DEBBIEZ Seeing as iEatbrainz is nearly dead I can recommend some alternatives. Musicbrainz Picard now works on OSX though not very Mac like, better is Jaikoz - this isnt free but it does donate 10% of sale to musicbrainz. (Version 1.08)

JBTULE I am not dead, I did not die a few years ago, i graduated from college a few years ago, thus lost my copious free time, iEatBrainz was always on my back burner. And while the trunk of public repository did compile as a universal binary, I never released it, because it didn't really matter as MusicBrainz is going to shut down the TRM server in the near future (as in Feb 2008 last announced). I don't have time or interest to port iEatBrainz to MusicIP, but I do have interest is other people doing it, or helping work on other parts of iEatBrainz if there is some other developer interested in doing the port. So beware it may stop working in the near future. (Version 1.08)

MORTIMERPA Note that macupdate points to 6v8.gamboni.org where I provide a universal build of iEatBrainz. However I am not taking over the development of this project and won't have time to offer support. I didn't even know Jay Tuley had passed away. I just took the sources freely available from the SourceForge project and tweaked the XCode project to get it to build for me and thought it would be nice for others to distribute it. Sadly, it's not that I won't like to, but I have no knowledge or time to look into how all this was coded by Jay Tuley. (Version 1.08)

DXH I would really like to see this rebuilt as a intel compatible binary. Rosetta is working awfully hard to keep up with all the stuff this program does, and its killer on all my systems. WARNING: Don't try to use more than 500 or so songs in your working list at once, you will pay for it in huge slowdowns. Keep the working list small and this program will run at least something close to acceptable speeds. (Version 1.07)

ZWS This is one of those rare programs that really makes a difference in a small but active way. Whenever I have a large mass of songs that requires tags, since '96 I have had to tag them by hand. BENGARLAND I keep getting an error... something like "Cannot communicate with server" (I don't know the exact message because I'm not at my Mac right now). It works with some songs, and then it will give me an error for the next few songs since it can't (?) communicate with the server, then maybe one song will work, and the cycle repeats. It is also very slow on a per song basis, but maybe this is because it's having trouble getting a response. However the songs are all from the same album, and there is nothing else using my internet connection, and I tried it at 8am EST (not peak net time). Why is it not working??? Is there a similar app that works from the command line? (Version 1.07)

M_SPITZ Amazing program! Effectively finds multiple song information on unclear matches and lets you choose. Very fast and easy to use and infinitly better and freer then idtunes. Two things that can be improved: 1) Align the text fields in window 2) Make foreign songs with different characters work (wishful thinking I know) It has all features that it says it and then some. Very easy to use and it gives every you would expect from paid program except its free. Also a very stable program, took it for a test run and added and then deleted 400 songs while checking another 100 songs and it ran a bit slow but got the job done. If you have 6000 songs like me with missing names, artists and albums then this program is a saviour. This kind of program is so good it should be included with iTunes :) Thanks James Tuley for a truly great program P.S. I know there are a lot of reviews about the album art issue but if you guys read the developers site then you'd understand why it hasn;t happened why not visit it and check it out? (Version 1.07)

PUZZLED I don't think you understand how the MuscBrainz database works. It's not really possible for this to get the correct title but wrong artist. Everything's right or wrong because they're linked in the database. If it retrieves a title but says it's by someone other than the person you know it's by, it just plain can't locate the song in the database. It may be there but you have to go to the website, look it up, and manually match it. (Version 1.07)

FRANCKY Tritag can fetch infos for a COMPLETE copy of a cd in iTunes. What i mean is that it won't give you any info about one song, but if you have a full album in MP3 format it will fetch the infos from freedb.org and name the songs... Well try it and you'll see how it works. The integration with itunes is far for being as good as iEatBrainz but with those two tools you are about sure to get the name of a song. (Version 1.06)

I started to set about 550 titles to the task list (uncomplete tags), then wanted add all the rest of my titles (almost 4000) (maybe some tags are complete but incorrect). Its eating my brain: I am forced to first complete the first tasklist (time consuming, but thats OK, lots of analysis and web interrogation necessary I assume). No stop-working-on-task-list possible. Even quitting the app means auto-resume. No good. So be careful in your choise of tracks. Afterwards all seems to be working fine. All available stars instead... Its a software, I dreamed of. JAY TULEY You can add info through the MusicBrainz website, and you can added fingerprints with iEatBrainz. You have to enter in your musicbrainz log-in into iEatBrainz preferences before these features become available. MusicBrainz problem is not that it's missing obscure songs, it's that it's missing fingerprints, 50% of the songs in the database don't have fingerprints, thus the search again by tag info typically finds a match if your information is pretty close. If you match by that search, the fingerprint is added to the musicbrainz database, thus helping the missing fingerprints. Version 1.04 which is close to being ready, however might be delayed due me going to WWDC, will have a way to manually match songs by browsing through the MusicBrainz website. (Version 1.0.3)

ANONYMOUS When this works it's great (albiet a tad slow) However there are some logistical flaws. The interface could be a little better. This should be an iTunes plug-in actually. But I had a known CD that was ripped, and tagless. Entering it's tracks into this it couldn't identify two tracks, correctly identified four but from a "Live" cd version which this wasn't but the rest were corrected ID'd and tagged. I put this in the "use occasionaly for those few mystery tracks" and most definatly into the "wait and watch" to see if it improves catagory. Just please don't let people upload samples into the database from this. That would just pooch the DB even further. (Version 1.0.3)

I've tried other fixes - like MP3Rage - but never got any decent results. It's also extremely fast - took very little time per song on my 500 MHz iBook. And, one of the coolest feateres - if an MP3 does "crash" the application, you restart it and it picks right back up where it left off, actually asking whether to continue with the MP3 that crashed the app. Big thanks to the developer. You do need to check for wrongly matched songs, but if you choose leave unmatched, it shouldn't update iTunes with anything. ANONYMOUS Great idea, glad someone snagged the API to work with for OSX. BUT, did five batches of songs, of about varying sizes (got larger the more confident I was). Three were flawless, the fourth had every song renamed one off (so the playing song is actually named for the one beneath it) and the fifth was pretty randomly renaming songs. It renamed songs not even in the list. So, while I was initially pretty hacked that I had to rename these songs, it's beta, it's free, it's a good idea being worked on. Keep it to small batches, maybe one Artist at a time, and don't blame the developer for any of the results you get, it's not his database. And for pete's sake, can we get a new icon for 1.0?
