MKLJUN  XeTeX and TexMaker DO work together.

Texmaker -> Preferences

Under Commands use:

Latex: /usr/texbin/xelatex -output-driver=/usr/texbin/xdv2pdf %.tex

Under Quick Build use:

User: /usr/texbin/xelatex -output-driver=/usr/texbin/xdv2pdf %.tex|open %.pdf
(Version 1.7.1)

LONDONSKATER  This is a pretty good product. My biggest issue is that I am unable to configure it to output with xetex, which is essential on OS X to use the OS X fonts. It would be great to have as an option in the prefs. Currently I edit with TeXMaker and output with TeXShop.

FREDERICD  Compiling TeXmaker has become very easy with the latest version of Qt (>=4.2):

- Install Qt (grab qt-mac-opensource-*.dmg from ftp://ftp.trolltech.com/qt/source/ )

- decompress the TeXmaker distribution and launch qmake in a terminal:

tar jxvf texmaker-1.4.tar.bz2

cd texmaker-1.4

qmake-4.2

open texmaker.xcodeproj

- build the project in Xcode (select "release build"), and voilĂ , you have the application in the TeXmaker source dir, just copy it anywhere using the finder, and delete the sources.

Since the Qt libraries are shared, the resulting app is quite small (1.4M on Intel).

At first launch, don't forget to give the path to various TeX tools in the preferences (I'm using MacPorts, so I had to change everything to /opt/local).

MBOISSON  A little bit hard to install on MacIntel. I had first to compile Qt 4.1.3 (with 4.1.0, TexMaker crashed at start). Then, I had to compile TexMaker, because the pre-compiled didn't find the Qt directory and I found no way of telling it where it was.

But I think it worth it. Way better than texshop. A lot of keyboard shortcuts, wizards to make tables and matrices and so on.

DADA1958  I like TeXShop a lot, I really missed it on my Ubuntu PC until I stumbled on TeXMaker 1.3 last Friday. I had problems with an earlier version so I sticked to Gedit for awhile.

I'm going to like this app, it runs smoothly on my Mac as well, the interface is great on both platforms.

The possibility of adding more than 10 user tags and integration with aspell would make TeXMaker even better.

I gave stability a 3 because it's too early to give a higher rating though it didn't crash on Linux yet.

Kudos for the developer!

HOTFREAKS  I really hate QT apps. I think I will stick with LaTeX-it for now; it integrates much better into other Mac apps.

J MICHAEL PINC  I've been fiddling with quite a few latex editors in the past few months (Grad school teachers are so demanding) and I have to say I like the layout of this one. If you could add Mac spelling check capacity with it, it would be perfect! I'd definitely recomend it.

PATANISCA  Perhaps the best tool of the genre for Mac OS X. Easy to use and more intuitive.

Two notes for users:

I did have to change the pdflatex config to its absolute path (got latex via Fink).

When doing a Save As, make sure you include the sufix (.tex or whatever), because the program doesn't seem to do it automatically and will later fail at compile time with no explicit warning.

Otherwise, great app!

ANONYMOUS  What's the improvement from TeXShop and iTeXMac? TeXShop is fast, iTeXmac is slower but has more features. Why bother to use TeXMaker?

LARS KELLOGG-STEDMAN  I don't like packages that copy stuff into /usr/lib uneccessarily. What if I have existing qt libraries I don't want texmaker to trample upon?

While I'm not all that familiar with the intricacies of MacOS X application development, I believe it is possible to package the necessary libraries into the application, so that they're part of the .app directory, rather than littering the filesystem as in the current install script.

ALEX  Having problems with viewing the typeset docs.

Under Quick Build (presumably, after the typesetting) get Error: Could not start the command. I guess this is because Preview is not specified as a helper application. But the only instructions found in the Readme file are these:

"For maximal usability & comfort, the Unix roots of TeXMaker require to run the program from the shell. This allows to run the helper apps smoothly.

(For the assignment of helper apps you have to enter the full path into the the MacOSX bundle, e.g. /Applications/Preview.app/Contents/MacOS/Preview to assign Preview as the PDF-previewer application from within TeXMaker.)"

What exactly am I supposed to do? -- AM
