DANA SUTTON I. m. h. o. this latest release (v. 4.1.1) is a bad idea. The previous release was 64-bit, this one reverts to 32-bit because of difficulties of running it with Leopard. That penalizes those of us who do run Snow Leopard on 64-bit capable Macs. Wouldn't it be fairer for the developer to release two separate versions for these two clienteles? (Version 4.1.1)

No, there is no measurable penalty for small 32-bit apps on Snow Leopard. The opposite is true sometimes, 64 bit apps require more RAM. E.g. all pointers require 8 bytes of memory instead of 4. Nobody demands a 64-bit iTunes. It just works. Dirk Theisen for Objectpark Software (Version 4.1.1)

BERTOBOX while an icon might suffice for some, this app, which has integrated beautifully with iCal for many years, is a godsend for those of us who need a stable quick access to any of our calendars on iCal, be they Google-synched or MobileMe-synched, Menu Cal performs a fantastic job. Hardly obtrusive and most-always very stable, I'm more than willing to be a bit forgiving when an upgrade goes slightly bad and one has to revert to a previous version for a short while. I've used this app for several years and have never regretted purchasing it. (Version 4.1.1)

DRUMCAT A stupid date icon isn't worth this much hassle. Maybe others use it for more, but with the changes you've made, I've just switched to iStatPro's icon. Bummer, dude. You really should just sell a $1 prog that does several different date icons for the status bar. You would probably outsell your other buggy product. (Version 4.1.1)

OBJECTPARK SOFTWARE With our first 64bit version of MenuCalendarClock, we tripped on a bug in Apple's 64-bit Cocoa on 10.5.x. This problem does not occur on 10.6. It does not occur on Machines with "Core 1" processors. It also depends on the recurring events you have in iCal. WORKAROUND: In order to work around this problem, please quit MenuCalendarClock from the "gears" popup menu. Then find the MenuCalendarClock application in the Finder (usually in the Applications folder), hit Cmd-I (or "Get Info"). Find and check the "Open in 32-bit mode" checkbox. Run MenuCalendarClock. This will not harm MCC's operation or performance. We will issue an update ASAP to work around this bug automatically. Dirk Theisen for Objectpark Software (Version 4.1)

MTCOBRA Just installed 4.1 (after quitting then renaming my previous version just in case) and am glad to report no hang-up. So far working flawlessly on iMac 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X 10.6.1 Snow Leopard. JCHERIAN I am running Mac 10.5.8 on MacBookPro2,2 and MenuCalendarClock iCal 4.1 and I found that the program would consume all free memory. I logged into an admin account (that I rarely use) and found that there are no hangups or huge memory usage there. So I think there is an issue with how the program is reading the iCal file in my profile. Deleting my profile's preferences file net.objectpark.MenuCalendarClock.plist did not help. Reverting back to 4.0.0 did. I will submit this as an email to the developer though the web site http://www.objectpark.net/mcc.html indicates that they provide email support for registered users and I am only registered to 3.x and still undecided about upgrading to 4.x. RIDOGI The pop down calendar on the clock should have been built into the OS. This is great for quickly viewing iCal and getting a glance of your day. The customization options are great (which calendars to include, how many days, etc). Tool tip hover overs mean I can see what is happening on any day. I only go to iCal to edit my calendar now. The new entries are wrapped in "key" and "string" elements, respectively. To clarify, *these* two lines should be added before both the closing and closing tags: <string>http://www.objectpark.net/appcasts/MCC3.xml</string> For example, the last six lines of my Info.plist file look like this (in case wrapping screws this up, each line begins with a tag): <string>http://www.objectpark.net/appcasts/MCC3.xml</string>

Navigate to Contents > Info.plist 3. Open Info.plist in a text editor. Warning: do not open it in Microsoft Word or any other document writing program. It will corrupt the file. 4. RIQAY I agree with what others have said about the latest updates to this application. I used to love MCC because it was unobtrusive and offered a quick look at what was going on with my calendar. However, i don't need the to-do list management features in this utility and I can't stand the fact that the developer's new direction adds a dock icon to what used to be a nice, streamlined menubar interface. And, as others have mentioned, emails to the developer go unanswered. I've recently switched to the menubar calendar included with iStat menus, and I use the Dashboard widget iCal Events for quickly seeing what's on my schedule. Both of these alternatives are excellent and free. (Version 3.1)

Moreover, developper do not reply to emails !! This is not fair, particularily when one just had to pay again a new license for upgrading to 3.0 that was supposed to bring Leopard compatibility but also brought some major issues... Giving the choice to easily deactivate dock 'intrusion' without digging into 'plist' is a must showing respect for installed base... (Version 3.1)

FLEC65 I have to agree with others regarding version 3.1. I'm not sure I like the new direction the developper takes with MCC. The beauty of previous versions of was that it's (almost) invisible and unobstrusive. MCC running like an app (with Dock icon and menu) is just too much for me, even with the new possibilities it may bring. If possible, the developper should give us the option to run MCC as menu item only like before. I will stick to version 3.0.6 for now, hoping and waiting for the best. (Version 3.1)

PETERT As with many others I think the decision made by the developer/s to change the way the app works by adding a full Menu Bar and Dock Icon is not optimal. Without at least the option to easily override BOTH of these via prefs means that I will not now or ever go past Vers 3.06. [I had Vers 3.1 installed for all of 10 secs before deciding it was time to advance backwards.] If in future that means an OS update breaks MCC then I will, regrettably, have to purchase one of the less endowed competition which is sad as I believe MCC has the best interface of all similar utilities. F451 MCC's strength is its ability to reside discreetly in the menu bar until summoned. STEVE HODGSON You don't need a third party app to fix this. Move the application to the desktop and open the package contents. Open info.plist in a good text editor and add the following new key. Move the application back and relaunch. It will now have no application menu or Dock icon. 1. You need to move the application to force the OS to recognise the change. 2. The new key is surrounded by HTML-like tags i.e. key and /key within characters. The '1' is surrounded by string and /string enclosed within similar brackets. Experience has taught me that these might be stripped off this post! (Version 3.1)

D9 I can understand some of the anger over the new paid upgrade for this program, but as someone who ponied up the dough, I can state that it's worth it. The main reason is the To Do features (Leopard version). Thanks to Leopard's iCal updates, MenuCalendarClock now allows you to create, edit and change status on your To Do items...all without having iCal open. Not sure why you can't also add events, but nonetheless, this feature alone is worth at least the upgrade price ($12.95). Besides that, the existing features of MCC make this an overall winner for what it does. Customization is a big plus and the mere convenience of having an adept clock & calendar solution in the menu bar is worthy of purchasing. FYI...I'm currently using 3.0.1, not 3.0.2 like this says. It seems 3.0.2 has problems and has been pulled by the developer (11/13/07). Currently using the version before >> (Version 3.0.2)

THIRSTYROBOT I can no longer recommend this application until the developer updates his prices. Here is a cc on the email I sent: I considered buying a licence for your application, MenuCalendarClock, but I was really surprised to find that your price when quoted in Canadian dollars is *higher* than the US dollar price. This is seriously out of date as the Canadian dollar is now close to 10% above parity with the US buck. According to today's rates, the Canadian price ought to be $18.47CDN, not $22.20CDN as quoted on your site. I'll reconsider that licence once your prices reflect fair market value. SJK From the developer's site (via the More Info link here): "Version 3 is for Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) only." In general, for anyone not running 10.5 I'd recommend checking developer sites of software that's been updated since 10.5's official release to make sure it's still compatible with pre-10.5 OS X since the info on MacUpdate might not be accurate. (Version 3.0.1)

CYBERATOMIC Please beware of this version - apparently this is NOT a free upgrade for existing users - and not only does this new version cost more money, but apparently there is no upgrade path either. Lastly, this and previous versions run okay in Leopard - but NOTE: the latest version 2.7.5 DOES NOT RUN IN LEOPARD!!! This means that if you blindly upgrade your 2.0+ version, it will not work in Leopard until you pay for a version 3 license at the full $20 rate. Also, there is apparently no way to get a version previous to 2.7.5 so that you can continue to run it in Leopard... so if you have a copy previous to 2.7.5, you better hold on to it. I'd love to be corrected here, so please ObPark, please update your site, and fix this problem...

ANDREW E I have used this for a while and I like it very much. It works as intended. Keeps all of the go to info I need to tap regularly in an easy to access location. Even better, I can access this info without pulling up iCal. The one improvement I thought of already is a drop down wihch shows the upcomming month too or at least 45 days at all times. I find $18 a bit steep compared to what others' charge for this type of app but it seems to be well done, sell engineered and professional and this is how I like my work to be too and I charge properly for mine. JAZZADDICT I tried contacting Objectpark Software 3 times in the past 2 weeks for support. Twice to the support address for MCC, and once to their main email address. No response. I'm having a couple issues. One is that despite the fact the I have selected it to not check for updates, it still phones home upon launch (I'm a Little Snitch user). I am not subscribed to any calendars, so I am sure it is making the network connection for reasons unrelated to ical. Second is that when I have 'copy birthdays to this calendar' selected, every-time I add a birthday to Address Book, ical crashed. It also crashes when doing the initial copy, but that's no big deal. I could go back to having ical create the birthday calendar, but that isn't as nice because I'm forced to have it create its own calendar instead of copying it into an existing calendar. Anyway, the most troublesome of all this is that they won't respond to my support requests. 2 weeks should be plenty. Especially when I'm shelling out $20 for this app. If anybody could confirm my issues, and let me know if they've ever gotten through to support, I'd appreciate it. :-) (Version 2.6.1)

SIMICHAVEL If you like organizing your desktop so that everything is neatly within reach, but not always front and center, this little app is fantastic. It is as simple as can be to use, unobtrusive, stable as a rock, and pleasing and customizable visually. If you don't work that way, the app may be redundant. The $19 tag is measureable only against comparable apps. As far as I know, there is nothing like it out there. For the same money you may be able to get some other piece of more complex software, but it won't make your iCal data instantly available to you at all times without cluttering your desktop. A development I would like to see is to make the program not just an accessibility app, but an interactive one. For instance, I'd like to be able to input information right into its windows. "Check-Off" is a good example. It resides in the menubar, and opens up as a menubar dropdown interactive to do list. (Version 2.6.1)

KAUFI I agree with user "Sidetracked" that this piece of software is not exactly a bargain - but highly useful: It works steadily, requires few system resources, is very handy and even looks good. I haven't paid to get the nag-free version yet, because the nag window is fortunately inobtrusive. So for many of you out there it should ok to use it like freeware. I guess I will buy a licence soon, not only for a good app, but also to add the hotkey activation feature. (Version 2.5.1)

SIDETRACKED I just bit the bullet and paid for this. I agree that the price is too high, but I use it every day and it works very well, keeps my desktop neat and provides instant access to my schedule. I've tried to find other, cheaper options, but so far nothing out there comes close. (Of course, since I wrote that, a new free app will appear tomorrow...) Better $19 for something I use 10x a day than $8 for something I quickly forget I ever bought. (Version 2.5.1)

JUSTINNORMAN $19 sounds very expensive for the simple convenience of having your iCal notes and alerts in your menu bar, but the free features on this program are pretty useful. It's come in handy several times when I wanted to look up a date or weekday but not launch an extra program. If all you want is a simple menu calendar, you can just click on a button to disable the features that require payment. After that, there are no annoying pop-ups or requests for registration. You can just enjoy the free features, which are quite nice. (Version 2.5.1)

SHIMIN Object Park has the cheek to charge an obscene fee for registration for a common concept software. It claimed on its website that anyone can use MCC basic features for free - in bold. Yet after using MCC for a while with the intention of keeping it permanently as a 'freeware' to be upgraded later when I really need it, it stunningly prompt me at random to register the product, even when I chose to 'register later' once and chose to 'turn off registration prompt' twice. The prompt just keep popping up! For MCC developers, I'd say if you're looking to make money out of this, DON'T! eventually someone (open source etc) is going to come up with something better for FREE! For users, skip this software, there are far better freewares and value-for-money sharewares around. (Version 2.2.1)

SIMICHAVEL In an amazing world of endless freeware utilities, $19 for any utility seems steep. Not much more can get you a full shareware application. That being said, if you are obssessive as I am about using your menubar (or keystroke combinations) for easy access to various data and actions, you will simply love this little utility. It not only gives you menubar access to all your iCal calendars, it also provides a really nice degree of customization regarding which information to show or hide. And hidden info is always only a keystroke away. The utility is self-explanatory, no manual necessary, and two months of use have turned up no stability issues or conflicts. Regarding features, well, the price tag suggests that you should be able to manipulate data from within the program and not have to open iCal. I give half a star penalty for that. (Version 2.1.1)

SCOTT GARDNER This is a pretty neat little app. But there is one item in the list of registered version features on the developer's site that is misleading IMO. They state "Sync Birthdays from AddressBook into iCal." This is the one feature that I wanted, enough to pay what I think is a hefty price tag for this app. What I understood it to mean, which also coincided with the app's pref pane, is that I could view my Birthdays iCal calendar (which is already auto-sync'd w/ Address Book in Tiger). That is not the case here. I wrote support, and they responded a few days later to say that I need to disable the Birthdays iCal and then instruct their app to copy Birthdays into a new calendar created by their app. Not interested to do this, and thus not feeling the registration fee is justified, I wrote back and requested a refund. No response yet. (Version 2.0.9)

THULDAI I do not like MenuCalendarClock for iCal really. What I am looking for is a menu bar clock replacement to have the date in my menubar. Any additional functionality is welcome. So I tried MCC without registering as all the functionality I wanted seemed to be contain in 'simple-mode'. MCC messes with my computer though: - It introduces a "HotKey" that can only be changed if you pay. If you do not pay it still is active and overrules the shortcut I had assigned to Cmd-Ctrl-Alt-C before. No way of turning it off (except if you pay). Very annoying and intrusive I find. - It changes the colors of my iCal calendar colors, even though I never use MCC to access iCal. Leave my iCal alone! That is why I will stop using it and probably use wClock or TimeStat instead. (Version 2.0.5)

DAGAZ An excellent menu item - exactly what I was looking for and more. You can place the mouse over the icon in the menu bar and it instantly tells you what you have scheduled for this day (or week) and what todo items you have in iCal. To JimW's long-winded comment, using the clock from this program is an option, you don't have to use it. I am still using Apple's built-in clock but have this icon sitting beside it to instantly tell me what I have going on. I can see myself paying for the full version in the very near future. JIMW Choosing an paying a shareware fee for a clock replacement for Apple's date & time preference is in my opinion getting similar to accepting an invitation to dance in a mine field. Most are overpriced for what they do and many are unstable or lack the one feature you most desire when they meet the other criteria you want. Soon after you pay the shareware fee many seem to disappear after an update or two or be sold off to someone else who then wants to stick you for another fee. Freeware versions seem to transform into expensive shareware versions after they promise not to. Finally when you finally find a usable basic simple product that does what you want it to do and pay your fee, the developer almost always feels that they have to come out with an "enhanced" version that complicates what was a nice simple and useful product with extra "features" that only a small minority might want or use. The bottom line: if you don't care for the current selection of available clock replacements, be patient and wait a month instead of spending your money. For in a month you may very well be present with a number of new options and the one sort of would accepted may have disappeared along with some of the ones that you did not like at all. So do your research, keep informed, try to stay with the freeware products if they can fulfill your needs to avoid the disappointment of spending money for something that you may not be pleased with later on, and enjoy you dance in the mine field of clock replacements. Note that this product does have a freeware mode of operation, which is why I am currently using the Entourage version of it. (Version 1.6.5)

MAC2ALL Thanks to Mike for raising issuses about the shareware pricing versus features, and their developing companies. I read with pleasure your philosophical views at he MenuaCalendarClock -> http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/14351 It is important to share the good behind the scenes info. And thanks for the alternatives presented, which is a good bonus at these user reviews. Some times i do not find that the reviews are just, or fair, in rating the shareware functions, usually lack of. If i had always listened to these negative reviews, i would have missed out on some real good sharewares, that turned out to work quite good on my systems, despite bad reviews. But although i some times dont understand the poor ratings, it might be because of these users system setups. Me for one cant use the APE (application enhancer), and miss out on "Default Folder" and the full integration of the excellent "URL Manager Pro", because they are APE based. So i may inform of the issues that APE have on some users like me. But i also truly express my envy for those who have systems that can use these shareware gems to the full. I dont use QuicKeys or MenuaCalendarClock so i wont rate them, although i have looked at them. (Version 1.5.1)

Finally figured out it was MCC (it was taking up 70% of my processor activity!) that was trashing my system. Disabled MCC and my powerbook runs like new again. I'll be sticking with the freeware (not bloat+nagware) version for now. (Version 1.5)

DIRK THEISEN The behaiour you are describing had to do with the update info server having problems (temporarily), not with version 1.5.0 per se. However, in version 1.5.1 we made sure this cannot happen again. If you still experience big cpu usage, please email menucalendarclock@objectpark.net and we will work with you to resolve the issue. MIKE HARRIS I have a strong philosophical objection to this product. They took two excellent freeware products, MenuCalendar and CalendarClock, neither of which they produced themselves, and combined them into a single exorbitantly priced product. To me, this is the opposite of contributing to the Macintosh community; this is theft and greed personified. (Version 1.5)

AXEL (OBJECTPARK SOFTWARE) Hi Mike, I'm sorry to say that you are 'strongly' misinformed. (Version 1.5)
| Dec 8 2004 |
DIRK THEISEN Sorry, but this is not true. Objectpark Software was approached by original author Guido Neitzer of Menu Calendar to maintain the product. All former Menu Calendar features (plus a lot more!) are still free to use without paying a penny (plus it runs on systems >10.2). MenuCalendar incorporated similar product on the way and now delivers best of both worlds. My company employs a very liberal shareware scheme - you can test as long as you want (no 30 day trial period or similar) just a reminder AND you can always switch to freeware mode at any time - no more reminders (but less features). Objectpark is putting a lot of development resources into MenuCalendarClock and are improving it regularly according to user feedback (sent to menucalendarclock@objectpark.net). 14.95 EUR ist not a steep price. You can pay this for clock utilities alone. It's just that the USD is really weak these days. All-in-all I think we are doing what we can do. But we are professionals not college students and we also have to pay our rents. Dirk Theisen, Objectpark Software (Version 1.5)

ANONYMOUS "My company employs a very liberal shareware scheme - you can test as long as you want (no 30 day trial period or similar) just a reminder AND you can always switch to freeware mode at any time - no more reminders (but less features)." --That's crap. I find that I have to 'switch to freeware mode' at least once a week! In other words, that switch doesnt work!!!! You shouldnt go promoting a feature that doesnt work! This is the reason I switched back to CalanderClock. It may not have as many features but I get no annoying popup reminding me to register! (Version 1.5)

MIKE HARRIS In reply to the replies by the developer to my comment: Axel: "I'm sorry to say that you are 'strongly' misinformed." Ha ha ha! Oh gosh that's funny! That's really funny! Do you write your own material? Do you? Because that is so fresh. You've taken "strong" and used it out of context to insult me in this everyday situation. God what a clever, smart guy you must be, to come up with a joke like that all by yourself. That's so fresh too. Any, any Titanic jokes you want to throw at me too as long as we're at it? God you're so funny! Dirk: Yes, and you "maintained" the product by deciding to charge for it. Nothing what you said above changes the factual truth of the criticism that what your company did was take two excellent freeware products and turn them into an overpriced Shareware product with very little work on your own part. And, I'm sorry, 14.95 euros IS overpriced, whether the dollar is doing well or not. BTW, I loved your reaction to the anonymous commenter who pointed out the flaw with your "freeware mode." (Version 1.5)
| Dec 9 2004 |
MIKE HARRIS I should point out that the reply to Axel's comment was a homage to "Family Guy": (Reads a bit funnier if you know the source.) (Version 1.5)
| Dec 14 2004 |
PETER MAURER Let's just try to calm down a bit, shall we? Everybody's entitled to their own opinion, and if someone finds EUR14,95 too expensive, then that's that. Use the freeware mode, which I'm sure Dirk will be happy to fix, or use another calendar. (There might also be a problem with your setup, which causes your preferences to get corrupted. When approached politely, most developers will be more than willing to assist you with solving such a problem.) The word "theft" is somewhat misplaced, however. Objectpark Software did not steal Menu Calendar, and they certainly didn't steal Calendarclock. Lastly, I want to say that --in my humble opinion-- Axel's comment was indeed inappropriate. Try to think of it as an immediate, slightly allergic reaction. I'm sure Axel would delete that comment if he could. (Version 1.5)

RICHARD TAYTOR I use this program to display the time and a pop-up calendar. I don't use iCal and I am only interested in the "free" features. I am writing here because I believe the developer is being deceptive about the "free" features. The program frequently asks whether I want to continue using the shareware features even after I clicked the "Disable Features" button, and further, it attempts to make an unauthorised internet connection and turns on automatic update check even after I have turned it off. Otherwise, I have no complaints with MenuClandarClock. (Version 1.1.2)

D9 Hey, here's an idea... let's talk about how the program works! Try maintaining the major purpose of this section. (Take your beef to the developers and/or don't buy the product.) This feels more like Calendarclock than MenuCalendar. The "aqua" look is gone; the simple lines of Calendarclock prevail (thank God). Unfortunately at this stage (or at least w/ the unregistered version), you cannot customize the window color/transparency. White's fine but I liked being able to modify it to match my desktop color palette. Also missing is the much appreciated Calendarclock preference allowing you to assign a particular font for the menu bar display. It seems very responsive overall with no stability issues. The feature I most wanted from MenuCalendar, tool tips, is present. A single mouseover brings up today's events. Mouseover on calendar dates shows that date's events. Very nice! The iCal color indentification for the To-Do list is great in helping to distinguishing different calendar tasks. Folks can complain about the pricing (and I think $14 is a bit much too... the $7-$10 range would seem appropriate) but the program itself appears at this stage to hold much promise after it's marriage of the two former products. For the Calendarclock purists, I'm sure it will always be available somewhere on binary newsgroups or .Mac sites. (Version 1.0.0b1)

ERESOTROCABRON CalendarClock still IS an alternative, it is available for free (still), and the developer has stated that the current version will not stop working unless Apple 'breaks' it with a future OS X upgrade. People, get a clue already. (Version 1.0.0b1)

ANONYMOUS Yeah, and the developer has also stated that it will no longer be available for download after today. And, of course, it will no longer be developed. Someone bought it, and I hope the developer got paid very well for his efforts, and turned it into overpriced bloatware. I think that's a crying shame. I mean, $14? Ha! (Version 1.0.0b1)

THEODORE LEE What the hell? Objectpark buys up the rights to Calendarclock, the free competition, and then kills the free product? What a shame. If Eletrcophysio whatever their name is had just made Calendarclock available for half the price of Menu Calendar, I would have anted up for it. This has left a very bad taste in my mouth with regard to these two developers. It goes against the very nature of "shareware". (Version 1.0.0b1)

TUERESCABRON chill out, ace. CalendarClock is still available, the current version is FREE and the developer (Peter Maurer) has stated that the only way it will stop working is if Apple 'breaks' it with some future OS X upgrade. My, how some people spout such nonsense without ever attempting to find out the whole story. (Version 1.0.0b1)

LEO OF BORG Four weeks ago I did this 'pocket Calendar watusi'.. I evaluated MenuCalendar, and promptly trashed it due to price and garish UI. Clutter clutter everywhere. I also settled on Calendarclock for its lean interface and simplicity, and since there's a 1.0 version I haven't changed my mind. I probably won't go to the next 'assimilated version' if this beta is any indication. In a nutshell: clean up the UI, drop the price (c'mon, OS wide Haxies are $10 and worth it, this is a -menuitem- that is a one trick pony), and have an evaluation period to snag the guilty. And you'll have a winner. Right now? Sorry, not compelling. (Version 2.5b2)

DANNY A nice application. However, Calendarclock has caught my attention and I am now trashed Menu Calendar due to its ridiculous price. If you have $15 to waste, use Menu Calendar. If you want a free, useful and reasonable calendar, use Calendarclock. Sorry Menu Calendar, you guys got a little too greedy. (Version 2.5b2)

ANONYMOUS A very nice program, but not $15 nice. I had used the freeware version of Menu Calendar, but now I'm smitten by Calendarclock. (Version 2.5b1)

PAUL LIEBER I agree with other reviewers' sentiments: Menu Calendar was a terrific application until it became both bloated and costly. Version 1.8 was the last user-friendly version of MC I touched. Sorry folks; CalendarClock b2 is where it's at. And it's free. (Version 2.5b1)

JöRG To me the most important improvement of the new beta is the new UI design. It's simpler and more aesthetic without losing any functionality. A great little app I won't miss!
