SQUIGLES  Can't understand why people are whining, with all the software I have ever used. If I stumble across a problem, I let the developer know.

That's not being a Beta tester, thats what you call being helpful.

I did encounter a minor problem whilst using BBC. I sent an email to Freeverse, within a few hours I had an email response from them.

ANONYMOUS  This game used to be free. Now it isn't. I don't mind folks who do alot of work getting money for their work, but you should also allow access to the older, free version. That way you can choose to pay for the extra bells and whistles or not. I choose not.

ANDREW DUNNING  Please note that the previous version of Big Bang Chess still works; you're under no obligation to get the latest version.

That said, this new version provides a number of excellent features. It has the option of using the GNU Chess engine, making it nearly impossible to beat at the highest difficulty level. It features nicer music. As well, there is a new Hot Seat mode, allowing one to see both players.

As well, there are more games than just Chess included in the package; there's also Checkers, Reversi, Mancala, Backgammon, 4-in-a-Row, and Tic-Tac-Toe. At $24.95 US, it's an excellent deal.

So lemme make sure I understand this correctly. I pay you $25 for the ability to not win? Ooh fun!

That may be worth $26.

ANONYMOUS  I'm tired of being your "freeware beta tester". That goes for most companies as well. Stick with the earlier free verison.

ANONYMOUS  I am SO tired of developers and companies distributing software like it's going to be free and then turning around to ask for money. We ALL end up being FREE beta testers because most of us will report issues believing that free software can only be better without the bugs. I feel taken and I am DONE reporting bugs for ANYONE!!!

YAKRALE  I found this on another site, written by the developer, in case anyone is interested:

----

Hi all,

Since Big Bang Chess 1.0 was released six months ago, we've been working very hard to improve it and think it's the best featured, most Mac OS X friendlly, easiest to network, master-level playing Chess game available.

In addition to the tons of new features, it is now part of a suite of games "Big Bang Board Games" (including Backgammon, Chess, Reversi, Mancala and 4-in-a-row) that will be available in retail outlets for $24.95. See http://www.freeverse.com/bbbg/ for more information. All those games are yours for the one price. My apologies that [the other site] doesn't track that above, I'll make sure to post it in the description in the future.

We are a company, and that it is no longer "free" is pretty irrelivant; there was no promise or obligration. We released an early version to gather feedback and because we thought it was cool and stable enough that people would enjoy it. That version won't expire, so if you have it, nothing has changed. You're under no obligation and never were.

Anyway, we are one of the very few Mac-first game companies, and Big Bang Chess is a Mac product-- not a port of some year old PC game. We're proud of it, proud it won two Apple Design Awards, and very happy to have worked hard expanding it to include a suite of games, and bringing it to you for under thirty bucks. Try it, buy it if you agree it's way cool. Please. :-)

Thanks,

Ian

President, Freeverse.

ANONYMOUS  The AI is not smart enough.

Even the so called hardest level is much to easy. That is sad because it´s such a nice looking game

KEVIN  I like the idea of it, but on my powerbook G4 (500MHz) with 512MB ram, it is just too slow... So slow that I cannot believe all the good comments -- I mean, there must be something wrong with my version??? (I am on version 1.21) When this game starts, the CPU goes to, and stays at, 100%... (according to activity monitor). I have killed all other programs, and it is still just too darn slow. The music doesn't even play without "skipping", as there just is not enough CPU left for it...

If I hear about a faster version, I will revisit this novel attempt at a new "universe of gaming"...

UMAROMC  This is a VERY fun chess program... a very novel approach to learning the moving patterns of each piece... well at least I've never seen this before...

ANONYMOUS  With this release there has been a big improvement on the stability - but the chess engine still needs a huge improvement. But graphically it is probably the best version of chess for OSX - and its free.

BARRY FERNELIUS  Some day, this might be a fun little application to use for playing a game of chess with someone else over the network. For now, it's just a bit too buggy.

Forget about this program if you're interested in playing chess against the computer. The program doesn't recognize basic chess rules like a draw based on a three-fold repetition of the same position. And even at the highest level possible for this program, Big Bang Chess plays a comically weak game of chess.

ALEXF  Looks very pretty. Wish I could say more, but it crashes at the beginning of the game after I choose my pieces' style and side. The woman says her quip and then it beachballs.

I'll try the next version :)

ANONYMOUS  Still hangs often when you access the preferences and using iChat to start a game when one person has a router is still a no go.

A MARTIN  The game is very nice but it has crashed Mac OS X 10.3.3 two time for me and my colleague when playing over rendezvous. And I mean TOTAL CRASH. It happened when the game is in the background. Cursor disappears and machine has to be rebooted. Seems to have problems when using other Rendezvous apps. (iChat, iTunes). Made iChat stall with spinning circle for example.

HOOBZ  Could this crash any more? I was just playing it and it bombed out in the middle of three games and hung once in a fourth game requiring a force quit.

ANONYMOUS  Graphically it's nice.

The little touches are well done like when you click on a piece it shows you where you can move. However, conversely if you click on an opponants piece it doesn't show you their possible moves so as a teaching tool it's of limited value.

Arrows on the board show you the pieces and direction of recent moves, that's great.

However there are some issues. I haven't tried a network game yet, just a solo one, and wathing TOP in the terminal it never dipped below 50% and when it was "thinking" it routinely jumped above 70% on my 733/G4 with over 1 gig of ram in OS 10.3.3 with only iTunes playing an AAC file.

The biggest problem came when, right after the game ended, I clicked to open the game's preferences and it hung with the spinning beachball. I had to force quit it.

I recommend waiting for an update. v1.0 isn't ready for public comsumption yet.

GRADUS  Very nice and ambitious program. The extensive use of Panther technologies (Rendezvous/iChat/iTunes/Mail integration) indicates that Freeverse is keen on earning an Apple Design award. All power to them!

But, freeware or not, this program is not quite there yet. It crashes far too often to be actually useful. Sometimes it crashes immediately on startup, sometimes it crashes as soon as the first dialog window appears. So it looks more like an experimental pre-release to me. I hope there will be a more stable version soon, 'cause I can't wait to have a Rendezvous with those fancy chess pieces ...
