SMIBBITY  This is still a better player than QuickTime. Can resize far smaller than quicktime is capable of, control layout is better, and the square edges feel more complete. I use QuickTime to convert things, course, but ALL video types get changed to open with NicePlayer for me.

FORAGING FERRET  A very nice media player when paired with Perian – much more stable than VLC, I've found. However, I would love to see a "get info" window/inspector giving detailed technical information about the file (a/v tracks, bit rate, fps, codec, etc).

With that little feature and improved playlists I would get rid of VLC altogether.

This is a very nice player!

HIHAGEN  Very cool player for presenting multiple videos on multiple displays. Very smooth playback even with 4-5 videos. I am looking forward to follow the development on this. A full customizable keyboard short cut for multiple videos/playlist would have been nice. (eksemple; PLAY Video No. 1 with "1+P", STOP video No. 2 with "2+H" etc ... )

LEVIXX  Great Player, been using it for a while now.

But, when I have Niceplayer in full screen on my native monitor, while using another display for other endeavors, the controls do not pop up on the bottom on the screen. If I go to half screen on the native display, or even full on the secondary display, all is well.

The last version did not have this problem.

NYC][  This is my perfect player for casual movie watching, especially for watching in a small window while doing other work.

Top features:

- Scrollwheel/trackpad controlled window resizing. (wonderful when paired with a scrolling trackpad capable macbook)

- Scrollwheel/trackpad controlled volume.

- Apple remote support. (great for home viewing as well as presentation use)

- Customizable back/forward jump times. (Excellent for both skipping forward quickly to a specific spot, and backing up just a bit to catch something you might have missed)

- DVD player

Not as full featured as VLC, but what is does offer has been well-implemented. Comes with a changelog readme, links for recommended codecs.

Stable so far - MacBook 2.16/intel/10.4.9.

JBTULE  There maybe a work around for this, NicePlayer does support unicode and should render foreign characters, it's probably just that we don't have support to set specific language encodings in our first release of subtitle support, you could probably convert your subtitle file to UTF-8 and it would work. You should also send us a subtitle file to test with.

JBTULE  At first i didn't have success, and then I discovered that the API I used to load in the text requires a byte order mark, and that byteorder mark was not added by the text editor i used to convert it.

http://unicode.org/unicode/faq/utf_bom.html#25

Once i added EF BB BF to the beginning of the file with HexFiend everything rendered appropriately, obviously this is a very technical work around. So it would be better if we could find a text converter that would add the byte order mark after converting.

Workaround aside, we certainly we will make this work easier in future versions of niceplayer.

MIKURO  Not a bad player. I use it on the rare occasions I need to play QuickTime movies with a playlist.

Some of the features I just don't appreciate, though, like the lack of real title bars and controls. I understand that they want to keep the interface minimal, but I think the cost is too great. I like to be able to see the controls of the movie (including the progress slider, elapsed time, play/pause controls, etc.) while I watch the movie in windowed mode. As far as I can tell, there's no way to do this with NicePlayer, because it places these things ON TOP of the movie (only while the mouse is hovering over that area).

One feature that I like in NicePlayer is the ability to select output modes. QuickTime Player won't let you choose when it tries to use Core Video for output, and the result is terrible performance when using certain codecs on certain machines (3ivx in particular). Using QuickTime Player, the only way around this is to disable Quartz Extreme (using Quartz Debug) before opening your movie, and then turning it back on. That's a bit of a hassle.

So while NicePlayer is not without its advantages, I still use QuickTime Player most of the time, because of its interface and features. Of course, if you don't have QuickTime Pro, then QuickTime Player is virtually useless (no full screen mode? What the..?!), so give NicePlayer a few more points in that case.

If you need playlist support for QT-only content, NicePlayer is...well, nice! But most of the time, I'd rather use VLC or MPlayer when I need playlist support, and QuickTime Player when I need to play something only QuickTime can handle, so NicePlayer's niche is small.

WILL L  Zoom Does Not Work.

Up until a certain size, it zooms On Center, then it seems to stop at some kind of hard margin at the left.

-It then zooms with the left edge stationary and the image migrates left to right as you zoom.

-Not like zooming with a consumer electronics dvd player which zooms on center.

Also, It was impossible to RePosition the video. Upon Dragging, the 'Frame' of the window Crops out the view, but the playback itself is stationary & cannot freely be positioned around at fullscreen, zooming in to fill a widescreen dvd to a 4:3 computer monitor.

MATTKINABREW  I agree with the previous reviewer that this is the interface Apple should have included with Quicktime.

I've been using this for a long time, since (I believe) 0.6.

The interface is incredibly simple to use, with nothing to distract from the video. It is by far my most preferred video application, and I hope the author continues development.

The only request I would have would be to put "Show Playlist" under the "Window" menu instead of under "File", and maybe have an option to have the playlist drawer disappear when the program isn't the active application.

Great program.

TONY  From a design perspective this is very well crafted. The interface is exceptional and highly functional. (Even the logo is nice) This is the UI that Apple should have designed for Quicktime.

JAY TULEY  Nothing saves, or just the looping preference? The looping preference was accidently disconnected from the widget in the .nib file before being released. It actually can be reconnected with out recompiling. I'm going to thinking about quietly updating the dmg with the nib modified, since it's actually causing somone problems. The version before it didn't even have looping preferences so we were thinking we'd just have it fixed in the next version and not worry to much about it. Which BTW the next version has progressed quite a bit, though it has a way to go.

JAY TULEY  "The player can't handle scrubbing, and jams all the time"

I guess that depends on your hardware, it scrubs very very nicely on a 2ghz G5. The main difference between NicePlayer's scrubbing and QuickTime Player's scrubbing is NicePlayer doesn't pause the movie on scrub, which is very useful, but I guess only if your machine can handle it.

" I hate having to push its window to the background all the time: it forces its way to the front."

By design you shouldn't be able to push it to the background at all with the reasoning that either you are watching the movie or you aren't, so minimize pauses and the movie and when ever it's up it always floats over every other window.

"• Its internal volume control is set at 50%, rather than 100% as the Apple player is, making me work with two sets of volume controls: the Mac's and this one."

Actually you are wrong, it's set at 100% with a maximum of 200%, Quicktime player doesn't let you get to 200% without buying Pro.

I can understand the confusion though this is admittedly undocumented beta software. It's also not very customizable at the moment.

If I could change the volume graphically, as well as maintaining the "apple up" "apple down" functionality, and if the volume icon didn't stick in the middle of the window, this would be a 5-star application. It's great right now, and I like not having borders, but I would like to be able to change the volume and have Niceplayer remember the setting, at least as long as the movie is open.

Otherwise, this application is awesome. Thanks and please continue development.
