cocktail and other nice things. As far as command line, I mean jesus get over it people. Reboot holding command+s. They you type "applejack" then "a" then when it's finished "reboot." You'd have to be a supreme 'tard not to be able to handle that. Also, I had absolutely no problems installing Applejack with the installed on two machines from the .DMG file. Highly recommended, and best of all free. (Version 1.3)

ANONYMOUS You can also run through all the AppleJack tasks and then restart the machine simply by typing 'applejack auto restart' when you've booted into single user mode. It will do the maintenance tasks and restart the machine. Simple (Version 1.3)

ANONYMOUS Uhm, diskutil works in panther via the terminal & the disk utility app, I use "/usr/sbin/diskutil repairPermissions /" it in a weekly script without any issues. So the question is what in the heck is the "fixes diskutil so it works in pather" thing about? (Version 1.3)

ANONYMOUS diskutil does not work in Panther when you are in Single User Mode. Once you've started up the whole system, then it works fine. So yes, diskutil works in the Terminal, but it does not work in Single User Mode right out of the box--something which it used to do in Jaguar. (Version 1.3)

RONALD PRICE Ditto previous reply. This utility is useful when an app or system crash causes permissions and/cache corruption so bad the system hangs during boot-up. You may still be able to boot into single user mode and fix things. This is quicker than booting from the OS X Installer disc. And if you don't happen to have your Installer disc handy. . . As a bonus, AppleJack gives us Mac users a little geek fix. :) (Version 1.3)

RONALD PRICE AppleJack isn't DiskWarrior, TechTool Pro, or Norton Utilities but it can fix the 2 most common problems that afflict OS X - corrupted caches and permissions. If you are comfortable booting into single user mode and using a command line tool then AppleJack is a very handy thing to have installed. Even if your system hangs during boot-up you may be able to fix things with AppleJack. (Version 1.3)

LEO OF BORG This is a great script. No CD, no NetBoot. Just single user mode, and 'applejack auto reboot' and my Mac is checked while I get coffee. That being said, I don't use the Applejack installer because it's buggy, so, in the terminal by hand I do this: 1/ sudo root (root user is necessary! If not, try 'sudo') 2/ cp [applejack install path]/applejack.sh /sbin/ [If you put in /sbin you don't need to change root profile] 3/ cd /sbin; ln -s applejack.sh applejack [file linking is convenient] 4/ cp [applejack install path]/applejack.8 /usr/share/man/man8/ [the man page] So little work for such a great script... have fun!
