ZWILLIAMS  Up until recently I had been a very happy Quicksilver user. But, after updating to this latest version everything is borked. Quicksilver will no longer run for more than two seconds straight without crashing. I've deleted all the associated files and tried reinstalling to no avail. I tried going back to the old ß54 I'm very disappointed, not at the developers but at how this situation is turning out for me. Quicksilver has become an indispensable part of my routine, and this has really slowed me down.

I hope this can be fixed quickly.

TRIAL&ERROR  Here, on a German system, it works for folders, applications and direct access to preference panes.

It isn’t consistent, though: while the selected match (the one displayed in the bezel) is shown with its localized name, the other matches listed below the bezel are shown with their original names. E. g. "Calculator.app" is "Rechner" in German, and it is found correctly when I start typing "Rec...", but in the list below it still shows as "Calculator.app" in "/Applications/Calculator.app", instead of "Rechner" in "/Programme/Rechner".

GYROSCOPE352  For some reason, this build is much slower for me than the last official build (B54). The old build, why it has the obvious issues related to Snow Leopard, is lightning fast, but the new build is slow. There is a very noticeable delay to pop the window up and when I'm typing - I have to type my query and then wait at least a second or two before the text shows up. Any ideas why I'm having this issue? I seem to be the only one; performance was supposed to be improved in this build.

ELLEE H.  Build b54 hasn't given me any trouble but I'm setting up my new iMac and might as well migrate to b57. I'm one of the skim-the-surface users of Quicksilver who nonetheless is paralyzed without it. I hit spacebar left arrow reflexively when I need an app, so no matter where I am, like at the new UWS Apple Store the other night, I'm momentarily confused if nothing happens. Then I think to myself: "oohhhh... no Quicksilver! *I* have to do it." Thank you to all developers of QS.

FLARK  Ever since leopard, Quicksilver has been unable to find localized folders and applications on my danish version of OSX. This latest update seems to have fixed the issue with folders, however, native applications can only be found by typing their english title. e.g. "Activity monitor" is "aktivitetsovervågning" in danish, but starting to write "akti..." brings up nothing. I have to write "acti..".

This update has brought back hope that QS is not down and out, so I'm really hoping to see this being fixed in a future release. Otherwise, great to see that QS is still being worked on. still one of the most invaluable apps on my mac :)

NITSCHI  I have to agree. I'm really glad that there still/again is some development on Quicksilver, big kudos to all developers/coders!

But I would be even more glad if this bug (or "missing feature") with the localized application names could be re-added to Quicksilver again. BTW: this "issue" has already been added to the project site, take a look here: http://code.google.com/p/blacktree-quicksilver/issues/detail?id=87&can=5

MDOGNRDOG  Quicksilver is not really a supported "product." It is also not one of those typical Mac "it just works" things -- you have to explore how to set up your workflow to exploit the power that Quicksilver possesses, and tinker with settings until you've got it dialed in perfectly.

That being said, I feel CRIPPLED when I accidentally quit Quicksilver, or I'm using a Mac that doesn't have it installed. Apple should hire the developers, and make QS functionality part of the core operating system. Sending files to the proper places, appending text to designated files, attaching files to email, looking up contacts, simple app launching -- these are tasks that would otherwise require several clicks through the Finder hierarchy, sometimes much more than that. But in Quicksilver I'm there in a flash (often with hotkey "triggers" that I've memorized to make it faster still).

The new version, b57, fixes a couple problems that had plagued QS since Alcor, the original developer, abandoned QS to go work on other things. It now runs like a champ.

If you can handle a little tinkering, QS gives you insane, effortless power to get things done. If you can't, don't complain about QS -- it's just not your cup of tea.

DR. GIRLFRIEND  Bye bye Launchbar!

Quicksilver is working just as good as it used to in the good old days. No instability, no system hanging, no crashes like with some of the other previous betas.

And on a more superficial note, I'm elated that I no longer have to look at that ugly orange LB in my dock or my applications folder. And even more elated to save $40.00! (Sorry, ObDev. Little Snitch still rules though and is worth every penny.)

Thanks, Quicksilver Team!

I never knew it was broken, or "dead". I'm glad it wasn't ... not for me anyway. Wanted. Needed.

One of the slickest, most unobtrusive, yet on-demand pieces of software I've ever used.

I've been using Quicksilver β54 (3815) since it was disseminated. I'm on 10.6.1 now. No problems here. Obviously I'm not using the plugins (etc.) that some others are. It's just an instant launcher for me.

Gives me the sort of access I want to my /3rd Party/Applications ... and ../Games, ../Utilities, etc.

NONTROPPO  Why are you posting the same wrong comment again??? QS is opensource and being actively updated, bugs fixed, and new plugins written. Whatever Alcor (the original developer) said last year in an interview (before anyone took over the project), as this is an opensource project, development doesn't depend on Alcor any more...

ICONZ113  QS will never exceed what it was which is the unfortunate part. The people maintaining it are trying to keep it functioning as much as they can but it will never evolve like applications under active development. thats what I mean by dead. their trying to rekindle its functionality, that I understand . And they dont even have access to the source code and framework of all the plugins. So those plugins will never be reimplemented. When an app under development gets updated there are new features and upgrades. When open source QS gets updated its because they got a feature that used to work , working again. I followed the google group for about a year, trying to use QS, but its pointless, its not going anywhere. It will plateau. I promise.

BLACKSMITH_TB  I disagree completely. I know it's possible to have a Bad Experience™ when trying to upgrade to some of the newer betas from an old version (completely uninstalling, deleting prefs, etc. may be necessary). But there's no doubt that the new community-maintained builds are more stable, and have a much smaller memory footprint than the old versions. I've been using 1.0b56a7 since it came out at the beginning of the summer, on 10.5 and 10.6, with no problems whatsoever.

NONTROPPO  Well, the fact that Quicksilver is the first and only launcher to get OpenMeta support shows you that QS still can provide new functionality the other alternatives can't! And for users of Things GTD app, plugin support works for QS, QSB and Launchbar, showing QS is still being actively supported by 3rd party developers.

QS, even if it is not actively "enhanced", is still technically superior to all other alternatives, so even if QS doesn't move forwards, it will still take time for others to catch up.

But moreover, some work *is* being done on the trunk branch, where alcor left a new triggers and plugin architecture for others to advance forward.

I do think that QSB is getting a big shot of active and new development, but sadly the UI is uselessly constrained and it seems to be a management decision to make it that way - there are hundreds of votes in their bug system to add a third-pane ala QS and triggers but it is ignored...

MEEGO  I think Iconz is wrong in calling the project "dead", though he makes a point in that QS has actually seen little evolution in the last years.

Take a look at the changes committed to code: http://code.google.com/p/blacktree-alchemy/source/list

There is only one really dedicated dev, tiennou7, to whom obviously go our warm appreciation.

Despite his hard work - check out the massive number of commits made this summer - the project has sometimes gone for months without any change to the code.

This all said, I still believe that "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". I'm fine with QS being just maintained. But to move forward, QS needs more devs.

LOOKIN2IT  Please could you share with us the source of your crystal ball(s)? If one is not part of an open source project team, one can not state with certainty what that team has planned. Further it is not possibly to state with certainty whether other devs/3rd parties will contribute in the future.

NONTROPPO  b56a7 works brilliantly for me on Snow Leopard 10.6.1. The core plugins all work well. The only one I was missing was file tagging plugin, but recently an OpenMeta plugin has been added which is far better than the old &comment tag method, and interoperable with lots of new metadata management apps on OS X. The display of characters in the triggers dialogs is broken, but triggers themselves work fine; this is just a cosmetic annoyance.

Quicksilver, even in its opensource community guise, is still significantly more powerful and elegant than Google's QSB or Launchbar.

Openmeta plugin available here: http://groups.google.com/group/blacktree-quicksilver/browse_thread/thread/df03c483786ca2da/

ICONZ113  I used to love QS but to use it in Snow Leopard you have to install the updated build where half the plugins are broken, its buggy, clipboard just appears at random, crashes even when I disable the plugins. I have just come to realize that this application is deteriorating and its only going to get worse as time goes on. To add insult to injury the original developer in an interview suggested it would be better to use something else instead. So Im taking his advice and decided to go with launchbar for now to see how it is. Hopefully with QS dead another application will emerge to take its place.

ROBERT  I'm rediscovering Quicksilver after using it for years mostly as a launcher and Address Book interface. Doing more things immediately on the keyboard in its Bezel interface that I used to do by switching applications and to a mouse and back.

And I'm still amazed by it and finding out what I can do. Best interface contribution to computing since the mouse.

To answer some questions here, Quicksilver went open-source about a year ago. There is continued maintenance of Quicksilver b5X, and the start of something new (Google Code braintree-alchemy). This version on MacUpdate may still be what you want to use for the time being, if you're not having troubles.

For more info, google last year's interview on lifehacker. To improve performance, google Quicksilver Performance Issues on the Mac. To learn how to use QS better, check Dan Dickinson's intermediate Quicksilver tutorial.

THE V  QuickSilver is a must for me at home and at work. It has increased my efficiency radically and makes for a 'must have' in my book.

Quicksilver will hereafter be referred to as QS.

QS is very expandable. There are plugins for a number of applications. From email plugins and terminal plugins to note taking, scheduling and even interaction with other devices. I give QS a 5 for features.

Ease of use... QS is easy to use, but as it uses text input some users may find it may take a little time getting used to. There are plenty of how-tos available online however and it's still intuitive and easy to get the hang of. A four on ease of use.

Value... QS is free. And it has made my day extremely much more efficient. 5. Donate if you can, this is an awesome piece of software!

Stability:

QS by itself is very very stable. I have encountered some issues with a bluetooth plugin still in beta. But these issues are few and far between.

I would give QS a five for stability, and the bluetooth plugin a three or a two. As the plugin is beta however - and not installed as default - I will stick to giving QS a five for stability.

ERICOB  Well, confusingly, the release numbering system of Quicksilver may not follow "conventions."

The version I'm running identifies itself as "B54 (3815)."

I suspect that the "build number" is the correct number to be monitoring for changes.

FIENDINC  Don't lose hope just yet! The plugins were apparently taken down barely before Leopard was released, apparently due to speculation of security holes in certain plugins.

Since the release of leopard, after 3 days I successfully installed the 7 core plugins that QS normally offers to optionally install. The QS plugin framework is still out there, so if you have programming experience and have enjoyed the godly role this program gives over your computer, please help in any way you can

The first thing that needs to be done is to build an alternate plugin site....

KAPPABEAR  I love QS, and have been using it for quite a while. Unfortunately, I've recently learned that it doesn't play well with Leopard. During the initial installation, when you're prompted for which plugins you want to load, after selecting them and after selecting them, they don't install. QS plugin installer hangs right there, not doing anything. The program continues to run in the background, as you can click Continue, and it does, but you can't use any of the plugins. I also tried going into the plugin section of the program and trying to install them there, and encountered the same exact issue.

Hopefully this will be fixed, but I doubt it, as the program hasn't been updated in over a year. Ugh ... time to find a new Launcher.

CURIOUSVELOCITY  The only issues with Leopard is all builds prior to beta 52 (3813) will not be able to be removed from the Dock, so that command+tabs and closing apps will randomly bring QS into focus... which is annoying.

The hanging problem that you described is not a bug - the Quicksilver database is currently down www.blacktree.com, and the developer Alcor is working to bring it back online, presumably with the source code of QS since he promised that the app would go open-source come Leopard. Until the main server is back online, though, in-app updates and plug-in installation is offline.

J.AILEY  I have been using Quicksilver for quite some time. Currently I am using 1.0b51.

Quicksilver is one of those apps that I could not live without. After a fresh install of OSX, Quicksilver is the first app that I install on my Mac.

It makes navigating and using my Mac SO much easier. Running other programs with just a few keystrokes is awesome!

I haven't even began to unlock the full potential of Quicksilver. All the different modules you can load or not load makes this really great.

It is much faster for launching apps than Spotlight and it can be set up to feel as though it is part of the OS. No dock icon, no menubar icon. All you have to do is hit the keystroke, and there it is! Ready to serve.

Give Quicksilver a try, you won't want to use a mac without it again.

BLUEFISH  I love this app. That being said it appears that there is a well documented bug when using this version on intel macs.

One serious address book conflict or incompatibility... that manifests itself in a varity of different forms from losing all of your address book data to in my case I lose the ability to drop drag files in my finder and the quicksilver menu becomes corrupted (like the font is bad).

I hope that the developer is reading this list because it really is a great application... one that I have grown to rely on in a very short time.

MACGRUDER  This is an extraordinary piece of software. Beautiful free and fast. It has a slightly steep learning curve but give it time and you'll change the way you work.

For example,

You can select an image,

Resize it as a copy,

Rename it,

Choose a name of someone in your address book,

Attach it,

Mail it.

All in about 10 seconds (really 10 seconds) without leaving the keyboard.

Or my favourite:

Type a number, and it automatically can rate the present iTunes track to that number.

SIDETRACKED  Yes, it takes a few minutes of reading the instructions, and a few more minutes of experimenting to get the hang of it. And it gets easier the more you use it - both because you learn it's fine points, and it learns yours (like what abreviations you use for an app or file)

But before long it's all second nature, and fun to use. And this is coming from a cranky old guy who's far from a computer whiz.

I compared it with Butler (which I found less intuitive and more annoying) and Launch Bar (more limited and not free). Subjective reactions to be sure. Both are excellent in their own ways, but this was the one I stayed with.

For those who want a compromise - something simpler than Quicksilver to learn and use, but still free and fast at opening apps and documents, ABC Launch is quite good. A lot fewer bells, whisteles and options, but faster to become second nature.

But for me, I like the fun of the constant development and additions, and the fact that I'm always finding new ways to make Quicksilver work even better for me.

It's more stable than a lot of final releases, but it is constantly developing. There is discussion of what beta should mean in the QS forums. It looks like there's some features that have yet to be implimented, but what's there seems to work fine, and I've never been clear what the yet-to-be-added mystical features are.

You can decide in preferences whether you want just "stable releases," why those aren't final releases, I'm not really sure.

KENARONI  I'm using Quicksilver on an old 400mhz Mac G4, and it's plenty fast. Goes without saying it's *very* fast on my G5 at work. And it has crashed on me maybe twice in the last 6 months - usually when I'm trying to send it too many commands at once with my fast fingers.

If it's running slow for you, see if you cataloged to many huge directories, things like system folders. Just catalog the folders you normally use.

I've been using QS for a couple of years, but only lately am realizing all the things it can do. I've been learning a new feature every week that I never knew about before.

THOTH  Quicksilver is really an amazing application and is almost there in terms of implementation. But it has two flaws that are real deal-breakers. One, it's too crashy. Two, and more importantly, it's too slow. The slowness can sometimes be phenomenal, on a quad-core 2.5 GHz PPC with 8GB RAM. I don't care to find out what it'd be like on a slower machine.

Quicksilver has an open plug-in architecture, which is a great idea. But the documentation for these plug-ins is hard to find; I have never found it. Do I blame Quicksilver for the failures of the plug-ins? Well, partly, yes. An end-user perceives it all as one system, and it can be hard to figure out. The real way to figure out these issues is to visit the forums.

I like QS a lot, I think it has a great deal of potential, and one day I might switch back, for now I am using Butler. I find that app to be quite fast and efficient. It's only taking up 126 MB of RAM on my machine, whereas on my laptop, QS is using 262 -- and I expect that to go up over time.

Verdict: QS is a great program but it needs TLC with a view to fixing crashiness, speeding up the app greatly, and using system resources more gently, before it will be the top choice.

HAPLO  Although the occasional beta will crash and not come back till you update or revert, this is probably the single most useful application ever developed for OSX. As an application launcher, it's the fastest and most effective I've ever used on any platform. I used to use it to control iTunes (although that's only good if you actually know the artist/name of the song you want to listen to next) and it was great for that too. It's especially good for programs you use occasionally or even a lot, but don't want to put on the dock. It's really even faster than the dock, so I use it for things I put on the dock, too, on the occasion.

MACD  I used to use QuickSilver for a long time, ever since it has been out. But now I am completely switched to Butler. The reason? Well, Quicksilver is a gem in user interface area, but when you need a fast launcher, the word "fast" goes before "beautiful UI", and that's where Quicksilver still has to catch up with Butler. Both are.. fast, not that Quicksilver is slow, but Butler usually comes up with its window perceptually at least twice as fast, when Quicksilver starts scratching my hard disk looking for something, or reviving itself from swap, or.. I don't know.

I really wish Quicksilver would become fast (and no.. turning off all the visual bells&whistles doesn't help a bit), but not Butler is a way to go for me (although a bit cumbersome at configuration, and also not with as pretty interface as QS).

And restoring the old version won't help without also restoring the old prefs and maybe even the library/ app support/ qs folder, which I did. So be careful of this version.

VASILIS  well. It took me over an hour to repair things. My quickkeys work again, I had to remove them and make them again. It kept crashing if I tried to change the corrupt ones. (The action 'launch' has vanished and you have to replace it with 'open').

There is one more thing. It is very slow now. It takes over two minutes to launch. When adding a new quickkey it takes a long time to find the right app.

I hope this version is some kind of joke that has to do with halloween (don't know exactly what that is, we don't have that in Holland), and that there will be a new version soon.

To all developers: please stop making versions for hollidays. I earn my living with your software, my mac is no joke!

And this is while I'm typing in Safari which is at 13% ( I can see both windows on a Mac G4 Dual Processor running Tiger.

Well maybe it's not quieted down to 0.00, oh wait that's TrickSilver and I was seeing the activity for QuickSilver before. I'm waiting for the next update.

ANONYMOUS  You're comparing Apples and Oranges ;)

Both Spotlight and Quicksilver maintain an index/catalog of your files ... but that is where the similarlity ends. Spotlight is basically a smart (metadata) search, wheras Quicksilver is a way of rapidly performing actions on files (launch, open, move, copy, compress, email file, run shell/applescript etc etc), it goes much further then Launchbar or Butler in this regard. It has transformed the way I use my mac - can't recommend it highly enough!

ANONYMOUS  Quick Silver is an evolving system - supporting plugins, so you can say search though your bookmarks, contacts, display phone numbers in giant text etc all from the key board. Spot light is aimed at finding documents, or contents of documents. I think of quick silver as a way of pulling things out of the dock, that I may use often, but do not want to clutter the dock with.

It is very fast for basic search, ie Applications Folder. If you are looking for an application that will find documents, perhaps launcher or spotlight is better.

Very nice User Interface.

ANONYMOUS  Why Launchbar is better than Quicksilver, part 133:

Install Launchbar, activate it, type "tm". Launchbar finds and highlights TextMate, ready for launching.

Install Quicksilver, activate it, type "tm". Quicksilver finds the freaking HTMLRendering.framework from 10.1 that I haven't used in years, on another volume! TextMate may have been listed, but I wasn't about to scroll through all 155 matches looking for it. QS may get better with training, but I really can't be bothered if it's so stupid to begin with.

Worthless.

It's true that LB search algorithm is MUCH better, but obdev shouldn't sleep on their laurels. LB miss all the plug-in architecture of QS as well as all the text manipulation features and spotlight integration.

On the other side, QS should improve is search algorithm and maybe stop implementing new features for the time needed to make it more stable (I still have to delete the cache folder on a regular basis) and efficient (specially to find CamelCase words.)

But if LB is not better than QS, I won't pay for future upgrades.

THE VALRUS  What can you do with *anything* that a shell script can't accomplish? And yet: do you use shell scripts for everything?

That you would even consider using QS for something you'd otherwise need a shell script for indicates to me that QS is probably not for you. It's not for complex tasks, it's for doing fairly simple but potentially annoying and unnecessarily time-consuming things quickly, and for making it possible and easy to do normally mouse-intensive tasks quickly and easily using the keyboard.

I use it to control iTunes, launch apps, move files, and store the clipboard history, and I'm just touching the surface of what you can do with it. It takes a little effort to discover what you like it best for, but god it's cool.

If you don't like it, fine, but your argument was weak. I'll admit that the catalog's prioritization can be out of whack (although I don't have problems with it), but it's customizable all to hell so I'm sure it can be fixed.

And seriously. Shell scripts? Instead of Quicksilver? The fact that you think that's even remotely a legitimate comparison suggests to me that your review isn't based on a whole lot of knowledge about what QS is good for.

Spotlight lets you find where it is, QS lets you do stuff with it. If I wanted to find all the iChat transcripts that mention my friend's birthday, I'll use spotlight. However, if I want to launch iChat, I'll use Quicksilver. If I want to find a document that mentions the preparations for my friend's surprise party, I'll use Spotlight. PAUL  It is easy to see why people have their differences about this product because of its unusual nature. A first impression might be that it is obscure and not all that useful, but the reality is that it takes a little effort to get it configured and working in a way that is useful to the individual.

It could be an issue with the current version, but I could not understand why my documents were not being accessed, untill I looked in the preferences and found that only level 1 of my documents folder was cataloged and that it was not possible to change this. I'm assuming this is a bug because it makes not sense. To get around this, I added my documents, and my classic folder as a custom catalog and the program began to get a lot more useful to me.

So, if you are trying this application for the first time, give it chance. In collaboration with spotlight and a few other tools, it should make your life easier. Provided you can get it configured to your liking.

SCOTT FANNEN  Quicksilver is probably one of the most practical utilities for Mac OS X. When used to its best advantage (and it is far from obvious how to), you'll find yourself getting irritated when it takes more than a few keystrokes to find a friend, a file, a song, or a photo.

Spotlight doesn't replace this (Spotlight doesn't "learn" from your selections for a start) but is something that will augment it.

b40 and above try to use the new technologies introduced with Tiger and there may me a few teething problems (especially getting all the favourite plug-ins updated) but it still is great. It's also currently free so what's to complain about.

JAMIE KELLY  Best App Ever. Couldn't use a Mac without it.

To see what Tiger is gonna look like, install QS and then install the Flashlight Interface PlugIn... WOW!

Absolutely amazing, I'm gonna be donating to this developer.

TOM  Quicksilver is one of the most useful and innovative products for any platform. There are other launchers but none offer the flexibility and power of qs. Beta software has it's hiccups but it adds more value then headache.

I have turned a lot of my friends onto quicksilver and will continue to do so!

CAFFEINE  I like this app except i found 2 bugs in it.

1 - If I put my mac to sleep and is re-awakened, Quicksilver is no longer running. Its as if it quit while my mac was asleep.

2. It can't properly make apps run as root because when Quicksilver tries, the app just bounces for a seconds or 2 then goes away.

Those are the only 2 problems I have found so far.

BRNRDRGN  You can do almost anything in Quicksilver(run apps as root, set desktop pix, play tracks in iTunes, etc.). And it learns from your user habits to modify itself and be faster for you.

Why Dragthing is less than zero - too many open processes

Launchbar? Never heard of it.

And it's free. Are Lunchbar(sic) and Dragthing free?

ANONYMOUS  In many user interface studies they always find two pertinent facts:

• Test subjects consistently report that keyboarding is faster than mousing.

• The stopwatch consistently proves mousing is faster than keyboarding.

This contradiction between user-experience and reality apparently forms the basis for many user/developers’ belief that the keyboard is *always* faster, and Quicksilver (and LaunchBar for that matter) symbolize that phenomenon. Now, I gave Quicksilver (as well as LaunchBar) a serious try, and I found out that while they both worked okay as a quick search tool it wasn't even close to becoming a true "cure all" launcher as many advocates seem to claim these days.

The keyboard shortcut of any sort is useful and effective when the user can select with one hand on the keyboard and act with the other with the mouse. Two-handed input can result in solid productivity gains, but "Do-It-All-on-Keyboard" can be quite opposite of that, and I am afraid Quicksilver is a prime example.

I agree with the previous reviewer on QS being a bloatware. Quicksilver is trying to do way too much. Even used strictly as a quick search tool LaunchBar was still far better in guessing the right object for my abbreviation.

I would also like to note that, quite contrary to what some other reviewers mention, Tiger's Spotlight is NOT quite the same thing as Quicksilver or LaunchBar. Spotlight goes way beyond that, it is able to work with file contents beyond just metadata, while Quicksilver and LaunchBar mainly works with file names.

Overall, I was quite unimpressed, and as the previous reviewer say, I couldn't see what the big deal was about this software. There are other "Find file" type tools that are better than Quicksilver/LaunchBar, and it is simpler to just click on a dock icon than activating QS, type a few characters and scroll down the list of object.

GAK  While I generally agree with you, one issue: If you only use 4-5 apps, clicking on a Dock icon is faster. If you regularly use more than that, it helps to have something like LaunchBar or Butler (which concentrate on *launching* apps, rather than performing every possible action on every possible object)

SAMUEL RAE  The problem here is that the two "pertinent facts" are only facts for certain people. I thoroughly agree that many people can do things faster with a mouse than with the keyboard - I wouldn't recommend this for my Dad, for instance.

However, I peronsally find it much easier to use Quicksilver than my mouse, and can back that up by the stopwatch. I don't think you can have a blanket statement saying that Quicksilver is built on incorrect premises and is therefore not good software or not fast. I don't think you can go the other way, either, and say this is faster for everyone.

If it fits into how you work, then great. If it doesn't, then no harm done. There's no point making sweeping statements for or against its usability which are blatantly not true for everyone.

ANONYMOUS  It's nice to see a negative review that is reasoned and objective in its criticisms.

I have to add, however, that QS is great for my workflow and I found it to be a godsend.

Taking into consideration this person's review as opposed to my own experience, it seems that QS is simply the kind of application that is either going to blow you away or fall flat. Not much in between.

BIRCHMAN  This is an amazing product. it's a shame that when spotlight is released in tiger, the user base will dwindle. oh well...

anyways, this is the best launcher out there (launchbar can cram it). i think i speak for many people when i say this is the single best addition to OSX. i love this brilliant (free!) product.

ASMEURER  NO, Quicksilver will be better when Tiger comes out because of spotlight, i.e. Quicksilver will use spotlight to search better. Quicksilver does much more than spotlight can. Also, the final beta version of quicksilver will probably come out when tiger does (see interview from the link in my previous post).

RAWSWEETS  This is truly a awesome app.

I've used it to accidentally come across scores of files that I've long forgotten, by simply typing a few keys.

It's not the end all be all, because typing can take longer than clicking in a dock or dock-like app (I use dragthing), especially when what you're looking for is similarly named to other items - like "photoshop". In that case, you could type "pshop" and it will liekly list it first, but my point remains; two clicks or a hot-key can do it better.

And, although this app has hot-key support, so do many other apps and it's not unique in that regard. I personally like to bind launcher hot-keys within one app. Quicksilver is great for hot-keying actions, like "email file to tommy", etc.

All in all, I've had it for two weeks and don't use it so. I'm a web dev, and I'm either not doing much or am tired of figuring out which "index.html" file I'm working on - via QS's drop down lists.

What I look forward to with QS's development is the incorporation of Spotlight, or a faster cataloging method. I sometimes want to use QS to "action" files I've recently acquired, but these usually aren't cataloged immediately. I'd also like a module to handle selected items, like finder items or perhaps selected text - enabling QS as a kind of interactive services menu.

Well, it's a wonderful app with plenty good and more to come. Great work and highly recommended!

PRAGMAT  I've used Launchbar since what seems forever ago, and used to love it and DragThing too, OK, I still do, alas Quicksilver has replaced these and others to such a degree as for them to seem dim memories. I've not tried Butler and I probably won't because this, even should it become shareware (unlike many childish boobs out there I would not protest this) has to be the best of show. As for those of you claiming CPU overhead issues, You Are Completely Nuts! I've used it on an iMac500DVSE (1GB RAM) since initial release without outstanding issues or drag. Strictly speaking it is the pre/proto-Tiger WOW application.
