SLOB  Still my favourite (tho recent data guardian looks nice, but doesn't have the same flexible notes frame, which now won't open on the icon click btw), except..

still brushed metal!?.. And could be nice to doubleclick on a record (or that same icon) and have it open in its own window - easier for editing imo.

SILVASURFER  As a registered user of Steel I am very pleased with the overall package. It does what it is supposed to do and well. Only comment I would make is that it has not been updated now for over a year and we have had no word from the developer. Shame, because with a few more added features it would be at the top of the class.

GUNTIS  When the Category is empty with no entries, double-clicking doesn't create new entry... If there is already one entry, then I can create another one with the double-click. Can this be corrected?

GUNTIS  Now when all iApps have Unified theme interface, maybe Steel could follow in their path?... Brushed metal now isn't as good as new smooth Unified theme.

MUDFLAPPER  I tested every single last password organizer for the Mac over the last few months, and Steel came out on top. I was leaning towards Wallet because of it's snazzy interface and icons, but there were just too many hiccups. I got all excited when Waterfall said they were going to ad dotMac/iDisk syncing so I could have one password database that I could get to from any Mac with a copy of Wallet. Turns out, they only added an import/export feature to your iDisk--a complete waste of time. I want it to just WORK. Like a Mac.

Steel, on the other hand, has been rock-solid since day one. It doesn't directly support dotMac syncing, but I've found a nifty workaround. Just save your database to a folder on your iDisk, and set the prefs to open that database automatically when launching Steel. Then, do the same with your copy at work or on your MacBook, make sure you sync your iDisk after saving your Steel database and BAM!--you're all set.

Anyway, if you're looking for the best password organizer for OSX, this is probably it.

DCT  Excellent. Easy to use. Easy to search. The developer is very responsive to questions and appreciates constructive comments and new feature ideas. Very stable... no crashing. Safe and secure.

FLARCH  Out those i've tried, Steel is the best software of this type.

However, i find it's whole GUI a bit off. Not entirely happy with the restriction on fields either, or the use of the drawer.

Good, but not great.

RICHO  2 weeks in, registered, and this is the best password storage app I've personally found, esp for the price - imports pretty well too. (finally moved away from Realbasic Besafe ;).

GABRIELE DE SIMONE  The problem was actually a bug in CocoaGestures. CocoaGestures will cause any application that does not subclass NSApplication to malfunction. The developer has been notified, but in the meantime you can download 1.0.6 which works around the bug in CocoaGestures.

ANONYMOUS  huh? it's extremely rare to subclass NSApplication - how does CocoaGestures work at all then?

ANONYMOUS  Uhh.. you do realize that if you intend to handle application events (maybe when it quits, gains focus) or if you want to say, bring the app to the front then you have to implement the methods in a custom subclass. In fact I'm suprised Steel DOESN'T use one.

GABRIELE DE SIMONE  Regarding the previous post about the user not being able to quit the program or bring up the preferences: Steel requires Mac OS X 10.3 to run. It is often the case that people overlook this requirement.

If you *are* running Mac OS X 10.3 and still experiencing these problems (something that no one has so far reported), then I would be happy to cooperate. It is in my best interest that users are happy with the software, after all.

ANONYMOUS  Well Simone, I sent the following report on 10/09/09 and have had no reply from you:

"Unfortunately, Command-S causes the app to quit unexpectedly, with loss of all entries including the password.

Running 10.3.5 with all system updates except the three most recent security updates..."

And, I included the crash log.

Thanks,

R -

MACSTERDAM  Although version 1 this is already a great program. Bought it shortly after having played with the trial. Have had no stability problems at all. Interface feels really good. Plenty of room for improvement, idea-wise that is, but as of now, my new program for passwords. Thanks!

GABRIELE DE SIMONE  I am very interested in knowing more about your bug (or any other bug for that matter). Most people who had any problems with Steel were simply overlooking the fact that it requires Mac OS X 10.3.

GABRIELE DE SIMONE  Regarding the lack of ways to reach me, here's my e-mail address: gabrieledesimone@mac.com

It's available from the About box and the Help, but I do agree that it should have been placed somewhere on my homepage too (and it will soon :-) ).

ANONYMOUS  Nice app Gabe.

Would be good to be able to add more fields, set font style, but an excellent start.

How about an email address to contact the developer, or is lack of such intentional??!!
