HALEAKALARI wow. i've never seen so many negative reviews for a solid program, just because the people writing them can't figure out how to configure their own damn computers. you're all a bunch of retards. you need to open the correct ports in os x's firewall and if using a wireless connection, in your router as well, for any torrent client to work. end of story. the problems you all have with tomato obviously arise from not understanding the basics. and to the person who called this application "junk", eat a fat one. this was one of the first alternative torrent clients for os x and it is actually fairly configurable (see "advanced settings" when you start up a torrent). cripes people, get yourselves together. ANONYMOUS 1.5.1 worked from the very beginning, unlike Transmission previously installed. Tomato's basic use is straightforward. The additional features are not commented for non expert users to even understand them. There is a menu supposed to regulate the ratio of download/upload volume but it does not work. Stopping and restarting is very simple and efficient. Compared to rapidshare downloads, I find torrent horribly SLOW (typically 3k/s downloads with 2 peers and 3 seeds) and I almost systematically upload more than I download. It is getting even worse as the size of the downloaded file increases. Am I missing a better tuning of the parameters? (Version 1.5.1)

MIKE ABDULLAH So far for me, this is a really nice little app. Dead simple to user, just tell it the torrent and away it goes. One request to the developer though, (I can't find his email address!). When I first tried a torrent with this app, it wouldn't work. It just sat there trying to connect to the torrent. I realised that I had my firewall on and that was what was causing the problem. So I turned it off. However, Tomato Torrent still didn't work. I had to close and then re-start the feed. So, would it be possible for a future version of the app to check if the computer's firewall is blocking a particular port when trying a torrent? iTunes does so. (Version 1.1.2)

JUICEBOX To get the torrents working you have to edit your firewalls which actually lets the files be transferred. You should visit the bittorrent website, they should have help about configuring your firewalls otherwise just type " bittorrent firewall" into google and see what comes up (Version 1.1.2)

But... maybe it's just my newbieness and the fact that i only do torrents occasionally... but is there a way to change port settings? Could not find this in the FAQs. Many trackers reject the default bittorrent ports (6881-6889) or any other common p2p port for incoming connections. So I consider the ability to change port settings a necessity for any bittorrent client I use. So... does Tomato Torrent let you do that? Or does it not? (Version 1.1.2)

BROCK GUNTER-SMITH On my DP 2GHz G5, if I run with only 1GB of RAM (under either 10.3.9 or 10.4) Tomato runs awesome and with no problems. As soon as I added an additional 1GB then another to a total of 3GB, Tomato creates a kernel panic within about 15 to 30 seconds of launching and downloading torrents. This is on clean installs, and after swapping out 3 different pairs of memory (from cheap to expensive that all pass the Apple Hardware Test and also pass memtest) to ensure that it's not faulty RAM. I can max out my system using tonnes of other apps with no kernel panic, but launching Tomato, as soon as system RAM usage goes above 1GB and it's running, kernel panic EVERY time. I LOVE TOMATO!!!...just not this bug which has forced me to now use Azeurus which has fixed this bug in their code. ALICORN I love this client. It is very simple to use, it's unobtrusive, and it works reliably. One feature it really needs is the ability to limit *download* speed. Normally this isn't something one should be interested in doing, but in an environment like a college campus where you're sharing bandwidth it can cause problems if a download goes too fast. I don't get it either - thought this would be in the update. Oh well. I'm not sure I understand why anyone would design a bt client and not include that most basic functionality. Not to mention that no matter what ports I forward or how I set up its incredibly arcane interface, I can never get a decent d/l rate. And, yes the file I'm testing now has 27 seeders 14 leechers and I'm getting about 5 kbps. Heck, Xfactor is faster than this. Although Azureus is a processor hog, at least it works properly. ANONYMOUS Does this support a way to globally or per-torrent control an upload (seeding) bandwidth cap? I don't want to cause performance problems for those on my LAN. Sometimes I need upload bandwidth caps to make it acceptable to use torrents at all. Other times I could seed for much longer periods if I had an adjustable cap. It might be helpful to have a timer to allow changing the cap a set number of hours or days after a file is complete. If there were several torrents going it would also be helpful to prioritize upload bandwidth based on which files have the greatest need for seeders. In short I'm looking for ways to contribute in the most useful way while minimizing local impact. (Version 1.0.3)

PAUL I like this software. Though I'm not someone who uses BitTorrent with great frequency, whenever I get a few files going, it would be nice to have all downloads bunched into one window, instead of one window per download, as with this program. Now, Azureus does this, but unlike that program, Tomato Torrent doesn't hog a quarter to a third of my CPU time--this program is so light on the resources that it amazes me. So, though it lacks some advanced/power features, it makes up for it in great performance. Try it out. (Version 1.0.3)

MAYHEM I fully agree a single-window interface would be optimal. RAILHEADDESIGN.COM Works great -- I like it a LOT better than all the other clients available. However, I *do* wish he'd make it so that all the current downloads are listed in one window -- if you're doing several downloads at once, it can be a real pain to keep track of them. Also, it would be great to have a warning dialog pop up when you close a download window. I've done this by accident, losing my connection, so a confirmation dialog would be nice. Lastly, does anyone know how the world to get a hold of the developer? His website doesn't list his email address and I'd like to send him my requests. (Version 1.0.3)

BOB Tomato Torrent may lack a few features, but on the whole it is superior to the original BT. (Sorry Bram!) On first try, TT was a bit off-putting, but I quickly got over the difference in interface. The next thing I noticed was that it was not hogging the CPU like I was used to with the original BT. Content checking was quicker and a LOT less CPU-intensive as well -- it didn't slow the Dock down, choke the HD or cause the spinning beach ball. I ran Activity Viewer to check on CPU usage, and with 3 torrents running both u/l and d/l it used only 1.5% of the CPU!! Impressive!! I believe I will switch to Tomato Torrent. Sarwat Khan, keep up the good work! Others could learn a lesson from you on how to make a lean 'n' mean app. (Version 1.0.2)

ANONYMOUS This is a pretty good client, but overall I don't think it offers much over the standard BT client. Of course, there are many good points: Fast, doesn't eat up my CPU even at high speeds, which is a huge plus. Pretty easy to use, it can make your computer act as a tracker, which is a really nice feature even though I rarely use it. It also makes torrent files in a easy to use way. Every torrent is it's own window (like the original BT client), which gets clumsy. There aren't advanced options like "superseed", and the interface for editing the options provided is not intuitive. I think this client should take some notes from BitTornado (windows), while I don't use Windows anymore, BitTornado had some nice features and a good interface. Overall, at this time, I still think this is the best BT client for Mac. Azureus has more features, but it eats up all my CPU and crashes often. (Version 1.0.1)

ANONYMOUS Review: Tasty Tomato! I run Tomato Torrent on the 550 Powerbook G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) over wireless on a pretty clean installation of 10.3. My provider is Comcast. My down and up in Tomato are both about 25 K/s which on this platform is the best I've gotten since Napster. (On Napster for the Mac I would routinely get 100+ K/s.) My experience with Tomato Torrent so far has been great. BitTorrent has never worked out for me (on the Mac) and neither has LimeWire. A BitTorrent client I ran at my university on a Windows computer got me in a little hot water (apparently it served out terabytes of data over a weekend) but anyway it worked really well. Other reviews have made me apprehensive about restarting downloads. I have never expected much from this feature in a program because it has never seemed to work anyway! Anyway, if I wasn't clear, this is a VERY POSITIVE REVIEW of Tomato Torrent for this download-starved Mac-using jamband lover with high expectations of his music sharing software. It does have a tasty intuitive interface and is giving me my best throughput I've gotten from any Mac OS X client ever. (Version 1.0.1)

TAMASHII I have the same exact problem (and error line) that you have. I am running 10.2.8 on a G4 iMac. Once I hit that error (generally within a minute of opening the torrent) I just get a stream of them and it will not relaunch the DL. Just keeps giving me errors. On my 10.3 G5 at work - works brilliantly. At home? Nada.

WEED This is a great app, really fast. I only have dial-up internet and at some points the program sucks out all the speed, unabling me to surf websites or check my mail. It would be nice if it could have a pause button, instead of me having to close it everytime. Because it also loses some of what i've already downloaded on restart. (Version 1.0.1)

BUD Tomato Torrent is currently the best BitTorrent client for the Mac, although unfortunately it too, is far from perfect: - You must start up all transfers manually when you restart the program - There is a seperate window for every download (not too bothersome, unless you have a lot of downloads) BUT...it is still more powerful than the official client (although the soon-to-be-released 2.0 might win out) and it is better than the slow-and-huge Azureus... With the few aforementioned additions, this would be a perfect little app. Not bloated, simple, small, and just simply nice to use... (Version 1.0.1)

BRILDENLANCH I love this client except for one thing. For the life of me I can't figure out how to restart a torrent after I quit the app. Like say I opened up Crap.torrent and it started dling. Then I stopped it, cleared it off the app, then wanted to open it again. In the Official BT Client, you can just choose the same file, and it will automatically check the file and resume the dl, in TT, it just tells me it will replace the file if I try to save over the same one. Is there a way to do this correctly? (Version 1.0.1)

ANONYMOUS in reply to your "what do these numbers mean" question, the ones in the detailed view under the configuration tab are in bytes, meaning 5000=5k/sec, generally, you will get better speeds if you put this value between 10000 and 20000, as long as your bandwith can handle it. the 'up' number next to your 'dl' number is your actual up speed, determined by what you set in the configuration. (btw, 0 is infinite meaning you'll use most your bandwith for uploading). hope this helps. (Version 1.0)

NATHAN Nice app, better than the official one that's for sure. Tomato is a nice name too. Reminds me of Tomato Bank (a bank in Japan - interesting identity that one!) Would like a single window interface though for multiple downloads - something along the lines of Speed Downloads interface (although it doesn't need to be anywhere near as complicated as that). And I'm not a big fan of the initial window either (where you pick what you want to do). ANONYMOUS Tomato Torrent 1.0b8 is based on BitTorrent 3.4.1a not on BitTorrent 3.4 This was shown in Help->Release notes option. Copied from release notes: _ Tomato Torrent is the new name of BitTorrent Macintosh. It's named so in honour of the Tomato Convenience Store from the Dreamcast game Shenmue 2 (and the whole duck-racing thing). I wanted to do something better to brand this thing, but I got sick of doing yet another release without giving it a proper name, so Tomato it is. _ BitTorrent 3.4.1a. (Version 1.0b8)

ANONYMOUS FYi, 3.4 was considered extremely unstable and should not be used; it had numerous problems with both client and tracker functionality. It was pulled within 24 hours of being posted. The client should be based off the latest source, 3.4.1, not 3.4. While this has a lot of nice features the official client lacks, it would also be nice to see the author contribute to the official client instead of starting an entirely new client. Once this is based off 3.4.1(shouldn't be more than a quick change) I will certainly give it a try! 3.4.1 has many improvements on its own over 3.3... (Version 1.0b8)

JAKE Smaller windows are good, but this app is really worth it for the reduced CPU usage. The standard client can easily use 50%+ on a G4 733Mhz. I've got 3 torrents going at once wright now and its using roughly 4% which is way more reasonable. An order of magnitude better than the standard client. So far the best BT client on OS X.
