ANDYMOONAR  I previously liked this so much and also used it weekly. Never failed on me.

But the new high price tag isn't worth buying. There are other free and much cheaper options.

A pity really.

THEKIDFROMTHEREDBANK  I used to use this a lot. But it has become quite expensive and there are free alternatives that are as good. Also, possting updates without any release notes is quite uncourteous. Why not let your (paying) customers know, what all the great changes in the software have been about?

NATHANCOLLINGS  Previously always free but now a whopping $18

This app is good but paying for something that is also available for free is a no go-er for me.

My advice .. use any other free similar tool.

NORAA  Well you don't really need it - just use iPhoto (or an Windows equivalent) and import the photos that way. Senuti is designed to copy the music because it is otherwise quite difficult to do - copying photos is a piece of cake.

ASHMADUX  Senuti was a great app (lol dont update, and the freeware versions are sure to be torrented)- The problem with charging for this is that- hey, IT'S NOT EVEN A 1.0 PRODUCT!.

I wont dipute whether a dev has the right to charge, but 18 bucks for an app that has been around a long time, and is far from finished is a bit of a stretch. It can still be an invaluable tool, cant take that from it- but this situation surely hasnt been handled too well.

JON555  I can understand charging for software, but at least give them a fair warning when changing your business model. You want us to pay for this? It better be damn near perfect (it's not even about the charging of the money, it's about the principle).

K8J  I used to be a faithful user and I would've been willing to pay a small fee for the program, but there was no warning whatsoever. I won't be purchasing this program after the developer pulled this trick. It was dirty of them, and makes me seriously question their ethics. I will find an alternative.

Sorry, Senuti, but I won't be recommending you any longer to my friends and customers and the link to your program has just been removed from my website. Goodbye, old friend.

WILL2009  Senuti is -- or, more accurately, was -- a useful, easy-to-use program for transferring files from my iPod to my desktop or back into iTunes. Set-up was easy. Just download it and use it.

Documentation for how to use it was hard to come by. One just had to be intuitive and poke around a bit to figure it out. But, as I wrote, it was a fairly easy-to-use program.

The problem came with the latest release (January, 2009). Without warning, the programmers decided to switch from a freeware (with a button for donations) version to a TRIAL version that expired with a certain number of downloads, or in a fixed number of days, whichever came first.

That's where the problems begin.

No reputable software developer handles things like that -- switching to a paid version without warning. So I immediately went from a happy customer to a severely dissatisfied customer. Now I don't trust them. Now, Senuti's occasional quirks (like not automatically skipping files it thinks it can't download, or not recognizing differences in file size but going solely by file name when downloading -- and refusing to download files of a similar name) become huge. Now, because I'm paying for this item, I expect it be perfect. And I expect customer service to be responsive and darn cheery.

Senuti was a great program -- when it was free. Now, at $18, it's a relic that I'll immediately seek to replace.

Beware Senuti!

APEMAN  You are upset over $18 dollars?

I thought I was tight. Just be glad you've had the opportunity to use this software for free for so long.

The developer may not had any choice in the matter. Times are tough for all. I don't begrudge him a few dollars.

D9  You sort of contradict yourself, Apeman. You chastise Will2009 over $18 being a small amount but then justify the developer for making money in hard times. Don't hard times affect all, whether you're trying to make $18 or keep it?

My .02¢ is the opinion that a developer always has the right to charge as he/she sees fit for a product, and it's our choice to decide whether that's appropriate for purchase. But once that price has been established, a reputable, nay, a smart developer will know that any adjustment will need to be justified by a proportional advance in the product, or at least, a compensation to those who invested originally (discounts)...otherwise, you face the wrath of poor advertisement like these comments which will doom any profit you would see otherwise.

WILL2009  I've used Senuti for years, probably since it was first released. It saved my keister more times than I can count.

HOWEVER...

The latest update came with a shocking revelation: The version they updated me to was a TRIAL version that would expire in days (or with a certain number of downloads) and the only way out was to pay $18.

I've seen bait-and-switch tactics before. But never like this. Replacing -- without warning -- a usable version with one that requires payment was low-handed. Senuti is useful, sure. But it's far from perfect. And it's certainly not worth $18.

The programmer could have handled this whole thing much better by warning people about the upcoming pay-to-play release, not just switching it secretly. I don't do business with highway robbers. I'll certainly seek out alternatives to Senuti.

My suggestion: forget Senuti. Find another program that does something similar.

RABBITHOLE  SENUTI: hiccups, jumps, and spits? Flawed Transfer...?!?

I've got a big mess on my hands, and I'm looking for advice.

I've always had a lot of music: (though I suppose that's relative): about 4500 songs... (these are backed-up on DVD), PLUS in August I briefly found a music critic boyfriend that added another 1500 songs to my library (rare and special songs that are not backed-up, I only back up once every 6 months).

I also have songs, films, and television shows I've purchased from the iTunes store. (thus DRM protected)

I didn't have any problems until my computer upgraded iTunes 7 to iTunes 8... then I noticed that little exclamation points started appearing next to my music: missing files. (oh nooooo!)

I thought it was a problem with ME, until I bought an entire season of a TV show on iTunes, and the next time I booted up my computer, it was missing. Afraid that my media collection was starting to look like Swiss cheese, I found a program to get my music off the iPod itself (still a fully intact library) and onto my computer. After un-installing iTunes 8, (and re-installing iTunes 6), I decided to use a program called PodWorks to move my library from the iPod back to the library. This didn't copy my entire library (only 1300 songs total). At this point I decided to use a similar program called Senuti. Senuti seemed to get everything. At this point I had multiple copies of files (17,000 files in total: 120GB of info, blech!), so I bought a copy of iDupe, to remove the duplicates. It worked beautifully,

...but there's a problem.

Now when I listen to my music, I notice that all the files are VERY flawed. There are hiccups, jumps, spits, and sometimes you get halfway through the song and iTunes just moves to the next song. The only possible explanation (I assume) is that the program I used to get the info off my iPod didn't work properly.

In essence, I've lost most of my music. I think the good plan would be to delete my entire library, then find a REAL program that works to get my stuff safely off the iPod. Can you tell me of a good program that would do this?? (presumably NOT PodWorks, NOT Senuti...)

Here are my computer specs: (I am a Mac User, running OS 10.5.6)

Model Name: iBook G4

Model Identifier: PowerBook6,5

Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (1.2)

Processor Speed: 1.2 GHz

Number Of CPUs: 1

L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB

Memory: 768 MB

Bus Speed: 133 MHz

Boot ROM Version: 4.8.7f1

I'm running the newest OS. Perhaps I should go back to the old one for Senuti to run properly....???

APPLE REPAIR  I HATE THIS PROGRAM.

I'm a technician and I charge by the hour. I paid the 18 bucks for this app so I could import a customers iPod to his Mac.

He had over 8,000 songs. I installed it, clicked Transfer, selected to have it import into itunes and left it running.

HALF HOUR LATER...

I came back in a half our later to find that only 40 songs were copied! There was a stupid dialogue on the screen that said something like "UNABLE TO COPY SONG. TRACK 08 'Bye Bye Bye' cannot be copied because of an error" (or whatever.)

DO I CARE? NO, I DO NOT!

Skip the damn file for God's sake. So for the next 3 hours I had to babysit Senuti because every 5 minutes it would stop the entire transfer because it couldn't copy a single file and it's too retarded to skip it, while my client is calling me every 15 minutes saying: "Is it done yet? Is it done yet?"

Until there is an option in the preferences to skip songs it cannot copy, it's not worth 18 bucks. More like $4. I HATE SENUTI

SILVASURFER  Ouch. Yes agree that the developer most certainly has the right to charge for this great app which has been free now for ages, but he should have a look around the market at competitors and see what they charge and what features they offer, because here the 'new Senuti' does not stack up.

Going across to PodWork; price is right, interface is good and does exactly the same thing only better and cheaper. Rule number one, don't price yourself out of the market especially when you're not unique in your offering.

INLOVEWITHSENUTI  Um. Senuti just SAVED my life. My VAIO has been non-responsive for almost a year now. I just got a MacBook and was beyond determined to transfer my music from my iPod onto my computer. I couldn't have been more scared to plug my iPod in to a new computer -- I was convinced that no matter what precautions I took, everything would be deleted. BUT! Prepare your iPod properly (which you don't need your old computer to do) and you will not experience ANY problems.

Seriously, so happy. Maybe I'm being a little dramatic. But I'm a musician, and my iPod is pretty much my best friend.

:) Good luck!

VWCHICK909  Senuti is my new favorite app!! It worked perfectly to transfer songs from my iPod to my Mac. Following the simple, easy to use "quick" instructions, I disabled syncing in iTunes before connecting my iPod, then launched Senuti to transfer songs that were not in my existing iTunes library. I especially appreciate the blue dot next to the song titles indicating that they were already in my library. I experienced no system instability. Senuti worked as promised, both fast and effective. Thank you developers!!

BRUCE_Y  You may have already found this out...

The messages in iTunes are more draconian than they need to be. Part of the near-universal scare people to not do things that may turn out badly...

I have similar setup to you: a good ole green aluminum iPod Mini 2ndGen. A very solid iPod that is most definitely still going strong. One of their best!

In my case, I was able to set Disk Mode, but that may be because I had it set previously.

Make sure you use their 'preparatory' step of holding down Cmd-Opt when you attach your iPod Mini.

What I found, in my case, was that clicking to Manually manage On or Off and back again, always brought up the scary notice that I may have to eject (when turn on manual) or all music will be copied from Mac to iPod if I turn off manual. But, for me, it turns out that no music will be copied UNLESS I additionally click the Music/Sync (on) and APPLY buttons.

So as long as you DO NOT CLICK APPLY, but DO go to the Music tab and check or uncheck the desired playlists and THEN after all that, you would click the SYNC button to get music copied from Mac to IPod.

Your mileage may vary, but for me, all seems well.

COUGARBLUE  Tymon, I won't tell you the ole" "well you should have backed up and not erased anything until after installation, but that said, you can set your summary iTune page for your iPod to not auto synchronize, and on each individual category Pictures, Movies, Playlists, etc, you can make them all manual, where you pick the settings. Use either the back up command under the FILE menu to back up all your iTunes files after first consolidating them, under the ADVANCED menu. Senuti.

Key with Senuti is reliability, it will not lose any files, use the help menu to take each step to begin, backing up to the extra head drive and ALSO back up to DVD with the FILE menu backup. I am a cheerleader for this program. This is the best iPod retrieve utility and FREE.

TYMON  I have a question about senuti... I recently bought an external HD to move my music onto but for some reason allot of the files didn't copy and I had already deleted the original from from my main HD. All the tracks still remain on my iPod, question is... Doesn't your iPod start to update as soon as you plug it in to the computer? If this starts happening and iTunes starts to replace the library on the iPod won't that cause all of the music to be lost? How do you stop iTunes from updating the iPod as soon as you plug it in? Thanks!

VIVALAVIDA  i just transfer most of my musics from my 30gb ipod (selecting only good and not trash so taking longer time) i use senuti with few hiccups, although thumb up for its speed!

I have the same error message saying Unable to transfer songs to iTunes, because something open on iTunes etc. I have either Cancel or Continute, when I clicked Continue the application continue to transfer the songs.

MY PROBLEM - huge one ...some of the album and songs are stubborningly un-transferable for no reasons!

I fixed this by download IpodRip - less convenient as they do not show you what you've already have on your iTunes (like Senuti does) nonetheless, it works just to fix the hiccups.

I won't use it as main utility to transfer whole lots of my library / playlist though as I think its interface is less user-friendly than Senuti, despite same speed!

It could be alternative to those who can't work Senuti though.

good luck

TERABITHIA  Does Senuti only work with the computer that your ipod is synced to? i.e., can it be used to copy music from someone else's ipod? (Before you start saying this is illegal-- I have friends who have their own music that they wrote and recorded on their ipods, and they certainly have the right to distribute it if they want, and this seemed like an easy way to do it.) I plugged in a friend's ipod and when itunes asked me if I wanted to erase it and sync it to my computer I said no, and after that Senuti didn't show any files or work at all.

SQHARAWA  In response to your inquiry, Senuti does not import the songs directly into iTunes. It will dump them into a folder on your hard drive (which you can specify). You must then manually import the songs themselves into your iTunes library. This can be done by simply dragging the folders Senuti has created into the iTunes window. Hope this helps.

COUGARBLUE  Senuti is one of those simple, it will do the job, nothing more, nothing less essential pieces of software. I recently used Senuti to add 6500 songs to a new hard drive and it preformed perfectly with all songs added in less than 2 hours.

The interface is a little bit different, than previous versions so read the help manual on "Getting Started". That said, it's simple to use, you have a iTunes like view of your iPod's contents, and you can either drag or or use a button to add any songs to your copy of iTunes. You pick your destination in the preferences, be careful not to duplicate every song, by hitting the button twice. I advise my friends with laptops to use a WD Passport or similar Simple drive in the 160-250 gig range as the destination rather than your internal hard drive to preserve space and yet have a portable drive with no need for AC power. Apple with all the "are you sure you want to do this" advisory messages failed to add a message, warning users that it you open iTunes without having your portable drive or other drive containing your songs attached, the OS will automatically change your preferences making the storage point for your songs, your internal drive. Then if you later add the portable drive it will copy every song to your internal drive which may not have the space.

With Senuti you can easily drag your Playlists to iTunes and all the songs in your playlist will be added also. I see no reason to pay for any other programs to transfer your songs from your iPod. Senuti is proven, dependable, safe, and FREE.

ISILVER  In iTunes I have the "iTunes Music folder location" preferences set to "Macintosh HD/Music", and in Senuti preferences I have the "Save Location" set to "iTunes Music Folder", but when I clicked on "Transfer", Senuti moved all the files to "Macintosh HD/Users/Me/Music/iTunes" which isn't the correct folder as set in iTunes preferences. Perhaps the developer could make it clearer that "iTunes Music Folder" is in the Users Music folder, not the folder indicated in the preferences.

Aside from that issue, it's great thanks.

BKZFYNEST1  I got my iPod all plugged in (running an 80gb classic ipod with an iMacG5) and the options "enable disk use" and "manually manage music.." are checked and applied. Senuti loads up just fine - I see all my iTunes music, podcasts, and movies there. However, when I select the song and choose Transfer, i get a pop-up saying "Senuti was unable to copy the song

"Senuti was unable to copy the song "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing". An error occurred while trying to copy the file. If this continues to be an issue, please report it."

HELP!!

DEMOLITION  osa,

You can't enable disk use for the Touch because it has no built-in disk access functions.

There are hacks to enable it, but it requires third-party utilities. Search Google for "ipod touch disk use" and you'll find several sites that show you how to do it.

VERYCARLA  I see that it doesn't like external libraries. I'm trying to merge two libraries, one on my 60gb internal drive and one on a 400gb external drive while keeping all the metadata (reviews, play counts, etc) intact. Since iTunes stupidly ignores this information, I've decided the easiest method is to use my iPod. And trust me, from what I've been able to tell, this is the easiest option. Senuti works fine if I'm copying from the iPod to the library on my internal drive, but not to the library on the external drive. It copies, but does not update the library at all.

Is this a bug, or is the expected behaviour? If it's a bug, I hope you can fix it. Thanks!

2. During transfer I get the following message after every third or forth transfered song: "Senuti was unable to add songs to iTunes. This is most likely because iTunes has a dialog displayed. VERYCARLA  However it does NOT have any effect on the song tags, which means if you add the tracks to iTunes it will still display the songs correctly, and also rename the files to comply with the tags. I know this because I just copied a bunch of Japanese music with Japanese tags from my iPod. I copied the files to my desktop, where they showed up as garbage characters. Upon importing them into iTunes however they appeared normal and showed up correctly in the iTunes Library folder.

STRAPONLOVER  By far the worst computer experience I've ever had has been trying to get my song files onto my new MacBook laptop. It seems that Apple has created a disincentive to purchase a new computer.

I downloaded Senuti and used it. The instructions were not very clear, and I ended up transferring the songs twice, which exceeded the hard drive limit of 80G, and my laptop shutdown.

Apple genius copped their usual attitude. I had to buy an external hard drive to transfer all the files so the computer would boot up. I bought it from OfficeMax because I am NEVER giving Apple any of my money ever again.

The songs were duplicated on the external drive, and I had to take the laptop back to the Attitude Bar at the Apple store where they rushed me through the solution. I uploaded the new songs on my laptop to my new external hard drive and all the songs were erased. The "Genius" at the Attitude Bar would not let me write down the instructions she gave me, and now all the songs are gone! I am back to square one.

Thankfully, i have the songs on my iPod ( I hope ), but now I am downloading Senuti for the second time.

ABBYS35  Read the directions and reviews carefully. I had no problems with the software, but was very nervous to use it, based on what I read. The directions could be written better, maybe if I donate, they'll hire a technical writer to help with that. The interface is nice, but if the directions came with more screenshots, things would be more intuitive. I didn't understand that Senuti would upload my music into it's system first, so I was surprised to see them there, and thought that if they were there, I was all set. Turns out you have to highlight (drag and drop did not work for me) the songs you want to be copied, and press the arrow button in the upper right corner (can't remember if it says "copy", probably not). It then copies it to your default iTunes folder, or whichever folder you select. Once I figured all this out, I was AMAZED at how simple it was. The directions make it seem much harder than it is.

Good luck!

STEVE4656  The instructions in "Senuti help" are tricky to understand right away and need several readings because of the use of double negatives.

Simple back-ups of songs from and iPod to a mac works fine, but it will not transfer songs directly into iTunes.

The "Senuti help" suggests songs can be transferred into iTunes by drag-and-drop of individual songs or, playlists. I wish it were so, absolutely nothing happened for me.

After hours of trial and error, I can only recommend this software if you need to make a simple back-up of songs on an iPod. Do not expect to transfer songs straight into iTunes.

COUGARBLUE  Great program and FREE

Having better step by step would be great. I have used Senuti a dozen times, it's a life saving and more trustworthy than the shareware programs that do the same thing. No reports of lost song files with Senuti, which sets it alone. Big problem, in using the program I didn't lose any of 6800 songs, but I was never able to recover a set of playlists. I checked in all the right preferences yet nothing. Please give out better directions, esp. how to change iTunes preferences to stop auto synch as soon as you plug in the iPod, or how to use an iPod not already linked to the computer you are using.

Fix these problems or my problems with your poor directions, put out a 1.0 version, and even charge a reasonable fee for your efforts, but please help us out.

TERMINALMAN  I have not had any problems using senuti, but I did read their Senuti Help pages several times first (start Senuti, then select the help menu->Senuti Help). Do this *before* you connect up your iPod.

Basically you have to make sure that the iPod is set to not automatically update from iTunes as soon as it's plugged it.

It's clear that if you don't do things in the right order in some cases then iTunes might wipe all the music from your iPod, which is what you're trying to avoid...

So follow their instructions carefully. Especially if iTunes pops up and asks if you want to wipe out the iPod contents with what's in iTunes, SAY NO!!

I used senuti 0.33 to transfer 3500 songs from iPod into my new Macbook, so far everything seems good and all the music I wanted transferred is there and sounds just like before.

HARIDINE  Wish someone told me about these hints before I used Senuti:

1. do not plug in the ipod into the Mac. My auto sync setting erased my iPod content

2. in Senuti preferences set the correct path to where iTunes stores the music files. Do not assume the default is correct!

3. in Senuti preferences enable the copy to iPod field. Without this set, Senuti will only copy files to iTunes, but not add them to the library.

STONGEY  I used to like Senuti, but noticed the last couple of times that I've used it, it doesn't copy all of my songs. It misses a seemingly random number of random tracks uncopied. With a large collection, you can imagine the frustration trying to find those missing tracks... so I'm looking for an alternative program.

Is this perhaps caused by multilingual characters in the tags? Dunno.

I wished it worked, because I quite liked the interface.

MEGAMAN61282  So apparently Senuti sorta works with the new 2nd gen iPod Shuffle, but only if you if you keep that "erase and sync" pop-up open. Unfortunately, since the popup essentially "freezes" iTunes, Senuti stops at the copying process.

Not to steal any thunger from Senuti, because I've always supported the little program and love it to bits, but the only way I've found to get music from your 2nd gen Shuffle is to use iLinkPod:

http://www.ilinkpod.com/

Plug your shuffle in and when iTunes prompts you to erase and sync, simply ignore it and keep it open. Point iLinkPod to your shuffle on the desktop and hit "Link". You should now see a several folders with 4 letter acronym-ed files inside. Looks scary, but once you drag the files into iTunes, they show up with proper names and even album art.

Hope this helped some peoples!

D9  Maybe I'm missing something but this is not the be-all, end-all solution to iPod transfers. While it can simply copy your entire iPod library over to a new/reformatted computer, it's ability to handle multiple tasks is limited or convoluted.

In my case, where I wanted to take my current setup w/ playlists off my iPod and put them on my new Mac mini, I had problems at every step. Sure the entire Library copied but adding my playlists caused additional copies of songs, regardless of which preference I selected, to be added to the Library. In cases where I had the same song on multiple playlists, that song would be duplicated that many times.

Like I said, I tried every preference setting to avoid, but nothing seemed to change. Maybe I'm overlooking something obvious, but at the least, this is not an intuitive solution. I'm still searching for the Holy Grail in iPod transferring that will copy my entire catalog, lists and all, to my computer.

MISTER E.  Absolutely phenomenal! The GUI is intuitive (looks just like iTunes), the process is easy (a tenet of Apple's), and it's well worth the price. I haven't had any problems with it and it actually made life easy for me. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

ANONYMOUS  Clearly the best iPod/iTunes freeware out there. From my experience, this is the only application that allows the user to easily select songs or albums to transfer from the iPod to iTunes. Other applications force you to import the entire iPod library.

Very easy to use! Fantastic interface! Best freeware I have seen so far in 2005!!!

KAINJOW  Such a sleek and smooth interface - love it. A few things I noticed - you should be able to drag a playlist on your iPod onto the iTunes library in the app. You can only drag tracks. Also, a little bug - if you're viewing a playlist under iTunes, and then collapse the iTunes group, it selects the Library group of your iPod, but the tracks for that playlist are still showing. It should refresh to show the tracks for the Library since that is what's selected.

IANANDREW  Best freeware version of an iPod ripper I have used. Only concern is that if the ID3 tag contains a backslash (/) in the song title, artist title, or album title it neglects to load that song, so you will have to go through and do those ones individually. Great because it contains the playlists too.

RMCMAHAN  Finally -- a free iPod utility (I'm cheap) that shows playlists as well as song titles. The only improvements I can think of is 1) to be able to select a playlist name and have Senuti copy the all tracks from the playlist without having to select the songs first, 2) to have a user-selectable option in preferences for Senuti to automatically create a folder (using the playlist name) at your selected location and copy the songs to that folder, and 3) to be able to edit info directly, (title, album, artist, & genre) if necessary, rather than going to iTunes.

ANONYMOUS  rmcmahan,

Agreed on the fact that it's nice to have a free iPod utility. I'm cheap, too. That's why I made this little application. I like all of your suggestions, and have comments/questions about all of them:

1) Is it that much harder to select the playlist, then click command-a to select all of the songs, then copy them? I like simplicity in the applications I use, and while I see that as maybe being a little easier, I think it might just be a little unnecessary. It wouldn't be hard for me to put in, so I might just do it and not make it one of the default toolbar items.

2) That's what I'm going to be working on next. That and fixing a few other bugs, but having all of the songs in one location isn't too useful. Having them organized is very nice.

3) Never going to happen. It would be very nice, I agree, and it would be lovely to be able to add songs to your iPod with Senuti, too, but I'm not going to ever do that. The name Senuti comes because it it iTunes spelled backwards, and the intention of the software is to do the opposite of iTunes. The application works so quickly because it reads a file on the iPod, the iTunesDB file, to get the contents of the iPod. To edit song information, I would have to edit that file, and I prefer to just read it, so that I don't ever mess up anyone's iPod. iTunes does all of that well, and I see no point in trying when it could cause WAY too many problems.
