MARY.OJ I updated to new GmailStatus version, but didn't work for me.... no numbers for "unread messages", could not set color preferences.. nothing. The application was there, but invisible.. I'm testing now Google Notifier. It stands beautifully in my tool bar and I can read from there the senders of my unread mail! Wow! (Version 1.0.8)

MAYONAIZE Been a happy user of GmailStatus for a long time now, I like the benefit of not having to have Mail.app open all the time personally (plus I keep the Dock hidden by default, so a glance upwards to check if there's anything in my inbox has always been a easier way to do things). Since updating to this latest version (1.0.7) it has ceased functioning, showing '0' all the time, even though opening Mail shows several unread messages. I hope this problem can be corrected soon otherwise the program is (for me) currently useless unfortunately. (Version 1.0.7)

AVETENEBRAE Unless you have a .mac account, when you use Mail.app, the sent mails are stored on your computer. Using gmail with online compose windows store the sent mails on your online account, so they'll be available everywhere you check them. For me it's more than useful. (Version 1.0.7)

TNH I feel this is a step backwards from gmail notifier. With gmail notifier one could run two versions simultaneously for two different accounts (no need to fast user switch etc). With GmailStatus running two copies w/ different names takes me to the same inbox for the first account. Graphics for this are much better though. (Version 1.0.6)

ANONYMOUS I was mad when I found this morning that GmailStatus no longer works. I found that Google released Mac version of Gmail Notifier and got it. Then newer version of GmailStatus was posted later today. It checks mail, notifies, has expanded menu, but it doesn't take me directly to Inbox or Labels or Compose page - instead it takes you only to Gmail login page, regardless what you select from menu. Seems developer missed something... (Version 1.0.6)

MIKURO I used GmailStatus with no problems for many months, but since upgrading to Tiger (most noticeably since applying the 10.4.2 update), it's been too flaky to use. It unexpectedly quits often, and sometimes it start using all my CPU time for no discernible reason and needs to be force-quit from Activity Monitor. I've since started using Gee (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/17195) instead. No problems with it so far. This program served me well in Panther, but it seems like it's in desperate need of an update for Tiger compatibility. (Version 1.0.4)

SHAWN C. MACMAN Gcount works more smoothly and reliably than this app does in its current state, from my perspective. Neither author states, however, (and this is one of the features I like about web-based GMail -- a continuous state of ssl encryption) whether these utilities actually check the mail in an encrypted state, or are they simply sending your login/password out over the net in plaintext? Until I receive more word with regard to that issue, Apple Mail via POP/SSL will do just fine for me. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS All props to the developer. Nice bit of work, free. Works without any issues that I have detected after using it a few hours. One thing, I just can't use it as long as it has the square icon background in the menubar. I'd use this constantly if it were just a number 'floating' in the menubar, without the square background. For this reason I give it only four stars in the 'Features' category. (Version 1.0)

FEH! From Slashdot.org, today: "Recently, Google's gmail service has attempted to change login protocols to block third-party gmail notifiers that alert you to new email. Google has now taken it one step further and created a word-identification script filter as part of the login process. Personally, I find Google's gmail notifier annoying since it sits in my taskbar and doesn't have popup notification, unlike many other worthy Firefox or Mozilla plugins that feature gmail notification. Shouldn't I be free to use whatever third party software to check my email? Will we be seeing controls on browsers that can view gmail next?" (Version 0.9)

DAVID excellent little app, smart and small number in the top corner of the desktop... Gmail is a very good webmail. you don't need to trash mail , you just search for the info. it supports very big attachments , and almost no spam (now) you just have to find someone that can invite you for a GMAIL... ANONYMOUS Who needs GMail anyway? Why can't people just use their own basic email account instead of going to get all those free TOYING email accounts like GMail, Yahoo, Hotmail etc, etc... Those are for kids. That's the way I see it. I refuse to put anyone's address in my address book if they give me those free email addresses. To me, that's no respect and tell people they have so much to hide and they can't even give people the proper real email address. Shame!!! Feel sorry for them. (Version 0.9)

ANONYMOUS Webmail accounts can be useful, I've had a Yahoo mail account since who knows when. For example, I use it whenever some dumbass website insists on having my email address before I can proceed to whatever it is that I want to access on that website. Or when some jerk that I meet (in person) wants my email address, I give him my Yahoo address. In other words, I use Yahoo mail as "dead-end address". Lots of people do this, common practice. NATHAN SPINDEL (I'm the developer of gCount). If gCount can login, then it means that gmail.google.com is not being redirected at a low level like /etc/hosts. I suggest you try opening Keychain Access (in /Applications/Utilities) and delete all google.com entries. After this, you'll have to set your login/password in gCount again. You can also try deleting your Safari preferences. Does it work with another browser? (Version 0.7)
