SHANE C SMITH This is the only piece of software I use when editing my media files. With that being said I am very disappointed with the development of this software. There are a number of bugs that have been present since Version 3, one of which is making changes to files that are not recognized in iTunes. It's pretty hard to pinpoint the problem since it happens some of the time and only on certain fields. My latest experience was adding cover art, it's in the file but the system and itunes doesn't see it. Please fix this software or better yet make a new version 4. (Version 3.4.6)

JOBBY "Account error: inactive" So much for the download link is there a mirror anywhere? The links on the developer's site go to the same place
(As an aside, you'd think Apple would make a better looking failure page for mac.com than a couple of lines of monospaced text!) (Version 3.4.5)

SUNCHASER21 Media rage use to be good or so I thought. until i this aug, i started to try to put id3 tages to my music, I was batch processing about 2000 songs.. media rage would crash EVERY SINGLE TIME.. restarted the computer, i even thought well maybe it is something in my computer , something i installed that is having an issue with media rage.. Reinstall leopard 10.5.7 Still crashed.. new system nothing installed other then, leopard and media rage.. Still crashing all the time.. did about 200 files.. crashed. did about 50 , didn't crash, started "Pinning" multi, files as in artist name, album title, id3 tages, and album artwork so that it would be the same for all that album. well everything was going fine, even thought it would not work with many The out come was that many id3 tages were broken, some COULD NOT BE WRITTEN TO.. which is the biggest problem, it would do like 80% of the tages correctly and then the rest it would not write anything to .. I tried those songs that media rage could not write to, in itunes.. I tunes wrote the tages correctly .. Here is the really bad apart.. I have tried to contact there support dept, 5 TIMES.. in 1 month asking why it is happening and how to fix this.. NO ANSWER.. not one time did they send me back a reply.. there support is nothing and i bought this.. what a waste of money.. REALLY If you are looking to buy this app, PLEASE don't get mislead like i did.. Really . NO SUPPORT.. crashes with big number of files, which you know is not so big of a deal but that it does not WRITE to every file is not so funny, to have to go look at every file for fear it did not write ever tag..i even tried writing to the file one by one.. opening a new window in media rage.. for each file that can not be written to ,nothing worked.. So I tried 2 other apps.. The first is like the bad media rage but much much more powerful, ( it did crash also but not as much) it is called. "jaikoz" the other which was simpler but worked great and cheaper and DID EVERY FILE.. 300, 3000 NO PROBLEM. no crashes.. was called. "ID3 Editor" the only problem i had was figuring out how to keep the lyrics in the songs,, for example if there were already written in my original music file. seems that ID3 Editor would not keep them or import them in..maybe was me.. but in the end.. i never did figure it out.. but it atleast wrote all the tags and never crashes.. MEDIA RAGES.. well i am sad i gave you my money, but be sure i will never use your product again.. compared to these to other apps..why would I. ?? check them both out before buying media rage..becauase i am sure i am not the only one having this problem with crashes or bad support. Hope this helps someone.. (Version 3.4.5)

DOUG ENGELBART The QuickEdit function for ID3 tags of MP3s is the only reason why I use Media Rage. And this works perfectly. DragNdrop, edit it, press Apple-S. Done. √ Pity that it's not freeware. ;) (Version 3.4.5)

AKANICO Tried that new version and have to admit it is still the most complete mp3 tag editor software out there. It sure ain't pretty and even have an 'old school' look but it's not that important anyway. What seems to be a bug to me though, with the media scrubber window after editing tracks (nice to change several fields at once now), it does not refresh infos. The only way to see it is by removing tracks and putting them back. And that's annoying.. (Version 3.4.3)

SIDDHARTHA This is a great product. What little problem I had was quickly solved by the developer (including when I wasted his time by my mistake with version numbers/passwords). Highly recommended-if you have any MP3 files on your system, you can use this! (Version 3.3.1)

VERYCARLA I haven't upgraded yet, but I'm planning on it soon. I do have a question for the devs: Do you ever plan to incorporate support for Apple's ID3v2.4 tags? It would be so, so sweet if I could do the sort of batch tagging I need to do to fill in the Sort by... tags without having to resort to a kludgy (and slow) applescript as I do now. If this support is already present, can you tell me how to access it? Many thanks! (Version 3.2)

JASON GILES yes it alreaady supports v2.4. you just need to set it as the tag version to write out in the tool you are using. note that only the latest itunes supports synch-safe tags. you can set this option to use synch-safe tags in the preferences of Media Rage. (Version 3.3)
| Feb 2 2008 |
I'm not sure what you mean by "sync safe" tags. I enabled the option in Media Rage 3.3.1 but I don't see any extended options. Thanks for your help! (Version 3.3.1)
| Feb 2 2008 |
JASON GILES some tools (e.g. the Convert Filenames to Data) don't allow you to specify a tag version; in these cases it will just use whatever tag version is in the file. other tools (e.g. Data Changer), allow you to explicitly set the tag version. in those cases, just choose version 2.4. if you want all your tags to be 2.4, you can use the Data Changer to change all your tags to a specific version provided no other data options are set. LEO SPILL Not worthy of a whole point increase - From 2.6 to 3.0 ? Seems a dubious way to fleece existing users out of some more dosh. It's big n' clunky, no operation is simple or straight forward and you still can't make 'drop-lets' or automator actions. This apps CM is very basic just compare with Mr.Doerner's MP3-Info CMM: http://www.cdfinder.de/mp3info/ Very un-Mac like, over weighed with too many useless functions and ugly design - Please, Mac developers make a sweet and elegant media tag editor ! JASON GILES 'Fleece existing users'? That's a bit harsh. We have given out 1.5 years of free updates of 2.0 - is not enough? We have to make a living too, and it takes time effort and money to develop products. Asking for a mere $9.95 doesn't seem like a lot, when users will receive many free updates of our products. And the 2.6 to 3.0 move was due to adding signficant new features that required investing time to develop, including Tool Chains and new tools. it is disappointing to have our hard work unappreciated. (Version 3.0)

PHATCACTUS Tool Chain alone is worth the $10, to make no mention of the other great new features and top-freakin'-notch tech support. The devs don't get nearl enough credit for this app. (Version 3.0.1)

WONDERING I've been a registered user of Media Rage 2.x for a while. I have been satisfied with its abilities and find it a worthy product. One of the things that I especially like about it is the finer control of tag information and updating that it allows, in contrast to the more limited options within iTunes. It also allows tag editing of music tracks whether they are in iTunes or not. The developer seems to be a generally a responsive guy, and has implemented several of my suggestions on improvements. TREBEJO The claim for FLAC support is not clear to me. I drop flac files into the various media rage toolboxes and it doesn't do anything with them. The "preferences" option does not mention flac, and I have to blindly select mp3, or ogg, or who knows what. The toolboxes have checkboxes for id3v tags but nothing for flac. At the moment this is only good for formats that can also be handled within iTunes. (Version 2.2)

ARIEL Oh dear, Media Rage does indeed support flac, and does so without requiring any intervention from the user to recognize it. I got confused because the "Preferences" option does not explicitly mention .flac, but it mentions lots of other popular formats (e.g. mp3, m4a). So I thought I was supposed to put it somewhere among the listed categories and that screwed things up. I've asked the powers that be at macupdate to remove my erroneous critique. (Version 2.2)

WOULD SWITCH IF... Why not MusicBrainz instead of FreeDB? I've searched around the FreeDB site. It's chaos! Umpteen duplicates; incomplete information, poor organization. MusicBrainz has only one out-dated Mac Tagger with less functionality than the PC version but it gets good results because of the audio fingerprinting. (Version 2.1)

PBG5USER I mean, if you think about it, there is a WHOLE more I'd like to see in this program. Sure, there are a lot of features (one should stress quality not quantity (that sounds cliche, but it's very true (for all walks of life, mind you) in most cases), but there could be so much more. There are lots of bells and whistles and things make this app stand out from the others, but a lot of the capability is generic (not that that's bad (don't get me wrong) for a program or anything), but I'd like to see more innovation. Maybe the developer should really prioritize the request his users send to get a better feel for that the users (all of us) think, and then try (as best he can (and as his schedule permits) as he has time) and rank the most requested features an implement them in a consistent manner. ANONYMOUS I have used Mp3Rage forever and have loved it. I gotta totally agree with the comments below though. The product is not aging well. All these functions need to be combined so that they are easier to use. GERWIN Still flimsily put together. For anyone with access to a pc with windows: compare this app with "The Godfather". There you can replace the contents of a field wit h the contents of any other field, not just swap 2 fields. You can rename a file with any tagfield as a criterium, not just some fields. You can Tag a field acoording to any part of it's name, not just folder/folder/filename. Mediarage is like: let's add this, and then this, and then this, . Every little function has its own windows. There is no "whole" program. And there's no flexibility in it, no choice for the user. You can reorganize and re-tag according to their ideas, not yours. It just shows their set it up wrongly. I wish they had a good look at "The Godfather" (the program, not the movie), and see that they have a long way to go before it's worth $20 . (Version 1.5)

TON011 Jeez, think before you write, Anonymous. Gerwin doesn't like Windows software so much. He wouldn't be writing Mac software reviews if he did. He just puts our attention to all the areas where Media Rage falls short. I agree with anything gerwin addresses. Media Rage is the only serious Mac tool we have for this sort of thing and it's pretty cumbersome to use. We Mac'sters don't need The Godfather 2, but we need a tool that is as flexible as The Godfather is, as gerwin has observed. I hope that Chaotic Software redesigns Media Rage so that it truly will be the ultimate tagging tool we need. (Version 1.5)

KRC I really like this tool a lot! I mainly use it for its mass tagging abilities as well as converting filename information into tag information. However, I have noticed one bug with this: if I tag an AAC file and upload this to my iPod, it won't play. Not sure why it won't play but my iPod won't play these files. I managed to reproduce this and this is how I did it: First, I rip the CD as AIFF using the Finder. Next, I use Ovolab's AAChoo to convert it to an AAC file instead of using iTunes' presets. The file can play in QuickTime and iTunes un-tagged. Lastly, I used Media Rage to tag it with the appropriate information and album art. When I dump this file into my iTunes Library, iTunes or iPod won't play it (when I play it in QuickTime, there is no audio). I can edit the tags via iTunes but that's it. I think Media Rage killed the AAC file in some way or another. Aside from that, it works really well for MP3s! (Version 1.5)

As a person who think that id3 v2 tags are poor, dangerous and bulky (not to mention how a poor one can crash all your sound apps) it means I have no use for this except for the Vorbis comments, and even there it's not a candle to the WinVorbis (sorry to bring up windows but it's a valid comparison - and WinVorbis is free) (Version 1.1)

ZEITKIND Well.. as a longtime user of MP3 Rage, I'm a bit dissapointed about this "new" version. It doesn't do much better than MP3 Rage concerning UTf-8 and Unicode tags. There is still no way to simply convert "wrong" PC-ID-tags to eg. GB5 or TC - even freeware program can do this (id3tag). It crashed sometimes, but I'm not that sure why, so I give it 3 stars. The handling is still a bit strange, I again miss a good documentation about the programs (eg. the regular expressions) and Media Rage misses features MP3 Rage had - though developers state to add more in the future versions. I don't need a player (why not using scripted iTunes??), I need a good editor for the id tags. Cataloging 150GB was inacceptible slow and crashed many times so I gave up. (Version 1.0.2)
