BOUSOZOKU This seems to be the only client that supports legacy MSN Messenger video as well as Asian languages. Adium doesn't support video and aMSN didn't support Asian languages the last time I tried it. Microsoft Messenger will be supporting video the next time round, as they're waiting for the Windows version to catch up. This is a good client. It works reasonably well at all times. CPU usage seems reasonable finally and it's able to be themed so it can take on other look-and-feel skins, including the Mac OS X look-and-feel. I've used it to connect to a number of MSN Messenger/Live Messenger clients and it always seems to do okay but it's not spectacular. Version 2.0 is being developed at the current time. CASTLE ROSE Wow, 1.9 is Great. Gone are the bugs from 1.8 and the interrupted video chats. The new logo is very nice. I wish It had it as the new logo showing in the opening progress bar too. I really don't know what the others are talking about regarding CPU use. I have it open on a G4 1.5Ghz. Powerbook. My activity is 4.5% to 8.3% and only ~10.3% with the Emoticons panel open. I'm moving back to Mercury from aMSN. At least untill Adium gets video. Thanks, guys for a great product. (Version 1.9)

PENDEZ I don't like this app for 2 main reasons: 1. how much RAM does this thing need? I mean seriously? 2. Half of my contacts list doesn't appear anyway so as a messenger app its pretty useless. binned it and switched to Adium. much better, much faster (Version 1.8)

MARK EVERITT I really want to like Mercury. I've been using it for quite a while, and I've stuck to it because it offers so many features that I use. However, it has some problems. It's a bit buggy for a start. It'll randomly crash from time to time, or hang for a while. The worst thing by far is the amount of RAM this uses. Activity Monitor usually reports that Mercury is hogging ~ 150MB of RAM, which puts it at the top of the list most of the time. I only have 1GB of RAM, and giving over this much memory is no longer an option. I'm afraid that unless this can be optimised somehow to use much less memory, I'll have to bin it for good. MOGWAI1983 What on earth are the developers thinking? Have they been smoking too much special stuff? This application has been next to useless from the very outset. Now this is worse than useless, impressivey useless... impressive even for the dotless morons who wrote it. You cannot select text fields to even enter your msn email address yet alone when you eventually get around this ridiculous flaw, it is slow, buggier than a rainforest on a hot summers day, seems to be eating an impossible amount of RAM and almost 100% of my CPU. Eventually this app becomes so bogged down that the whole machine gives up and hangs on the perpetual beachball, not allowing you to switch apps or force quit. I couldn't even ssh into the machine to kill the process. Kindly decist from developing the hideous wart of an application any further. It will make everyones days go that much better. VERTIGO1990 What seemed to work for me is, open your router's config page in a browser (192.168.0.1 99% of the time), and find something that says something about port forwarding, and add whatever port Mercury is using, which can be found in your Global Settings>Webcam. Also in that same seletion, there is something called "Send every x ms" or similar, the default seems to be 300, you may wish to lower it a little bit. Also, you can use lower quality. (Version 1710)
| Apr 30 2006 |

ANONYMOUS for functions, it was great - made me feel a little less behind my other friends who don't have MACs. Extra functions were nice - seeing when people close sessions, etc. While it didn't make my computer dead slow or freeze, I could hear my fans whirling like mad and I only had one other app open. Made me fear what would happen if I wanted to switch between this and Photoshop. I didn't change the skin, so this could be unfounded, but aesthetically, I foiund the contact list awkward. Proportions seemed to be stretched and everytime I tried to change the window size, it took a while to reappear. Overall, I think it's probably one of the best out there, and sure, it doesn't have to be beautiful, but i'd be more inclined to replace my MSN 5 if it didn't make me fear my powebook would freeze. The only thing is that it EATS LOTS OF PROCESSOR !! , I have a dual G5 1.8 GHZ and I often have to force quit Mercury cause its eating all processor speed. MAybe its because its writen in Java... ANONYMOUS I regularly have Mercury running on my 1.33GHz Powerbook for days at a time, and it doesn't eat my CPU/RAM. It uses a bit more RAM than some programmes, since it's Java, but not enough to cause problems. It might be worth mentioning your problems on the Mercury forums, and see if anyone can help you. Sometimes changing the skin you are using can be a useful way of making it use less of your resources. (Version 1709)

NEGATRON The .$1 is a value used by a program called msn plus for colours. If a contact is using the normal msn Messenger and has msn plus installed on their machine it will make the text after it a certain colour. Early versions used the values .$0 through to .$15 to represent the standard 16 colours but recently this has been altered to use rgb values like this .$(255,128,0). To turn it off you need to turn it off you will need to loacte the setting "Display MSN+ colours" in mercury although this has been removed on some of the later versions. If so in the chat window click "Colour" in the text formatting toolbar and click "reset" then "ok". This should hopefully solve the problem. (Version 1709_RC5)

ANONYMOUS Where is the Mac messenging program which can deal with pretty much all the features of the PC version 7 client, including some webcam and video-conferencing support? That's right, Mercury is the only one. If you use MSN much, then Mercury is the only option, since it has by far the best features support. Fine, so it only does Jabber in addition, not AIM/Yahoo/whatever. But it does MSN far better than the competition. That's why it is such a useful program. (Version 1709_RC4)

ANONYMOUS Sounds like your web browser is having problems with the redirection scripts on Macupdate. The second file you downloaded shouldn't have been a .php file, but a .dmg file. If you rename it to that, then it should sort it. Alternatively, try downloading through a different web browser, or directly from the Mercury website. (Note that if you want the Mac beta/release candidate versions, you will need to download them from a thread in the forums there.) (Version 1709_RC4)

BEN KUBBENGA ok, search for a folder called winks. right-click (or ctrl-click) on a wink and click the 3rd option (info). Now all winks will play in the prog you selected. (Version 1709_RC3b)

GARBAGE From : http://www.mercury.to/index.php?sub=Changelog Add support for direct connect conversations Add all options in the button panel to the menubar aswell Add a better encryption for conversations Improve the simplicity: simplify how to remove an account, further seperate normal usage (like setting a single avatar) and advanced usage (multi ava) Known Bug: With the new input area, sometimes you will see the default font (small font size, black etc...) Known Bug: With the new input area, the attributes change when you have an empty input area (compared to when you type a char just after that) Not Fixed: The new cache system prevents the nodes from changing color when selected, nothing I can do about it added a progress view to avatar receiving (might be in .04) added some new speed hacks added speed tests to all MSN setting pages and try catches with ExceptionHandler references added synchronisation to chat area, should prevent the emoticons not appearing (you can notice this happening by hearing a beep) added a minimum event interval option, if the same event for the second time happens within X seconds, it is not shown in event viewer, event box etc... added a open url button in the msn profile viewer general view heeft zelfde als list view (contact toevoeg systeem) added /setpm to set a personal message added %pm and %song in the list view added personal message and current song in the tooltip split the privacy panel a bit, now has a seperate backup contact list item cleaned up some hotmail/email code chatPanel ID and the current chatpanel contact didn't match up in very specific cases, this could cause a lot of problems, messages not coming through, 2 convo's for 1 person etc... (very small chance it happens but still a major bug...) disabled a lot of commands in a multi convo to insure the correct contact is being used in these commands... removed moods (didn't work anymore anyway) fixed a problem with some settings that are empty but still seen as settings (Version 1709.05)

ANONYMOUS When i came across this I was extremly delighted. For a while now I've felt that that the Mac version of msn wasn't up to par with the Window's version. It would be so embarassing when friends would ask why i didn't have an avatar or would invite me to play games. Now I feel just like them and feel equal. The only probem I find is that the avatar is sometimes to big and can't be contained. Otherwise this is a great program and I'm happy that someone made this! (Version 1708 RC2)

DAXZIZ Been searching the net for a good MSN client for my Mac in a long time. I wanted something which was close to the Windows version, fast and as bugfree as possible. I tried SEVERAL applications and finally ran into this ( took quite some time to find though ). I downloaded the application, dragged it into /Applications and ran it. It looked really good ( OH... a topless woman with her back against me shows up - oh no, oh no, oh no... NOT, what a lame comment from last reviewer. It's on the limit to even be called erotic. Take a walk at summertime, and you'll not see anything else ( Well unless you're from Iraq or some other lame country where the women are packed into the carbet ). Besides you can just switch it or censor it, or whatever you feel you HAVE to do ) I setup my account very easily, and the interface ( though a few bugs and very JAVA looking) was very smooth an ran fast... a few clicks and it looked like AQUA.. nice enough, but I've seen that before. Signing it was MUCH better than any other I've seen, and that including aMSN, official MSN, Fire! and such... it was working, it was providing info.. nice and cool. The contact list can be modified to look and act as you please. Top points for that.. having this power is something I've always wanted. I was however even more amased when I saw the chatwindow and how it could do tapped windows... very, very nice. The click on the smiley icon, and the window expanded and included an entire, easy to update smiley list. Brilliant. It has winks and was MSN 7 compatible ( should not be something you would require, but expected to find now ). There's even a ( still limited ) game option to play the well known small games from MSN - I didn't expect this, but I find it cool and that gives more to the feature score IMO. Stability.. well used it for weeks, and it has never crashed or died. I say.. continue with what you're doing here, it works, it's brilliant and it aims for the young ( around teenage ) people. Do not switch a splashscreen just because some might be offended, of course there's limits for morale, I agree upon that, but your current in 1707 can't harm anybody, and you already have the switch option. You might want to make it a little more even for the girls who download it... I mean.. you have quite some photos in there for us boys, but only 2 for the girls... might want to ask your GF to find a few to add. Remember copyright crap here :S Personally I do find the avatars in the chatwindow can become a problem, if you select a photo which is to large.. it'll cover the otehr persons avatar and it'll "ruin" the chatwindow.. nasty bug, if you ask me. Some solution should be found here. Limit to a max size in chatwindow, but show entire photo if mouse is held over for 3 secs ??? Good luck with the further progress of this brilliant application. I haven't been able to find the source, I might have looked myself blind, or it might not even be opensource. In the second case, is there any chance it will be ? -Daxziz (Version 1708 RC2)

ANONYMOUS (Note: this is a review of version 1707, which the author says is the latest release the public should be using.) Hmm... where should we start? I downloaded the software to see how it compared to the other IM programs I've used. Upon launching the program, I was greeted by a photo of a topless woman with her back to the camera. I'm not a prude, but this is hardly a suitable splash screen; I must say I'm quite interested as to what a topless woman has to do with IM. After that... nothing. I didn't see anything else on my screen from the app; the only ways I could tell it was even running were the icon in my dock and the blank menubar stating Mercury was the frontmost app. I presume this is done in Java, as the standard Mac menubar isn't being utilized. I returned to MacUpdate to see if anyone else was having a similar problem. I opened the reviews page, and noticed the screenshot at the bottom of the page. To say that I was disgusted would be an understatement. I don't care what your politics are, but your use of the word "FAG" as a derogatory term is not only immature, but tasteless, insulting, and despicable. Shame on whoever contributed this screenshot, and shame on MacUpdate for posting it. I eventually did get the app working, and found absolutely no redeeming qualities about it. It immediately landed in my trash. I'd rather stick with Adium, or even Microsoft's painfully outdated client, than use this rubbish. (Version 1708 RC1)

JOEL MUELLER In reply to "Shame on MacUpdate for posting the screenshot" - it was submitted by the developer, and the image is no doubt a paid advertisement inside of the program. Not actually part of the program itself, and these developers may not even be aware that one of their advertisers posting this banner images. (Version 1708 RC1)
| Dec 13 2004 |
ANONYMOUS it isn't a banner (or any kind of advertisement) since Mercury doesn't have any advertisement...it is freeware without ads the picture is just a simple avatar of the guy he was chatting with while taking the screenshot (Version 1708 RC1)

ANONYMOUS I never said you should be using 1707, I recommended it if having problems... About the screen: I didn't even see the fag part, I agree it might be insulting but you are overstating it a bit... I changed it, thx for telling (although it could be said a bit nicer but that's just me) about the splash screen, it was my personal one, that it got in the final is my fault, corrected in the 1708 beta releases (which can be downloaded from here). about the rest of your comment, fine if you don't like it but it would help if you explained why, I know of a lot of people who like it and only a few who don't, so explaining why you don't like it would help me improve it... saying it's rubish doesn't tell me what to improve... DANNY Very good, just a few little niggles that you will probably forget about. I can't, for the life in me get it to remember the skin that I set for it however. (Version 1707)

ANONYMOUS If you start it up you CAN change it to english in the menu bar. Pretty easy. But it is a good program for msn, but the send area is way too big for my liking. I would rather be able to see more of the chat then have a huge type window. (Version 1705)

ANONYMOUS Absolutely phenominal!! By far the best looking, most stable, and easy-to-use MSN client I've seen so far on the Mac. The author [Danny] seems genuinely interested in the project and is constantly working on updates to further the progress. No complaints here, it's everything I wished we Mac users had out of the original Microsoft version! (Version 1704b07)

CRAZYSWEDISHGUY I hate it when mac apps try to imitate windows for no reason whatsoever. Why the hell does it not have a regular menu bar, instead of the crappy windoze toolbar?? (Version 1704b07)

ANOTHERSWEDISHGUY :P CrazySwedishGuy, the reason it looks like a windows app is that it is a Java application. But as noted several times in this area you just have to change to the MacOS X Skin in the Java submenu of the skins menu. There is a new version out now (1704). This thing is great! Once you have it setup in way you are comfortable with it's beautiful :-) (Version 1704b07)

IMACINCALGARY I've tried every other MSN 'clone' there is out there for the Mac, and this is by far the best one yet! Awesome features comparable to MSN6 on the PC, fast, nice skin-able interface, but still some kinks to work out... no biggie. Download it!! (Version 1703)

ZOEE This is a great MSN client. Brings most of the Windows MSN function and is nice and easy to use. Lots of settings and extra features. If you use the Java/Mac OS X skin it works very much like a Mac application. I was using aMSN before this, but this app looks nicer, is faster and has some more features! (Version 1703)

ANONYMOUS At last! An MSN program that doesn't sign me out every 2 minutes, includes MSN6 emoticons/avatars/backgrounds etc, working file transfer and loads more! I have waited for a good msn chat client like this one for a long time and i'm very pleased. Interface and one or two other things need improved, but it's looking good so far! (Version 1703)

ANONYMOUS Hmmmm this was out ages ago... nevermind :) Great MSN app, got all the stuff you need - working file sending/receiving, MSN Avatars, etc.. If you set the skin to Java/Mac OS X then you have a nice app that fits in pretty well with the OS. (Version 1703)
