JOE2100  I hunted for a good irc mac client for a while before settling on this little gem. Do yourself a favor and check this out. The default color scheme is easy on the eyes, the layout is pretty intuitive. It has lots of features and best of all its FREE. My only complaint is the icon. Developer, plz hire someone to fix this and you will have the perfect package.

SHAWNYQ  From a GUI standpoint, Colloquy is the cat's meow, but not everyone needs the GUI. Sometimes, I prefer just a simple fast terminal-like client.

GAOSHAN  Colloquy looks very nice but it lacks some basic features.

As one example, you should be able to type in: /help somecommand and get help with whichever command you like but in Colloquy, nothing happens. /help doesn't work!

ANONYMOUS  jerkb35.dmg is the file i downloaded when clicked the link here...

can you simply update your release name too ?!

also, looks like this release is for a school task... mainly just a unix like interface, IRC is far beyond that for years...

ANONYMOUS  Actually, I believe the author wanted an IRC client which looks like a command line, but with GUI advantages. Many of us still like command lines, y'know. :)

DEKKARD  I use jIRCii on both my mac (panther 10.3.9) and on my linux box(ubuntu hoary) and it does a great job, i love the ease with wich you can customize the colors and the abundance of simple aliase commands ala BX.. There have been some great addon scripts written by the small but growing "sleep" scripting community as well. Frankly it leaves the mac irssi clones in the dust in terms of responsiveness. It just keeps on getting better and better.. and if there is a feature you want, let the dev(butane) know and he will consider it, or tell you how to script that functionality for yourself.

ANONYMOUS  Fantastic program. I hunted for an OS X IRC client for a few weeks, trying out multiple completely different clients, to settle on jIRCii. X-chat Aqua has a laggy interface, other clients are missing features like auto-reconnect or other basic features. jIRCii is missing some GUI customizeability of other programs but it makes up for it in robustness and stability. It handles multiple servers, rooms, chats, files, and more, in an interface that's easy to pick up (although it doesn't hold your hand like some other mac IRC clients, which can be good or bad depending on your experience level). I had it set up and working EXACTLY like I wanted an IRC client to work in about 5 minutes. Perfect! And it's been great ever since. I'll be using this program for all of IRC needs for a very long time, and look forward to future features.

SHAWN C. BLOWER  Why not save time and update when new features are added? I'm all for being up-to-date, but that's what nightly/weekly builds are for. Put security fixes on your website, not MacUpdate. (If I sound rude, I'm sorry.)

ANONYMOUS  Interesting, but if you want a 'UNIX console client experience with the advantages of a solid GUI' try MacIrssi. Much better than this IMO

ANONYMOUS  While it is probably bad form to spam one client in the review forums for another one I decided to try out MacIrssi again. It has progressed a lot since I last tried it. I'll say this, the decent parts of this client come mostly from the irssi underpinnings themselves. irssi really is a wonderful client and you'll find I'd be one of the last people to diss it.

This client though has a long way to go yet. The author even acknowledges this in the readme. The preferences dialog is very sparse. I couldn't figure out how to connect to a new server (multi-server). There is no help dialog. There is no statusbar which I miss personally.

The configuration dialog is one of the biggest things. As a IRC user I don't want a UI getting in my way (thus I like a light client like MacIrssi or jIRCii), but I really wouldn't want to dig deep into a programs internals to figure out how to change common settings.

If someone likes irssi and they aren't worried about the spartan UI then I could recommend this client. However this is probably a good project to keep an eye on in the future. Especially for irssi lovers.

In the meantime jIRCii has a passable UI that has a lot of the ease of use stuff that is a requirement of novice users and a major convienence to power users.

Anyways thanks for the comment... I guess.

I_LOVE_CHOOKS  love it! this is the only decent freeware IRC software i can find. everythign else either doesnt have DCC or it is a bastard to use. I am basically only using this for DCC, so all i can recommend is that it pops up in a transfers window or something rather than just at the bottom of the screen. Otherwise, great app!

RAFFI  Hi there, just so you know you can click View->DCC Sessions or /dcc stats to get a window with real time dcc stats information.

Glad to hear you like the client :)

ALEX  Oh, and no other mac apps have the underlined first character shortcuts... Every mac comes with a mouse, and we use them. They don't look good.

TUPRING  Just a little OT but, Remember Speed Doubler 8? It could add the Underline Short-Cut to the Finder and Everything else!

SHEILA KING  I personally would _love_ to have the underlined shortcuts.

It is one of the things I miss most about switching from Windows to Mac. Would like to be able to work more easily from the keyboard without having to reach for the mouse.

ALEX  This is a good client, but there are a few thigs missing. It would be nice to have [command] + [] commands, and being able to copy and past text in the chat window is ESSENTIAL! Until that is fixed I am going back to XChat Aqua

ANONYMOUS  Hi there, this is the developer. Are you having trouble copying and pasting as in using Apple+C and Apple+V to copy and paste or are you talking about the lack of a menubar menu to cut and paste with?

RAZZ  It's a good start. For my money, I will keep using Ircle since it is very stable and has lots more capability including the ability to be on multiple IRC networks simultaneously. jIRCii tries to use a single window with tabs to do everything. This is poor design. Too constraining. Ircle has been criticized for having too many windows....I guess you can't please everyone.

RAFFI (NOT THE SOFTWARE PUBLISHER)  Ok Raffi you have answered along prayer of mine. This is the Mac version of the PC mIRC. I LOVE IT. This software should go on being updated till it is upto par with the MIRC pc version, this is what makes IRC fun...all the scripting, this was lacking on the Mac platform. Well not really as lacking but there were no other IRC clients with the user friendliness of this client. Congradulations for this amazing piece of software. Please keep developing this. ITS SUPER!!!!!!!!!!!!

ANONYMOUS  Its a great app if your not going to take advantage of DCC features, for some reason i can't establish a DCC connection with this app, i just get no response from the bot at all. I tried to connect to my buddies bot to get a few vids and he said he received nothing from my computer. And X-Chat Aqua works fine... Other than that its a nice program, decent interface and its a little more responsive than X-Chat aqua.

ANONYMOUS  Hi there, the dcc options in jIRCii work (I know, I wrote it). However if you are behind any kind of a NAT or a firewall you may need to change one setting.

Try going to View -> Options -> DCC Options -> and change the "Local Address" field to server method.

Hopefully that will help you out. -- Raffi
