APEMAN  Thanks to LeLe and Ron Bell for their help with the huge font trouble that was making GIMP 2.6.7 unusable.

They advised me to go to /Library/Application Support/Gimp and open gtkrc and change the last line from Lucinda Grande 936 to Lucinda Grande 12.

I restarted GIMP and everything works fine now.

Thank you Thank you Thank you.

And I thank the GIMP community for their hard work.

APEMAN  Hold off downloading 2.6.7 or just move 2.6.6. 2.6.7 took over my screen. There were no menus, and the placeholder window was enormous. I couldn't resize it. It has white text on it but was so large I couldn't figure out what it was. It brought my Mini to a halt.

I am running it on a 2gig Intel Mini 1gig RAM.

10.5.8

Now I don't have GIMP installed.

Oh well. Will download when this issue is addressed.

RON BELL  LELE is right. Quit GIMP then edit "Library/Application Support/Gimp/gtkrc" in your home directory and change "gtk-font-name" to something like Lucida Grande 12, instead of 936. Then relaunch GIMP.

BIGDAVE56  I really like the GIMP, and applaud the developer for supporting us PPC dinosaurs. However, 2.6.5 continues a bug that was introduced in 2.6.4- some menu items and hover balloons inexplicably appear in Spanish. I have enough Spanish savvy to guess what's what for the most part, but this is really kind of annoying.

To install Gimp simply drop it to your Application folder.

X11 2.3.2 or higher recommended

To use this build of Gimp 2.6.4, it is recommend that you use X11 version 2.3.2 or higher. This version has many advantages over the previous ones. Most of all it will

* support graphic tablets

* support better font sizes / display resolution (96 dpi)

Please download X11 from

NEONBLUE2  XQuartz is a lot better than the broken mess that shipped with Leopard. Try it out and if you don't like it then just reapply the latest Mac OS X update. Technically Apple have been updating X11 allow with the system, it's just that they don't keep up with every release.

Now if you want a native Gimp, have you checked the link under "Related Links"?

BIGDAVE56  Like GIMP a lot. Maybe it is not as full-on powerful as Photoshop, but then, most users probably don't even use most of the power Elements has. On my 1.2 GHz G4 w/1.2 GB of RAM it runs as fast as Pshop CS2 or Pixelmator. The nomenclature is a little different than Adobe but if you are familiar with other image editors you'll figure it out. Download the Applescript 'Turn On X11 focus follows mouse' for enhanced usability. There is also one called (IIRC) 'X11 96dpi' which makes the menu fonts look the same size as OSX apps.

Only big item on my feature want list is 16-bit color depth support. Not aware of any editors that do that that don't cost $600.

I also applaud lisanet.de for not pulling support for us PPC hangers-on. This version is the basis of this review. Nicely done and good stability too.

HOFMAN  The question is not "which version", but rather "which app". There are AFAIK 4 different mac apps for Gimp with varying characteristics in integration in the Mac OS. The one at http://gimp-app.sourceforge.net has an experimental version that is the only native version I know of. But I have never tested it.

And FWIW, I'm not the only person that had this running without X11. Read ALL of the comments.

ANDY HEWITT  I find the versions from Wilbur Loves... are OK.

http://darwingimp.sourceforge.net/

These are only released from stable versions of Gimp. My experience has been that native apps seem to run better for me, whether they be ported to Aqua, or have to be used in X11.

Apart from that, Gimp is a great application at a very good price, but don't compare it to Photoshop. Remember, there's no such thing as a free lunch! Put these free apps into context, and use them if they suit your needs, otherwise you need to pay for the commercial stuff.

IINDIGO  Gimp disappoints me. It really does have a lot of potential, but unfortunately due to its X11-based GUI, it's unintuitive and incredibly ugly - the best way of describing it is that someone tied Gimp to the back of the ugly truck with an ugly rope and dragged it ugly street for 10 ugly miles.

Being an open source project isn't enough of an excuse for it being that way. The likes of Firefox, Camino, and Adium have proven that quite well.

X11 shouldn't affect your current windowing system (bveyond taking up a few megs of disk storage) at all, once you quit X11.app. All it does is run a Xserver.

JCTULL  I would agree with the previous reply comments. Additionally, there is no reason why your system would be slow because of X11 unless you were running a cpu or vide-intensive X11 app and your machine is underpowered (or short on RAM, etc.).

Xfree86 is a very low overhead windowing environment. My guess is you had something fairly messed up that happened to co-occur with your X11 experience. Based on your comments, it is clear that there is plenty of room for error and misconception.

DP-G4-450GUY  You must also realize that X11 is a part of OS X - "universal" has to do with being both PPC and Intel hardware-based Macintoshes, not excluding X11.

X11 brings a whole range of 'nix based software to the Mac and should be embraced warmly.

NO ONE ..... is going to re-write GIMP as a Cocoa application. GIMP is open-sourced and HUGE. It would be a massive endeavor to re-write it from the ground up. And I would estimate that without funding . . .

PIAKO  good. better than forking out $$$ for ps. had to wait like hours to get past the caching fonts bar. once that was done it loads fine. there seems to be a problem with the marquee on select none. i get this odd yellow marquee permanent ghosting around images. i wish select none worked properly. other than that flatten images works, opacity works, layers work, the palletts peel off but can't reseat pallet once unseated from main 'everything' pallett. the program does NOT work with extended desktop. the images will only span one display worth of pixels. this is an anchor point problem like with itunes. notice that your itunes window will not span the entire display like a safari browser window will. i was hoping an update in 10.4.4 for better dual monitor support. none. great app besides that. fast!!!!

ANONYMOUS  If you need an above average image manipulation program, Gimp makes more sense than blowing money on Photoshop or Photoshop Elements. I'm not saying it is a professional replacement for Photoshop, but for most users, it's more than adequate.

BSF  Apparently this recent update is for Tiger only(?), even though the requirements state "Mac OS X10.3 or higher". If Panther users have downloaded 2.2.8 (and tried to launch it after foolishly deleting 2.2.6 as I did) click on" More Information" to download 2.2.6.

This world seems to be obsessed with knee jerk criticism. GIMP is a great app.! Very powerful and worth every penny you pay for it. Comparing an app. that is FREE to one you would pay $500+ is a little unfair.

AMBERV  1-bad interface

2-a software copying photoshop has no chance

3-at least make it non-X11 (is it planned?) (9/18/2005, Version: 2.2.8)

1-Subjective, and highly variable based on prior experience with other interfaces. Gimp's interface "makes sense" and is extremely efficient when used in the correct windowing systems, with one skilled in *NIX philosophy. All others who are used to hand-held OSes are going to feel alien in such an environment. Be rest assured, *NIX based people think your OS has a horrible interface, too.

2-GPL doesn't need a "chance," it merely exists by virtue of its demand. There is a lot of demand for something that is "like" photoshop, but does not cost. That said, they have important strengths and weaknesses. In fact, I use both.

3-That's arrogant of you. It wasn't even written for your OS at all. You OS did not even exist when it started up. It's open source, why don't -you- write a non X11 version.

ANONYMOUS  I don't think he is expecting too much at all. Until X11 apps are able to inherent all (or most) of the normal Aqua interface behaviors and can use normal Mac keyboard shortcuts (like command-z instead of control-z), they'll always be alien to most Mac users.

It's one thing for X11 apps to *look* different, but it becomes a much more problematic and confusing matter when they *act* differently than all other normal Mac apps.

SON_OF_HORUS  1. Gimp likes lots of 'real' memory. If you've got it, let Gimp flaunt it.

2.The number of possible combinations of effects must be huge. Just experimenting with them requires patience. If you ain't got time, use something simpler. Photoshop Elements 3.0, perhaps.

3. As the existence of GimpShop 0.2b shows, a more PS-like interface and behavior would allow PS users to flatten the learning curve.

4. Just one nit -- I do missing having a neutral tool like 'arrow' in PS. If there is one, could you let me know where?

BUD  I have used 2.0 for a long time (and 1.x on Linux before that)...i have to say for Mac OS X, the 2.2 version has SO many improvements its amazing...

This comes to mind:

- No longer have to click twice to activate documents and the toolboxes (meaning its consistent with the rest of OS X)

- The new open dialog is just amazing

- Previews finally work right in the open dialog

- There is a "Sidebar" in the open dialog, much like the one in Finder - makes for MUCH easier browsing

- Rounded rectangles are now easy to make!

- A new Open as layer... menu...

etcetc...

And i have just been using this new version for less than 30 minutes! :)

I always liked Gimp better than Photoshop, and now that all the little annoyances are gone...itt keeps getting better...10/10

DPG4450GUY  EXCELLENT! And what a whopping improvement in features over v2.0.6.

Here's what GIMP.ORG states they updated for GIMP 2.2 - no doubt all are incorporated in Aaron's binary for OS X:

2.1. New in GIMP 2.2

Here is a brief summary of some of the most important new features introduced in GIMP 2.2. There are many other smaller changes that long-time users will notice and appreciate (or complain about!). There are also important changes at the level of plugin programming and script-fu creating that are not covered here.

Interoperability and standards support

You can drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste image data from the GIMP to any application which support image/png drops (currently Abiword is the only one we know of) and image/xml+svg drops (Inkscape supports this one). So you can copy-and-paste curves into the GIMP from Inkscape, and then drag a selection into Abiword to include it inline in your document.

Patterns can now be any GtkPixbuf supported format, including png, jpeg, xbm and others.

GIMP can load gradients from SVG files, and palettes from ACT and RIFF files.

Drag-and-drop support has been extended. You can now drop file and URIs onto an image window, where they will be opened in the existing image as new layers.

Shortcut editor

You can now edit your shortcuts in a dedicated dialog, as well as continue to use the little-known dynamic shortcuts feature (which has been there since 1.2).

Plug-in previews

We have provided a standard preview widget for plug-in authors which greatly reduces the amount of code required to support previews. David Odin has integrated this widget into all the current filters, so that now many more filters in the GIMP include a preview which updates in real time, and the various previews behave much more consistently.

Real-time previews of transform operations

The transform tools (shear, scale, perspective and rotate) can now show a real-time preview of the result of the operation when the tool is in "Traditional" mode. Previously, only a transforming grid was shown.

GNOME Human Interface Guide conformance

A lot of work has been done on making the GIMP's interface simpler and more usable for newcomers. Most dialogs now follows the GNOME HIG to the best of our knowledge. In addition, dialogs have separated out or removed many "Advanced" options, and replaced them with sane defaults or hidden them in an expander.

GTK+ 2.4 migration

•

Menus use the GtkUIManager to generate menu structure dynamically from XML data files.

•

A completely revamped File Chooser is used everywhere in the GIMP for opening or saving files. The best thing about it is that it lets you create a set of "bookmarks", making it possible to navigate quickly and easily to commonly used directories.

•

GIMP now Supports fancy ARGB cursors when they are available on the system.

Basic vector support

Using the GFig plug-in, the GIMP now supports the basic functionality of vector layers. The GFig plug-in supports a number of vector graphics features such as gradient fills, Bezier curves and curve stroking. It is also the easiest way to create regular or irregular polygons in the GIMP. In the GIMP 2.2, you can create GFig layers, and re-edit these layers in GFig afterwards. This level of vector support is still quite primitive, however, in comparison to dedicated vector-graphics programs such as Inkscape.

Also . . .

There are many other smaller user-visible features. A rapid-fire list of some of those features is below.

•

It is now possible to run the GIMP in batch mode without an X server.

•

We have a GIMP binary (gimp-console) which is not linked to GTK+ at all.

•

Improved interface for extended input devices

•

Editable toolbox: You can now decide which tools should be shown in the Toolbox, and their order. In particular, you can add any or all of the Color Tools to the Toolbox if you wish to.

•

Histogram overlays R, G and B histograms on the Value histogram, and calculates the histogram only for the contents of the selection.

•

Shortcuts are now shared across all GIMP windows.

The GNU Image Manipulation Program Version 2.2

----------------------------------------------

This is the stable branch of GIMP 2.2. Only bug-fixes are applied

here. New features are being added in the HEAD branch that will lead

into GIMP version 2.4.

Bugs fixed in GIMP 2.2.1

========================

- added python logo to EXTRA_DIST so it shows up in the tarball (bug #)

- fixed mempory corruption in FracalExplorer plug-in (bug #161729)

- fixed crash in gradient editor (bug #161411)

- fixed crash in unsharp mask plug-in preview code (bug #157910)

RICH  Good point!

"GIMP" stands for the "GNU Image Manipulation Package". It is a Photoshop-a-like application, with a scriptable plugin interface. In some areas it's better than Photoshop, notably it's scriptable plugin interface and the colour palette you can leave open while you paint. But it lacks a few features too: if you work in print, you won't want to use Gimp, because it doesn't do CMYK -- only RGBA. It also doesn't do such a good job with text.

Advantages are fairly obvious: it's free, and it's open source. Enjoy!

ANONYMOUS  Good where it is good, but some of it's file handlers are poor:

it's basic Photoshop I/O needs major work. Failed to open any PSD created in Photoshop 7 (Gimp's PSD handler crashes according to Console), and it cannot write out a usable PSD either (reports error then writes out garbage file)

PSD file format is completely screwed up in Gimp

No IFF file format built in (vital for 3d work Maya/Lightwave etc) . Some reference to IFF on Gimps plug in web page but no clue or mention about how to install on a Mac.

TGA format seems to mysteriously loose alpha channels.

Annoying Bezier tools. Can't move a path node in 'Edit' mode. Must be in 'Design' mode. Silly

Terrible documention for such a complex app, full of broken links, missing chunks (where is file fomat section for instance) and 'coming soon' references.

slow interface

Well that's the bad, still overall good but still flakey in places...

MIXEL  Some people have complained about it being slow.. I'm only on an 800mhz G4 and it's fast here, not markedly slower than Photoshop..

The only thing stopping this from being one of my most used apps is Wacom pressure support in X11 - I know it's not a problem in gimp itself, but until tablets work it's really not that much use as an alternative, to a lot of people. :/ A shame..

I assume someone's working on getting tablets to work in X11? i hope so..! Maybe someone's managed to get the linux drivers to work on osX?

DPG4450GUY  Runs just awesome - no issues whatsoever.

If you are having troubles with GIMP-app,

make sure you have totally deleted the previous version and the gimp-2 folder in your home folder - the easiest way to ensure this is to "add" System to your Finders Find table and do a search on gimp . The application runs great on a properly configured and maintained Panther install - so if you are having troubles, it is wity YOU, not the application.

RICH  It's a bit harsh to say the problem is "with you" if an X11 app doesn't run properly. Gimp, X11 and OSX are all very complex systems, and if for some reason one of those components goes weird, it can prevent applications from running.

But it's generally true that even a lazily maintained system, without specialist Unix knowledge, can run some form of X11 and Gimp happily.

ANONYMOUS  I could'a sworn there was a version 2.0.5 previously... Anyway, for those of you experiencing having to click any tool twice to activate it, fire up the terminal and issue the following command:

"defaults write com.apple.x11 wm_click_through -bool true"

Everything between the quotes should be entered as a single line (in case this review post broke what I entered into multiple lines...)

It applies to apps running on Apple's X11 window manager only (quartz-wm?). I do not know of other X11 apps that might have difficulties with this preference change.

Also, I too am plagued by crashes during scroll of the font list. As I upgraded, I will try trashing the .gimp-2 stuff in my home folder and see if it doesn't do better on the subsequent launch...

ANONYMOUS  Yes excellent. Always wanted to try the Gimp and wasn't dissapointed.

Only gripe and the reason I don't throw out Photoshop just yet is Gimp's current reliance on X11.

Gimp, like other X11 apps such as OO is blnking SLOW, I'm guessing this is to do with X window emulation and hopefully not bloated layers of code. It seems slow in both the window redraw and in it's filters. However you can't complain it is a nice app, just really needs a solid Aqua version and some better filter previews.

RICHIE  I've been using Gimp since it was released - was it 1999 or 2000? And when I got my hands on MacOSX, I needed it ASAP. OroborOSX and fink made life easy for me, but less techy friends couldn't be bothered with it. Now, with Apple's X11 and Aaron's binary distribution of Gimp 2, we have a simple solution.

I love the way Gimp's UI doesn't force you to work a certain way, unlike Photoshop (I like to zoom to different levels when I'm cropping, for example). I also love the extensible architecture - script-fu is amazing, if a little hard to use sometimes, but still far easier than Photoshop's plugin SDK!

Gimp doesn't have everything: live previewing is only available with some filters; no life-saver "variations" tool; ultra-basic text, etc. I've also, since version 2.0, had a couple of inexplicable crashes. But its handling of layers, GIFs, and overall workflow speed are what get it lauched far more frequently than Photoshop.

ICHABODVIC  This latest version of GIMP looks great! It is the most "aqua-like" version of GIMP so far. I've used GIMP under X11 since version 1.2.1 and can not get over the fact that it's a FREE application that supports "layering" like Photoshop. Also, this version of GIMP renders faster than previous versions, particularly when it comes to using the Artistic>GIMPressionist filters. Finally, there is no longer a need for a 2 button mouse, as there is now a full menu bar displayed at the top of each image file window.

For those experiencing problems with placing the gimp.app in other folders beside the Applications folder, please check out the README.txt file. My gimp.app is located in Applications>Graphics; it took a while for it to load the first time I launched it, but that was because it was "caching my fonts". (iMac G4 800MHz, 768MB RAM, 10.3.3)

Gimp has a proper UI, unlike Photoshop, which forces you to stick with one level of zoom until you've cropped, by golly; or forces you to paint in one color, because you can't leave the palette window open.

DAVID ALAN HJELLE  My understanding is also limited, but I can maybe help a bit. Basically, almost any software created today uses a code library to create it's user interface. This library is a bunch of code that puts all of the code to, say, make a button, in one place.

The problem with the GIMP is that it uses a *nix-native (Unix and Linux) library called GTK. GTK, at this point, only knows how to work with X11. To make GIMP be OS X-native, in the sense I think you mean, someone would have to convert all of the places where it uses GTK and convert them to work with Cocoa, Apple's library. That's just a huge pain, especially when you realize that there aren't always the same things offered in each library.

I did see one project that started to do this, but it might have folded, as I wasn't able tosee anythign about it on MacUpdate.

How that helps.

ANONYMOUS  Yeah, there were two projects I'm aware of that were attempting to make GTK+ native to Quartz. I haven't seen any progress on either in about a year :-( They didn't pool their efforts because one was about GTK+ for Cocoa, and the other was GTK+ for Carbon. I can't remember all the details, but one of those meant you could only write native MacOSX applications - making the job of porting an application harder! The other could be used with pretty much any GTK+ source code.

GTK+ is required by Gimp (GTK stands for "Gimp Took Kit"), so doing away with that is not an option: it's used for drawing the user interface and dealing with events (clicking and so on). So, the only bit you can replace is the X11 bit . . . but why do that when X11 is native to OSX now? It's pretty darned quick.

And you're right: making GTK+ native to Quartz means hooking in all the bits that currently talk to X11, into Quartz functions. That's a big job, and very likely the reason the projects aren't coming along.

ANONYMOUS  Sourceforge's mirror system takes a while to actually push the updates to their mirrors... the only realistic way to fix that is to not announce updates until the mirrors get the file, but that's never going to happen.

Work around it - try a different mirror. One's bound to have it.

JEREMY  Terrifically powerful. If you can get used to the hideous Windows interface, it's well worth using. Spend an hour or two burrowing around in the menus, and you'll find it's even more powerful than you first thought.

The only thing I miss is having a live preview of filter and script effects before they're applied (maybe that's in there somewhere).

Oh, and I read somewhere that you need a three-button mouse. Not so. X11 preferences lets you choose three-button emulation.

"I have a self contained application bundle for the gimp on os x... It seems like it would be useful for the greater gimp using community as the current method of getting the gimp on mac is to pay money to the macgimp project or spend three hours compiling with the fink."

SCOTTM  To all the whiners out there, GPL != Free (as in beer), deal with it.

First, I do not endorse Open OSX's repackaging and exorbitant prices. Methinks they charge WAY too much for providing compiled binaries for folks who do not want to compile the freely available sources.

Please read the GPL before posting. You are permitted by the GPL to charge for distribution of GPL-ed software. Also, if you ask Open OSX to provide the GIMP (or BOCHS, et cetera) sources the MUST do so, or they are in violation of the GPL.

ANONYMOUS  Thanks for the info there. I guess since a lot of these License Agreements are written in legalese (or whatever you call it), it's a bit hard to digest unless we had a basic knowledge of how the law works and license agreements function in regards to the developer and the end-user.

What I don't get is the difference between Free Beer and Free Speech ... but that's another thread all together. You don't need to answer that if you don't want to. I can always Google it up whenever I get the chance.

Again, thanks for the clarification there.

SCOTTM  My interpretation of the speech/beer freedoms; please correct any mistakes.

As an American (save your flames -- I'm not too proud of the current administration either), I have the right to say what I want, provided it does not directly harm another (slander or libel), this is freedom of speech.

The GPL allows me to distribute my original or derivative works (binary and source code), with proper attribution to the copyright holder, to anyone, for a fee if I choose to do so.

If I go to a party, I may be charged a certain amount at the door, but am allowed to drink as much as I want 'till I pass out. :-) That's freedom in the beer sense.

The GPL allows me to charge for redistribution, but I must always make my original or derivative works available under the GPL.

So, by inheritance this means that Open OSX is honoring the GPL, at least on the surface. I have not been able to find how to download their derivative works (source) and haven't asked them for their source.

HTH.

ANONYMOUS  That's what I'm thinking too ... I mean, if the program is GPL'ed, then chances are that the file is free, right? Unless there's some proprietary OpenOSX code in there that they don't plan on releasing to the open source community ... but I guess that might be a different ball game there.

Someone enlighten me here in regards to why this program released under the GNU Public License has to be purchased... I feel a little ignorant in this GPL stuff except almost all the GPL'ed apps I have downloaded were free and open source.

ANONYMOUS  Actually, I read a comment (supposedly from the maintainer of Gimp.app) on another site, dated sometime this morning (3/31/04), that the problem was apparently that the page had direct links to the SourceForge download site, and excessive traffic caused the files to be removed/restricted/whatever.

I'm not sure how everything was rerouted to OpenOSX, though.

The post is somewhere within the comments for the article, "Self Contained Gimp."

It does sound truthful to me, though, if only because SourceForge downloads usually require you to select a mirror from which to download, and when I downloaded the 2.0 Gimp.app image the other day, it seemed to be a direct download.

ANONYMOUS  Thanks Alex for the URL. Gimp 2 is just great. Gimp 1.2 was already very good, but here, with the new interface, it's just so much better. ;=)

Still, some users may say that it lacks the possibility to switvh to CMYK color mode.

Along with a morphing utility, that would make Gimp superior to Photoshop.

ANONYMOUS  GIMP for Mac OS X

i am in two ways about this....

i love the fact that it's very easy installation, but I'm still waiting for a native port.....you know? one that doesn't require X11, but runs native on the system.

either way, its just another step in the right direction :)

the startup time for the app is quite long, so unfortunatly Photoshop CS will still be my primary graphics app, but it's good to keep an old friend installed

JEFF  For me, it starts up slower than Photoshop does, but it makes up for it in price, ease of use, and capabilities (did I mention price?).

GIMP 2.0 is a huge improvement over 1.2, you won't regret using it. The GUI was re-done, and is much better.

For many, the GIMP is their primary application, and it should be. Not everyone needs every single capability Photoshop has in its bag of tricks, and even if they did, the GIMP most likely has the same tricks up its sleeve. (it's just that people don't realize it). For those who do simple graphics work, for websites, the GIMP is more than enough.

Probably the sleeper app of Open Source, the GIMP doesn't get its proper respect. It's great and under appreciated. The same goes for the X11 implementation on your Apple. Put both of those together, and you have one amazing capability. All for a low cost.

ANONYMOUS  The author notes in the documents that the app is untested in 10.2.X but it should work. It does not. Running the application causes X11 to start up and then nothing. Attempting to run the gimp binary directly from the terminal gives an error message about missing libraries.

Sadly, it's back to 1.2.X under Fink for Jaguar users.

ANONYMOUS  Absolutely fantastic. Easy drag n drop installation, too! Don't waste time or money with other GIMP packages; it doesn't get any easier than this.

Lots of useful features, sometimes all I need is GIMP and I can save the launch time of Photoshop. For pre-press work, you need PS, but for simple RGB image color correction, cropping, resizing, etc. it's great.

Nice work!
